PAL Paper Mario broke

Six month delay, crash glitch added. Nintendo offers replacements...
If you're reading this from a PAL territory, you'll have had to wait six months longer than the NTSC boys to get your hands on Super Paper Mario - with a new game-crashing glitch thrown in.

The new bug crashes the game and forces you to restart your Wii and continue from your previous save point. Fortunately, it's avoidable. We'll let Nintendo talk you through it:

"At the start of Chapter 2-2, you will come across a character called Mimi. She will tell you to go to the farthest room on the first floor to meet a character called Merlee. Enter that room and press the green switch. A trap will be triggered, and a spiked ceiling will descend upon Mario. Before the ceiling reaches him, flip into 3D and jump on it to find a key.

"If you pick up the key, you won't run into any problems. Use it to open the locked door to Mimi's right. However, if you talk to Mimi without picking up the key, the game will freeze. You will then have to turn off your Wii console and start again from your last save point."

Nintendo apologises and says that the error won't damage your Wii or game disc, and if you simply can't bare the thought of owning a game containing a glitch, Nintendo will announce a replacement procedure soon.

That's a typical bug that should have been picked up in testing.

Poor PAL owners. Nintendo just cant stop messing you about can they?
Soooo happy I got an import Wii
mfnick on 19 Sep '07
I passed that particular point without a problem but can anyone tell me if they have suffered from another glitch? If I turn on my Wii with SPM inside, click on the disk window and then click on 'start game' before the background loads, the whole thing freezes, every time. I have to remove the power socket to unfreeze everything. Shoddy. It's just a good job I'm enjoying the game.

Ah that's ok then, I'm way past that part. About to start chapter 4 with my new "space helmet". Oh by the way my previous sentence contains the spoiler that you go into space.

I haven't had any problems with this magnificent game so far, unless liking it too much is a problem. Gameplay is genius, locations are great, dialogue and characters are funny and entertaining. I'm enjoying it more than I the last few games I played, Bioshock and Heavenly Sword. Nothing but praise for this game.

^ Rolling Eyes Moron.

That's bad news for Nintendo. First Mario Party 8 gets recalled, and now this. Can it be true that Nintendo are getting even lazier in converting games to PAL format?

wouldnt suprise me if metroid3 will be the same seen as though North Americans got that in August...they only test the NTSC version and just throw the PAL version on a disc and have done with it

Does that make you feel like a big man?

Luckily I completed the game a few months back, but you truly are the scum of the Earth.

Who are you and what have you done with the real, Wii-bashing Falloutwarchief? Very Happy
Thaxus on 19 Sep '07
I think Nintendo need to pull there finger out and stop screwing up our games.

We've had Mario Party containing the word 'Spastic' and now Paper Mario with a glitch that crashes your game.

Whatever next? Manhunt 2 containing blood? Razz

Jesus Christ the spoiler thing was a joke. Shocked I'm shocked to find these replies. I wouldn't care whether I knew you went to space or not. It's not like I gave away the ending (mostly because I haven't seen it yet). Good thing I couldn't give a s**t what nick_gc or scully think.
Brian Bloodaxe, I'm not too sure what you mean by your Fear Uncertainty Doubt comment, so you're ok.

Who are you and what have you done with the real, Wii-bashing Falloutwarchief?
Oh I have plenty of bash left in me I'm sure. This is the best Wii game I've played so far and I'm enjoying it immensely, but you have to remember it makes insignificant use of the Wiimote's pointer or motion controls, which are usually my gripe with the system. Still, it has shown me that the Wii can do great things under the right circumstances.
falloutwarchief on 19 Sep '07
Hold up, they are "still" selling a game with a known fault.

Like to see them try this in America.

God, you really are an bottom aren't you! Although i have to agree that it is a great, great game. I've just passed, i mean really JUST passed that bit in the game so i should be safe.
gbenlcfc on 19 Sep '07
i guess it's something that could be over looked in testing. in japan the 1st copies of endless ocean/forever blue had to be recalled, due to a crash when certain fish were added to the aquarium. so it isn't just pal games that get over looked. also a bug in the american metroid 3 is being removed from the pal version. i just think nintendo just need to play test every format of their games better. give us a job!
j.bullingham on 19 Sep '07
Yep, I encountered the bug while playing Chapter 2-2 of Super Paper Mario but thankfully you can get around it otherwise I wouldn't have been very happy at all. The game is great but these kind of bugs really should have been picked up during testing, there's no excuse for it really. These fatal bugs are not the kind of thing you expect from Nintendo, in fact I don't recall seeing any glitches of this nature in any of their games until I got the Wii, it's almost like they've gotten lazy/complacent. Confused

Have they been taking lessons from Microsoft and other 360 publishers perhaps, who seem content with their release-first-patch-later mentalities? Wink
Darren1967 on 19 Sep '07
& I thought that was the whole point of the update as soon as you load it for the first time =-/

I don't see either why everyone is getting so worked up. falloutwarchief made an obvious joke, & I don't see how there being a level in space is such a big deal anyway Rolling Eyes

I have to agree. Nintendo had a great rep before Wii game glitches. I recall a similar glitch in the PAL version of Twilight Princess.
ciaran211 on 19 Sep '07
Couldn't they release patch for that? Xbox 360 and PS3 get patches. Why not Wii?
wildhook2 on 19 Sep '07
I encountered that! It froze up on me there, and in another place too (Can't remember where Sad ) I just plugged it out though and started again. (You can't turn off the Wii or eject the disc when it freezes, which is actually dangerous I guess. You really shouldn't plug out things when they're on, right?)
Occono on 19 Sep '07
Have they been taking lessons from Microsoft

Nah, woulda done f-all for 18 months or so if they'd followed MS's lead!
Wozzakl on 19 Sep '07
let me get this straight, they delay the game first so it can be released on the wii instead of the gamecube (this is a port after all) so it already gets released about 6 months after it was supposed to, then they delay it for another 6 months before they let us have it in Europe and somewhere in between they manage to break the game. what happened to Nintendo's policy of not releasing games until they are perfect? I'm just glad I didn't buy the game at the weekend.

anyhow, its not exctly THAT unrelentingly painful a bug tbh, you can get arund it easily enough, so no big deal.

edit: spelling

That's a bit harsh - particularly when you consider mario has never been anything to do with story line. Who gives a flying bottom whether you find out if you go to space or not - ninty whores out so many screenshots that if it is true i'm sure it would be on one of them.

On top of that, it's not a Halo, Grim Fandango, FF or any other story-driven title...... I couldn't give a cack whether Mario spends a level in the centre of Baghdad as long as the gameplay is up to its usual standard.
chris_gower on 19 Sep '07
Mine crashes out half way thorough the 100 rooms trial. Highly annoying as their arn't any saves in it. Sad
jubbgi01 on 19 Sep '07
I have to say, Ive read quite a few reviews of Super Paper Mario, and in those reviews, seen a pew pictures set in the 'space' levels.
The TV spots in britain clearly contain a quick glimps of Bowser floating about in 'space' too.
So I really dont see why people are annoyed at the mention of the 'space' levels O_o
Its not like it was a well kept secret.....or any real kind of spoiler.

On a plus side, I managed to get the game the monday before it was released here, and finished it 2 days after (clocking just under 20 hours of play). Other than a few mundane parts, the game was just awesome.
Many other people already know this, but:
Bowser.
Rocks.

For anybody planning on playing it, if you play so that Bowser is in a lot of the cut scene's, he comes out with the funniest lines. In my opinion anyway Razz

Just wait until Chapter 6. It's so boring, really lets down an otherwise awesome game. Oh, and bashing three blocks in a stupidly convoluted pattern? That's annoying too.
AJDarkstar on 19 Sep '07
i think it's more a problem with the wii console, as it's crashed and frozen with other games, and also sometimes using the internet channel until they did an update for the web browser. the fact you have to actually unplug the console, rather than being able to reboot by pressing the reset button is also dangerous.
