Sure, Unreal Tournament III looks incredible, but will the PS3 version live up to the high-detail, high frame rate standards of the PC game? Yes, says Epic's Mark Rein.
"I was playing the PS3 build for a few hours tonight and it is really, really fantastic," said Rein on the official Gears of War Forums. "[It's] amazingly smooth and solid. I think you PS3 users are in for a huge treat with UT3."
You might be thinking to yourself "he would say that", but from what we've seen of the PS3 version, we agree with Mr. Rein - it does run very smoothly on Sony's console, even if there is a slight loss of the highest graphical detail achievable on a top-end PC.
Rein has confirmed that Epic aims to have the game running at a locked 30fps by the time it's finished. Unfortunately, this looks like it won't happen until next year.
Runs fine on high settings my PC with a 2 year old gfx card( 7800GTX, pretty much the same as the PS3's ) @ 1280x1024( avg 40FPS ), maybe they mean its running at 1980x1080 or whatever or medium.
what does he want? a medal for doing his job properly?! it may run smooth but the sci-fi n phasers make this a real turn off. CoD4 which got a 10/10 review will run just as good and play much much better. the realism and grit makes CoD4 the better game. plus building up your character online after youve whipped the single players hardest setting will be amazing!
I agree with you in regards to cod4, but listen to yourself properly, your knocking Halo as well there...

I wish he was, nothing wrong with that
I'm looking forward to COD4 myself but UT has always had a place in my collection. I just hope they do something new with the weapons and not just hash out the same stuff again.
Its news that a game runs smoothly? Guess that says a lot about gaming really.
30fps? Surely this should be 60FPS by now.
Halo 3 is 30fps & lower but they still enjoy it, no difference!
True, but it is very noticable. Games should be running at 60FPS on the 360 and PS3. I find it quite pathetic that this isn't a industry standard. Developers are constantly bragging about the 'next-gen' and yet were still on 30FPS.
I'm just finding it pretty shocking that the performance barrier is being hit already it's time for devs to pull out some proper coding and use some tricks to get that hardware doing even more amazing things.

Hit the nail on the head. What this article says to me is that the PS3/360 is already being pushed to run a game, and then only managing 30FPS.

Not really a good sign so early on. Especially with PR men going on about how "extreme" the hardware is and everything it can do.
Then again quite a few PS2 and Xbox1 launch games were stuttering and hitting the limit. After devs got comfortable though they managed to use coding tricks to keep things going.
Hopefully they do the same again and soon. I really want to see these boxes output something jaw dropping. So far my mouth has opened but the jaw hasn't dropped just yet

When Gears of War first came out my jaw dropped. I had taken a year out of gaming, came back and saw this (missing the hype). That was the last time I thought "Christ on a bike, this looks awesome" when I saw a game.
Oh, actually I will partially correct myself. When I first loaded up the beta of COD4 and ran forwards. It runs at 60FPS and you can immediately tell the difference.

Gears of War was an amazing title when released. Still is visually a very stunning title. My jaw did drop when I saw that title however so I stand corrected.
My jaw also dropped when I took a look at MP3 on the Wii after loading it up. The little touches like the reflections of the environment just look superb. I also like how you can see your characters face through the helmet if you look hard enough, you can see her blink and follow where you point the wiimote.
For a machine that isn't the absolute word on power little things like those really show what can be done with skillful programming and a dedicated team.
next gen games are "still" only 30fps, but it has to handle a major leap graphics and effects as well u need to remember. ps3 could handle old ps2 games at very high frame rates cause the graphics are nothing.
the higher the technology, the more it gets pushed. if 60 or 120fps becomes standard id be really surprised, cause someone will always be pushing the effects harder which will limit the frames it can do.
to get 120fps as standard the hardware would need to cost much more than the average punter would ever dream of paying.. which means it probably wont happen.
I don't mind either way as long as it's not the train wreck that Deus Ex was on the PS2. That was horrible!!

Judging by the demo its a great game
It runs fine on your PC because it is a crippled Beta demo. they didn't release the game at full specs because they wanted to find the lowest end of the spectrum that the game would play on. They already had the highest. When I first loaded the game up it ran at a default resulution of 320x200. try and make anything out of that garble. No, the realism and grit does not make it a better game, that is all down to personal taste. Some people prefer it, some people prefer sci-fi, but that is opinion and does not make it a 'better game'.
Okay it would be ideal to have the game running like a grease covered seal. UT III seems like a very high power game. PS3 is still largely unmapped territory for developers and I am sure that we will see progress. In no way does this imply no more can be done. All development has a learning curve. I reckon not only will we certainly see the PS3 step forward from its current issues but also I think the 360 still has a lot of untapped potential. Both machines still have a lot of room to move forward... I actually think we will see larger jumps than in previous generations. In Japan the software ball has not even started to roll properly for either new system.

yeah. you don't want the Halo-police to come bust you up, do you?
