Nintendo and Retro Studio are messing with your minds, as Nintendo tells CVG it's not developing a 2D Metroid game, despite hints in the latest Wii game, Metroid Prime 3.
Rumours of a 2D Metroid for DS, entitled Metroid Dread, ran rife at E3 2005 with the game supposedly turning up on a leaked release list, and later turning up on 'insider' blogs.
All talk of the game ceased until recently when, hidden deep within the Space Pirate-infested depths of MP3, a secret message that can be found using Samus' scan visor hinted: "Experiment status report update: Metroid project 'Dread' is nearing the final stages of completion."
But it's all just a joke it seems. "Nintendo is not making the 2D Metroid at this point in time," Nintendo told CVG.
Bummer. A proper Dual Screen sequel to the legendary Super Metroid would be incredible.
That sucks, as awesome as the new games are they aren't a patch on the 2D efforts in my opinion. I've recently started Zero Mission again on my DS, and its truly awesome.
Since when does Nintendo denying something mean it's not happening? They always pull stuff like this! Anway, wasn't Metroid Dread going to be 2.5d? Nintendo are pretty pedantic like that.
i thinbk it might be a cover up, this is because i was playing through metriod prime again and when i scanned a computer in the space pirate base it said "Hunter Metriod DS is showing problems" this was is a game release two years befor the DS was even announced, i think theres still hope
Metroid Prime is a great game for easter eggs. I don't know if anybody noticed, but one of the rooms in the Space Pirate base in Phendrana Drifts was called "Reaserch Lab Aether". Two years later, Echoes launched, and was set on a planet called "Aether". Are we destined to see Dread in two years?
It's amusing how everyone interprets the Metroid Dread scan data as it is some kind of real-world indication that Metroid Dread is a game in production. This is a result of rabid fanbase error and not "Retro Studios/Nintendo" pulling ours legs, as I've seen mentally impaired people dub it.
It is not unheard of at all for Space Pirates to heedlessly experiment with Metroids to try to create some god-killing Metroid bioweapon. The reference to a "Metroid Experiment codenamed 'Dread' nearing completion" could easily (and far more logically!) indicate that it is to be used subjectively in the plot for future games. Lots of people seem to think that Nintendo/Retro Studios would readily implement non-canon information into Metroid Prime 3, which I would personally find to be highly unprofessional. If it was a subtle hint that you had to go through extra effort to find and the objective is for it obviously to be bonus material, then sure, but it's simply just another piece of scan data that anyone who uses the scan visor can collect. All of that on top of the fact that it is "coincidentally" sandwiched in the middle of the Pirate Homeworld, where finding Space Pirate research data is a far cry from unlikely.
On top of that, the quote discloses that Nintendo is not working on a Metroid Dread title for the DS. Does that mean there is no such thing as Metroid Dread and it's a reference to a silly rumor that Retro Studios implemented just to provoke the fanbase? No. Does it mean that they will NEVER work on a Metroid Dread title for the DS? Nope!
