Government backs BBFC on Manhunt ban

Ratings body backed despite petition against the ban
The petition urged the government to restrict the powers of the BBFC following its failure to grant Manhunt 2 a rating, suggesting that the ratings body was denying consumers freedom of choice.

"Adults should be allowed to make their own decisions with regard to what videogames they want to play. We all understand that this game is extremely violent and unsuitable for children. As such an 18 rating should have been applied."

After more than 3,000 people signed the petition, the government finally issued a response.

"The Government is satisfied with the BBFC's procedure and with the provisions for appeal, and will not be intervening in this process.

"The Government has recently announced a review aimed at helping parents ensure that their children are protected from exposure to inappropriate material in games. This is not intended to restrict the choice of material available to adults."

So... who's up for some gunpowder, treason and plot?

DISCLAIMER: The above query is in jest. I would appreciate it if armed police did NOT break down my front door and arrest me for conspiring against the government. Thank you.

Sigh i got an email about this, this morning.

Oh well just have to get it from Holland. Any idea of a release date and Dutch website that will be selling it

Jeeeeezzz!!! That's the point of putting an 18 cert on the box!!!

Booze, porn, fags, gambling, DVDs and CDs have age ratings on em, and parents don't need help understanding not to buy their kids those things, don't they? Rolling Eyes
ted1138 on 19 Sep '07
Perhaps the government should allow the sale of these games under and adult rating but then sue parents if they buy it for their kids.

You mean by putting an age certificate on the packaging? Oh wait, that already gets done.

You just know that what's going to happen is they'll only get sold in "adult" shops so anyone who wants them will have to wear a dodgy trenchcoat and feel really ashamed. Technically you could still buy them, but I bet most people wouldn't in that circumstance.

This smacks so much of the 'video nasty' episode of the 80s.

A complete over reaction by the BBFC and a blatant retro view of Britain today.

Speaking of which.......why exactly is the government getting involved in this issue ?

I'd suggest they go away and try and solve some of the real problems in Britain - gun crime, the rise of street gangs, immigration, the NHS.....you know, those sort of real, everday problems. But hey, that's just my wild and crazy opinion.

They got involved because of the petition containing over 3000 signatures that was sent to them, as the article says...

So ? There's dozens of petitions doing the rounds all the time. A lot of them get sent to the governemnt but we don't hear about them.

Mention a computer game though.....

i can't understand why rockstar just don't submit the toned down version that's been rated M in the US, instead of wasting time with appealing for the original version to pass a rating here. i can't really see that the censors are going to suddenly change their minds on it. i agree it should've just been passed as a 18 rating, but because of the paranoia of kids getting hold of adult games they won't risk it.
j.bullingham on 19 Sep '07
And i say why don't they just let holland sell a multi language version and post the selling websites on their website as advertisements, problem solved.
rabbit0147 on 19 Sep '07
i can't see they're gonna fund a pal version just for sale in the netherlands. if also it's still the AO version sony and nintendo won't licence it on their consoles.
