In a new eye-opener from Sony the company's revealed that it's to drop backwards-compatibility support in PlayStation products.
"...we believe this [backwards compatibility] less important now than when we launched... Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences", Sony's said in a statement on its plan to phase out the 60GB PS3 in the UK and leave the new cut-down 40GB model as the only one available at retail.
Sony's 40GB PS3 marks the beginning of the end for backwards-compatibility support in PlayStation products then. The console won't play PS2 games, although according to Sony 'The backwards compatibility of PSone titles is achieved through software and the vast majority of PSone titles are backwards compatible with the new PS3".
Of course they don't want you playing old games - you've already bought them and there's no more profit in that for Sony. Therefor you MUST buy the newest update on the newest console to keep them in money.
Backwards compatibility for the PS2 (and it working with 99% of the PSone games) was the reason I sold my old grey model of PS1, but I don't want to sell my old consoles ever again, so despite it being handy for space, it doesn't bother me too much.
Their comments on it being significant for launch is funny though, yet again stating there weren't any PS3 tailored games that were worth getting for it at the time bar Motorstorm.
yeah but that's hardly space efficient is it? that's what people are looking for
I can see this move back firing, they could have at least waited til the software lineup was stronger. In the long term it's a fair enough strategy, but at this moment in time I don't think they needed any more bad press - the £350 bundle is probably worth promoting more than shifting focus to the 40gb model.

But there is no-one atm to play the line up and probebly by the time the line up is any good STILL no one wuda had one cos it costs you the GDA of a small african country to get one with another controller and the best of the s**t games they ahve in their line up atm
Well thats a huge step backwards for Sony in my opinion. Do they not realise how important backwards compatibility is to gamers?
This is like leaving out the rumble feedback on the PS3 pad to save money on licensing costs, a big mistake. Microsoft got a lot of stick for their poor Xbox game support, so why will Sony be any different?
Well, a survey taken about February 07 said that of gamers with a ps2 , approximately 9% made use of backwards compatibility. (can't remember the source - think it was referenced on joystiq.com
Backwards Compatibility in practice, is one of the least used features of consoles.... however, I think it is perhaps more important when selling the console.
So, it is more useful as a selling point rather than something that people will actually use.
Either way, I think after Sony criticising Microsoft for not supporting full-bc, it is a bit hypocritical to then remove it altogether.
I can't say I use backawards compatability very often. Maybe twice on my Wii and never on my Xbox 360, although I did keep a few games. The only thing it does do for me is reassure me that if I do have a craving to play an old game, I can safely get rid of my old console and (a) save some space and (b) get some money off my purchase by trading in my old console.
The thing I don't understand is why are Sony dropping backwards compatability when they can obviously do that with Software? Seems to be Sony just doesnt know their bottom from their elbow right now. They are struggling to get the customers and developers are looking elsewhere. Sony are scrambling to do whatever they can to get through this generation of consoles and with a bit of luck, be back on form for the next one.
WOW- 350 quid on a new console, no unique games, get it home and BAM...You can play your PSone games on it! That's such an amazing feature, REALLY show's off the graphical prowess of the system, really, I never wanted to play any better looking PS2 games anyway...
WOW- SONY you guys, you look after us well. Maybe you should come round for tea...
I think it's more a feature parents look for when eyeing up a Christmas present for young Johnny. After spending hundreds on PS2 games, they probably think they're somehow getting better value by having it be back-pat.
Must be said, I do use my Wii for playing GC games (nothing beats Super Monkey Ball 2's multiplayer bowling!) and bought the first two Halo games for use on my 360.

When limited brainpower prevents them from making a comment that is either original, intelligent or constructive, stupid people tend to find solace in sarcasm.
Iddiots... im fine i already got a ps3 but this really is stupid, they should at least release a software download so you can choose wether or not you want backwards compatibility surley that cant be dificult.
I think it's a shame, PS2s are dirt cheap now, but I liked the idea of being able to pick up the odd PS2 game without having to have the console taking up space...the licensing for this must have cost them a lot if they can cut the console price by this margin.
This looks like a sony retreat to me, they know the console is failing, so they are doing everything possible to get it's price down quickly.
@ rak49, good idea, even if they charged a bit extra for it, that would at least appeal to prospectuve buyers like me
I can't imagine it would be that much of an extra bother to continue with the backwards-compatibility.
Sure, if you have your PS2, then you can play your PS2 games on it, but what about in 5/10 years time when your PS2 has (probably) stopped working? You're supposed to go hunting on ebay for a replacement? Ridiculous.
I have a GameCube and a Wii, but I play all my GC games through the Wii.
Well, Sony have given me one final reason not to buy a PS3. It's obvious to me now that Sony really don't have a clue, as they stumble from one PR disaster to the next. I own a 360, and am happy that I can play Xbox classics like NInja Gaiden Black, OutRun 2/2006, and Panzer Dragoon Orta. I will soon purchase a Wii, and intend to keep the likes of MarioKart DD, F-Zero GX, and Zelda WW to play on it. If I want to continue playing WipEout Fusion, Maximo, and SSX Tricky I need to keep my PS2? Sorry Sony, I have no intention of owning two of your consoles simultaneously.
I've owned a PS3 since March and despite having not owned a PS2 for nearly two years now, I have a collection of some 15 or so PS2 games, including Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy XII and Canis Canem Edit.
For me, the PS2 emulation is a must-have, I can play the games through HDMI and they look slightly better than they would on an actual PS2, thanks to the upscaling and smoothing features. Also I already have three consoles connected to my HDTV - 360, PS3 and Wii - so I really wouldn't have wanted a PS2 as well. There are plenty of reasons why backwards compatibility is a good thing and one of them is that you can play ALL your PS games on one system instead of having to swap between three.
If Sony are phasing out backward compatibility with newer models then I'm glad I bought mine when I did and only hope that the existing emulation will still be including in later firmware updates and not removed altogether.
All I can do is point and laugh at the train wreck that is PS3. Sony are also just a complete joke. They mock MS for confusing gamers with multiple SKU's. Then they realize what a good idea it actually was and follow suit except they phase out numerous old SKU's in the process. They also mocked MS for the limited BC support stating how important it was and high-lighting it as a selling point for PS3. Now we fast forward to present day and Sony are eliminating BS support.
This mess will surely put gamers off PS3 as its just a shambles. Even if people wanted one, they can't purchase a PS3 without fearing that it may get a price drop, have features removed or even have to upgrade to a new controller when new games start making use of the rumble. I actually have mixed feeling on this PS3 shambles. Firstly im glad Sony have gotten a harsh wake up call as they thought PS3 would just walk to the #1 spot with ease due to the success of the previous consoles. Finally though, im quite sad as PS3 is 360's only real competition as Wii is aimed at a different market. Without decent conpetition MS can sit back and take it easy, which isn't good for 360 owners. What we want to see is Sony sorting themselves out and getting PS3 back on track so that us gamers can benefit from MS and Sony trying to best each other.

Good point, a close competition between Sony and MS will mean gamers win, which is the most important.
I think the train wreck thing is a bit over the top - people are being way over dramatic about things - however it is amusing watching how many things can go wrong for the PS3. Throughout this though, the PS3 has received a major price drop and presumably will begin selling in decent numbers as christmas approaches.
BluRay is a big thing for me, and I do want to get a PS3, but I also want Sony to get things sorted so I know I'm not gonna splash out on a console that will be improved or altered within the next couple of months.
At the moment, I think I will pick one up when the dualshock 3 is included in the package...hopefully there will be more than just the 40Gb console on the market...
Yeh me too I've been playing KOTOR on my 360, and I intend to get KOTORII as well, great games that I missed when they were released...thank god for BC
Question I have with all this is erm, what's so hard about having it in. I'm guessing it's to do with hardware, seeing as they mentioned PSone games are emulated with software. If it is to do with licenses and stuff, why are they even dealing with them? Don't they own the entire playstation market and make everything themselves? Doesn't make sense for Sony to go off and get some other company to come along and make an emulator for them for a lotta bloody money.
I like the irony of this , they've gone the other way to microsoft, in that Sony had nearly full back compat at the beggining of the PS3'S life and now they've got none (for the ps2), whereas microsoft are slowly edging slowly towards getting as much backward compatability as possible.
Translation - We screwed up on the cost of the console, now you are paying the price for our mess.... Here have a downgraded console and be happy about it. Of course you are paying for potential now and no decent exclusive games for the next 6 months.... laughable.
his kinda stuff is convincing me to abandon the PS3 all together. It really is gathering dust at the moment.
u may have fond memories of the games but stick them on and u get a shock. jaggies and the overall disgracefull graphics means its not long before u switch off again. u dont want that crap on a high def tv, just doesnt cut it anymore whatsoever.
That's your opinion. Obviously you are one of the graphic whores who will only touch the shiniest looking games, but there are plenty of other people who like their retro gaming (the old gameplay over visuals discussion). For Sony to basically take away the choice of whether or not to play some retro games is very belittleing and disrespectfull to gamers, who have helped let the PS2 become the success it is.
This move has excluded younger gamers with tight budgets, who usually ask their parents to buy them a console. For parents who aren't into gaming, all they care about is whether it has backwards compatibility. Else it will be another big and expensive hunk of plastic taking up space and not playing the games their kid already has bought for their PS2.
I can't help but feel Sony have no clue how to turn the tide with disappointing sales so far and no unique "must have software" that isn't a port. Already two games which were looking promising last year (Heavenly Sword and Lair) have gotten average reviews at best. And with the exception of Metal Gear Solid 4, I can't think of any other games to look forward to on PS3. But I'm relying on my fellow posters to name a few and prove me wrong
I'm really hoping Sony will get their act together. I think the best way to start is to fire their entire PR and Business planning departments for PS3 and hire new people that DO know what they are doing.
All of the Playstation executives need firing to be honest, not the poor shop-floor level employees that have to suffer the fallout of their diabolical decisions.
And with the exception of Metal Gear Solid 4, I can't think of any other games to look forward to on PS3. But I'm relying on my fellow posters to name a few and prove me wrong
The obvious ones are; Tekken 6 FFXIII FFXIII Versus Killzone 2 GT HD
That's all I can think of anyway. I'd say the main problem with PS3 is that it's best exclusives are 3rd party games meaning there's every chance they will be released on 360 like the majority of all the other former PS3 exclusive games. Sony need to make great flagship 1st party games where people HAVE to buy a PS3 to play those games rather than laying off PS3 in the hope exclusives will come out on 360 (MGS4?).

1) From a sales point of view, this is a bit of a balls-up by Sony - they have now given Microsoft a new USP (we don't count the Wii in this conversation)
2) From a practical point of view, surveys and polls have shown only a tiny minority use BC - millions and millions and MILLIONS of people don't touch it (most don't know it exists)
3) I have a problem with the fact that Microsoft's far from perfect BC was once a flaw that Sony would pick on, reiterating how theirs was far superior
4) Consumers have had their choice of SKUs cut, potentially making: - current customers feel that they have spent nearly £500 for features that aren't considered important, and - potential customers feel that they are being deprived of features that early adopters were given, no matter how much money they have.
Is this all so that early adopters in europe don't feel bad about paying so much more for theirs? They could easily have just dropped the price without making any changes to the hardware.
And the reason they dropped the price anyway is to target parents this X-mas who are unwilling to shell out more than £300 for a toy(that's how a parent sees these things not me ).

They don't make everything themselves and that's the problem. Some of the chips used in the PS2, though I don't know which ones, were made by other companies and Sony had to pay for them. Software emulation has to emulate the chips of the console so Sony had to pay fees to the makers of the original chips to use it.
Its all about Sony realising that they were wrong in assuming that people would be willing to pay the stupid asking price for the PS3 so they're trimming costs around the edges to bring the price a bit more in line with the 360's because if they didn't the PS3 would, and may still, get completely destroyed in the Christmas sales period which could well set it on the path to being in such a position of weakness that it may not recover (much like what happened to the original Xbox against the PS2, the market just became centered around the leader).
Coming on the PS3 threads to make your juvenile comments.
And its fanboys like you that don't help PS3's cause... This thread has been filled with constructive comments and opinions and yours has just soiled that flow.
It's not Sony's fault that the PS3 cost so much in Europe, they had to protect the sales of real Blu-ray players. How could they have gotten away with charging nearly a grand for a Blu-ray player if they only charged £300 for the PS3?
Hands up all those who played PS1 games on their PS2.
*also raises hand* I play them on my PS3 as well. One of the first things I did was check if FF7 worked Was disappointed when it didn't but one update later was all it took. I also play my Xbox games on my 360 - those that work anyway). My HDTV only allows for two consoles to be plugged in at once (plus the Wii) so it's a bit of a pain to have to set one up every time I want to play a game. That said though, I still use my Saturn and Dreamcast quite extensively. Sure the games look dated, but they're still as much fun as they were when they were fresh out of the wrapper. BC is something I enjoy quite often so Sony better not drop support for it on the older model PS3!

Arghhh! Sony really have lost the plot now. I really can't see a way back for the Ps3. I'll be amazed if it doesn't finish 3rd behind both Wii and Xbox 360.

It's our fault for paying too much for stuff we don't need.

Ah yes, of course. It's the customer's fault that the PS3 costs so much. That makes perfect sense.

I think they probably will finish behind 360 overall, though they could turn it round and it will be closer fought than in previous years However, the wii, while i can see being a market leader for another year, at the end of the day, the hardware is C0ck, and the system is faddish, overhyped and with a library submerged in a deluge of mini-games and non-games... i think in a couple of years people will realise that they wasted their money on old hardware that developers have stopped making the effort developing for...
...with a library submerged in a deluge of mini-games and non-games...
That's the only legitimate part of your rant. There is definitely a danger of the Wii being perceived exclusively as a party machine, which is drastically selling its potential short.
I didn't think that I would use the backward compatibility too much on the PS3. Boy was I wrong.
Due to the fact that the games list for the PS3 is currently very limited and that of those games, their not exactly kiddie friendly, I find myself using it quite a bit.
My little girl loves playing things such as Dora the Explorer, Barnyard, etc.
Without the BC, she wouldn't be able to do that without bringing out my big old PS2 again. I think this not only takes away a good feature (albeit not fully implemented) or the PS3, but also ends up making it far less attractive to families with young kids.
I just hope they continue working on BC for those consoles capable of it so even more games work. Somehow I don't think any future firmware revisions will improve that now with the recent announcement.
When I got my PS3, I kinda hoped it would be a real contender in the marketplace. Looks like I was wrong.
TUNE IN NEXT WEEK WHEN WE CONCLUDE OUR AMAZING ROMP THROUGH THE CRAZY UNIVERSE THAT IS SONY'S PR DEPARTMENT!
Do you own a PS3?
Well since I got mine I havn't played one Playstation 2 game on it.
You know why, because I have a Playstation 2. Amazing really when you think about it.
Excuse me now I have to go and rest that last conundrum took a lot of brain power.
Well the big joke is Sony said they were going to make M$ofts backwards compatibility look silly, well now who looks silly, it's Sony's own fault for saying/promising so much s**te before the thing was released in my own humble little opinion.
Before you start no I dont own a ps3 YET (although I do have access to my brothers which has been gathering dust since he bought it)as there simply are no games released so far that make me want it now.
I think that Sony has the idea that having a Blu Ray player is the most important feature, therefore they must keep it. Here's my point. When the PS2 came out it played dvds out of the box and it was a cool feature. I actually watched a few movies on it if I was on the road traveling, however I did not use it as my main source for watching dvds. Now, IF, Bluray does win out and become the primary format Bluray players will become a lot cheaper and have better features. Most people will buy separate players for them and not use the PS3 as the primary player. So having a Bluray player won't be that big a deal. IF Bluray doesn't win out and HD DVD becomes the primary then all the PS3's with Bluray is still insignificant. I think that Sony put Bluray in to help push their format to hopefully win the fight against HD DVD. The problem with that is they are making gamers pay for it. They could easily lower their cost and lower the price of the PS3 if they would get rid of the Bluray.Wait and see how Bluray vs. HD DVD turns out and then go from there. In the meantime hopefully they have picked up their sales and brought more games to offer their customers.

It's our fault for paying too much for stuff we don't need.
Ah yes, of course. It's the customer's fault that the PS3 costs so much. That makes perfect sense.
If we stop buying stuff at twice the price the Americans are paying, then yes, the prices here would drop. So it is our fault.
Hands up all those who played PS1 games on their PS2.
Sony is bumbling from one PR disaster to another. Who are these MORONs in their PR department? They know just the right thing to say to put a customer off. I wouldnt buy a PS3 to play PS2 games on it but its good to know you can play your old games on it and also to play any nice new PS2 exclusives on it. I for one played some really good PS1 games (FFVIII, MGS, etc) on my PS2 and enjoyed them... I was waiting for the PS3 prices to drop, but if this is what I'll get for a price drop then no thanks...
If they are completley phasing out the 60gb model for the 40gb one, what was the point in having the media card slots and the 4 usb ports.
I don't play many back compat games on either my PS3 or 360 but I still use it occasionly.
It is a bigger kick in the teeth in Europe than in the US and Japan since we didn't get machines with full b/c like they have and what about post PS3 release PS2 games. Ludicrous money saving hypocrites are Sony.
Cutting it all together will disuead a lot of people getting one and therefore there will be a Wii or a 360 in every home rather than the PS3 because as someone said it may not be used much but it is a selling point!
Hands up all those who played PS1 games on their PS2.
**Hand up**
I got a PS2 at launch, a big factor in that was the ability to play PS1 games, as I never had a PS1. Same with the 360, never had an Xbox but I could play most of the games on the 360. It's a great incentive to switch to a different brand as you will have a whole library of great games you never got the chance to play.
Hands up all those who played PS1 games on their PS2.
Hands Up too!
The PS3 has been gathering dust for some time now. I really found myself wanting one and I have two games, Resistance and Motorstorm and although they are pretty good games I'm bored of them now.
I was playing more PS1 and PS2 games on it than anything else. I even got God Of War 2 for it.
...with a library submerged in a deluge of mini-games and non-games...
That's the only legitimate part of your rant. There is definitely a danger of the Wii being perceived exclusively as a party machine, which is drastically selling its potential short.
Look, if the Wii is selling well in 5 years time, then fair play to Nintendo, they have managed the ultimate con:
Changing the casing of a console, but with the USP of a new controller, which could have been implemented into the previous design and managing to sell it at full price for a further 5 years.
I just think with all the casual gamers that it has attracted, the software sales will continue to be as low as they currently are.
The console is a fad for those casual gamers, it may not be for you, but I genuinly think in 3 years time, the 45 year old mums or whatever the crowd that Ninty are aiming at will end up with the Wii as a pretty ornament by the side of the TV with copies of brain training and wii sports fallen down the back of the TV stand gathering dust.
I bought one, owned it for a month and a half, felt like a mug, sold it straight away.
I now have a GBA, debating whether to buy a 360 or PS3 confident I won't feel like I had been tricked when I do make my purchase.
My sons have played there GC games on the wii (Super Smash all the time) xbox games on the 360 (Halo 2) and I do not need to keep 2 old systems on the shelf that is crowded with systems, games and remotes already.
I think it is stupid to delete a feature that they already have working. How much are they really saving on removing BC compared with how many more systems they could sell if they kept it. I was think about buying a PS3 for my sons at xmas, but i just do not have room or the TV and power connections to keep a PS2 and a PS3. I calculate the total price of a new system by subtracting how much I can sell the old one for it my buying decisions.
While sony is removing features, why not make there blu-ray players only play blu-ray dvd's not standard, dvd's. I sure that can save some money there also.
As one of those early adopters, and the owner of a few old PS2 titles, I've played Canis Canem Edit twice on my PS3. That's it. BC is no great loss, and for those with a back catalogue of PS2 games they simply have to keep on playing the choice is simple. Keep hold of your PS2. Or, as a previous poster suggested, pick up one for tuppence ha'penny on Ebay.
There's some top stuff coming for PS3, regardless of your company allegiances. I'm glad i'm along for the ride.
I honestly think that Sony are maing fun of thir customers. When the xbox360 came out, Sony was all over them, slaggig them off for the lack backwards compatiblity NOW, they are dropping it! Why are Sony taking the p**s like? I sware that I will NEVER purchase a PS3...it to big and bulky for a start and there are still no good games for it. The PS2 had loads and had some fun games for the whole family. Sony hve p**sed on their chips wth this console!
Once again Sony is showing its complete contempt for the european market. Firstly we get short changed by not getting the same hardware based backwards compatibility for our six month delayed launch. But don't worry Sony say, "the PS3 will be 100% backward compatible eventually via Software emulation, which is better", then not even six months later they drop it altogether. So when you consider the crapness of the Euro PSN (certainley compared to the wealth of titles in the US), the lack of BC, the over pricing and the lack of a single AAA title, is it any wonder that Sony are coming in for this amount of flack. And yes, I do have a PS3, a 360 and a Wii, so no fanboy digs, just saying it as I see it.

you can play panzer dragoon orta on your 360!? mine won't work past the fmv just after the 3rd level.
Hands up all those who played PS1 games on their PS2.
i'm one, over the years i've built up a sweet FF collection and found the texture smoothing and increased disc speed options on the ps2 were welcome features (i swear FFIX was made with these options in mind) now it's modded to play imports ( yup, that means chrono trigger too) and i still play ps1 games now. for example i've recently come by the american FFVII and can't believe the difference between the pal and ntsc versions. anyway, sometimes the old ones are the best. as for the wii, fully backwards compatible and metroid and mario galaxy in the next six weeks? i'm glad i held on to mine,my patience is about to be rewarded.

But that's you, you sound like a real gamer who's got his head straight about what's going on with particular situations like this one. You make a fair point Wii does seem like a 'party machine', but i doubt those same 45 year old mums won't want to jump from partying to serious gaming. Then again that must be why those same Mums would only take the time to play simple games like those. I guess that's why Wii wasn't properly in this conversation because they're not aiming at the same market as the big boys Microsoft and Sony??
Btw i put my hand up, the Rayman 1 and 2 would always be played on my PS2.../already is always played on it. Don't people get nostalgic about the good times with old games and want to play it one more time?
Sony are really throwing down serious cards with their current moves, will they prevail in the end
...with a library submerged in a deluge of mini-games and non-games...
I now have a GBA, debating whether to buy a 360 or PS3 confident I won't feel like I had been tricked when I do make my purchase.
seriously? you really still thing the wii is going to be a fad, even after its been proven to be the fastest selling console, and has the most hardware sold through in the entire planet? Even though the Wii version of Resident Evil 4 sales surpassed the GC and PS2 versions combined? You're going to have to convince me of how this is more than your own opinion. Especially in a time frame where the three best FPS games of the year thus far are said to be Halo 3, Bioshock and Metroid Prime 3. We al know how Nintendo never really rocked FPS well, and for MP3 to be said in the same sentence of best FPS games for 2007 as Halo 3, that speaks tomes.
Yet, it is neither here or there. The people I feel worst for were those devs who cranked tons of money in tho making PS3 titles and wil not make that money back in sales. I can see a lot of devs needing to regroup from those losses. I feel especially bad for the guys at Factor5, who made Lair. I met one of the leads personally, and the amount of work they busted their butts to make that game good, and with so little back in return by the reviews and sales, that's just terrible.
Oh, and for those of you who are worried that MS has no competition, the do see Nintendo as a challenger to their console. they want the XB360 to be the best console, obviously, and as far as the sales numbers go, they aren't. So they still know they have a battle to fight, especially since their console is unsurprisingly tanking in Japan.
Sorry Sony, I have no intention of owning two of your consoles simultaneously.
you can play panzer dragoon orta on your 360!? mine won't work past the fmv just after the 3rd level.
Yeah I had that problem as well. Haven’t Microsoft sorted that out yet!!?? There are still some games that I need to plug the old XBox in to play
Playstation 3 BC is actually pretty good right now. I have a large collection PS2 and 1 games and most of them play without problems or with the odd graphical glitch. To drop it so suddenly would be a shame.
From a business point of view I can understand them wanting to strip the console down to what Sony execs say is the bare minimum in order to get the console out for a cheaper price (which is the biggest turnoff for potential buyers right at the moment) but really how much does backwards compatibility cost them per console?
Personally, backwards compatibility is very important to me. Since getting my PS3 I've actually gone ahead and put in the time required to complete Final Fantasy VII and stocked up on Final Fantasy X, XII, Metal Gear 1, ICO, Canis Canem Edit, Beyond Good & Evil and a few others. All games I missed first time round.
And when games such as Resident Evil 5 come out it will be perfect for me to go back and try the previous games out which I also have never completed. One of the great things about the Halo 3 release was being able to go back to the first two games and playing through them again after leaving them for a while. Even now I've gone back and bought Jade Empire, which I never played the first time and am glad I did.
The fact that Sony are now downscaling the PS3 permanently and getting rid of backwards compatibility as well is awful as far as I’m concerned. I was really looking forward to some of the great looking games coming out in the future, but Sony making this decision makes me wonder what else they might try down the line. Whereas before my problem was deciding what games to buy during Nov/Dec, now I’ve got to decide if I even want to keep my console!
Microsoft updating BC as late on as E3 this year shows me that they have a decent idea of what gamers want, so I’m definitely leaning towards them for the time being.

It is absolutely just my opinion - and like I said, if Nintendo pull it off then fair play to them. They found a way of selling sand to the egyptians.
Metroid Prime 3 is a rare example of a good game on the Wii, there are others, mostly Nintendo creations. But Nintendo have always suffered from having a strong first party line up and a poor third party line up.
At the moment, the third party line up is mainly mini-games and little more. This could change, but surely the difference in power between the Wii and PS3/360 means developers are gona have to have seperate teams working on completely seperate versions of games.
If the difference in games becomes as wide as they were between ps1 and ps2 versions (for instance the thps4 games on ps1 with tiny levels and thps4 on ps2 with levels 5/10 times the size) then surely people will start to look at the more advanced versions and trade in, especially ith games that the wiimote doesn't lend itself to.
At the moment, I think the novelty of the Wii is driving sales, but three years down the line, the Wii graphics will be 10 years old, and I think will start to look tired.
I know all the sales figures, but I genuinly think that people can't continue to be so stupid for so long. Maybe I have too much faith in the general public, but of course this is just my opinion... and only time will tell.
I will either be saying 'I told you so', or be congratulating Nintendo for selling the same machine two generations in a row, but the second time around understanding and expanding their target audience.
Sony even released a memory card adaptor to port PS2 saves onto PS3, that alone makes me think they haven't really thought this through.
Out of the big three, Sony are easily the worst for customer satisfaction, I'd bet my life on it! They knock close to £100 for their 60gb PS3 a mere six months after its release and hereby annoying the early adopters. They take out the chip that allows full backwards compatibility for Europeans early, promising that in time, software updates will do the job just as well. And then they do a u-turn and abandon BC altogether! The lying bastards! You know, if someone offered me close to what I've paid for all my PS3 merchandise, I'd take their hand off. I've simply had enough of being treat like an bottomhole by some s**thouse of a company that has no idea how to treat its customers.
I mean, geez, they haven't even made Manhunt compatible yet...

But that's you, you sound like a real gamer who's got his head straight about what's going on...
Really!? Sounds like an over opinionated, first class c**t to me. From what I gather, this guy has none of the next gen consoles, just a Gameboy!... & yet proceeds to enlighten us on what proper gaming is. He then goes on to say what's hardcore & what's casual & who will be selling consoles in 5 yrs time. I say you're not qualified to judge!
I've been gaming for approx 18 yrs & have seen a lot of hardware come & go as have I seen a lot of fanboy bilge spoken. Hardcore isn't determined by what games you play you plank! Hardcore is the way you play your games. Choosing to play games that involve swearing or violence doesn't make you a hardcore gamer.(if you're intentionally choosing these games to be "hardcore" then it prob makes you quite the opposite.) Playing through a game with only a single life or putting the difficulty on the hardest setting on your first time playing... THIS is hardcore. Hardcore is a measure of skill & devotion, a measure of ability that can only be earnt through long periods of play. A casual player might not play from one week to the next. (they play casually.)
You might think you're a Hardcore gamer because you play this game or you play that game but I tell you this... There's a lot of hardcore players out there with Wii's & a game of Wii Sports Golf against someone like me would leave you feeling like the pathetic casual gamer that you are with a defesit of 13 under par.
Ha, wow, 18 whole years - you must be very proud! But before we get into bragging about whose first console predates whose, as it happens, I had a 360 from release date until the Wii was released at which point I traded it in for the Wii. Something I majorly regret for the reasons I have given.
The only 'next'-gen console I haven't owned yet is the PS3, because I don't want to make the same mistake I made with the 360 and get it before there are any games on the market.
The problem you have, is that you have read everything I have written, and proceeded to argue about M-rated games and what makes one hardcore.
(Also, I don't like the word hardcore, when referring to gaming, which is why I you’ll note that I avoid using the term.)
In fact, I am commenting on target audiences, the fact that the a large percentage of Wii consoles have been sold to Nintendo's new audience, gamers who do not read gaming publications, do not visit game stores other than to pick up a game they have seen advertised in their non-gaming magazines, non-gaming TV channels etc..
I think that while Nintendo have done a great job selling to this audience, these are the people who don’t buy games in significant numbers and, I believe, will stop using it after a short while after the novelty has worn off.
Plus, ironically, you seem to insinuate that because I have a GBA, that somehow makes me the casual gamer that doesn’t play from one week to the next. So if you don’t own a current console you are in no position to comment, is that right?
Why not add how long you’ve played games for, how many hours a week you play and how many consoles you own to your signature? That way you don’t have to begin every misdirected argument with the same old redundant and largely irrelevant crap.
Oh and just to make me a proper 'c**t' : it's 'deficit'.
Well, Sony have given me one final reason not to buy a PS3. It's obvious to me now that Sony really don't have a clue, as they stumble from one PR disaster to the next. excuse me sir..methinks you wandered into the wrong room... such blatent first time comments are somewhat poor sir... it is within ones inclination that one had no intentions of purchasing this sony product, yet, you try to lambast it with negative remarks... IF you wish to play with the said games, you had better get the 60 gig model (and at ?350 with excess is very cheap) im sorry sir, but i am going to have to confiscate the lighter and fluid...
surprising move considering there previous stance on this, very surprising!
BC is a good feature to have, but is rarely used as far as im concerned. out of all the ps3 owners i know, they only ps2 game any of them still play seems to be pro evo 6!
This thread has been filled with constructive comments and opinions and yours has just soiled that flow.
Believe me I loved my 360 when it worked but the case in hand is this.
After 2 Xbox Failures of my own and one of a friends not to mention a nephews own Red Ring hell. Now I feel lucky to have a working console, So reading comments in a thread literally bursting at the seams with obnoxious Sony hate fetishists like yourself.
Well, fanboyism aside you must be having a bad day.
Warhawk is a brilliant game. It's the most addictive online shooter I ever encountered, It's balance and feel is nothing short of genius. Resistance Fall of Man has a great Campaign mode and stellar online. Flow is a beautiful and relaxing play, as is Stardust HD and Nucleus. That's Just few of the unique games that represent a resounding upward trend towards success. For what is considered by many here, a console with no original content.
As for this new slimed down model. well, it's a shame Sony have removed some of the features that made it such a complete package, but needs must in this increasingly competitive market.
What they should have done is Just dropped the 80Gb model on Europe at a lower price point, all features intact.
Now i'm off to watch Casino Royale in my PS3's (built in) Blu-Ray
It is absolutely just my opinion - and like I said, if Nintendo pull it off then fair play to them. They found a way of selling sand to the egyptians.
Isnt that the case with all games? C'mon how much more can they milk out of the GTA series? Unfortunately, all games fit this pattern. Even Halo 3 is said by diehard halo fans to be "halo 2 with better graphics, but its a lot alike". there's nothing new or old under the sun. Is giving me more polys and shaders really that different from giving me a different input method, when it all boils down? Thats like having 2 of your egyptian merchants, one selling hot sand, one selling cool sand.

couldnt agree more. this is actually a big reason for the Resident Evil 5 delay for PS3/XB360...Capcom wanted to focus on getting Umbrella Chronicles for Wii out on the heels of the new zapper release
If the difference in games becomes as wide as they were between ps1 and ps2 versions (for instance the thps4 games on ps1 with tiny levels and thps4 on ps2 with levels 5/10 times the size) then surely people will start to look at the more advanced versions and trade in, especially with games that the wiimote doesn't lend itself to.

you may be right, you may not. I cant see the future, but what I do see is people playing MMOs that have been out since 2003 and even though ones with better graphics have come out, they are content where they are, because they're having fun. Id also give up the saying that the Wii graphics are outdated or last gen, because we both know the Wii's tech specs are above that of the original XB, and that 80% of the graphics done on XB360 can be redesigned within engine tools to be software driven as opposed to hardware. With the right engine built for the Wii, you'll see a much smaller difference in graphics. Keep in mind that people still happily buy PS2 games, 7-8 years since its launch.
I know all the sales figures, but I genuinly think that people can't continue to be so stupid for so long. Maybe I have too much faith in the general public, but of course this is just my opinion... and only time will tell.
you dont watch the news much, do you? THis planet is full of stupid people. The only way to overcome it is to take advantage of their stupidity =)
I will either be saying 'I told you so', or be congratulating Nintendo for selling the same machine two generations in a row, but the second time around understanding and expanding their target audience.
and thats what disappoints me, the fact that you can make such valid points, and then go to the opposite spectrum, and call the Wii and the GC the same system, when I know you are aware of its tech specs. you can rise above the gamespot fanboy references, I see that potential.
At the end of the day, we all play what we want to play on the systems we like. There's not really a reason to hate on other systems, it doesn't affect what you play regardless, ya know?
I think from an overall perspective, each system brings something cool to the table, and I have no doubt that the PS3 would have stomped the competition if it wasnt for the BluRay technology bumping the price so high. Sony knows what they need to do, release a non-bluray PS3, sell it for 250-300, and they WILL recover. They need to swallow their pride on their Bluray tech first, if it will happen remains yet to be seen.
I would be upset with Sony about this, except for two small details:
1) I have no intention of buying a PS3 anytime soon. Good luck to everyone who does buy one at the moment, I'll join you when the games are there and Sony puts the BC back in. Don't hold you breath, it's gonna be a long, long time. (PSThree, anyone?)
2) I read an article a couple of weeks back which broke down exactly how much it cost Sony to make each PS3. HA HA HA HA HA HA HURDY HURDY HO HO HAW *cough* HA!
How could anybody think badly of Sony, when the biggest victims of the PS3 are Sony themselves? I'd like to congratulate them for taking their screw-up like a man, and for soldiering on regardless.
Be brave, Sony, be brave. I'm sure that some noble third-party developer will bail you out at some point in the future, by making a truly great game, and then suicidally turning down the lucrative established X360 user base. There must be a developer out there somewhere that cares more for brand loyalty than for filthy great wads of real money... Maybe.
I have a problem with the current game consoles. That is that there is no innovation anyway. Why even bother.
When will console gamers finally figure out that the silly controllers present only awkward control for first person games? The first person games are awful with the kiddy controllers.
The adult gamers know that the mouse is the only way to emulate real "aiming" practically. We adults are also tired of paying $3000 for a new computer to play the innovative games. Until the masses realize what we veteran gamers already know then you might as well stick with the PS2... as it's all already been done. Whoopdee-doo if a new third person adventure game or football game for PS3 has shadows and normal mapping...
...you seem to insinuate that because I have a GBA, that somehow makes me the casual gamer that doesn’t play from one week to the next...
Nope, never said that. Hardcore amounts to skill. Said that already. I simply said that seeing as you don't have one of the current consoles then you forfit your right to judge them.
I see you as a casual gamer due to your casual/hardcore views. Nothing to do with the GBA.
Want to reply? Don't worry, I'm sure there's some spelling mistakes you can pick me up on. They might warrant a new post.
PS.Bad grammar doesn't make me c**t, your views do!
My views make you a c**t? Brilliant!
Seriously though, I was hoping, this time, for a relevant response. But instead you have picked up on one point of my post - my response to you ridiculing my owning a gameboy and then once again defended your views on 'hardcore' gaming - something which I never talked about in the first place!
Also, I didn't say you were a c**t, you said I was, so I was merely reaffirming your view.
Anyway, considering your brief post, I assume this means you realised that your last rant about how many games you have completed had absolutely nothing to do with any of the points I made.
Plus, I think your views on 'hardcore' gaming are rather narrow - I agree with the 'mastering a game' points, but I think you also need a knowledge, or devotion to gaming: for instance, an interest in gaming publications, industry publications etc...
Though like I said, I don't like the term, it always reminds me of '1337'-isms.
They found a way of selling sand to the egyptians.
Isnt that the case with all games?
I think to a degree you are right - other than the standard improvements of improved AI, larger playing areas etc... but I think it's the first time this has been done with hardware.
At the moment, I think the novelty of the Wii is driving sales, but three years down the line, the Wii graphics will be 10 years old, and I think will start to look tired.
you may be right, you may not. I cant see the future, but what I do see is people playing MMOs that have been out since 2003 and even though ones with better graphics have come out, they are content where they are, because they're having fun.
The MMO reference is a good point, but the PC and console markets are different - when there is such a stark difference between the graphics, straight out of the box, it could sway people in a couple of years time.
Ha, yes, good point, well made.
Well the similarities between the 'next-gen' hardware and 'previous-gen' hardware has to be greater than any other consoles ever - or at least in the last 15 years..
On top of that, if devs realise that people expect sub-standard graphics, there is nothing to push them to push the machine.
At the end of the day, we all play what we want to play on the systems we like. There's not really a reason to hate on other systems, it doesn't affect what you play regardless, ya know?
It's true, but I have gripes with each console, and the gripes are what make it difficult to choose between the two.
I want a BluRay player for my HDTV (PS3), but I want the best variety of games available (360) and despite my feelings about the Wii, I want to play Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy.
Yet, a) I don't want to have 3 consoles under my TV and b) I have other things to spend my money on!
Sony knows what they need to do, release a non-bluray PS3, sell it for 250-300, and they WILL recover. They need to swallow their pride on their Bluray tech first, if it will happen remains yet to be seen.
Again, this is true, but they don't want BluRay to go the same way as BetaMax or MiniDisc and obviously feel they can't afford not to force it into people's homes.
I want a BluRay, but a hell of a lot of people don't, and a surprising amount of people don't even know it is in the PS3 at all, which probably makes the whole situation even more amusing.
This is a shame. What are the chances that your favourite BC games will appear on PSN in the near future? Will they charge for games you already own??
Even though the Wii version of Resident Evil 4 sales surpassed the GC and PS2 versions combined?
Yeah but, that can't have been too hard. The GC had practically collapsed by the time RE4 came out and the PS2 version was a complete mockery. By the time it came out on the Wii there were several million starved gamers waiting for something decent to be released on the machine. I bought it, and it remains the best game on the system and one of the sole reasons my Wii has stayed off ebay (along with Galaxy)
I feel especially bad for the guys at Factor5, who made Lair
Me too - game looks great running, just plays terribly. I made the mistake of importing it and I still really want to like it but playing it stops any of those emotions.
Oh, and for those of you who are worried that MS has no competition, the do see Nintendo as a challenger to their console. they want the XB360 to be the best console, obviously, and as far as the sales numbers go, they aren't.
Good point. Makes me laugh though that people say the Wii and 360 are for different markets, but then compare sales figures. 360 is doing well enough - imagine sales figures if the japanese weren't so anal about uptake of foreign products.
The problem I have with this is that they are still making ps2 games, that if you had a ps3 could possibly play on. I have been thinking of picking up Rogue galaxy but not really sure if I should bother because when the time comes for me to buy a ps3 its not gonna bloody work. I think this is a very poor move from sony and find the hypocritical that they blasted MS for having poor BC only for them to turn round and kill it off completely...
BC is fairly important, I still play Xbox1 games on my 360. Sure they don't look jaw-dropping any more but are you telling me that jet Set Radio Future is no longer good because it deosn't look the best any more.
Heck I still play Sega Rally 1 on the Saturn, looks poor when compared to the latest but take that car for a spin and you have no choice but to appreciate the power sliding and the perfect balance that they did with that game.
In a time when retro gaming is bigger than ever removing BC is a mistake and they will hear lots of complaints about this. Not that they will do anything anyway.
Sure there will be some PS3s out there that have never had a PS1 and PS2 disc shoved into them but there are many that have older titles in their drives right now. Remember different people like different things.
On the BC note - when I had a 360, i stuck medal of honour... one of them, the one with the pearl harbour level.. anyway, aside from being a bit jerky, it was was about 2/3rds the size of the screen with chunky borders on all four sides...
..is this standard with 360 emulation, or was it just a bad game lacking 100% compatibility? anyone know?
whats the point in them doing this? i wasnt planning on getting a ps3 till they dropped in price i already have a wii and xbox 360 premium purely for the fact i can put the old consoles in the attic and play my fav games on the new consoles, recently i got rogue galaxy havent got around to playing it yet cos ive been playing 2 worlds, forza 2, super paper mario and the new settlers game it probably wont touch my ps2 for a while i know yea i can still play it but i dont want to have to go into the attic to play one of my 60+ ps2 games and dont really have the space for another console in my bedroom, had to put all my games in CD wallets and dump the boxes in the attic already this just isnt a good thing for me and i dont have the money to get a 60gb PS3 yet and probably wont till feb will they still be around then or will i have to battle it out with countless others to get mine on ebay and pay over the odds for it? i might just not bother getting a PS3 now because of this sorry sony but from this day forth i am a xbox fanboy, you bunch of cost cutting time saving pieces of moldy toast that you have half eaten before you see blue!!!!!
So, for example, i have to keep my Ps2 for games like Guitar Hero 1 & 2 because i can't play them on my Ps3. Thanks alot Sony. You Feckers. Not gonna buy any more Ps2 games from now on then.
Probably just badly done for that title. I've been playing KOTOR on my 360 recently and it runs fine on the full screen.
OK, it's a bit jerky in places, but I'd put that down to it being a second-hand copy that's scratched to buggery...

nope, that's standard for KOTOR. my copy is pristine and still jerks like a 13 year old with a fresh box of kleenex,it goes out of sync too. panzer dragoon orta stops working after 3 levels, half life 2 dies at the title screen and even halo throws some strange ghost effects now and then. i wish they'd do it properly or just not bother. say what you like about sony's decision, microsofts bc support is pretty s**t as well.

you could always get 2nd hand ... or a yank 80gig ... in all fairness 'xbox fanboy' as you like to refer to yourself, would never be pleased with ANYTHING sony say or do... why not try to think outside of the 'x'box
For me, backwards compatability is essential. I have a fairly large selection of PS2 games and the PS2 console is sitting under my HDTV with a V+ box, a DVD recorder, an audio receiver and (yes) a Wii. I don't want to have a PS2 and a PS3 box under the TV at the same time (and nor does my wife!!!). When I bought the PS2, BC with psone wasn't so important - I never owned a PS1 and the only PS1 game I bought was MGS. But now, if the PS3 isn't backwards compatable with my PS2 games, why should I stick to Sony? For the first time, I've been thinking - why not get the XBox? Or why not just keep my cash for now? Sony don't instill you with confidence when they promote their shiny new box as being BC with old games and then you find out they want to drop this feature... and just for us Europeans as well. And please don't remind me that the PS3 can play PS1 games - I traded in my old copy of MGS once I had squeezed every last bit out of it. One thing is for sure - this household won't have a PS3 for Christmas 2007.
