Only the other day, amidst the furore surrounding Gears of War and Unreal Tournament III, we were pondering whether Epic might have anything new afoot in the world of the Unreal FPS.
But, it appears not. Resurrection of the series which last graced the videogame world in Unreal II: The Awakening in 2003/04 just isn't something that's on the studio's radar at this moment in time.
We know this, because Epic's Mark Rein has said, "...there's definitely no plans right now for an Unreal 3 game", in a recent interview with Bi-tech.net.
Bummer. However, talking Epic future Rein did reveal the developer will support Unreal Tournament III post-release with "some map packs and so on later" and that that the studio will have new IPs. "...but not right now", he added.
The 1st 2 games were a bit weak really. Why bother continuing with a series that was never greatly loved? better to concentrate on what they do well and to create something new.
I am really, really not surprised after Legend and Epic managed to single handedly f**k up Unreal 2 to epic proportions.
1/The story was awful 2/They choose to do something I STILL have problems with... I object to any story that does what they did to try and inbue shock and an emotional response from a player. It sucks in movies, books and it sucks in games. (anyone who has reached the end knows what I mean) 3/ Every single DAMN thing they promised that was going to be cool was not there... 4/ Level design was meh 5/ Compared to Unreal it was all so, so dull... no sense of awe like that games first "outside" experience.
It was a total disappointment. Not even the GUNSfelt meaty. They belonged in Halo. (Assault rifle: By Mattel.)
So... if they ever DO an Unreal 3, they have some major groundwork to lay for it as a comeback.
Sorry guys but for those of you ripping the first unreal game to bits and saying that it was crap, I think you should sell your games machines and go and buy a leap frog system.
Unreal set new grounds when it first appeared. How many of us remember the first time you left the ship and looked over at the water fall? or looked at the reflections in the floor tiles? How you felt when you bumped into your first skaa monster?
Ok it's aged a little now and next to the likes of crysis, gears, UT3 and anything new it probably is a little on the ugly side.
As for Unreal II: well some nice bits and stuff but it was rushed out in the end. If they had taken more time over it then it would have been a much better game.
I for one would love to see a new unreal single player but please get a good script first.

Or the first time you saw it running on a 3DFX card
Man the first time i saw Unreal over 8 years ago i was amazed. My mate had one of those rare 3D acceleration cards and the thing looked amazing and was full of atmosphere so don't be dissing Unreal!
and the second one wasn't that bad. Varied levels, decent weapons, and it was not the kind of shooter you needed a storyline for.
But Unreal games were more or less engine tech demos rather then storyline/gameplay innovations. It would have made sense if Unreal 3 came out before any other games on that engine, people would have been like "wow, look at that".
