Bethesda cagey on MMO plans

We quiz the developer on recent speculation about an Elder Scrolls MMO
Bethesda is playing cards close to chest regards an MMO future for its Elder Scrolls RPG series, speculation on which has recently spread across the internet.

"We have a separate company, ZeniMax Online Studios, that's owned by our parent company, which has been set up to do MMOs but they aren't talking about what projects they're working on or what they're doing", Bethesda's VP of public relations and marketing, Pete Hines, told us yesterday during an office tour.

Speculation on an Elder Scrolls MMO was sparked earlier in the week after it emerged that Bethesda has registered the domain name elderscrollsonline.com. Yep, that'll do it.

"There's been a lot of speculation in the press recently about Elder Scrolls online...", we said, to which Hines responded, "It's [ZeniMax Online Studios] obviously a new shop, a new startup, and given that it's an MMO, I imagine it'll be quite a while before they start to talk about what they're doing."

Make of that what you will...

My first instinct is "If it's not broken, don't fix it." but then I swapped my cynical mirror shades for a pair of cheerful pink tinted ones.

What if, eh?

What if they managed it?

Imagine that.

It's worth a try, at least. Smile

I seriously hope they dont.
Too many devs are ditching epic singleplayers for online mutliplayer stuff. there is too much 'if it has no online its inferior to every -even mediocre- game with online in it' thinking now.

I love big singleplayer games. Im not the only one left surely?

Absolutely agree, Elder Scrolls games so far and KOTOR have to be so of my favourite ever (Monkey Island apart) and now they're both being talked up as future MMORPG's. No problem with them doing these as a separate entity but PLEASE keep producing the games that made the series so popular in the first place.

I couldn’t agree more. The Elder Scrolls games are my favourite now, and I would surly hate to lose them to some mindless mmo the way we lost the Ultimia sires.

I'm standing right there, shoulder to shoulder with you ... sure lets have online games, but not at the expense of great single player experiences.

I think ES converted to the usual MMO type game would be wank TBH, lets not beat around the bush.

I think it would have to stay in 1st person really. Also, i think if it's too heavily MMo'd it could ruin things.

The thought of oblivion with other players fighting alongside me is a very good one though, just imagine all riding through lush valleys on horseback together, that would be pretty amazing stuff.

I just hope they don't mess around with the formula too much.

I guess I'm the only person that thought that Oblivion felt like an MMO anyway, only without any other players around...
Personally, can't say I'd be disappointed, as long as the interface was like that of Oblivion.

Agreed, I do love my MMO's but epic single player games need to stay with us. Oblivion was a masterpeice and honestly hope if we do get an Elder Scrolls MMO that they still keep on with the single player games as well. I think diverstiy is the key. I like all sorts (I play PSU (dont hate me)), each differnt type of game has its pros and cons but i think nowadays people seem to think 'if it aint online it aint worth a purchase' well they wrong, so very wrong.

It's all about the money... MMO's *if done right* bring in heap loads of cash and that's what Oblivion online will be after, studio's 'ditch' single player thinking it's easy cash, it ain't and players are under a delusion that a game without MP is crap regardless, again, it ain't.

Technically they probably going to have to loose a lot of the 'nextGen' stuff for MMO performance purposes; online + 'nextGen' = kick in the goolies
