22-Oct-2007 Don't phone in, it's just for fun As tends to happen in the PC Gamer office, I found myself shouting out a factlet I'd discovered from the Electric Internet about a games developer.
There followed a series of "NO WAYS!", as if we were all essaying Bill and Ted or something. I then found another factlet about another game developer, shouted it out, and got another chorus of "NO WAYS!" and an order from Ross to make some kind of blog quiz for people to test their knowledge.
I said no, but he hit me until I complied. I don't like it when Ross hits me. I feed sad.
:( :( :(
Anyway! Here we go. See if you can tell the real facts from the stuff I just made up.
1) Deus Ex and Blacksite's Harvey Smith served in the Air Force in Saudi, though not actually during the first Gulf War.
2) Gear of War's Cliffy B once bowled out former England batsman Graham Thorpe in a charity cricket event.
3) Sims creator Will Wright once won an illegal coast-to-coast car race.
4) Peter Molyneux was born with an extra toe on both feet.
5) Sims creator Will Wright plays the tuba.
6) Lord British is the only private citizen to own property on the moon.
7) Paris Hilton has Sims creator Will Wright's phone number.
8) Sims creator Will Wright made competitive battling robots with his son.
9) Id's John Carmack had his cat killed because it was having a negative effect on his life.
10) Sims creator Will Wright's sister saves horses.
SCROLL DOWN FOR ANSWERS!
1) True. He was in the Air Force, stationed in Gemany and Saudi doing something clever with satellites.
2) False. At least, as far as we're aware.
3) True. He and his co-driver won the US Express in 1980, the successor race to the famous Cannonball run. They did it in 33 hours and 9 minutes. Will Wright is Awesome.
4) False. Unless anyone has something they care to reveal.
5) Maybe. Wikipedia claims it, but it doesn't give a source and we can't find one. I do play the tuba, however, though no longer own one.
6) True. He bought a Russian moon rover. It's still on the moon, but it's his.
7) False. Or, at least, as far as anyone other than Will and Paris knows. When Paris' phone was hacked and the numbers were leaked online, there was some speculation about it, but the Will Wright in question was someone else entirely.
8) False. He made them with his daughter in the US equivalent of Robot Wars. They apparently invented the tactic of wrapping, where the opposition is covered with a material, so immobilised. This was later banned for being too clever by half.
9) Kind of. As reported in the essential Masters of Doom one day fellow Id-ites arrived in the office to find long-standing pet Mitzi gone. Carmack had taken it to the pound to get rid of it. Being an old cat, it's most likely it was put down. Man!
