Update: A statement released by Official Nintendo Magazine reads:
The details printed in Official Nintendo Magazine 21 regarding Mario Kart Wii were healthy speculation on our part and are in no way an official announcement from Nintendo.
"We are sorry if we have mislead anyone. We do not set out to mislead our readers. ONM apologises profusely for any misunderstandings that this has caused.Update ends
Original story: As Reggie told a crowd of journalists at E3 earlier this year to "wait and see" how many players would be on the course at once in the new game, a trailer behind him clearly showed 12 karts lined up on the starting grid, as NGamer rightly pointed out in this huge preview.
Despite no further announcements having come from Nintendo, UK Official Nintendo Magazine says the online battle mode will allow for 16 players.
We're chasing Nintendo as we type for confirmation, but for now you can read about everything known about the game in this massively in-depth preview.
16 players is going to be absolute chaos! Just the way we like it in Mario Kart. It'd also be good if it had online multiplayer for the career Cups too, but that might be too much to ask for.
This is one of the few Wii games I'm actually excited about, let's hope it lives up to the hype.
I think 8 or 10 should be the limit for racing as it's just too many for a Mario Kart game otherwise, and may make it more difficult to win a race if you're languishing behind and suddenly get near the front as you can do in the series.
I think the reason Super Mario kart is still regarded as the best in the series, is because it was only two player, it all went down hill after that.
So you haven't played the ds one yet? Because if you had, you would know that it is an excellent multi player game online with 4 players or off line with 8! A seamless online experience and a game full of variety and a wonderful achievement on a hand held!
If the Wii version is as good as Mario Kart DS, then it will be a must buy (of which the horizon holds many on the Nintendo consoles)

I have to say im finally seeing some games that actually seriously tempts me to buy a Wii in the form of; Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxies, Super Smash Bros Brawl Mario Kart Wii.
its good, but tell you the truth my Wi-fi connection isnt that great.....i wont believe that i will be able to play online with it,maybe access the store etc...but not play games
why they didnt include ethernet connection is beyond me,not everyone keeps their PC right near the Wii,and because my PC is downstairs and my Wii upstairs,i get a weak signal(say 55-65%)
i am sorry but i want to play this game online, but dont think i will even bother, too much messing about

my PC thats directly hooked up to the net is downstairs, so is my wireless router (made by lynksys i believe) while my wii and (much) higher spec pc are both upstairs, i still get a 90-100% signal from the downstair router. i suggest you invest in a better router tbh
