Just when you thought PS3 was on the verge of getting hold of that triple A title it needs so much, that very same triple A title it needs so much gets delayed.
Back in September at the Tokyo Game Show Konami said the game would hit 'this winter'. That's now been changed to "second quarter of 2008" at the earliest.
The official statement from Konami Japan reads:
Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots Release Update October 31, 2007 Konami announced today that Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots, the latest in the Metal Gear series, is scheduled to be released in the second quarter of 2008.
Konami had initially intended to release Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots this winter and has been working on the production of the title.
Konami has decided to delay the title's release in order to make further improvements to the quality of the game and provide even greater enjoyment for more customers worldwide. Konami will continue its efforts to make Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots meet everyone's expectations.
We don't doubt you Konami, but that sure is a bit of a blow.
Erm before all the fanboys come rushing in, it did say in the last three or so trailers 'March 2008'. No one expected it this winter anyway. Frankly, this comes across as more anti-ps3 spin. But anyway, if it has been delayed a few months, I know it's because Konami are just trying to make the best game they can, and I don't doubt them. It'll be worth the wait. For such a high profile and important game to the PS3 cause, surely it has to be a case of "it's ready when it's ready!" just like Bungie were allowed to do with H3.
Releasing a half finished version now could be the final nail in the coffin.

This game was never coming out before march - we all knew that. Also, is'nt R&C a AAA, Gavin? Is'nt Resistance a AAA game, or motorstorm? They have sold rather well...And I'm still enjoying them to this day...No wonder there are so many fanboys on this site.

They may have got their facts muddled about Christmas but march is not in the second quarter. The fact that they are announcing that so early rather than annoucing it then is not good news.
Hmm... I'm certain I read on Kotaku or elsewhere someone predicting that this would happen, and it meaning that the 360 version would be out Christmas '08. If only I could find that damned article!

March isn't the second quater, its the first, April is the start of the second, and if they're talking financial quaters March is the forth, so the second wouldn't start until July. I suspect that we'll see it May-ish though, well in Japan anyway..

Just because they sold well doesnt make them AAA games in my book, look at The Sims. In my opinion motorstorm was not a AAA title (can't say anything about resistance or R+C as I have not played them yet). Thats my fanboy rant over

i for one am a metal gear fan, and id much rather it be put back a bit so they can get it spot on. rather than release a "rushed" version. it'd be a bigger let down if it was crap, like pes 2008, which let down millions of pes fans. for those of you that scream "oh no what shall i do" etc. i suggest you get something else going on in your lives :0)

Big games always get delayed but I really can't see this as being as good as they say. All MGS games, while have been good, have also been highly overrated. I doubt it'll sell the console in the way some think. It'll just do a Halo 3 and sell well initially...
On the subject of Halo 3, has anyone else been disappointed by it? I think its rather lame. Not compelled to play it again after finishing it and I prefer the online mode of Gears of War to that. Just feels lifeless and shallow

But the final word on release was March 31st, so it ain't that bad.
Surely, the current word on release is second quarter, sometime... so that final word is old news.
Games get delayed as has already been pointed out... But what is a more believable reason for any game delay?

Umm... March is 1st Quarter. The press release says 2nd quarter. Yes... it was a press release from Konami. Stop acting like CVG is out to get the PS3. They simply published a press release from Konami.

For the first time ever, its 'supposed' to be a simultaneous launch everywhere, well i read that somewhere anyway. I thought it was penned for release around march next year anyway, will probably be released in June though
people keep saying "there's no need to buy a ps3 until march", why? because metal gear has been put back? ps3 has more going for it than one title ffs. warhawk is seriouly awesome, motorstorm is great fun. cod4 and assasins creed are here next month, as is haze. dont forget you cant play your christmas blu rays on your xbox. im not a sony fanboy, i just apreciate good hardware :0)
Why are people accusing CVG of being late or spreading slander?
They've posted Konami's press release, and posted it in a timely manner. Are konami late?
Hell, CVG don't even draw any attention to the end of the statement, even though it could clearly be perceived that Konami are hinting at a multiplat release.

I'm spekaing my mind. Why pay Ł300 for a console that has no worthwhile games until Q2 2008? Surely if your hearts set on PS3 then you will use your head and wait until the good games start getting released. You are more likley to have another price drop before then rather than wasting money on one now and having to buy games that are of a lower quality than you usually would, just so you actually have something to play. Of course thats my opinion on the matter, not fact.

What about warhawk, motorstorm, unchartered, R+C tof, little big planet, ut3, gran turismo 5, home plus blu-ray (its good being able to watch HD movies without strapping an extra drive to your console). And dont forget the multi format games like cod4, assassins creed etc etc, and if people are gonna buy a ps3 just for mgs4 then thats just weird.

Hmmm, I would rather it be that way, as I do not personally use a console to play movies. Movies wear out the laser quicker than games do as the movie constantly takes data from the disc, not at random points like a game does. At least then, If the HD-DVD drive does go t**s up, I can still play games on my games machine.
In fact, I would like to see the next generation of consoles have user replaceable drives, so if the lasers do go t**s up, we can go out and get a replacement/spare while the other one is away for repair etc.

When naming the PS3 why didn't Sony just cut to the chase and just call it delaystation! I'm sick of all these bloody setbacks!! And may I add that Pro Evo 2008 is utterly terrible!!! Wish I'd stuck with the PS2 version!!!!
a few people have said what i have said previously. I think if you own a 360 as i do and have done from launch there is little to no point in buying a ps3 and if current trends carry on no point in swapping this generation. Shame as i loved the ps1. The ps2 i felt was over hyped and then ps3... well sony marketing team brought out the fanfare but to be honest left me a bit cold. i have said this before and was met with the usual defensive PS3 owners who can't admit that the PS3 has so far and probably for the next 6 months at least been a total let down. Please nobody say what great exclusive titles there are because there hasn't been. If Rachet and Clank is the best the PS3 can muster count me out. It was all about Blu ray for sony with the PS3 getting that as a dominant format. Ps3 has been so far a bit of a disaster. Hasn't really bought anything new to the table. The trend setters have now become the trend followers.
I agree with most of your post "juniorbeep" but even as a 360 owner and yet to adopt PS3, I genuinely hope that Sony do get their act together and realise that gamers want a true next gen (aka current gen)console and not an innovation in general purpose chip design for the masses which is what the "cell" has been heralded as.
The current business model seems to be that it will be a general purpose "super" processor that will cater for everything from your fridge and domestic appliances to university mainframes, so maybe not neccessarily designed by the IBM boffs for a cutting-edge gaming machine?
I'ma 360 owner and if the PS3 started kicking ass I would think about getting one as well.but rigt now it's "why bother" .seems almost every game for every format gets delayed these days so thats no biggie
so many games seem to come out on the 360 1-4 weeks before PS3 (except UT3 ) I would hate that if I only had a PS3 .
in terms of exclusives,even though I'm not a massive fan, give me halo multiplayer over lair and motorstorm any day
tony b ... yeah you are right a lot of what they put in the ps3 scaled down versions are planned for lots of other sony items i'm sure. It makes financial sense. Who can't blame them for wanting to kill 2 birds with one stone. I think it is a real shame they have lost sight of things really games-wise. I have no loyalty to MS or Sony I just want to play the best games by the best developers. I think sony have become increasing reliant on marketing and brand loyalty to sell machines. I know it's early days for the PS3 although it's getting on for 12-18 months in some territories and I feel really let down by it all. I feel no real buzz or excitement about exclusives or forth coming titles. Saying that now a big raft of 360 games are out I'm not sure what the next big thing is there either. But anyway You have to say the 360 has had a good year games-wise and the PS3 is slow and a little bit of a shambles. Not saying I wouldn't ever buy one I just need 3 or 4 solid titles that change my mind.

Not enough people want Blu Ray or HD DVD so your point is pointless. Oddly enough most people want games to play on their game console.
