Wii Animal Crossing to be an MMO

Japanese source drops Edge magazine a bone
Edge magazine is reporting that Nintendo's Wii iteration of its hugely popular Animal Crossing franchise is taking a massively multiplayer online direction.

While we're still waiting for Nintendo to officially confirm anything about a Wii version of Animal Crossing (apart from the fact that it's coming), Edge's latest issue opens with the news lead: "Animal Crossing goes MMO".

The latest issue of the mag reports, "A Japanese source has confirmed to Edge that the upcoming Wii iteration of Animal Crossing is set to be a social networking MMO."

No further details are reported so we're left hanging about exactly when we'll be able to buy cheap turnips off the black market in Russia.

When contacted Nintendo only say it wouldn't comment on rumour and speculation. Bet your biggest fish this is happening...

Shocked
I don't know how that will work when Nintendo don't let you communicate with anybody except your friends. Confused

It'll be interesting to see what they allow you do do (i.e. text/voice chat?)

I think Animal Crossing was always a game that could be an MMO. The only problem is Nintendo's rubbish online service with the lack of proper communication.
vulcanraven01 on 24 Oct '07
I was wondering that myself.

Is it possible that after months of Nintendo going "Online gaming? Nobody wants that!" they're finally relenting? Or have they just found a way to circumvent the 'friends only' option? Because that'd be nice.

I mean I'm not really interested in the whole social networking thing, but if this gets more companies making online games then I'm all for it.

But since it's an unofficial source that's said it, I'm not counting any chickens. After all, they could have been making fun of the current Wii online status. Or not as the case may be.

Most important thing is the HD - Wii has only 512mb of HD - Is too small for MMO.
wildhook2 on 24 Oct '07
in wild world on the ds quite an online community seems to have build-up. using the ds wi-fi connection. players just swap their AA town codes via game forums, and can then visit other AA towns, meet others, swap items, and chat using the on screen keyboard. so there's no reasons why the wii version couldn't just expand on that mmo system. hopefully nintendo will have also offered wii owners a voice-chat headset like the ds has got, by next year. that way people could communicate much quicker than having to text type each time they just wanna say hello to new visitors.

95% of MMO stuff is stored serverside, I don't know why limited HD space would be a problem.

The only stuff that's kept on PC HDs for MMOs is geometry data (to speed up load times), UI settings and some sound effects & music. And it's not like Animal Crossing needs fast updates for combat or anything.

Erm, no? All the info would be on the disc, unlike a PC mmo..

It would just the same as home without all the great technology. I think I'd prefer Animal crossing to home though. I'm a bit of a collector when it comes to games. Thats why i like Diablo 2. I can just imagine the arguments over trading specific items like a leopard print clock that matches your decor. You know people will do anything to complete a set.

I'm not sure but i think things are taking a turn around. Devs themselves are navigating around the problem. I'm sure an EA game comin up does away with the friend code thing. I'm sure i've seen it...or was i dreaming Confused

I'll look for link later if i can be bottomd. But hopefuly Nintendo will take note. I mean how can they expect mario kart to have a 12 player online racer with just friends you socialise with or even Medal of honours 32 player online Shocked

Nah things have got to change...

Well Mario strikers let you compete with non friends so I do not think this will be a problem.

I've already sold my soul to Tom Nook - what more do they want?

This probably won't be an issue since most MMO's need a hard drive because of patches, but if its like the other Animal Crossings it'll all be there from the start.

And, to be pedantic, the Wii doesn't have a hard drive, its flash memory.
Chris_Eals on 24 Oct '07
that would suck badly.
there would be big online fights about chopping trees and stuff like this
i don't care if i'm the only one i still think its a bad idea. unless you still get a town to yourself i'm not buying Evil or Very Mad
Blue Nose on 24 Oct '07
Very Happy I was hoping it would go this way. I should hope that you would have options for what was allowed in your town (whether strangers were allowed to enter, whether they could chop/plant trees, etc) and that it would be secure for the kiddies with good parental controls. Other than that, this should be great.
Stewgeary999 on 24 Oct '07
How will it work? How? HOW? Will you only visit someone who has your friend code or can you actually, physically go about the place?

Also, I feel I should say, i do like this idea! Very Happy
