Microsoft creating Home rival?

"By next year" you'll know, hints Microsoft E&D boss Daniel Schiappa
According to reports, Microsoft E&D GM Daniel Schiappa has hinted that a PlayStation Home-like virtual world will be coming to Xbox 360 within the next year.

According to Team Xbox, the Entertainment and Devices boss turned up on stage at the Virtual Worlds Conference And Expo in San Jose and stated: "...by next year, you'll probably know more about why I'm up here." Oo-eer.

Speaking to CVG earlier this year, fellow Microsoft suit Chris Satchell said that Sony's Home incorporated a lot of ideas that Xbox 360 originated, perhaps suggesting that its own MMO-style virtual world wouldn't be too much of a departure.

"I think they've definitely taken some concepts that we originated like achievements, but I think they're pushing in a different direction and we've sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here," he said.

"It's a cool world but it's like a little game by itself. Our approach is the other way around; it's that games are the center and that's the star of the show, that's what people buy the console for."

Of course there'll be a Microsoft version of Home... It's how the industry evolves. If each company didn't take the others' ideas and run with them we wouldn't have stuff like rumble and hard drives as standard.

All sounds very interesting. As a UK xbox360 owner all I want to see is the HI-DEF content area in dashboard, a web browser and the ability to open video chat on top of any existing game...

Meh.

A lot of people seem to have it in for MS but as far Live goes, the service is unrivalled. Yeah, i know i pay Ł40 a year for the privelidge but in the grand scheme of things with IPTV coming soon Live will only get stronger.

Personally, im not a fan of Home it looks good but its just not for me. Dont go down that route MS. Please.
StonecoldMC on 15 Oct '07
I think we could do without something similar.

I agree. If you do go down this route please at least let those of us not interested use the simple blade & menu system. Got better things to do with my time than p**s about with home style interface

Not something I'd be even remotely interested in to be honest, I think all the functionality I want is already there.

I do like the competitive aspect of achievements, gamerscore and so on - certainly a lot more than I thought I would - but I really don't spend that long gloating over my achievements (just the occasional check to make sure I'm still beating Bosker is enough Wink ) and the idea of a whole virtual world being created (so it would appear) largely for that purpose seems a bit excessive/sad really.
cjw101 on 15 Oct '07
I sure as hell hope it's optional.
I couldn't care less about social networking (I have MySpace and Facebook accounts, but only to promote my band), and when I want to load a game I want to do it as fast as possible. With XBL that's 3 joypad pushes and a click away. I don't want to have to look around, find the game and walk over to it to load it.
Dajmin on 15 Oct '07
OOOOh never seen that one coming.....MUCH!
wudragon on 15 Oct '07
I personally hope that don't copy Home. I think it's a lame idea and a waste of time.
It's like those 3D chat programs you have. Who uses them over MSN?
All i want is the HD movie and show downloads, clan support, multiple people in private chat and the MSN intergration improved.

Don't MMOs also fall within the designation of "Virtual Worlds" Question I think CVG has been jumping to conclusions, just going by the quote.

Inevitable really, like it or lump it a lot of people will buy a ps3 over a 360 because of the free home bolstered online service.

Who? No one buys a Wii because you can browse the Internet on it. Everyone I know is a big gamer and not one of them have considered a PS3 for its online service. Anyone that thinks 'online console gaming' will immediately think of the 360. Thats one thing MS has tried really hard to create.

One day, Crispy... one day... you're bottom will be mine.. uh, oh Shocked , metaphorically speaking only. Apologies Razz

As for "hint"... um, didn't we have some kind of "Wii motion control, only better.." just before the summer?

Not convinced myself, but if they did create some virtual Facebook then "feh"... not interested.

I still can't see Home working, there's just too many things that could go wrong. If it does show up tho', I'm sure it'll be cut right back from it's original design.

Just to clarify. A lot ie: hundreds of thousands if not a million or two console buyers will look at both systems weigh up the options and will want some of home. I don't know what microsoft are planning but the fact is that home will sell a lot of systems even at Ł300. Of course it's true to say that microsoft have a superior online gaming service but without their own version of home some console buyers will opt for a ps3 just as some console buyers have opted for a 360 based on the excellent online gaming service.

nooooooooooooooooo dont copy sony let them rip off second life and ms keep the blade system, i pay 30 quid for a years service cause its easy to use i dont want to have to choose what bloody clothes my avatar is wearing just to play games that kind of thing is for sad losers without a social life(s**t im a dad i have no social life anyway Confused )

Maybe, but what you aren't taking into account is how much people (other than gamers like ourselves) know about the consoles. Would a casual gamer know about Home? If I was taking about computer games at work, for example, no one would know what Home is. They would know what the Wii is though. The Wii is a friendly device whilst the PS3 is a 'multi-media home entertainment unit'. Which is surely enough to scare the punter who likes their Wii. Of course there is the obvious difference between the two but my point is is that Home is currently something only gamers are aware of. It means nothing to anyone else. Infact, gamers are generally a little worried about Home and home much influence it will have. I want to plug-in-and-play. Not pi$$ about. It'd be like Myspace invading in Team Slayer. Unacceptable. As for the millions of people who may buy one, I'm sure the online service would be of their least concern. Brand name of the software and hardware would be much more of a deciding factor.
I'd be surprised if Sony keep the online service forever free. More than likely a Gold/Silver-esqe service will come into play with Home. It'd be nice for the gamer if it didn't, but cutting corners effects something somewhere. Like batteries, I'd rather buy full price for batteries than risk a 99p package. Crap comparision, but it'll do.

Anyway you cheap b@stards, you talk about 'next-gen' Cell processors and then aren't willing to cough up forty-ruddy-pound a year to allow Sony to help you get as much as possible from your online experience! Whats that? A month of your average mobile phone contract? Are you all still on pocket money or something? Give Sony some money considering the fact they paid half of the price of your console for you!

No. I don't want the internet through a console. Any chance of the slim-est chance of a no chance of a virus in my console = NO.

I think the whole home-esque environment is aimed more at girls than guys (girls love social networking waaaay more than guy do. Could be wrong tho) it seems very sims-ish and that was one of the most popular games with women. Im guessing that MS and sony are both thinking about the female influence factor. How many times have you been influenced to buy or not buy something by your significant other? I know i have on occasion... not that im whipped or anything Rolling Eyes "Manly Grrrrrr"

tekken sony have ripped of second life with home all big companies do it these days you should do your research before you start ranting
dangermou5e on 15 Oct '07
Tekken._.PS3 please f**k off back to your fanboy forums, your opinion isn't wanted here.
Anyway...
Hmmmm, this is an interesting one. It's fairly obvious why sony are making home: the majority of those that buy PS3s are hardcore gamers who have done their research and fanboys, home is an attempt to reach all the girls out there that like dress up and the sims. I personally dont really fancy myself playing halo 3 with the kind of people that bought their console so they can play the sims Confused
The 360 already has a fairly varied fan base as far as consoles go. I think all this business with 'family games' has gone way too far. It's pointless trying to convince people that 'your grandma will love this new virtual knitting game' because your grandma doesnt know how to turn a wii on. And i can't see many girls i know running off to spend Ł300 to play the sims when they can get an almost identical free version on the internet already.
Eyhren on 15 Oct '07
Dont do it Microsoft. Home is a lame idea built to sell branded clothing and other virtual crap for your virtual minions. Its utterly pointless and will fail in the long term. I own both a PS3 and a 360 and the thought of having the same pointless virtual world on both machines makes my skin shudder. If you want to take part in a virtual world, buy World of Warcraft or The Sims. At least there will be some point and enjoyment playing them.

Ask yourself, why on earth would you want to walk your virtual me to all the different rooms and buildings just to watch some videos and download demos. What if you have to wait for these things to load along with all your virtual crap as well. Home is an awful idea and Microsoft will be taking a huge step backwards if they copy it. THEY DONT NEED TO. They are doing well enough without copying s**t ideas.
ShadowDawn1881 on 15 Oct '07
Bottom line = If Bill & his cronies have their eyes on a new and advanced "home" like rival, you know it's gonna rule... who cares if it copies and supercedes what the opposition does, our Eastern xenophobic neighbours have made an industry out of it!
Tonyb on 15 Oct '07
Who cares? The thing is free anyway and totally optional. You don't have to go through home to play your games, just do it the good 'ol fashioned way.

I'll give it go and see how the thing plays out once it's eventually released sometime around 2010. It has some neat little ideas but sadly it will probably just end up as an advertisers playground.

MS will probably be working on something like this internally already but will wait and see how things work out with Home. If it flops they'll issue a comment to say 'I told you so' or some such crap and it will never see the light of day, and if it's a success they'll release it, probably charge you extra for the privilege (it is Microsoft after all) and still give you the usual crap.
potnoodle1 on 15 Oct '07
I just had a thought. If microsoft announce a home competitor then you can kiss the idea of a new xbox in a couple of years bye bye.
starvinbull on 16 Oct '07

The shock, the horror. $ony have been ripping off other peoples ideas for years. Time to change them sony branded blinkers that you're wearing. Sony aren't the innocent company that you believe them to be.
roynluc on 16 Oct '07
Let's use his name for instance. Tekken (94) was just Virtua Fighter (93) with better graphics Smile

I don't know why MS would suddenly change Live since it's already got millions of subscribers and has been going strong for 18 months now. Seems like a waste of time better spent on developing useful ideas.
