We can't think of a game from the last 12 months that has made us smile as much as Super Mario Galaxy. Whether it's the utterly charming barks of bouncing Chain Chomps, the whimsical banter of the cutesy space bees or the downright awesome flights from one exploding planet to another, Super Mario Galaxy oozes charm and guarantees to please almost anyone.
Galaxy's use of the Wii Remote is flawless as it doesn't make the mistake of throwing motion control in your face. The game simply wouldn't be as fun without it. Things like firing a cannon is a lot more intuitive using the Wii Remote, but the most obvious utilisation of the controller is the cursor, which you can dart around the screen at all times to collect Starbits (used to unlock several 'mini-game' galaxies) and them fire them back at the screen using the B trigger.
The main means of interaction in Galaxy is through shaking the Remote, which executes Mario's new spin attack. Punch and kick moves have been axed for this new means of interaction, which makes sense, as it's incorporated in the gameplay for tasks like activating cannon-like launch stars and swinging up vines. Thankfully it's not just another example of dodgy Wii 'waggle'.
Grapple stars are perhaps the most brilliant example of Galaxy's Wii Remote use. Using the remote cursor you simply aim and press A to home Mario in on the stars, allowing you to 'grab' and hop between lines of them like grapple points, all the while dodging space mines and projectiles. It's incredibly satisfying and is the set-up for some fantastic racing sequences later on.
Galaxy also plays around with gravity and physics like no Mario game before it. You'll flip gravity to navigate giant block mazes, use a planet's gravity to propel yourself to a new platform and shoot into the stars. It's not as revolutionary as Mario 64, but it certainly re-defines what we expect from a 3D platformer.
The concept of running around giant spheres can be daunting at first; if there's no pulsating black hole underneath your planet, falling off the edge just doesn't come into the equation. Without the pulling power of the black holes, no matter where you run or jump gravity will twist and pull you towards the planet, allowing you to run all the way around it and even jump to other planets by hopping into their gravitational pull. It's awesome.
If you're on a flat, orbiting platform you can run right underneath it, which opens up all kinds of gameplay that would be impossible under Mario 64's laws of gravity - and allows the scale of Mario's playgrounds to grow to genuinely draw-dropping proportions.
Shooting off into the stratosphere in one of Galaxy's many willy-waving cinematic moments, there were actual gasps at the beauty and scale of the starry world around us. The void-ish nature of Galaxy's world means Nintendo has been able to spend polygons liberally on the environment and it's easily the most draw-dropping game on Wii. And yes, we do mean draw-dropping.
Just like Mario 64 the game takes place in a hub world, this time around a starship headed up by space-age princess Rosalina and her race of Lumas (they're the little star blokes). Predictably, the Lumas need you to get collect stars to get their ship up and running again so you can chase down the star-bound Bowser. There are 120 to collect - many hidden - and it'll take you about as long as '64 to collect them all (and that's a good few hours).
After the disappointingly similar environments of Sunshine there's thankfully a much larger variety of worlds this time around too. Amazingly, despite the fact there are now only three "story" stars to collect per world, Galaxy's playgrounds aren't all pint-sized either (although there are one-off "platforming" worlds - which are rock hard and bloody brilliant).
We were delighted to find that the majority are as big - if not larger - than the locales of Mario 64, and unlike Sunshine many will make you smile like the time you first dived into the pirate cove in Mario 64.
It's a consistently surprising experience and we wouldn't dare spoil it for you, but Galaxy will take you places that will remind you why you play videogames.
One world we will speak about (because you've probably already seen it several times) is the bee Galaxy, where Mario finds one of the game's many transformations and becomes Bee Mario.
After Sunshine we thought Nintendo wouldn't ever be able to add new characters and environments to Mario without them feeling out of place, but Galaxy has thankfully proven us wrong. The buzzers and honeycomb world of the bee Galaxy are some of most charming we've seen in a long time, and we absolutely demand that the bees crop up in more Mario adventures.
It's a perfect example of how Nintendo doesn't need to re-write (all) the rules to make a fresh-feeling 3D platformer. As Bee Mario you can fly upwards for several seconds, step on flower platforms and climb honeycomb walls. Touch water however and you'll instantly transform into regular fat Mario - so you can imagine the fun when Nintendo's level designers come in and slap waterfalls and lakes all over the place.
But Galaxy's real success is in its ability to surprise, which it does consistently from start to finish. Just when you think Nintendo's out of ideas you're blasted off to another world that's even crazier and more creative than the last.
When Mario launches off at eruption-point from the surface of an orbiting Volcano, jetting into the stars with starbits dancing at his feet, we dare any fan of videogames not to crack a smile. And at a time when gamers are shelling out 400 quid for the "next-gen" experience, it's incredibly refreshing that the Wii can still offer some truly amazing gaming moments.
Nintendo said all along that it went for gameplay over graphics with Wii. But with Mario Galaxy it got both perfect. Not only is Galaxy a worthy successor to one of the best games ever made, but it's one of the most entertaining platform games we've ever played.
This is so exciting. I'm about to finish Paper Mario and was going to start Metroid, but i'm thinking of skipping Metroid and getting on with this awesome thing. I can't wait!!!!!
I really hope this sells well so Nintendo continue creating proper games.
Im still not 100% convinced - cant wait to some feedback from some of you lot. Thats when I'll get it
It's great!!! Wait... I haven't gotten it yet
On Nov 15th I'm gonna go home, switch off the phone, turn off all lights and pretend I'm not home and sit in front of the Wii. I just hope Nintendo put Mario music in and not rock music like what is in Sonic. I have to play Sonic through my tinny TV speakers because I hate the music so much You can turn it down during the game but the intro and level completion music still kicks in
Hopefully this will be the turning point for the so far shockingly disappointing graphics of current Wii titles (I'm ignoring shoddy motion control because I think Godfather did it great).
But I'll also be waiting to hear if it's actually worth replaying once you've been through it. Although that said, Mario 64 kept me entertained for countless hours back in the day.
I hope this gives me that warm childlike feeling at christmas like M64 and Ocarina did. Not felt like that for a while and Gamecubes efforts, although good, didn't have that affect on me...
Even if this game does turn out to be as amazing as CVG has put it, I'm sure it must still at least have one downer, every game does (even if it's just a small frustration issue on a small little bit it still counts).
Also, why are people saying the 15th when this game comes out on the 16th? Unless Nintendo have pulled the release date by a day that no one else knows about
I'm so glad I work in Virgin, when the shipment comes in I might just have to persuade my boss to let me take a copy home early ^_^ Now all we need is brawl.
been playing this for bit more than a week now can only say..absolutly amazing, brilliant enginuity and flawless incorporation of what made m64 the game of (atleast) last century. There are some moments when you feel let down and confused (e.g first time you run AROUND the planet and up gets down etc ) ..but there is just so much so much more that makes up for it and really pushes it on and away anyone not willing to give this a try..shame on you for wasting your time on some other game when this is available.
I'll be getting this, Metroid Prime 3 and Zelda DS on the same day...Oh wait! Assassin's Creed will also be arriving that day too! Gonna be even more broke than I am now
Also seeing the Foo Fighters that weekend so it I don't know how I'm gonna fit it all in!!
Tempting to grab a Wii this year for this and Metroid Prime 3 but with so many great games available on 360 im going to wait until sometime next year, when hopefully Nintendo come to their senses and have a price drop.
Ok, well gonnabuy this for my Wii but I noticed that CVG put no downers on this game? - There must be a few like replay value? Oh and I thought this was 2 player?? Is Luigi playable????????
Oh well, looks like im gonna have to find out for my self lol....
This looks great, but it's still gonna have to take more than two or three AAA games to convince me.
I'm still asking myself the same question: What happens once the usual suspect franchises are exhausted? Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart? There are plenty left potentially, but Pilot Wings, F Zero, Star Wing and loads of other games in need of an update seem nowhere to be seen. Also how about some new IP for the "hardcore" and not just virtual petting zoos?
Good old Mario!!! Just when you need a few good games to get people to dust off their wii's you can always rely on the old plumber!
Here's a little request for Nintendo though! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't make this the only Mario platformer on Wii like the last generations of nintendo consoles! Once upon a time there was numerous Mario platformers on their consoles i.e the Nes and SNES. These days we get but one per generation! Much as I love Mario Kart and Mario sports titles I really want a whole heap more platformers!!
I have the Japanese version and it really is a superb game. the level design is excellent, the visuals are very lush and it is so much fun. Trust me get a Wii just for this little gem.
i was realy worried about this game, because it didnt lure me in when I saw the footage at Game Developer Conference this year. Im not big into space/sci fi, and all the footage took place in space. Seeing that there are actual worlds to explore, it gives it more depth. These screenshots gave me N64 nostalgia. I'll be picking this one up.
the amount of times i have questioned my decision to buy a wii at launch and then this. metroid and mario landing within 2 weeks of each other has really put the wii in a different light.add in 32 player online medal of honour,16 player mario kart, online FF,wii ware(soldier blade R? yes please),smash brothers,no more heroes, monster hunter 3,etc... IT'S ALIVE!!! drought on the wii? what game drought? here's a thought: how many nintendo home consoles have had mario, zelda AND metroid within a year after launch?
I had been holding off buying a Wii due to the lack of decent games. I have been getting more and more excited about Mario Galaxy the more I have been reading and now I can't wait. It's my bday this month so I'm going to treat myself on my payday and buy a Wii and Mario. Feels weird, but it doesn't feel right buying a new Nintendo console and not having a Mario game to play on it straight away.
And why does everyone suddenly diss Mario Sunshine? I loved that game! Ok it was never going to top m64, but it always had me smiling, and I grinned from ear to ear when I got to ride Yoshi in 3d. Anyone that says that Sunshine doesn't feel like Mario needs to go and play it again, and spend extra time on the "secret" retro platform levels - some of the hardest and most satisfying 3d platform levels I have ever played. Hell, they made me wish for a whole game just filled with those (fingers still crossed).
My Wii was collecting dust before I bought SMG. I was using it for retro games. Would of bought Metroid but it has not been released in Japan yet. Now I have SMG, Ghost Squad and will get Nights next month.
Its nice that I am actually buying games for my Wii and not just 360 and DS.

A worthy sequel to Mario 64? Crap..now I have to get a Wii. I doubt it'll be used for anything else.
Get Metroid Prime 3 aswell controls are excellent, it just shows that the wii is the console for fps.
agreed. i've already pointed this out in another thread but i'm dreading cod4 turning up for the 360 this week, twin sticks and auto aim are for the casual gamers with NO skill (check halo 3 out,you can't even turn auto aim off). HD or not i'd prefer most fps' on the wii over my 360. f**k graphics, even poor games look good these days,i just don't want the 'comp' placing my bullets for me and on formats other than the pc that's what happens.
This is Nintendo's Halo: a bewilderingly strong brand for what is actually a rather unremarkable game.
have you finished it already!? lucky bugger! i've got to wait until next week to even PLAY it. it's nice to see the words 'mario' and 'rock hard' in the same review. as hard as the (godlike) fluddless void levels from 'sunshine, cvg?
I have been waiting for this game to come for 10 long years since I completed Mario 64, a game that actually matches the greatness and out does every other platform game in existence and perhaps the holy grail of Platform games all others will scratch and melt in the presence of this fantastic game, roll on the 16th!
Hmmmm is Halo not MS's Mario as opposed to the other way round.
But that is nonsense...despite some wayward offshoots...the core Mario experience has been rarely far below sublime...even the anticlimactic Mario Sunshine still had a lot of quality.
I was never blown away by Halo... but I could see it had polish and quality. A lot of people have pointed out PC FPS that they feel exceed the quality of H3 to some extent. I don't know really it's not my genre.
Where as I don't think there has ever been a realistic challenger to Mario's dominance.
Probably because that would imply perfection and it would set the forums alight with hate posts aginst CVG and Mario and whinging that Halo (or whatever other loved game) didn't get a 10 as well.
Actually on that issue it raises a point about the concistency of CVG's ratings, Halo 3 got a 9.7 but had a couple of downers listed one of which was about the really short single player mode which I would have thought should count against it quite significantly, Mario Galaxy doesn't have any listed (although I'm pretty sure you could nit-pick at something) so how is it marked lower?
Not to mention that Ratched & Clank was measured the same. And I'm sorry, but even if they made that game twice as good as the original I don't think it would scale up. But just my opinion.
EDIT: It wasn't rated the same, but only 2% lower. Mario >>>>>>> Ratchet
Mario Galaxy! I've seen so much of this game I can hardly belive it hasn't been released yet. This will be another must own Wii game to add to the keeps collection.

I agree. Super Mario Galaxy will join my keeps collection, making it... 2 games strong. Super Paper Mario is the other. At least amidst the deluge of awful Wii software we can still count on Mario.
I don't like Mario games. Is there something wrong with me?
Depends. If you don't like the Sports/Party spinoffs that's fine. If you don't like Mario 64 or Sunshine that's fine. However, if you dislike the ones from the NES/SNES/GB or any of the Kart or Paper variety, then yes, I fear there may be something wrong with you. I hate Mario 64 with a passion and Sunshine was awful too, but Galaxy will be the one to turn it all around for 3D Mario games, I know it!
I've got a busy week ahead if I'm to get through Ratchet & Clank, CoD4, The Simpsons and the new Sam & Max before Galaxy and Creed (that's what we call them in the ghetto). Dammit games, stop being so good! No, wait, stay just as good but release less frequently! No wait... actually, nothing, it's fine.
I hope you're right falloutwarchief. Mario 64 put me completely of Mario games for LONG time. Hopefully this will make me finally start to like the overweight plumber again.
ok ok, I've decided I need to set a strict routine;
Complete The Witcher by the end of next week, Play Galaxy at my leisure until Christmas Get metroid for Christmas Complete before the release of Assassins Creed for the PC and Smash Brothers on the Wii.
+ Fit in TF2 time in between - we all need to unwind after all
I need to stick that garden gnome in space at some point as well...
Any 1 thats dised my mum yea suk ya dead great gran through ya dads batty crease rude boy.
Ahem. Dear sir, regarding your mother: I had sex with her. And I care not a jot for your half-baked opinions. And by the way, it's "Paedo", or "pedo", but never "peedo".
EDIT: I'm sorry, I forgot "Do not feed the trolls", but he was so irresistable. Caring about what strangers say about his mother, indeed!
All of you lot make me sick, Mario sucks dick and is a peedo, childish game i want my kids to be brought up on games like Doom, Condemed Quake, Jerico and Call of Duty , they way by the time he is in his teens he will be wanting to shoot the f**k out of the priks that play mario and do stupid f**king noises.
Any 1 thats dised my mum yea suk ya dead great gran through ya dads batty crease rude boy.
braaap braaap. big up the 360, PC and PS3 mandem.
See this is the reason why some parents should start suing condom companies. Clearly his folks have been exposed to the dreaded condom breakage
His grasp of the language is absolutely terrible. I wouldn't dream of insulting your parents however, clearly they have suffered enough with the presence of you.
What a strong mature comment. Maybe people would give a toss about what you said if you actually had any intelligence to put your point across in a less arrogant way.

To play as a fat italian plumber is no reason to buy a wii(a rip off).Do yourself a favour buy CALL OF DUTY4 or something
already have, clocked on veteran. now i'm playing galaxy and am i glad? indeed,it's(forgive the americanism) awesome. the best nintendo game since ocarina. miyamoto's back.
Just thought I'd come back to comment on my last post where I was hoping Mario Galaxy would redeem the series after the, in my opinion, crap-so-far 3D Mario games. It has. Super Mario Galaxy is an absolutely excellent game that I have enjoyed every minute of in my first 8 hours or so playing it. It's a top-notch piece of entertainment software and the first Wii game deep and engaging enough to make me forget I'm playing the Wii.
Along with Assassin's Creed, it is one of the first games in ages where I've had trouble putting the controller down. You just keep wanting to play one more mission, one more level... My weekend was non-stop gaming goodness between AC and SMG (including an accidental all-night session on Saturday - what? 5:20am?! That can't be right! ). I highly, highly recommend both to anyone and everyone.
