Euro PS3 sales spank 360 2-to-1

Xbox 360 sales slump to last place as PS3 finds its feet
Xbox 360 was last week outsold by everything except Game Boy as PS3 sales make a charge for Wii's typically huge lead.

This follows the September 360 rush, as gamers eager to snap up some Halo 3 action pushed sales of Microsoft's console above that of Wii.

But on the week ending 21 October, European 360 sales settled at 37,000 - bottom of the current-generation list by a fair shot.

Meanwhile, here recent PS3 price cuts, which saw the launch of a cut-down 40GB PS3 for £299 and the 60GB model slashed to £349, has launched PS3 sales to a touch over 64,000 in the same week, falling just 6,000 sales short of Wii.

There's still no contest for DS though, which sold 171,000 in Europe last week according to VGChartz figures, and will surely soon outnumber humans on the planet.

Here are the hardware figures for Europe for the week ending 21 Oct:

  • DS: 171,260
  • Wii: 70,322
  • PS3: 64,087
  • PS2: 57,152
  • PSP: 54,449
  • 360: 37,303
  • GBA: 2,2861

Total: 456,859

Its what everyone was saying from the start, if Sony charged a sensible price for the PS3 it would sell well, now our points been proven, I just wanna know whos stupid enough to buy a 40GB stand alone console for £300 rather then the 60GB model with 2 games (and in some stores 2 bluray films too) for £350, common sense alone tells you what one to go for!

I feel a little sorry for the 360 really. It HAS got the best game catalogue so far..

Meh. Swings and roundabouts really isn't it? 360 shifted a lot in September thanks to Halo 3. PS3 shifts a lot in October due to people in the know snapping up the 60Gb before the cut down 40Gb is the only option. It's not like it's the death knell of the 360 or the PS3 ascending to the throne, it's just one of those things...

Sorry, that wasn't nearly ranty and irrational enough. *ahem*

Yeah but P$3 is teh suxx0r!!!!1111111111one 360 4eva!!!!

No wai. PS3 iz da bestest!!!111111111eleventyone

Etc.
Earthrod on 23 Oct '07
64,087 units is a lot but I'd like to know how many of the 40GB units were sold. As I have a feeling that the huge spike in sales could be down to people rushing out to buy the 60GB unit before they can't get it. If that is the case we might find that PS3 sales drop once the 60GB stock runs out.
bizbaz45 on 23 Oct '07
"Takahashi's comments follow the recent release of NPD sales statistics for September. The numbers showed that Sony sold only 119,400 PS3s during the month, in comparison to the Xbox 360 and Wii which both shifted more than 500k units at retail."

So if PS3's continue to sell the same it will be 1:1. There are too many articles about supposed sales on this website.

The only fun thing was seeing that the Gameboy is still selling.
Jonathan Ross on 23 Oct '07
I don't think this is a sign of things to come or anything, but I will say that I think the 360 is due a proper price-cut now to be honest.
Petebrolly on 23 Oct '07
Most interesting out of that is the PS3 finally out selling the PS2. Guess the price cut has pushed people make the switch.

Also why are people still buying GBA's? I'd almost understand if the DS didn't have full compatability like the PS3/360 but it does.
waffleaber on 23 Oct '07
It’s a bit obvious this was going to happen with the price cut so let’s wait and see later to see sales comparisons.

Personally I hope they all do equally well so we can all have great consoles and stop bitching about whose is better.
DaRockwilder1 on 23 Oct '07
Great stuff. Will get even more interesting once the price cut and 40gb hit the US
anagi on 23 Oct '07
Let us all remember the website that is being sourced here. Vgchartz is not the most reliable fan site out there. Why not contact Chart Track - who actually tracks this stuff - and ask them? I swear sometimes we all think you will believe anything just because its on the Web.
sarfon on 23 Oct '07
I like this Very Happy it means the christmas battle is starting up early. Sweet!!! Wink

Bring on the competition and let us the consumer benefit in the end.
vectra on 23 Oct '07
I would take these stats with a pinch of salt tbh. VGCharts don't exactly have the best of track records. I still remember when they didn't update 360 sales for 3 months in a row over xmas last year!
romeolovesyou on 23 Oct '07
This is as everyone has stated already due to the price cut, what will be interesting is to see software sales and if they have risen much because of this. Also with the 360 everyone who was gonna buy one recently bought it around halo 3, which would prob explain the sudden slump in sales.
quain-chi on 23 Oct '07
My point is why bother reporting on false numbers? It doesn't make sense especially in the UK where everyone knows what's happening in this industry better than any other country in Europe. I like CVG but quit with the VGchartz crap already. And besides VGchartz adjusts its numbers after ChartTrack reports on the industry. VGchartz does the same for mediacreate, famitsu and npd numbers and then claims the data for itself, saying it adjusted numbers. When will people wake up? Could you imagine what would happen if VGchartz quit calibrating aka adjusting its data to reflect real numbers? The site is laughable. Only in America, I guess.
sarfon on 23 Oct '07
zzzzzzzzz. Lets face it, if the tables were turned and MS were in sony's position nobody would be saying how great MS are. Infact most would be laughing and pointing. Everyone who has bought a PS3 up until the price cut was doing so because it's a "Playstation". The basic problem is (for me at least) there is still no good PS3 exclusives. Give it 12 months and i guess things may be different (although i still don't see anything I'd buy a PS3 for over my 360) but why miss out on everything the 360 has just because you want to own the sony machine. Just seems stupid to me... but there you go. Must keep up with the joneses.I couldn't care what machine i bought I just want the one with the best software and at the moment 360 is the best.... sorry sony.

Maybe they want to play Gameboy and Gameboy colour games? Confused

Even though, they are damn near impossible to get hold of Sad .
Biggwedge on 23 Oct '07
These figures may well be due to a number of reasons.

1. Lots of people bought the 360 with Halo3 a few weeks ago and they are now tailing off.
2. People may well be holding of buying a core system and waiting for the arcade system.
3. Loads of people may well be snapping up the 60gb ps3 while they can.
4. Sony have finally realised that the PS3 is far too expensive and we do not want to "work overtime to afford one" thank you very much.

I would expect the 360 to rebound in the run up to christmas although I also expect the PS3 sales to remain a lot higher than they have been.

juniorbeep: I bought a PS3 at launch in th UK, not because it was a 'playstation' but because I had been researching the various options for months and months, and made a decision that as a long term machine that i was going to invest my money in, ps3 was the one for me, based on the technical specs, the forthcoming games (which at the time were motorstorm and resistance). And no exclusives, well theres 2 from launch, and now we have Haze, ratchet, uncharted, to mention a few. but like you say if theyre not your thing then no need is there. I don't own a 360, and I don't feel the need, I have played gears but it doesn't grab me (can get it on my pc anyway now), and halo, well i'm sure that's good but havn't played it and wouldn't buy a 360 just for that (prob be on pc soon anyhow!)
anagi on 23 Oct '07
This is called 'saturation'.
It's the point where severyone who wants a 360 already owns one. Their sales were briefly boosted by Halo 3, but after almost 2 years it is inevitable that it's going to slow down and then eventually stop.

The only thing that counts is overall numbers, and if Sony sort their act out they will eventually catch up.

this is great news. thats something u gotta love about the playstation brand - they don't give up and you know that when u buy a playstation u can be playing great games for at least another 6 years (like the ps1 and ps2). unlike xbox (2 years it lasted wasn't it?). so a great investment in gaming, not so much on the hardware (360 core, 360 premium, 360 elite, 360 hd-dvd... soon to release 360 with blu ray! or what a 360 with cell!)

LOL
There's no need to feel sorry. 360 sold over 500,000 units the week Halo 3 launched so its naturally it would go into a slump after that sort of activity.
With PS3 on the other hand, you having people grabbing the 60GB units before BC is wiped out. A dirty tactic from Sony...
Im sure 360 will pick up steam again with the launch of the Arcade bundle and the impending release of Mass Effect.

BenJy! on 23 Oct '07
Pretty slack journalism at work - these figures are totally fabricated - some formats have sold more in the UK alone than the VG figures you quoted, and that's according to this week's official chart track hardware sales report

I'd pull the story pretty damn fast and check your sources in future
ralphwolfenstein on 23 Oct '07
Everyone who has bought a PS3 up until the price cut was doing so because it's a "Playstation"

Terrible stereotyping there - I think you'll find most people who bought the Playstation before the price cut bought it because;

a) They buy every console at launch (including Wii and 360)
b) They liked the look of a released game
c) Both of the above

I bought mine because I buy every machine at launch, and also found Resistance to be far better than 360's best release day game, Condemned.

And, hey - I bought a Gizmodo..
kricca on 23 Oct '07
CVG, your news title is incorrect.

Figures from your source for the UK hardware sales for the week:

Format - TW - LTD
DS - 49,866 - 4,440,223
Wii - 24,458 - 1,224,920
PS3 - 15,251 - 419,045
360 - 14,679 - 1,467,354
PSP - 10,531 - 2,119,465
PS2 - 8,726 - 9,474,769
GBA - 496 - 5,023,938

http://vgchartz.com/eweekly.php

15,251 compared to 14,679 is not 2-to-1 in the UK, you're looking at the overall European figures.

BTW the 360 has roughly a 2 million sales lead over the PS3 in Europe still (about 3.8 million 360s sold compared to 1.75 million PS3s), also according to VGChartz.

Has no-one actually noticed that CVG is using the wrong VGChartz figures here?

The headline says “UK PS3 sales spank 360 2:1”, but then the story actually uses the figures for the whole of Europe.

VG’s UK estimates actually have the two systems on almost the same number: -

VGChartz UK estimates for the last recorded week

Nintendo DS - 49,866 (4,440,223 in total)
Wii - 24,458 (1,224,920)
PlayStation 3 - 15,251 (419,045)
Xbox 360 - 14,679 (1,467,354)
PSP - 10,531 (2,119,465)
PlayStation 2 - 8,726 (9,474,769)
Game Boy Advance - 496 (5,023,93Cool

Any chance one of CVG’s hot writers will spot this mistake?

The spike in sales is simply because Sony have lowered the price to a more for some at least acceptable level.

I do however think that the tactic of saying get the 60GB while you can is a dirty trick to increase their sales though as people in the know, know full well that the 40GB is s**te compared to the 60GB considering what you get for the extra £50.

There will most likely be another SKU in the near future though knowing Sony now MS have the arcade system coming out Sony have to catch up & confuse us even more with yet another revision of the PS3 to keep up with the gates.
Richyrich316 on 23 Oct '07
It's like a tennis match between 360 and ps3 for the chance to play in the final with the wii! I don't honestly care who wins this war. I'm just looking forward to all the great games that this sort of competition will bring. Very Happy Everones a winner! Very Happy

I do think that the 360 is in a much stronger position than it's last gen unit. Considering that it has had failure problems it has sold fantastically.

Let's hope that both companies carry on trying to out-do each other so that us as consumers benefit even more.

The oddest thing about this ‘news’ story is that last week, the European estimates for the PS3 were actually higher than this week. According to VG, the PS3 shifted 74,746 units last week – only 300 odd units less than the Wii’s European total.

So, PS3 sales for this week have actually fallen by 10,000 units – further behind the Wii. So why is CVG covering this news now, when it already looks like this’ll be nothing more than a bump in sales? Think Sony’s PR dept has had a word in Future’s ear to push this story?
Box Factory on 23 Oct '07
Sony does not use that site for PR. I think the reporter just got lazy. Sony cannot use that site for anything bc its a public company and if Sony knowingly endorsed these numbers they would be in a world of hurt. vgchartz always changes its numbers from week to week based on numbers from media create, enterbrain and others. the guy that runs the site says he's adjusting the numbers to reflect actual market performance, making his numbers a moving target at best and a s**t storm on his off days.
trackerglobal on 23 Oct '07
So in the uk with the price cut in full effect the new sku 40gb ps3 at 300 quid, a massive marketing campaign in effect, it still only managed to sell over a thousand more units that the 360 at 15000 to 14000.

That to me is a slap in the face for sony, and whats to say most of them being snapped up where the last remaining 60gb ones (hmv, virgin and game were all low on that model in glasgow at the weekend), the forth coming weeks figures will be more interesting will the current spike in sales continue, i doubt it very much, 360 has had its spikes this year and sold way more than what ps3 managed.

In continental europe though its a different ballgame, 360 has a massive lead, but ps3 is eating into faster than anywhere in the worldout of japan..

Just goes to show europe, dont really have a clue.

Well, this is Europe, a.k.a Sonyland. This news doesn't surprise me in the least. Sony could release a turd on a golden plate and we'd still buy them in droves. Nothing beats Europe when it comes to consumerist mindlessness, and Sony is well aware of that.

God, we're such a bunch of self-loathing morons. If only people would stop to think for a minute about what it is they're buying...
Dinalfos on 23 Oct '07
Unreliable numbers at best. Chart Track are the only real source for these kind of figures and they don't publish them to the public in general.

Made up figures to glorify a mild increase in sales. How can this website be taken seriously when they already posted a greatly inaccurate article to start with.

Personally I think this is people snapping up 60gb models, which has already been confirmed in a previous report. With nothing to really sustain higher sales for the PS3 I expect these will drop rapidly once the 60gb models are no longer available.

this is great news. thats something u gotta love about the playstation brand - they don't give up and you know that when u buy a playstation u can be playing great games for at least another 6 years (like the ps1 and ps2). unlike xbox (2 years it lasted wasn't it?). so a great investment in gaming, not so much on the hardware (360 core, 360 premium, 360 elite, 360 hd-dvd... soon to release 360 with blu ray! or what a 360 with cell!)

5 years - 2001 to 2006.

And how many different models of the PS3 have we had so far??? Rolling Eyes

well, in the US (not sure about the UK), the PS2 came out in 2000, and Sony's still making games for it. so i count that as seven years, and not five. as far as the different models of PS3, i only count two: models with backwards compatibility, and models without backwards compatability. otherwise all models are roughly the same, with the only differences being hdd space. the same is true for the 360; however, one of those models is without hdd and HDMI at all.

The new Arcade core pack has HDMI so all it lacks between that & the premium & elites is the HDD

Must keep up with the joneses.I couldn't care what machine i bought I just want the one with the best software and at the moment 360 is the best.... sorry sony.

er...ive played loads of 'exclusives' on the ps3 (ninja gaiden sigma, super stardust HD,tekken5 HD,Flow,er...bugger)but as of this week it will be...pro evo, jericho(granted not both exclusive)...and last but not least...ratchet and clank TOD...then next month...drakes fortune..er...then HAZE...er...then... Wink

I feel a little sorry for the 360 really. It HAS got the best game catalogue so far..

Only 'cos the PS3's and Wii's are so poor; faint praise.

If only people would stop to think for a minute about what it is they're buying...

hmmmmm so you own a ps3? Laughing

juniorbeep: I bought a PS3 at launch in th UK, not because it was a 'playstation' but because I had been researching the various options for months and months, and made a decision that as a long term machine that i was going to invest my money in, ps3 was the one for me,

Your'e buying a console mate not a car

Then you realised it had a crap pad. Laughing

I like this Very Happy it means the christmas battle is starting up early. Sweet!!! Wink

Bring on the competition and let us the consumer benefit in the end.

There is no Competition, lets get real her the ps3 is a games console with no decent games.

No, I don't Razz

The spike in sales is simply because Sony have lowered the price to a more for some at least acceptable level.

NOOO? really, i was under the impression that everyone just thought, hmmm this would be a good week to buy a ps3! I'm so glad someone has told me!
