THQ unveils new WH40K RTS expansion

New interplanetary campaign and two new races introduced in Dawn of War - Soulstorm
Relic's RTS Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is getting a third expansion, which is a standalone affair.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, to give it its full and lengthy title, features "an extensive interplanetary campaign spanning an entire star system" according to THQ and introduces two new races - one of which has been confirmed as the Dark Eldar.

On top of that, the existing seven races will be the recipient of new units, air units are being introduced and a medal system is being added to online multiplayer.

Plus, the "meta-game introduced in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade is further expanded to an interplanetary scale in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, allowing players to battle across an entire star system."

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is due in spring 2008.

Ooo, good stuff.

So - we've already had *ticks off on fingers*

Space Marines
Orcs
Eldar
Chaos
Imperial Guard
Tau
Necrons

One of the two races in this expansion is Dark Eldar. So that leaves:

Tyranids
Daemonhunters
and Witch Hunters

I'm sure I heard before that they want to leave Tyranids to DoW2 because the current engine can't do them justice. Personally, I'm hoping for Daemonhunters - Grey Knight Terminators are COOL.

*Hangs head in ubergeek shame*

HAS to be tyranids, surely? What else is left?

edit: Oh, that's who else is left. thanks!

I'm well pleased - they said after Dark Crusade that they weren't expecting to do any more expansions, but this one sounds cool. Like the DC one but galaxy-wide. Can you imagine trying to defend all of those? Crazy Smile

Initial rumours point to Witch Hunters, apparantely.
I'd of thought Daemonhunters would be more likely though, what with them already adding Grey Knights in DC.

Thinking about it, maybe Daemonhunters are a bit too similar to Space Marines - Witch Hunters would be a little different, and the predominantly (totally?) female troops would be an interesting twist.

Can't wait, DOW is my fave RTS.

Sounds awesome! Dark Eldar burn under my Eldar skillz! Razz

Please Tyranids, can’t see the other races left being different enough from the space marines.

This should be great. Hope the “air” units are good though, and they take a leaf out of Creative Assembly’s book for the capaign; Dark Crusade campaign was weak as imo.

I agree. The only race that comes close to them is the orkz, and the other ones are very similar to Space Marines.

I know there's a mod of 'nids, but they haven't finished yet. Though they are brilliantly modelled.

Ah, found it:

Q: Will Tyranids ever appear in Dawn of War
A: Not in this version, no. Relic has stated that the current game engine for Dawn of War will do the Tyranid race any justice. Thus they won't appear.

source

Edit: Ooo, but further down on the same page (in the Soul Storm FAQ bit) it says the 9th race could be the Witch Hunters or the Tyranids...

Interesting...

Where's DoW 2?! That's the only game I'm prepared to build a new machine for with Vista.

I hope they nerf Necrons for this release.

I hope they nerf Necrons for this release.

they do things as they should be, so necrons are insanely powerful, therefore they are INSANELY powerful Razz
Shadow_Fury on 26 Sep '07
This is going to be good. And by this I mean really good. DoW has been my main RTS fetish fo a good while.
