In September the Xbox 360 finally outsold the world-dominating Nintendo Wii in North America... and it's all thanks to Halo 3.
According to figures released by the NPD Group, Bungie's shooter drove sales of the Xbox 360 console to over 528,000 units, besting the cheaper Wii's 501,000 units flogged for the month of September.
You could of course argue that the Wii had bugger all games released for it last month, and still scraped the bottom of Microsoft's numbers, but then we'd be being very cynical, wouldn't we?
The Chief's latest broke all box office records by making $170 million on its first day. It's now gone on to sell well over $300 million.
Nintendo took second and third place with 282,000 copies of Wii Playand 224,000 copies of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass sold in the US.
Just goes to show people prefer boring FPS's than great adventure games, but Wii Play comes with the Wii remotes anyway so that don't really count, I have a choice now Halo 3 or Phantom Hour Glass....Hmmm well thats easy Phantom Hour Glass Hands down!!!

Well that's the thing, the Wii has had bugger all games since release and has been thrashing its rivals just about every month. Logically, assuming that sales leap when these big hitters are released, when Mario Galaxy is released next month Wii sales should leap well over 360 ones, again.
Wow the majority of consumers buy a system to play fantastic games. I'm shocked, I thought all they cared about was gimmicky controls. Sales will be back to normal soon for the wii so dont worry nintendo fanboys. Thankfully next week I can finally play a great game on my euro-launchday wii(metroid), all I need now is to find my dustbuster.

Nintendos sales never dropped. Infact, they had their best month since the launch month, which is very very odd.
The article says 'The Chief's latest broke all box office records by making $170 million on its first day. It's now gone on to sell well over $300 million.'
How impressive the the term 'box office records' seems to sound even when, as in this case, the term has no place. Box office sales refers to TICKET sales for a theatre or cinema showing. It does not refer to buying a videogame (or a DVD) where, instead of watching a show with many other people, you are given a lasting product that you generally use in the privacy of your own home.
Perhaps the fact that a few cinemas put Halo 3 up on the big screen has confused the writer. Whatever the case, you can be sure that the relatively small number of people who went to those cinema showings of Halo 3 didn't break any box office records for the cinema, unless it's for showings of a videogame in a cinema (not including films based on videogames), for which Halo 3 has about no competitors as yet.

Yeah, you tell them, how dare they use someone elses term without getting your permission first!!!
I wonder how many of them are replacements for bricked consoles. E.g. people in so much of a rush to play halo 3 went and got their bricked consoles replaced at the store on warranty rather than waiting weeks for microsoft to repair it.
I still find it incredible that the Wii is selling such a huge volume of systems each month. Let's face it the catalogue of games is poor! When I purchaced my HD TV I spent hours checking on specs and critics reviews to finally make a decision. If I had done the same whilst buying a console I would have steered well clear of the Wii until the AAA title games were available. No offence but barring Wii sports and Zelda there's very little to drag me back to a Wii remote right now! Thank god for the VC eh!
I think you guys are forgetting to take in the fact that that while the Xbox 360 is widely available everywhere, the Wii still isn't. Even if the Wii did launch a killer title(s), it would still sell the same amount due to the lack of availability until Nintendo decides to ramp up production of Wiis.
Surprise! Has anybody been to Best Buy and seen just how many "Halo 3" edition 360's they have lining the walls? There must be at least 150 of them sitting around in every store (like the PS3). Even if just 10 percent of those green bricks sold I'm sure the sales figures would be greater than the Wii's.
I do think the Wiimote is a bit of a gimmick though. Like the others, Nintendo is famous for unused hardware; half of the Game Cube was empty space used for peripherals that were never made. And the Donkey Konga bongos. I love that game, but I doubt that was considered a system seller.
Boring FPS's?... sigh.
Some of you Nintendo fanboys are starting to sound like Sony fanboys... getting all jealous when the 360 has a succesful moment (and a bloody well deserved one too- Halo 3 kicks Links silly elf bottom - ahem, sorry).
Prefer adventure games do ya?- that's great. I've played Twilight Princess and completed it now... it was ok, but totally forgettable... and I got several hours into Wind Waker and was bored to death... and I too like adventure games... hell, I like loadsa different games, why, Final Fantasy 7 used to be my favourite game of all time (until Halo 3 stomped on it- or maybe when Advent Children came out it tarnished 7 for all eternity with it's rubbishness), I'd happily give Phantom Hourglass a whirl if I had a DS... but I don't... so I won't. And I can't say I'm overly fussed about that either.
Now excuse me, even mentioning Advent Children has made me feel angry... and I've had a horrible day. Killing some Covenant should make it better...
Microsoft are onto a winner, now all they need to do is release a new halo game every month.
I had three xbox 360's returned today in work (good numbers compared to last Saturday), there's another three 'sales' Microsoft can add to their total.
1. Was obvious this would happen with the monster release of Halo 3. Half a million sales in one month is rather impressive. Wonder how they will fair in the Christmas period?
2. How on earth is the Wii selling so well when it has bugger all games released so far apart from Zelda: TP (GC port) and Metroid Prime 3? Its just an embarrassment to the industry...

But that's it, the '360's biggest moment, over. It will never have a bigger exclusive than Halo 3, so when the fuss dies down in a month or so, the '360 has shot it's bolt and it's all downhill.

Well I'm an XBox convert, and I still think Zelda is better than Halo. Just a glorified shooter... Its got a decent story, but I was expecting it to be an amazing three games when I picked them up - all I got was an alright single player game and one decent multiplayer match out of about 40. Sure I'll still play it now and again with friends, but it wasn't half what I was expecting...
Zelda on the other hand... Even WW I was happy with. I don't understand how people didn't like it.

Whereas with Nintendo, the big moments are generally Mario/Zelda/Metroid games... over and over and over. Fine if you have an italian plumber/elf in silly pyjamas/ Macho chick with a gun for an arm fetish(s). And fair play to you if you do.
And you forget that Mass Effect has every chance to usurp Halo 3 (Even in my books)... And then after that there are still tons of games for 360 owners to look forward to... in fact, what are you talking about? Flicking through my magazine here, there are absolutely tons of games in the next year that i'm interested in... and there are still more to be announced... Bloody doom monger.
I LIKE Nintendo, but i'm not INTO Nintendo. Zelda I can live without.

Until Gears of War 2 that is...
I know you meant say Ninja Gaiden 2 so I'll forgive you this one time. As for the retarded fanboys crying themselves stupid in this thread please go kill yourselves. Now. t**ts.

So what the hell happens when Nintendo have released Zelda: TP, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxies, Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii? Going by your logic that means the Wii's finished as early as March 2008...
The reality is that there's loads of great games to look forward to for all the console including 360 with the likes of Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden 2, Gears of War 2, Too Human, Alan Wake, Halo Wars, Banjo 3 and many more.

Good to see people buying 360's.Wii's at the mo are over rated.Where's the games? since April i've bought 16 360 games and only one on Wii.Movie tie in games dont thrill me much.
I have to say, I'm with those that say that Halo 3 is overrated. Its so last gen. Some guy said that Twilight Princess is forgetable. I'd say Halo 3 was more uneventful. Some good bits in it (like the all out war sections, Scorpions etc) but the rest is dull generic FPS. Its just Halo 2 with a lick of paint. I can't see how this is next gen at all. There's some good multiplayer options on it (and yes, filming the matches hasn't been done before) but after playing Gears of War again last night on Live, I'd vouch for the multiplayer on that.
After finishing Halo, I went straight back to Bioshock. Seem to prefer it a lot more and at least it looks the part.
People going on about how far the Wii has got on a lot of crap software, don't foget the PS2 was like that for its first year too...

Halo is a samey shooter, while the three games your talking about all have features which make the games a fresh experience, enhancing the model they are building upon.
Nintendo can easily trash the competition, all they have to do is release better advertising. I would rather they use their demonstraion of how to play the game (as they have done so far), rather than the crappy artistic pointlessness of the Halo 3 advert. If they release a low budget advert fo Super Mario Galaxy showing actual GAMEPLAY, the world will be enthralled.
I wonder how many of them are replacements for bricked consoles. E.g. people in so much of a rush to play halo 3 went and got their bricked consoles replaced at the store on warranty rather than waiting weeks for microsoft to repair it.

its correct halo 3 launch out sold all the top films of that month which included spiderman3 it also made more money then the final harry potter book on launch day thats what cvg is refering to

No offense but if Wii actually shows any gameplay of their proper games then it will do them more harm than good due to the graphical difference between Wii and the other two consoles. They are much better off sticking to people actually playing the game and having fun rather than trying to directly show the game off.
The headline makes it sound like the Wii was released first and the 360 was the new upcoming console and just overtook it.
As opposed to sales being boosted due to Microsoft finally releasing the only killer title they have. Dont get me wrong, they have some good games, but nothing that will be remembered like Halo, Mario and Metal Gear.
Holy crap, I nearly busted a gut on that one. Look at the top rated games of the year canidates lately? Bioshock, Halo 3, Halflife 2 and now Mass effect is loking like yet another game of the Year candidate?

Someone needs to point out to folks like you that HOLLYWOOD even blamed poor ticket sales on Halo 3. Comletely unrelated, huh?
I bought a 360 in that month, but I bought it for COD4 which i've had a boner for for months now (plus i got it for Ł200). Maybe now the orange box is out on a console people will see how boring halo really is.
I think the most interesting sales figures will be when GTA4 comes out as i think a lot of people are waiting for that. Who'll win out of 360 and ps3?

Got the Orange Box and while HL2 certainly stands the test of time, its no Halo beater. It is one hell of a game though and a great deal for anyone that missed out on the PC version.
As for GTA4, I think the fact that there are more than double the amount of 360's out there than PS3's and the fact the 360 has exclusive DL content will lead to the 360 version having superior sales. However, im sure by that time alot more PS3's will have been sold with Killzone 2 and MGS4 being released around that time. Will certainly be interesting. I think that period will make or break the PS3 in terms of if it can make a come back...

I was not saying it wasn't well deserved I was just merely stating that adventure games are better than FPS's and that I was dismayed that so many people like those games, that is why my 360 collects more dust than my Wii at the moment too many shooters!
And the fact that you like a shooter over the sheer majesty of The Legend of Zelda series makes you unworthy to speak to so bye bye!
I think the point ya'll are forgetting is that the 360 has been out for a year longer than the Wii, and yet it still sold more units than the Wii.(Lookup Saturation to understand why this is so impressive if you are still lost)
Also, I've heard the argument that while Halo 3 was the highest grossing media release in any medium in one day, it's price tag of 60+ vs 5-10 dollars for a movie makes it obvious that it should. What people forget is that a movie lasts 2 hours, while a video game can easily last 60+ hours, if not MORE for a game as epic as Halo 3.(But on the downside, less people will experience this great game than those that would see a movie)
And come on, Halo 3 is not the only great game(See: System Seller) to be released for the 360; Bioshock, Oblivion and The Orange Box(If your computer sucks or missed them on the PC), Rainbow Six:LV, Gears of War, Guitar Hero 2, PGR Series. What has Nintendo had? Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3; While i absolutely have to give props to TP, I havn't touched it since I beat it, and Metroid Prime 3 got me bored after the 2nd world or so(Scanning every goddamn thing just to do the obvious action is SO FREAKIN ANNOYING, no matter how "intuitive" the controller is).
Now add the fact that Microsoft is making a updated Core version(Dubbed "Arcade" to sell at $279, will the "casual" gamer be more inclined to shell out 20 more bucks for a arguably better system(Better games, better online, better hardware etc) or will he continue to buy the hot new system with the cool controllers and the lack of quality games(Released and Upcoming).
Now continue to add to this equation the upcoming games for each system. On Xbox 360: If you want adventure or RPG, you could go the path of Naruto, Mass Effect and Ninja Gaiden 2. Add hits like GTA4, Assasin's Creed, Devil May Cry 4, Call of Duty 4, Halo Wars(And any other hits I may have missed). On Wii: Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl(Which I personally think will outsell Super Mario Galaxy), and Wii Mario Kart. (Prob called SUPER Mario Kart Wii ).
IMO The games just don't justify buying the system, and it certainly doesn't make sense to not pay 20 bucks more for the 360 "Arcade".
Don't get me wrong, I love Nintendo to death, I was even a guy who supported the Cube above all else, but a single player game like Mario Sunshine(And the upcoming Mario Galaxy) and the Legend of Zelda series doesn't make for much replayability. I still hold Ocarina of Time as my favorite all time single player game, but that doesn't make me want to play it every day after I've beaten it, and it doesn't let me play with friends/enemies.
And don't be dissin the Halo story, it truly is epic in scope.
i have to agree with both sides here, im in my 30's so a 360 was more for me, plus the 360 has some cracking games at the mo, and coming up, i think mass effect is going to be huge!!! My son however who's 10 has a wii, the trouble is, only nintendo seem to be getting the most from the wii, ive sat there many hours with my son playing paper mario, and i have to say its brilliant!!! but i think nintendo seem to be pushing the old sensor remote more than other 3rd parties, most great games on any nintendo console, going right back back to the nes have been made by nintendo, same when sega were around on the console seen, microsoft and sony have a habbit of flashing there wallets and sticking there name on the box, as for sales figures etc, they all bend the figures, im on my 3rd 360, as is my brother, does that count as 2, or 6 for microsoft, figures dont bother me, its games that matter, i loved my dreamcast, it had great games, but due to cleaver marketing by sony sega sunk, even with the dreamcast being a superior console. people enjoy your games, no matter what console, as for the cosole wars, its us gamers that benefit at the end of the day.
I don't really care about Sales, all I know is I'm looking forward to COD4 for the 360 and Mario Galaxy for the Wii. Not really a Halo fan and even with the great reviews it has received I'm still avoiding it. I won't be online till Jan so Single player is what matters most to me.
At the end of the day I just want games to be released on all formats as it's the consumer that benefits. I want all 3 machines to be successful. With 3 machines next gen things will be more interesting rather than 2. It would be even worse if there was just one machine.
I just hope that the games I'm looking forward to on the Wii aren't delayed any more.
I wonder how many of them are replacements for bricked consoles. E.g. people in so much of a rush to play halo 3 went and got their bricked consoles replaced at the store on warranty rather than waiting weeks for microsoft to repair it.
That doesn't count as a "sale" surely.
Does because the replacement for said broken console is just another unit shifted off the shelves.
If the console's bricked then Microsoft replace it you dumbass, only idiots go out and buy a new console if their 360 gets RROD.
Seems that any kind of positive news or announcement of a good game on 360 is met with 100 jealous fanboys idiots saying "OMGZ YOU WILL GET TEH RROD, ROFLZ".
I must have missed the announcement where Mass Effect was confirmed for PC....
Seriously a large amount of console gamers have absoloutly no interest in PC gaming, so they're as good as 360 exclusives....well other than Halflife 2 which will be out on PS3 sometime.
Console exclusives if you must, but the fact is most people aren't prepared to shell out for a top spec PC rig when they can get a system for Ł300 that plays the game perfectly.

Woah, might want to hop down from your high horse there missy, didn't quite catch that big pile of crap you tried to drop on me there. Perhaps you can come round and preach to me on the error of my ways and the fact that I don't find the adventures of a (very feminine looking) elf all that enthralling. Sorry to be having an opinion of my own, may I go to hell and burn.
But what the hey, I'm not worthy of your attention- why would you waste time reading this when there are hearts in dungeons to be found? So I'll just say whatever the hell I like and we can agree to disagree.
