Halo 3 Review

Review: Fight finished in record time
Halo 3 will be in your 360 in a matter of days. There's no point even cracking one of those overused "unless you've been hiding in a..." lines because even if you have, you'll still know about the imminent arrival of Bungie's monolithic megaton shooter.

It's the final chapter in the trilogy and it ties up all the loose ends quite nicely. Or does it? That's something you're going to have to find out for yourself (or watch on YouTube) as Microsoft has banned anyone from talking about anything to do with the story so's not to spoil it for you. Bless 'em.

"The public knows the Covenant has invaded Earth, that the Chief returns, that the Arbiter is in the game, and that a huge artefact has been discovered in Africa," reads a piece of paper handed to us upon arrival at a very posh hotel in London. "Anything outside of that is off limits."

We don't want to spoil the game for anyone, but there are things that directly relate to the gameplay experience we want to talk about but can't (not yet anyway). So if I'm being a bit vague, it's on purpose. Warning over.

The Halo fan base is split up into several different factions. Some love the multiplayer and think 'Meh' to the campaign, while it's the opposite for others. There are also those that look down their noses at anyone they think takes the game too seriously. Either way, there's a lot expected from the conclusion of the campaign. So I hit 'Start New Game' with a few butterflies in my tummy.

Six and a half hours later it was all over. But I was playing it on Normal and to say I've played Halo before is an understatement. Add a few hours onto that figure for Heroic and plenty more for Legendary (bastard hard as you'd expect and a massive challenge against the AI) and yes, you still have a short single player game. Shorter than Halo 2. I had to watch the ending a couple of times to get my head around what happened too. That I can't talk about either...

While the single player game is short and sweet, it packs in all the trademark Halo features you'd expect at a pace that rarely lets up. There are big set pieces, 'dramatic' moments that get the blood pumping and some great battles that are a pleasure to be in the thick of. But this is Halo and it knows exactly what it needs to do.

Rather than trying something new, it sticks to the run and gun formula of the first two. But it doesn't need to do anything else. Would you want to risk upsetting the fans? Me neither. There's Halo Wars to look forward to if you want something different from Halo.

The calls of a return to the wide open spaces of the original have thankfully been heeded. A lot of the action takes place outdoors (in jungles and deserts mainly) and features great use of vehicles. As it's a fairly linear experience, there isn't much need to wonder around and look under every leaf, but you can if you want, which will please many.

Repetition of levels is something else that's been addressed. The first two games featured a lot of 'going out the way you came in', and 3 does too, it just not as drawn out or long winded. The single player campaign mode is easily the tightest of all three, but third time lucky (with more powerful hardware) was to be expected.

We all know that the multiplayer will be massive and there have been a million reports about how awesome the multiplayer is (it is by the way) but co-op and user generated content (UGI) is what the game does better than most.

It's clearly an area that's been picked out and identified as extremely important to the Halo community and Bungie has dished up an impressive feature set of ways to get the most out of Halo 3's short story.

You can turn on various mini-games within the campaign that pit you and your teammates against each other for scores. It's a bit like the Kudos system in PGR that awards you with points for stylish play. If we stick a plasma grenade to an enemy and you spray bullets everywhere before killing another, we'll get more points than you because you're a bit rubbish and we're not.

The Skulls also are back and they now have a purpose; they mix up gameplay with stuff like turning enemies invisible and you can turn them on and off till your heart's content. These meta games, as they're called, turn the single-player game into a multiplayer game with maximum replay value. All skulls on in Legendary mode? Bring it!

Oh and have we mentioned Forge yet? The map editor that lets you place all kinds of objects, anywhere you want on any of the maps. You can't change the geometry of the levels but this won't stop millions of fans coming up with their own game types.

If they're good enough Bungie says they could appear on Live for everyone to sample. And thanks to the Saved Films you can now record and upload them to Bungie's website for the world to see - no need to dick about trying to plug in your VCR to capture that Warthog you've just blown from one side of Narrows to the other. There should also be a lot of Red Versus Who action too.

This side of the game will be absolutely massive and we can't wait to see what the community comes up with. Slayer with rockets is good enough for us but the implications for UGI are huge and a massive step towards something like the PC modding scene for the console audience.

Halo 3 is the gaming equivalent of a Hollywood blockbuster. It's not going to revolutionise the genre - it's not meant to - it's meant to be great fun, which it is. Never lose sight of that. The visuals, guns, vehicles, enemies, set-pieces, musical score... they've all been cranked up to 11 to create an experience up there with the best sci-fi properties.

Halo knows what it does best and it's done it. If you're one of those that is physically sick when even the world Halo is mentioned, we feel a little sorry for you. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, as ours mums would say. You're genuinely going to miss out on an incredible gaming experience that offers many different ways to play it, alone with your mates, or against the global community.

NOICE. I think we all knew this game was going to rock.
Reace on 23 Sep '07
I was hoping for a bit more of an 'epic' campaign...Oh, well.
theideal on 23 Sep '07
seems this is the basic score coming from everywhere I must say i'm dissapointed with the story being short but hey ho I still can't wait to "finish the fight" as it were BRING IT ON!!
jaymilner on 23 Sep '07
i wish i was in argus when they were selling it early
animal17582 on 23 Sep '07
I'm still excited but why has every big 360 game been so short?

And on the downers what is the stuff they can't talk about? This surely invalidates the review if you're leaving out the negatives then gleefully highlighting the fact?

Whatever, short is better than long and ponderous that halo 2 had become. They played in normal, I'll most definately be playing on heroic to get a true indication of the single player's quality
ledickolas on 23 Sep '07
9.7... Bungie has done it again it seems. I can't wait to get it!
kb9h2opolo on 23 Sep '07
they really didnt go into much depth

im not even a third through the gametrailers review and a lot more was explained than in that

not a great review
allyjweir on 23 Sep '07
Sorry CVG, that was the biggest waste of webspace ever.

You tell us nothing we dont already know other than it's short (you do realise every other game these days is that length? 6-8 hours has been the norm for quite some time in every genre but sandbox)

Seriously.... if you're gonna tease people by telling us the review is gonna be up at 8 on sunday, at least have something worth while. I know you're on a bunch of NDA's, but this review was pitiful.
MrXBob on 23 Sep '07
Well I know you said it would be vaugue...but come on....

I understand its not your fault but if Bungie are going to allow reviews of their game before it is out then they need to allow you to actually tell us about the f**kin thing. There were a couple things there I didn't know about but I havn't followed the game. I'm sure to everyone else most of that review will be old news. Confused
GT500 on 23 Sep '07
sweet.. worried about the other stuff though... 9.7? good enough for me
Strontiumfox on 23 Sep '07
Halo, for me, has always been about the campaign mode.
I love Halo:CE with a passion and think that the Silent Cartographer is the best FPS level of all time.
I still play it to this day (honestly!).

My levels of expectation for Halo 2 were ridiculously high and, inevitably, I was disappointed. The Campaign Mode should have been so much better.

After 3 years of waiting I'm a little disappointed to hear that the campaign mode is fairly short. I'll reserve judgment intil I've played it myself but I won't be too suprised it it doesn't live up to the hype.
Digital Love on 23 Sep '07
The downers cant be that bad, if they still scored it 9.7.
quain-chi on 23 Sep '07
Question:

does it have repeated backgrounds like the other two games?

please answer this when someone gets the game
timestops on 23 Sep '07
Awesome, s**t review but it got 9.7 so i know my preorder isn't a waste of time!

And don't worry bout the short campaign, just make sure to play it on heroic or legendary (whichever is hardest) from the start, you shouldn't be able to breeze through that in 6 hours!

Catch everyone on Live! wednesday, gamertag in my sig.

HATING.

you have no idea how hard it is to resist having a go at this game after the enormous disappointment that was halo 2. the fact that I don't play online very often and what seems to be another disappointing singleplayer mode means that if I get a 360 I wont buy this game, but you all have fun now.

I’m disappointing to hear its short considering how much time they have had to develop the game but the good thing about Halo is it’s always been fun to replay the main campaign.
DaRockwilder1 on 23 Sep '07
9.7 Wow. Must be leaps and bounds better than the first two then.
Mogs on 23 Sep '07
16 player mp ain't that much though is it? PDZ allowed 32 at launch, what gives bungie? on the flip side 4-player co-op sounds great, looking forward to that oh,and forge. i wonder if cvg will re-review it in a few days and tell us about the thing's they saw as minus points (not allowed!? tut-tut cvg).

i wonder if cvg will re-review it in a few days and tell us about the thing's they saw as minus points (not allowed!? tut-tut cvg).

i think if you re-read it you'll see the only thing they aren't allowed to talk about is the story.

so, the story is obviously a bit weak. nowt to worry about there.

at the end of the review they mention the 'weak' story mode as one minus but then say there's other stuff they're not allowed to mention. what's the point of reviewing the thing?

im a huge fan of the first halo and the books, cant express in words how disappointed i am that the campaign mode took them a measly 6.5 hours to complete, even on normal. i dont want short and sweet, i want quantity and quality... the background for a great story is there, they are using excellent hardware capable of making it look gorgeous, the halo2 multiplayer formula has been tried and tested.... so why couldnt they have spent a bit more time on the sodding campaign mode? i just hope its fun to give it that classic halo replayablity factor.

The downers cant be that bad, if they still scored it 9.7.

I'm the downers was something to do with the story, not something necessarily bad with the game but somethin' that upset them?

Also, I thought it was quite a good and accurate review of what's to come without describing any of the events that you go through; it's Halo, but better

CVG, if you read this, sit through the credits if you haven't already!
jjjoel on 23 Sep '07
anyone know what the flood are like? They were awsome shotgun fodder in 1, rubbish in halo 2.

I read elsewhere that normal is a lot easier this time round for the 'ahem' casual gamer. Noone on here is allowed to start on anything less than heroic (which has been ratcheted up a notch comparatively) and that's an order soldier.
ledickolas on 23 Sep '07
I'm a campaign only person - enjoyed the multiplayer when playing LAN but never enjoyed the Live experience (yea so shoot me).

Halo 3 was going to be the game that either made me buy 360 again, or not. and hearing tha the single player is actually shorter than halo 2 has pretty much made me decide against it - as that was a major disappointment. oh wll
chris_gower on 23 Sep '07
9.7 Wow. Must be leaps and bounds better than the first two then.

9.7, i expected them to give it an inflated score, but doubt its warranted. 9.7 for a game which has downers, and is only 6.5 hours long!? for Ł40! i remember some people moaning about heavenly sword for having a campaign mode that long. yea, i know your gonna mention the multiplayer, but if it plays like the other two i'll have to pass. also, xbox live is filled with morons, no two ways about it; play on live, play with morons.

so what are cvg going to give to the games that are actually good?

also, they should win an award for the most vague review ever. no mention of sound/graphics. maybe they are so bad you have to resort to the old xbox slogan "its not about graphics, its about gameplay"?
lmaolmao on 23 Sep '07
One of the guys I work with started playing it at 10 last night and finished it at 5 in the morning so 6.5-7 hours must be pretty accurate. I was hoping for more from the single player as well - like what Digital Love said, the Silent Cartographer is bloody amazing - especially the opening sequence! The next level Assault on the Control Room is also pretty damn good, getting to drive around in the Scorpion tank is still so much fun to this day! I played both of them last night in preparation! Razz As long as they have levels that match these in fun and scope I think I'll be happy! Never played Halo 2 multiplayer on Live so I can't wait to get into this now!

Ever heard of Battlefield or Counter-Strike or World of Warcraft or Guild Wars or Enemy Territory or Lord of The Rings Online or Team Fortress or Unreal Tournement or Quake 3 or any other online-multiplayer focused game? They tend to get good scores with NO singleplayer. Halo 3 is said to have a great but short singleplayer full of replay value as well as a fantastic online as well as forge. Yet you are surprised it gets a good review, ha.

As for 'graphics not gameplay' I believe that was what sony said when the xbox complete with hard drive came out and made better looking games than the ps2. Halo, a launch game for the original xbox many years ago is still better looking than anything the ps2 has brought out.

Seems like an inflated score to me, it'll be interesting comparing this with other shooters I've played recently on the 360, just to see how much better it supposedley is.
The review was awful, I could have written that and I haven't played the game...very disappointed in CVG

Halo haters haven't really got a lot of grounds to slag this game off anymore.

It's really quite embarrassing to hear the scraping of barrels.

I await Tekken's to coming wading in at some point with his fascinating insight on the state of play.

well, all them are on pc....i was saying xbox live is full of idiots. people i dont want to play with. the free month when you first sign up for silver was enough to put me off for life.

yea, well, thats what sony said last time. this time microsoft is touting hd graphics every 3 seconds. and you look at halo 3, which plays the same as halo 2 (i.e - boringly, slow and repetitive, with a chocking framerate) which youve had in hd from launch day of the 360. so essentially halo3 is an upgrade, but this time with an ending.

this series should have never left last gen, and it LOOKS like it hasnt.

most sensible comment i've heard uttered on these boards all day.

i have to say, that the game sounds so multiplayer/live centric, its not even a bargain bin game for me anymore. 4 player co-op is a stupid idea, halo is doing it, and the ps3 game haze is doing it, its dumb, unless its something like serious sam, and the spaces are made for it. tight corridors with four people jamming down them? no thanks.

If you want to see last gen just look at the new MGS game, looks and plays just like the PS2 versions! Same goes for that new Killzone 1.5. This generation is s**t.

Using platform secific reviews from xbox or playsation affiliates was bad enough (lots of PSM reviews on here) but pushing unfinished opinion............RIP to the cvg i loved.

ok i love Halo but im gutted to hear that the campaign is so short and its slightly put me off waiting.
I think that microsoft has been handing out cheques because for a game that does have a few bad points there seems to be to many high ratings for this game

No. For real unbiased insight you want to wait for Mark240773 (or whatever his date of birth is.) He's no doubt dusting off his thesaurus as we speak. Unless of course he's taken his 360 back to the shop in disgust and swapped it for a Cray Super Computer. But then when has not actually owning the console stopped him before...?

considering the conext of previous games, and the screenshots indicating several areas where i think 4 player co-op will be a bit of single file. but hey, if bungie made it fun then good for them.

You just can't please people these days, the games not out there fully yet and people are already slating it's shortness. From what i've read and having never played any version of Halo the fight looks to me that it'll be fought mostly online which is where modern gaming is at these days, it only seems like a natural succession for the series to go there.

Most gamersd want to get the best out of the Ł40-50 notes they're spending but people expectations are way too high these days. Only last week I dropped Ł40 for Heavenly Sword and although great while it lasted wasn't long enough, if there was some kind of online death matches it would be an essesntial purchase to any PS3 owner.

This game is the jewel in MS crown without question and the hype surrounding it has been phenomenal. Just give it an extensive playtest yourself before slagging it off.

I don't care if the single player campaign is short, I just want it to be better than Halo 1 and 2. Is that really too much to ask? Is it really that unreasonable to demand a competent single player experience?

Fortunately, it looks like they finally got it semi-right. Well, it's about goddamn time.
Dinalfos on 24 Sep '07
Well im a campaign player I thouroughly enjoyed 1 & 2 yeah I know some of you didn't like H2 & your entitled to that opinion.

As for the length of the game why would anyone here who has any kind of experience playing the other Halo's want to play it on a lower setting & clock it first time?

Crank up the difficulty & instead of playing & playing & playing until you get to the end in the quickest possible time why not play it for a couple of hours then do something else it will take you longer to get through it & your purchase will last longer that way, Honestly what is it with people wanting to spend 40-50 quid on a game then complete it as quickly as possible then bitch that it is to short.
Richyrich316 on 24 Sep '07
Who wrote this? The office junior, right? I've written shopping lists that flow better than this drivel. One of the most eagerly-anticipated games ever, reviewed on a high profile site by a glorified coffee-maker. And haven't you heard of a spell checker?
locky_uk_2000 on 24 Sep '07
Mark24~~~~~ has been pretty un-biased of late really so give the guy a break. We moan when he doesn't own a 360 and complains about it but then when he actually goes out and buys one and talks about buying Halo3 etc we moan at him for that... the guy can't win.

I'm only joshing with the guy. But you've got to admit he does kind of invite these type of comments from time to time.

True i won't dispute that.
JohnWalker on 24 Sep '07
think i will wait for a second hand copy as i'm only interested in finishing the single player story, and i ain't paying 40 quid for no 6 hour game.
wudragon on 24 Sep '07
If you're posting on this site then chances are you're not a casual gamer. The complaints in the reviews on the game being really short are in fact the product of the reviewer's rush to play through the game on normal and get the review online.

If you bother with better reviews (teamxbox, gametrailers, ign) you will find out that normal has been made significantly easier to cater for casual (pussies that can't be bothered with applying skill to task). Noone should be playing on less than heroic (proper ai, more numerous enemies), it's been stated already that the game will last 15 hrs (gametrailers) when played properly) Halo 2 could be busted quickly on normal with a proficient player, many a protracted veichicle section in there to increase length.

Now to the halo fans: you won't be disappointed if you don't look for the easy way.

To all the vocal nonsubscribers: who really gives a toss what you think?
ledickolas on 24 Sep '07
Hey have any of you read the books, namely the ghosts of onyx?Do any of you know if the other surviving spartan 2s and 3s make an appearance in this game. I've seen the ending lol I know its bad of me, but I couldnt resist lol!

lol! lol! lol! you feckin dickhead grow up. t**t.

I await Tekken's to coming wading in at some point with his fascinating insight on the state of play.

School hasnt started yet so he has not got any pc access at the moment. Laughing

I'm surprised he hasn't posted yet.

Wink

Mark has simmered a bit, I think that Sony have had to let him go Wink So now he works freelance and I think I read somewhere he had all 3 consoles now but I can't be sure. Razz

I've completed Halo in 7 hours on Heroic, which is why I always play it on Legendary. You just have to pick the right difficulty otherwise all you are doing is robbing yourself. Most shooters can be completed very quickly on an easy setting.

It is Tekken that is the one true troll. He somehow misses the irony of his own moniker.

If I'm gonna pay Ł40 for what basically amounts to an online multiplayer shooter, I think I'm gonna wait and concentrate on COD4. It looks much better to me and when it comes out I think Halo would've been a waste of money. I'll have to make do with PES7 and PGR4 in the meantime. I'm bored of Halo now.
Downleyboy on 24 Sep '07
It proberly is a good game but seriously are those the screenshots from in game because they dont look as good as i thought at all, id even go as far and say that they look as good as metroid prime 3

i was expecting wow! graphics, pcs truely do wipe the floor with consoles

its still must be a great game tho to get a 9.7 as im all for gameplay over graphics

Oh and 6 1/2 hours. 360 fans were saying heavenly sword is crap for being this length. Haha Screw you 360 fans. Twisted Evil

Yea, but i don't recall Heavenly Sword having such an immense online portion?

Another un-biased post by Tekken. I look for his posts when i want to really get to a heart of the matter, his insights into the gaming world will forever guide my opinion.

You don't suppose Mark and Tekken are the same guy do you? A Dr Jeckyll to Mark's Mr Hyde persona. It would explain why one of them has become more subdued and the other one is an increasingly raging torrent of hate.

Hey Cap'n, I will never be in the same league as Tekken. Laughing I'm looking forward to Halo and have it pre-ordered like the rest. A little disappointed by the sound of the single player until I spoke to a friend who has played it and he assures me that it is immensely replayable.

I'll be watching out for the disbelievers and saving a sticky just for them. Wink

Either you're being honest and have a 360, or you are an evil genius masterminding an elaborate setup to give us lots of "Halo 3 is crap, ive got it, play <insert ps3 game here> instead" posts. Very Happy

I hope it really is the former!

It is the former! Very Happy I've had an Elite since release and have been waiting for Halo 3 and PGR 4 ever since.

Seeing as I've only had the elite for a short time I am in need of some buddies to compare times and scores etc. Would appreciate very much if you could add me to your friends list.

Bought it Yesterday played it for 3 hours and just like Halo 2 what a complete let down. Can't believe I've been looking forward to this game for ages and the graphics are like an Xbox 1 game. I'm going to complete it (should take all of about another 6 hours by all accounts!!!) play it online and only hope it improves. Otherwise its resistance and Warhawk all the way for me!!!!
Scottyuk on 26 Sep '07
Simply fantastic. It wraps up the series nicely, sticking to the "If it aint broke, don't fix it" phylosophy, which I fully agree with. It seems a little sad that this is going to be the final game in the series, but I guess if Bungie kept on making sequel after sequel the series would get stale very quickly like the imfamous E.A titles that are released every year(Fifa, Burnout, NFS etc etc).

This game is a classic and should be remebered that way.

This game is a classic and should be remebered that way.

I won't be able to tell. My 10 month old 360 RRoD'd last night - on bloody Halo day of all days; so I can't play it until they fix the damn thing.

I had just sent Mark240473 a Friend Request however, so can't rule out the possibility that he somehow managed to brick my machine via the wonders of t'internet. Grrrrr!!!! Evil Sony Lover!! Twisted Evil
