Here they are - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare side by side for the first time. Since we posted a bunch of in-game movies from direct from the Xbox 360 retail code this morning, we've had numerous emails asking about the PS3 version.

how the hell u supposed to tell the diffrence, (if there is any?) on those little crappy clips!?... haha, no doubt people will see what they want to see! & the fanboy war will commence!...
If you even want to do any realistic comparisons then you would need to be looking at 720p footage. To be quite honest though, multi-format games always look near identical with the PS3 version sometimes loosing out in the framerate and AA department.
Considering there wont' be any problems with the online side of things on the 360 and the pad is better for FPS, i'll go for that, thanks. I'm not playing on some stupid micro-pad for no reason. I dont' care if the PS3 can render 4 more droplets of rain or has more bump mapping on wall 465 than the 360, they both look good enough, but the 360 will be better online, and that's where CoD 4 will really shine, as stunning as the campaign will be.
PS3 won that battle, it looked alot more realistic than the 360, PS3 has the true power, its only been out a year and look how much power its got already, XBOX 360 is nice but its not great.
I will admit at a first glance they look identical. but going into thorough replays etc. Ill will tell my own opinion.
When watching i noticed how 360 lagged more than Ps3. Not saying Ps3 is perfect cos that lagged aswell. But it just seems to flow more easily. The lighting and shading really shines on the Ps3, but the shadow effects etc go to 360.
Overall its tough choice. So ill say both are equal. Its just what taste you have.
Pointless trying to do a comparison on a tiny resolution clip. It should be HD and it should be Quicktime H.264. Is a much better codec for this sort of thing.
So go away and re-post this as it should be. Thanks
right i noticed the ps3 trailer looked smoother for example the guy with the helmet on in the door of the black hawk had a smooth helmet and the xbox version it seemed abit jagged also the ps3 version does seem to have more clarity in most of everything lol but i have to hand it to both because they both look realy damn good but to be honest am gonna buy the ps3 version simply because i beleive that it looks better
ive watched it a few times and the differnces are so small its hardly worth mentioning. weather one machine is more powerful or not is still to be seen i think, all i can say is i hope there is no jerkiness like cod3. now all i have to do is wait for the dam game to come out and to stop teasing myself with videos..........
hehe. Funny how the PS3 fanboys trying to convince themselves there is even any difference, from low quality clips, since this is the biggest game available on PS3 this year, and its multi-format... Go check out other sites where they have HD video footage and then make your mind up. Personally I think they look exactly the same to me but like I said before, Infinity Ward seem to have put more attention towards the 360 version with the exclusive BETA and most likley the PS3 version will suffer the same problems of other multi-format games such as a lower framerate and a lack of AA. Either way, its a great game and a welcome change from the WWII setting. I doubt it will live upto everyones expectations with a 6 hour campaign and a lack of co-op. Still, the multiplayer will keep people busy long enough...

lol in your dreams - both look perfectly identical, no slowdown at all. The only difference is that PS3 version has more 'rain' which is not important.

(At the risk of opening up the floodgates to peoples' stupid, incessant lists...) Just because you say it doesn't make it so. And for someone who often seems to enjoy declaring other people fanboy you often tend to come across as one yourself.
This while 360vsPS3 thing is getting a little tiresome. Looking at these videos can see no difference whatsoever, they aint even in sinc so the whole more rain on one thing is a bit of a moot point. I personally own a 360 and a PC and have no intention of getting a PS3 in the near future for the main reason that not a single game out now or due for release has any appeal. The current 360 catalogue is great but the up and coming games like Mass Effect and Assasins Creed are pretty excitig. There is not one PS3 only game out now or due for release that would make me want to pay the asking price for a PS3.

MAN,hope you are not serious about "PS3 version has more rain" difference, just wandering is it posible to tell?

I'm not the only one who notices. At the beginning of first video in helicopter, look more carefully.
Some mags are giving the PS3 version a little plus ,like 1Up that gave it a 0.1 over the 360 version or Game Zone that gave it a 0.4 over the 360 version .For the screens provided is difficult to tell ,but seeing as the PS3 version in IGn was reviewed by the 360 staff and they didnt even invent one of their nasty remarks I think in this game the PS3 version is somewhat above the 360 one .Slighty ,buy above ...
Oh ,and after the IGN review the game had the same level in online playing ....so much for paying Bill Gates for this .
So ,without having to pay to play online and with a little plus over the 360 version on the tech side I think the PS3 version is the one to have between the two .

Like I said, it is not important.
You sire just cost me 80Ł,since im going to buy the PS3 version, and my first choice purchase the 360 version.
I like me games dark and moody. the 360's superior shadow effects makes it have that Gears of War feel to it. plus the online, and gamepad on the 360 are a plus. I played my last ever game on the PS3 online, and no more for me. hardly anyone has a Headset of Mic on the Playstation Network, its so boring.
plus the 360 version will be cheaper and it will have Achievements too. which is always nice when your mates can see what you've gone inside the game.
but all this shows is that the PS3 isn't worth anymore money than the Xbox 360. in fact buying the PS3 has so far been a waste of time for me. because I can play any PS3 game "I want" on the 360? however I'm keeping the PS3 for Singstar. but so far the PS3 has been crap!
come on ffs they are almost identical but are you reli gonna notice stuff like rain when you are running around getting shot at. to tell the truth i want the PS3 version to be better but there is hardly any difference, it is still the same game and i sure waheva console you get it for its gonna b good, in the first trailer i thought that the PS3 had better textures and lighting effects but onli briefly and then the video started skipping on my comp and some of those freeze frames seemed a bit sharper on the 360 cant we just enjoy the games on.
o.k., i agree this comparison needs to be done at 720p, but the only difference I see is that the outside of the taxi cab in clip #2 looks more jaggie on the PS3 as it's approached. otherwise they look identical.
Also, why does everyone expect online to be better on the xbox? I've had no problems with PS3 games online (e.g. Warhawk)...and the online is free.

I love the PS3 as a piece of quality hardware. Admittedly, I've was playing PS2 games until Warhawk, Ratchet, Everyday Shooter, and Stardust came along, but I DO love the Blu-Ray...even though you have to switch video output on a 720p TV. It's far from being "crap."
Does anybody remember that song 'Everyone's a wally', from pyjamarama? I think 'Everyone's a fanboy' may be apt. Anybody who posts on these forums is a fanboy, no matter what your personal preference is. Yes even YOU.
Looks the bloody same. Who cares?? I cancelled my Gold membership ages ago though, it being a complete waste of money, so it looks like it may be the PS3 version for me. Actually no, I'll prob end up getting it for the PC instead, the price being Ł10 - Ł20 cheaper.
sorry, but i saw very little difference in the two...the PS3 looked slightly better on the first video, because you could see the guys helmet better in the helicoptor(but that lasted less than a few seconds)
but other than that...any arguements over the graphics comparison for ps3 and 360 is just plain dumb, which ever version you get it will look great
i have both machines but will be buying it for 360,i prefer playing my onlinegames on xbox live and the single player achievements make another good reason(although not a necessity)
and for the few who have mentioned that it will look even better on PC....i should bloody hope so,the amount of money you have to spend on a pc just to keep up to date with the graphics cards etc!!..whereas PS3 and 360,you buy the console and you dont have to worry for 4-5 years
PC/360/PS3 call of duty 4 looks great...end of story
Even if you get rid of the arguments over which version has a few more drops of rain & the online the 360 version is still better simply because the controller is much more suited to playing these types of games the Dual shock / six axis design is just crap for FPS games
I will say however that on closer inspection the colors on the ps3 do look a little richer and the picture a littl sharper, and in fact much better than the Xbox version all together, ok so I am a fanboy, big deal!!!!
Seriously though, the colors do look a little richer, look at the cigar.
As a PC gamer I couldn't give a toss which is better, but I see higher texture definition on the 360 there. Look at the dials on the dash, particularly the speedo, and the center console. Sharper/more detailed on the 360. The texture also goes slightly further into the distance on the 360 when you see the paving as well, implying better anisotropic filtering.
since this is the biggest game available on PS3 this year, and its multi-format...

ideal just ignore this guy man, like you say he's a total fanboy.
im sure this is assuming you have a HDMI for your 360(Elite) since whenever i play a game with my component HD cable, the picture is rubbish compared to the superior HDMI cable. Since most people don't own a 360 capable of this im sure the PS3 is better. Personally i'll be getting this for my pc anyway.
They looked identical graphically, as was mentioned above the rain is a nul topic due to syncing. The other thing i did notice though is that the PS3 version was more "zoomed in" than the 360. In the helicopter look at the chappy in the door, to the right of the SAS captain. He looks closer in the PS3 than the 360. Aside from that no difference.
Just buy it on whatever you've got and enjoy it. If your happy with it that's the main thing. I was perfectly happy playing games on the NES, still am. Its all about the gameplay.
PS3 won that battle, it looked alot more realistic than the 360, PS3 has the true power, its only been out a year and look how much power its got already, XBOX 360 is nice but its not great.
LOL wow this "guy" is the definition of fanboy! Another poor dumb kid who actually thinks the PS3 is more powerful. I guess I would too if I paid $600 for a game console with no games one year ago.
I'll tell you what is funny. Your all bitching over the tinyiest amount of detail when its plain obvious it dont matter. The Wii is loads crappier in this department but is trampling the competition. What makes this game is the on-line. The campaign for a regular player on normal takes 3-4 hours (it can be done loads faster). The 360 kicks the ps3 so far out of its own ps3 home crud in this respect its unreal. I own all three consoles + pc. Back to mario galaxy which as a 1 player game kicks the pants off anything the 360 and ps3 have. LOL at your "rain" arguements. Ever heard of enjoying a game?
And by the way... Power to the people. Lets see which console gets more on-line play.... (Thinking of selling my what was Ł500 brick and buying some decent games!!!!!!)
Check the style...Let's be honest here for a minute...EVERYONE! You fan boys trip me out with all this girly "ps3 have this RAH! RAH! xbox 360 have that YEAH! YEAH!"(Oh, and notice I wrote ps3 and xbox 360 all in lower case letters. You fan boys tend to write your system of choice all in CAPS). Both games look great and the fact that you can't really see any difference is amazing. The ps3 ver. has a bit more rain drops...OR...Maybe the xbox 360 ver. color is a tad darker and you really can't tell that the xbox 360 ver. has the same amount of rain drops as its ps3 counter part...Its possible. But one thing tha's clear is that if you look closey in the chopper scene when the lightening struck, the xbox 360 ver. actually had the effect glowing of the troops. The ps3 had none at all and wouldn't call that realistic fan boys. If everone just step back for a minute and look at the game itself, you would see that this a great looking game on any system. They both run 60 fps so I the bothe versions run at the same frame rate. It's things like this when fanboys see what they want to see.
they both look exactly the same..the PS3 seems to have slightly better particle effects (as in rain, smoke..)..but other than that, the graphical quality is identical, not to mention the smoothness as well, which was also identical.
one thing though , the PS3 did seem to have more anti aliasing issues than the 360 version. It is pretty amazing to see that the PS3 (which is younger than the 360) can already compare to the 360 which has been out for much longer.
However you have to remember that cross platform games are always pretty much identical. If you really want to see how good the PS3 look at a dedicated game like Uncharted or MGS4..then find a game on the 360 which looks the same or better.
Those videos are near useless for discerning the differences between both games as they run in a small window which has some 12X less pixels than the actual 720p footage. GameTrailers.com are usually much better at showing this kind of thing as they post proper HD 720p videos.
Based on those videos though, both versions look so much alike that any differences are irrelevent in the grand scheme of things. I own both a 360 and PS3 and was initially wary of buying it for the latter platform after the abysmal PES 2008 (I ended up swapping it for the 360 version which runs so much better ingame). I then read that the devs claimed the PS3 was better than the 360 version but, ultimately, it wasn't the graphics that made me pre-order the 360 version, it was the fact that that console has, in my opinion, a better controller for FPSs (plus it has rumble out of the box, something I feel adds immersion to these kinds of games). I think the SIXAXIS' loose, ill-placed analogue sticks and weak triggers make FPSs less enjoyable on that platform but that's not to say I didn't enjoying playing Resistance or anything; just that I'd have preferred to use the 360 controller for the game.
Should be getting my copy of the game this morning as GAME sent it yesterday.
Also, why does everyone expect online to be better on the xbox? I've had no problems with PS3 games online (e.g. Warhawk)...and the online is free.
I take it you haven't played GRAW2 online or PES08 then?? And when they first released warhawk i could hardly get into any servers but thankfully they have all now been fixed and i dont get any bother. At the moment the 360 offers a better service but you pay for it. If sony decided to charge money for online play it would need a drastic overhaul to be worth it. Im getting the PS3 version as i dont have a 360 but it's clear to me that the 360 version got far more attention in development, where was the PS3 beta or matter of fact where's the special edition that looks awesome on the PS3? Maybe it'll be a different story late next year when developers can quickly and properly optimise games for the PS3 but by then i think this console debate will be long over. The PS3 was always going to have a strong 2008 but there needs to be far more exclusive titles to make it worth a purchase to most people.
P.S. If you want to see decent quality footage of the game on both platforms then check out GameTrailers.com's 720p video review, don't use CVG's near useless ones.
You can tell which version is which by the button prompts and D-pad icon on the HUD (to the left at the bottom of the screen). Both look identical visually to me and it was only when I watched it a second time that I realised it was showing footage from two formats!!!

All in all they are both pretty much identical
We will, when either of those games actually makes it to release! By which point there will be equally good games out on other formats that will compete.
Why does everyone insist that the format they own is the best, if you don't own a system, why bitch about it's supposed shortcomings? You don't see people doing the same with cars, TV's or anything else for that matter.
All the PS3-Fanboy crap going on makes me ashamed I own a ps3. seriously, do 80% of the PS3-owners skipped everything after elementary school? I think the videos look absolutely identical (in this resolution at least). There may be one or two more camera shakes, when the player is carried to the car in the ps3-version, but thats definetly not a console-power thing. The subtitles look a little different ^^. I have both 360 and ps3, but I think I'm going with the ps3-version here because I dont pay extra for multiplayer.
first of all i'd like to say that there is NO difference between both versions worth being mentioned.who cares about four raindrops of rain?(if anyone can make it out in this lowres vids).those ps3 fanboys only realize because it's the first real "game" on their machine.it is up to the developers if a multiplatform title looks different on any system. personally i prefer the 360 version cuz' of controller, xbox live and achievements, although you have to PAY for online.but it's definitely more worth to pay for playing online than for a ps3.if you bought a 360 instead of a ps3 you would have money left to pay for xbox live (by the way 60€ a year doesn't seem that out of proportion. only 5€ a month...).plus you have the option to play against pc guys.this is how things really are (remember these prerendered movies at E3 in 2005?).where are the groundbreaking graphics?it has nothing to do with the release of the consoles!the developers got the dev kits of ps3 and 360 at THE SAME TIME!fact of the matter is that the ps3 is harder to code than 360 due to its processor.
The PS3 Version has some serious anti-aliasing problem when you see the characters get in the car! Apart from that I can't tell any difference although I admit it is a very small video and they may look different on a high def setup. I find it amazing that some people appear to think that one version looks much better than the other!
cant be assed to read all the posts. i have both machines and will buy the ps3 version as i have a frag fx keyboard and mouse and i rock online with all the suckers with their joypads i will also buy the 360 version so i can play online with all my xbox mates.
I cat believe people are arguing over a bit more rain (which i cant see TBH )
IMO unless you have only got a PS3 or have a mouse & keyboard for it - like roger - then the 360 will be a better bet. Better online structure & superior FPS pad & cheaper price point will be a better deal than the PS3 version. Also there are achievements on 360 which add replayability to some games for some people.
Does the PS3 version support a mouse and keyboard though? I know Unreal Tournament 3 will but I've heard nothing in respect of CoD 4.
And to end this arguement once and for all about which is the best version... it's the PC one, of course... better graphics (I ran the demo smoothly at max. detail at 1680x1050 with 2X AA on my setup), mouse and keyboard support for definite, free maps courtesy of the mod community and 32 players online not the 18 of the PS3/360 versions.
From the horse's mouth so to speak... this is what an Infinity Ward programmer had to say about the PS3 and 360 versions:
"There are minor visual differences between the 360 and PS3 versions, due to the platforms being extremely different from an architectural standpoint. This results in us having to make different tradeoffs on both platforms to hit our framerate targets. They're very nearly identical, but you'll be able to pick screenshots in which both versions are "clearly" the better version. They're as close as we could make them without going completely batcrap insane (though whether or not we are already completely batcrap insane is a matter of some debate.)
Tradeoff example: Shadow filtering. We use different techniques on PS3 and 360 to filter shadow edges, which gives them a bit of a different look. I think it's a matter of taste as to which way looks better, but we did it that way because it was the most efficient way to do it on both platforms that yielded a look that was good enough."
I don't think there's anything else to say really, is there...
... except the PS3 version does not, I repeat NOT, support the mouse and keyboard, nor does it support rumble via the Dualshock 3 (I guess it could be patched though although the post makes it sound like they aren't planning to do that).
I don't care about graphics. It's the pad that is the difference. Why would i want to play on a pad which was designed over 10 years ago with rubbish loose misplaced analouge sticks, inside out triggers and no vibration. The pad makes such a difference, feeling the weight of the 360 pad shaking in your hands as you pull down on them smooth triggers and let rip with a massive gun beats the PS3's featherlight piece of crap any day.
I'd take that kind of immersion over slight graphical differences any day.
It would seem that decision as to which console version to buy (apart from the controller differences) is which one has the best-looking shadows in your opinion.
the 360 controller is better, though i never had any bother playing CoD3 on ps3.
live is better than PSN, but only for content. online matches in warhawk are perfect. plus its free, which should mean more people to play against since it doesnt discriminate between a silver or gold system.
i have a ps3, 50" 1080p HDTV and HDMI cable, and from what i gather from different sites ps3 has the edge on graphics... wonder what it runs like in 1080p?
Yeah fair enough. The 360 will still have more people to play against as its gold membership rate is higher than the actual amount of people who own a PS3 last time I heard
feeling the weight of the 360 pad shaking in your hands as you pull down on them smooth triggers and let rip with a massive gun beats the PS3's featherlight piece of crap any day.
I actually find the rumble on my 360 pad a bit annoying. It works fine for machine gunning but the problem is that I mainly play as a sniper. When I shoot a 50cal I want an abrupt kick not some sh1tty brrrrrrr sound. Until they can sync it better I would rather go without. However, it does work ok for the vibration in driving games IMO but just not for shooters.
Having digested all of the ramblings above, I would absolutely laugh my c0ck off if CVG had switched the labels on the footage. So the PS3 one is really the 360 one and vice versa.
Oh my God. Those pictures prove that the PlayStation 3 is much more powerful than the Xbox 360!
look, one got in before me.....
Dont you get irony? I even put an exclamation mark! Now i understand the point of the smilies... for nerds who are lacking in social interaction skills and unable to interpret human behaviour and words.
Haha to those sad enough to be looking at which console has the most rain. Both are virtually identical, but if you look closely at the "extra" rain in the PS3 video, it is falling *through* the helicopter roof... ummm
feeling the weight of the 360 pad shaking in your hands as you pull down on them smooth triggers and let rip with a massive gun beats the PS3's featherlight piece of crap any day.

Thought you gave up on the 360 after your 3rd one fried itself?
doubt that mate. at least i can play all my REAL LIFE mates, instead of geeks who have all subscribed to a gold service, that i dont dont even know, with stupid call centre mics strapped to their heads, giving out orders as if they are sergeant majors when in reality they are nerdy bastards.

Seriously though, the colors do look a little richer, look at the cigar.
And then look at the smoke effect on the 360 version when he blows it out.....Much better on the 360...
i thought the PS3 was twice as powerful as the 360 how come the games dont look twice as good they look worse most of the time
when the 360 was released SONY took the p**s by saying it was only a xbox 1.5.....but then when it came to sony releaseing the PS3 it turned out that it was only a little bit more powerful than the 360...so little more power, that most times you wont notice the difference in multiplatform titles
and lesbiana...when you want to post Irony or sarcastic remarks..you have to put that exclamation mark in brackets..like so..(!)...what you put just made it like you were making your point
its unbeliveable!<<<like that, thats not irony or sarcasm, its in a way highlighting something thats been said
the only slight difference i saw was in the clip at night in the aircraft. with the ps3 version you can see the guy crouching nearest the door better. But who really cares bout the ps3 one bein brighter
Considering there wont' be any problems with the online side of things on the 360 and the pad is better for FPS, i'll go for that, thanks. I'm not playing on some stupid micro-pad for no reason. I dont' care if the PS3 can render 4 more droplets of rain or has more bump mapping on wall 465 than the 360, they both look good enough, but the 360 will be better online, and that's where CoD 4 will really shine, as stunning as the campaign will be.
you have a point, but i'm sorry, they will be exactly the same online.
Honestly, it is fine with these comparing videos, but this game was not made to make the best of each console. I'm sure they made the game as good as they could, with as little difference between the two versions for faster conversion.
Take a good, proper PS3 game that AFTER release is determined to be made for the 360 too, and compare. Then the developers has tried to make the best out of the PS3, and we can see how they convert that to the 360.
I think it is sad to compare a game made at the same time for both platforms, as obviously they haven't tried to make it 100% 360 and 100% PS3, with seperate developing teams. Even some games that has different studios making each platform version, is still a lot of converting instead of independant programming in different directions.
I am not a fanboy. I prefer the PS3, because something in my likes that brand better, while I also prefer the game catalogue of 360 and the fact that developers find it easier to work with. I won't deny the PS3 might not be that much stronger, if I just see proper examples of it and not these multiplatform comparisons. What did you expect?
Arggggggggh confused which one to get-my MS fanboy side tells me to get it for the 360 but my SONY fanboy side tells me to get it for the ps3-might just by both of them just so I can moan on both sides of the forum . Seriously guys does it really matter!
I believe it will not be just the rain or the pot holes, it will probably have a little more detail on PS3, however from my personal experience the PS3 has a poor online service. When I say poor it's due to lack of voice chat on some games, and the lack of good servers. You get dropped in ranked games, your mic cuts out and the voice in general(with exception on RFOM) is inferior. Some games don't even keep up with your rank, it takes them 2 months to catch up ( expl. Warhawk) by that time you lose interest in playing since there is no gratification in the score. 360 has the online polished well. The lack of adequate online service for PS3 will make me buy it on 360, I wish PS3 would have a better online server because I have lots of friends on it. But the PS3 doesn't own their servers, its the games that control them. So in this case it will be COD4 servers
I think they look the same. But if you want to compara xbox and ps3 in general. PS3 is better. Maybe not now. But the fact that PS3 is more copmlicated, and this is not the best a PS3 system can do, PS3 will make Xbox lovers trash their consoles soon. Because thats the best xbox can do. xbox's system is easy and this is the best you can get out of it. By fall 2008 xbox will be history...
i don't think we will see much of a difference, with cross platform games between the two machines, why would any developer take the time to make the ps3 version look better, that would take more time and money, so all these cross platform games at the moment are pretty much being done at 360 level of graphical capability. playstation only games is where you will see the difference. it is the more powerfull machine, an 360 owners have a cheek saying, graphics are not important--that was the whole arguement about the first x-box being the better machine than ps2. who cares, its really boring this which machine is better, if i had the money i'd buy them all.
killzone2 is the best looking game i have seen so far on any platform, i don't own any of the next gen machines, cause i don't believe there are any games that really seem all that impressive on next gen(people are going to give me a big list of games here) that warrant me spending about 300 pounds or more for systems
hehe. Infinity Ward seem to have put more attention towards the 360 version with the exclusive BETA and most likley the PS3 version will suffer the same problems of other multi-format games such as a lower framerate and a lack of AA. Either way, its a great game and a welcome change from the WWII setting.
You have missed two very important factors, 1. COD4 was developed separately for the two consoles, therefore the AA and framerate limiting won't exist 2. You're lame
MICROSOFT IS BUILT FOR THE PC, MICROSOFT SHOULD STAY WITH WHAT THEY KNOW HOW TO DO BEST
