First-day Mario Galaxy sales unimpress

130k in sales for opening day of Wii's biggest game - Not quite as stellar as most expected...
It's out; Japanese punters can finally sprint to the shops and pick up a copy of the awesome Super Mario Galaxy... though it looks like a lot of them might be holding off until the weekend.

According to Japanese site Ameblo, Mario's big Wii outing has shifted 130,000 copies in its first day of release in Japan, which is a bit unimpressive for the console's biggest "hardcore" release to date.

Sure, we never expected it to reach the sales heights of nan and girl-favourites Wii Sports and Wii Play, but going by the same sales data it's not even doing much better than Zelda: Twilight Princess.

But, we digress; it's only the first day of release and the weekend's yet to arrive. So we're sure there are still plenty of Japanese gamers yet to run off to the shops for their copies - and it's sure to shift much faster in the West.

And for those who don't give a monkey about the sales numbers it's still a bloody fantastic game. We've finished it already and you can expect our full verdict early next week...

Yeah, yeah, very interesting. Now, down to business.

When can I expect this on the PC ?

Fact of the matter is that the Wii doesn't need AAA titles as has been shown with the sales figures since it's launch. The people who are buying the Wii in their millions don't care about the quality of games and they are mostly non gamers. Why would non-gamers care about a AAA game.

I think its because of the small planet thingies, its very different from the original. Im not sure if i like the idea of jumping from floaty round thing thant kind of resembles a malteaser to another floaty round thing that kind of resembles an M&M.

Developers are going to get tired of spending good money and time on hardcore games for the wii if they don't sell as well as cheap-bottom mini games. I think ninty have made a bed that they will have to sleep in with the casual crowd. Not that they would be bottomd, having earned a mint since the wii was released. Worrying times for the rest of us though. Confused

Here here, most people i know who have got a Wii are only interested in party games and such, another wii sports or the wii fit bulls**t is what you're after, Probably couldn't pick out mario in a police line up

Some planets are huge some are small, you will certainly not be spending all your time jumping around mini planets.

Well 130,000 on its first day isn't so bad actually - considering the population in Japan isn't as large as the whole of North America and Europe. I did expect a higher number in sales, but since Japan's big thing now is the casual gaming market, hardcore games like Super Mario Galaxy will probably appeal more to US and Europe gamers than it would there.

Whoops...nevermind that...heh

Mario Galaxy has been pre-ordered by 700,000 people in Japan!! How about giving them a chance to pick up they're copy!! Oh wait, I forgot, this website (along with many others) are about as fair as a referee is at Celtic Park when they play anyone else! Always desperate to put a negative spin on anything Nintendo related!!!

Oh look, its still kicking the PS3's ass but NOT AS MUCH AS BEFORE!!! so the Fumke what! I say it again, YOU GUYS ARE A DISGRACE TO JOURNALISM!!

Mike Jackson may be a bit biased towards Nintendo, but at least he doesn't shamelessly bash the other systems.

I write this knowing full well that it will never change...but anyway...

I love how any article can be written and so long as the word "Wii" appears anywhere near it then the forum will spark up with comments liks this:

> The Wii is only for party games.

>> Hardcore gamers don't like the Wii.

>>> Nintendo are rubbish.

Don't let me stop you though. Are you ready...

"Wii."

GO!

Well said, I completely agree. Luckily, most hardcore gamers use the wii as a second console anyway, but still...

This should surprise no one. There are 5 million plus Wiis sitting out there purchased by Soccer moms, iPod fadsters and retired folks that will never play anything but Wii Sports and Wii fitness.

Anicdote:
A co-worker and I were talking about Halo 3 and Heavenly Sword when a pair of ladies overheard us and both proclaimed how they had Wiis. When asked if they were getting Mario Galaxy or Metroid Prime 3, they stared at us blankly. They had never heard of them. That's Nintendo's demographic now. Wii Sports 2 will be their next "blockbuster".

How sad...

You are quick to call everyone else idiots, despite the fact you have reacted like someone has told you your mother has a fat head.

chris_gower on 2 Nov '07
130k in one day isn't bad considering that's more then the total amount of Wiis sold in Japan last month, take into account that Nintendo's games sell consistently over time unlike games like Halo 3 which sell good at launch then disappear off the charts.

OK back up. Yes it was sad for me when Nintendo were in last place, as I believe that they bring more to the industry than anyone else, but the software support was lacking and they could not compete in the marketing department. I am not annoyed that they are in first place obviously, but it seems that everyone else is (Wah, the wii only has mini games, wah, my wii has dust on it? etc..) what is wrong with people, Sony have made far too many mistakes (and after they're treatment of Lik sang, can burn in hell for all I care) I have no problem with microsoft (just they're online community!) Do you not see my point though, Sony have all this (well deserved in my opinion) bad publicity, and it seems CVG and especially those Nazi's over at Gamespot (8.8 for Twighlight Princess, and 8.5 for Metroid prime 3 -are you Fumke kidding me?) are trying to maufacture bad publicity for Nintendo. I know they have they're faults.. but please, how is mario Galaxy selling 130k in its first day dissapointing? 700,000 HAVE pre-ordered it in Japan! and we all know the game will feature in the chart regulary for the next 2 years probably (think animal crossing, Mario kart DS and new super Mario Bros!) This is no Halo 3 flash in the pan - a game that sells shed loads on the back of massive hype and then dissapears into the ether.. ****!

But hey, Nintendo are winning! So I am happy.

130,000 copies in one day doesn't sound bad at all to me. That is headed for over a million copies with 2 weeks.

Also Mario games hang about the charts for AGES, it will still do very well, just maybe not compared to Halo 3 first day sales.

I shall reserve judgement until the weekend.

how the hell can you have that sort of completely unfaltering love for Nintendo when they have proved that they are just as bad as anyone else.

And they do chuck out crap mini-games, of course that is an issue. Deal with it and be happy with the REAL games they do release, 8.8 is a good score - I bet one of their main reasons for not giving it better result was because it was a GC port, not particularly utilising the Wii's potential.

And it doesn't make them Nazi's, it's their friggin opinion!

It also made the point that while that is great figures, compared to the amount of consoles sold and compared to PREVIOUS Mario releases it isn't quite as good as expected.

Deal with it, it is fact that has been pointed out. It could pick up and I'm sure it will, but what are they supposed to do, ignore the fact, embellish the figures? No, because THAT would be b.s. journalism.

And I think the reason Mario will be up there the whole time, just like it was on the N64 (i can't comment on the cube, i didnt own one so didnt check the sales charts) was because it was one of the truly great releases while a lot of other crap was chucked out the whole time, so it was a truly standout title.

Anyway, chill out.

Hahaha - on the one hand we have PS3 owners with egos as fraglie as a bubble, and then we have Wii owners who have slowly been getting progressively mardy over the year....

Stop being so elitist! Gaming is a mainstream hobby Who gives a f**k if 2 ladies don't want Metroid or Mario theres millions who do and anybody that has owned these games on previous consoles are probably goin to buy the new ones and maybe introduce them to people who may not have been interested before
the monk 21 on 2 Nov '07
Jesus, I thought PS3 fanboys were bad but some of the Wii-boys in here just about top them off...
Personally i'd be slightly annoyed if I was Nintendo. Games like Mario and Zelda always sell better in Japan and to find out that Mario Galaxy, the game everyone has been touting as taking Mario 64's crown, has been so under whelming in first day sales must be abit of a blow.
I think Nintendo can only blame themselves though. Wii is seen as more of a casual console by the mainstream public and games like Mario Galaxy won't be as appealing as Wii Sports etc. Even if they are interested in Mario Galaxy, they aren't the sort of consumers like us that will run out to the shop to pick up a game on release day.
Don't get me wrong, im not bashing the Wii but simply telling it as it is.
I'll still be getting a Wii early next year though but it won't be for Mario Galaxy, it'll be for the multi-player titles such as Super Smash Brawl and Mario Kart Wii.

Maybe the slow first day sales are because of so many bloody Mario games or games featuring Mario have come out this year for Wii and people have lost interest. As awesome as Galaxy looks theres definately such a thing as too much Mario. Anyway lets see how Galaxy sales go over the weekend.

Yes, I have read the link, and I know the date. You'll also note the whole BBC page is the old design. So it's really not hard to miss.

I didn't realise that once something is a few years old it didn't happen.

My point is that people tend to quickly forget the past.

So yes, my point still stands; and yes, my point is still valid.

Hey I love Nintendo to bits but Chris' point does still stand. The last poster's Nazi comparison is twisted logic, I'm sure you'll agree youreslf! At the end of the day corporations will screw people over to make more money. On one hand there's people like Shigero Miyamoto who creates all the games we love Nintendo for but then on the other hand there's the business men of Nintendo who are just as money crazy as the Sony business executives. You really got to look at these things objectively.

And in relation to this news story - what Sinthetic said!

the monk 21 on 2 Nov '07
Cianski, if you think Miyamoto makes games JUST for the love of his art and not a huge commercial gain then you've been sniffing the bostick a bit too long!

Shig's will be on a VERY nice performance related bonus not to mention his healthy stock options, so believe me he's not just in it for the plaudits & attention (otherwise he'd be working for R*!)

No one can genuinely argue with want the Ninty Top Brass have done in turning the company around since the management reshuffle...record profits & trouncing the competition, they must be doing something right!

The new casual crowd of Nintendo doesnt appreciate these kind of games .The remaining old-time Nintendo fans will push this to some serious numbers but way below what people were expecting when they said the "wait until Galaxy to see numbers boom !!" argument ...

Nintendo is washing themselves in casual gold ,this is only a collateral effect so the "Wii win !" fanboys can rest easy their domination of old time jubilees and soccer moms will continue uninterrupted ...

Like Sinthetic said, who cares? The game will be ace. Metroid games never sells that much (though they should) but they're still awesome games. OK, Mario is a much bigger franchise but I'm just saying Mario Galaxy will also be great..

Like other people have also said, games like Halo 3 sells loads to begin with and then drop like a stone. This game's legs will go much further I reckon. And New Super Mario Bros is still selling today and gone on to 11mil+ in sales.

I'm glad such good stuff is coming out for the Wii now as I'm mega bored of my 360. Sick of shooting things all the time!

Why did you buy a console which always was going to have a library full of FPS then?

Also, 'such good stuff' , yea there are a few quality games for the Wii, but they are only just coming out, and 99% of the Wii library is absolute cack (unless you like Mini Games, Brain Training and bad ports).

But i do like to stress this link

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2375967.stm

do nintendo love you? no they love money, like every other friggin corporation. you may like the games but be a bit objective every now and then.

EVERYTHING nintendo do isn't the best thing since sliced bread. (or should that be crustless bread, nowadays)

You know what, IBM built one of the worlds first computers so the (actual) Nazi's could keep track of all the Jewish prisoners, and catalogue them for their evil porposes! And Nintendo tend to use IBM processors in their machines!!! Yikes, I'd better stop liking Nintendo now because, technically, THEY are nazi's.....

Oh wait, that was a long, long time ago. Now that price fixing story (that I have always been aware of) happened 5 years ago, not a long time you may say, but in an industry that is not much more than 30 years old, it IS a long time. Don't get me wrong, it sucked what Nintendod did, but I genuinly feel thay are the best in the game. I love they're games and I always have. And I have always hated Sony! I have a PS2 (and more games for it than I have for my cube!) Although Sony made hardly any of them... My god Primal was s**t! I dont like Nintendo for the sake of it, Its not like supporting a football team!

I feel that pe3ople have it in for the wii for no good reason. It has not even been out for a year for gods sake, and there are some great games on it (whoever said 99% are crap must be either smoking crack, or claiming to own a wii when they dont)

Oh, and 8.8 is not a good enough score for TP, it just is not. Gamespot consistantly underscore Nintendo games, and I dont believe its they're opinion, I think its bias.. AND THATS MY FUMKE OPINION!!!

Have you played Metroid prime 3? Please!

They gave the new simpsons game 7.0 and it is a disgrace! a horribly basic game of which the rights are owned by fox, whom own cnet, whom own Gamespot! hmmmm

I know it seems like I'm splitting hairs, so see for yourself, it really really sucks. And I am a simpsons fan!

And as for the Lik sang thing, It was worse than bad, it was unforgivable. Lik sang were the best importer around, who would send you a free gift just for shopping with them.

So in conclusion... Fumke gamespot (especially that greasy virgin who reviewed TP - he claimed the lack of voice actin was a flaw!) fumke CVG (i used to love you magazine, but now you just suck - I only post her to make Sony fanboys s**t themselves because i think GTA is overrated (its not an exclusive HA HA)
I am not even gonna Fumke Sony themselves because, hey, they are doing such a good job of that themselves... well I wouldn't wanna spoil it for them!!)

Henceforth named the Playstation Hindenburg. Dont kill any Nazi's when you crash!!

I look forward to to tirade of abuse following this post tommorrow, peace out!

Ugh, so much arguing...

Wasn't there a big release event for mario64?
Was there one for Galaxy?

Still, Monday'll give us a clearer picture.
Nollog on 3 Nov '07
Foolish mortals! I'd sell a liver to play Galaxy today (I have a spare, right?...RIGHT???!!) Laughing
Stu_the_great on 3 Nov '07
Maybe it hasn't sold enough because so many people can see how similar the graphics engine looks to Super Mario Sunshine and familiarity can breed a lack of 'must have'.

Ok, so the Sony/LikSang thing was bad, but you act like Nintendo are whiter than white

read this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/2375967.stm

)

read the link and noticed it was dated October 2002, bang up to date with the times. Have you saved this link for this day to show how naughty Nintendo are?

The European Union itself is a 'fix' as it was not voted for by British people and they hold referendums until they get what they call 'the right choice' (and then don't let people vote again). They were hypocrites to get on the moral high ground both with Nintendo and later with Microsoft. Firstly, although it may seem unfair that Nintendo charged more in some countries, if they want to charge more in some regions then they should arguably be allowed to do so. This is entertainment they are selling, not vital supplies like food and oil and those countries they are charging more to may be better off in some respects such as lower taxes/quality of life etc anyway. If the European Union wants to have an ideal where every country is charged the same it doesn't necessarily make it a fairer or more moral choice to the buyers or to Nintendo.

"Stop being so elitist! Gaming is a mainstream hobby Who gives a f**k if 2 ladies don't want Metroid or Mario theres millions who do"

Or even one hundred and thirty thousand.

Sorry didn't realise that only those who purchase a game on its first day of release can play the game also the mario games are the best selling games ever so theres quite a few more than 130,000

This should surprise no one. There are 5 million plus Wiis sitting out there purchased by Soccer moms, iPod fadsters and retired folks that will never play anything but Wii Sports and Wii fitness.

Quoted for truth.

I guess wii owners see galaxy as a needless spinoff of mario party, and would rather that mario stuck to minigames instead of all this inappropriate jumping.

700,000 HAVE pre-ordered it in Japan!

False.

Those were RETAILER pre-orders.

Sadly I have to agree with this. It's just one of the draw backs of aiming a console at casual gamers.
Slowly but surely the hardcore gamers will begin to feel more and more alienated as Wii owners, especially with games like Wii-Fit on the horizon, a game I believe will sell MILLIONS of units.

130k in one day isn't bad considering that's more then the total amount of Wiis sold in Japan last month, take into account that Nintendo's games sell consistently over time unlike games like Halo 3 which sell good at launch then disappear off the charts.

I'm sure you wouldn't say that if you knew 142k copies of Halo 3 were sold this week (week 5), securing a second place on the USA charts.

A few things...
Like you said, halo might have sold 142k this WEEK, in the us, it's biggest market. Mario has sold around that in one DAY, in it's second biggest market.

Guess what though? Even I think the sales are somewhat less from what I had expected. But for people to get caught up in calling this a flop? That's really stupid.

And it launched on a thursday, people. If you knew anything about japan, you'd know that sales aren't as bad as people are making it out to be. Wait a week.

Since when do we get weekly usa charts? thought they just get monthly

130,000 in a day? if that keeps up it'll have sold 1.3 million by next week, and this is bad!? oh yeah, off topic but mp3 is my game of the year so far. masterpiece.

silly fools

mario wont sell badly

as people have pointed out quite alot of wii owners are casual gamers and so wont be part of the crowd that rush out at 4 in the morning to buy the game though they will probably buy it eventually.

Twilight Princess got 8.8 eh? Hmmm... Would've given it a 6 or 7 myself...

I'm sure this game will sell well. Probably too well. I hate the silly plumber and his games... but um, I'm in the minority so... bye!

(I'd consider Metroid though- but I'd need to see more games with that kind of quality to get me interested in the Wii. A lot more.)

i don't mean to go all fanboy here but metroid is worth buying a wii for, seriously. halo 3 got it's coat and f**ked off through neglect after 2 days with prime 3.oh yeah, just an afterthought: you'd give twilight princess 6-7/10 but you haven't got a wii,so you played the 'cube version then?

I've already pre ordered my copy of this for my Wiii along with COD 4 for the 360.

My question is this... Who gives a toss how much it sold in Japan? Either buy it or don't, simple really.

Nintendo do.

They were dissapointed with Zelda TP sales too whereas the sales for their endless training & casual (or simple range as its known in Jap) games make them millions.

This will make Nintendo (& other devs - as they never sell as well as NInty do on their consoles anyway) think twice about creating proper full blown games for the Wii - which should concern us.

Casual games have always sold well in Japan. Wasn't Dance Dance Revolution in the charts out there for months at one point? Razz

if that's the case I hope MG sells millions! I don't want to see Cooking Mama 2 & 3 or Nintendogz returns Crying or Very sad The thought of it just makes me wanna sell my Wii Shocked

Yeah, come on US & Europe. Buy every copy you can find & lets make sure it sells well

yes buy them all! I preordered my Mari Galaxy for Ł24 delivered. Not a bad price.

Nintendo are in front live with it!!
And I really hope your xbox's all blow up in your grandmothers faces!!

A fanboy speaks. Personally, i couldn't careless for hardware manufactures because as another member points out: each company just want your money, and don't really give two s**ts about the consumer.

Only a pinhead would support one (or) more of these firms.
