Alone in Dark confirmed for Wii, PS2

Revival of the granddaddy survival horror series creeps onto new platforms
PS2 and Wii have joined the platforms (PC, Xbox 360 and PS3) set to receive the new Alone in the Dark game from Atari.

So, PS2 and Wii versions are being developed by Hydravision (Eden Games is handling the other versions), and feature the same storyline as the previously announced outings for the revival of the venerable survival horror series.

Oh, the storyline? "...over the course of one apocalyptic night, hero Edward Carnby must uncover the earth-shattering secret hidden in New York's iconic Central Park."

According to Atari, PS2 and Wii versions of Alone in the Dark push respective hardware "hard", "incorporating many of the gameplay features found in the Xbox 360 version".

Wii version
Wii's Remote and Nunchuk are used to manipulate objects in real-time, and Atari's exec VP Mathias Hautefort says Alone in the Dark on Wii is "perfectly adapted to the gameplay thanks to the console's unique controllers."

Alone in the Dark first terrified us in 1992, and we've been eyeing the revival with some interest. Set in present day, we're being promised a "heart-stopping action survival experience". If it literally stops our hearts, we'll be suing from beyond the grave.

And we won't be alone...

So are they exactly the same game or slightly different? Seems odd to do a PS2 version if it will just be a graphically inferior version.

I was hoping this was going to be a straight up remake of the first. That would have been incredible. Instead its looking like a lifeless Silent Hill.

just confirms to me how week the wii is in graphical power when developers put it in the same boat as a 10 year old consol. ok, ok graphics aren't everything but just take a look at assassin / cod4 to make your eyes pop out Shocked

True. It's a shame as both the xbox and PS2 could preform visual treats when pushed. No one has even began to push the Wii. Mario looks awesome. Slick presenation can make a massive difference.

Like I've said a few times, these developers then moan their games don't sell. No one will buy games that look like last gen, five year old games. They don't even try to make them look as good as Gamecube or Xbox, just crap PS2 or PSP games Rolling EyesRolling Eyes

The PS2 has pulled off some pretty sweet graphics, but then look at Mario Galaxy now - you can't claim the Wii isn't capable. It's pushing the envelope of the "weak" Wii graphical power. It doesn't look like this really does it justice now.

It's possible it was originally meant to be a PS2 port but they thought they could make more money by porting it to Wii as well. Because we've already had a zillion PS2 ports with no graphical updates and suspect motion controls.

Smells like a weak PS2 port to me. It's a shame because the alone in the dark series was fantastic back in the day when it was first released.

Well its quite obvious that the Wii is capable of lot more. Its just that Nintendo isn't encouraging the use of better graphics, and developers know its just easier to re-use graphics from the PS2 and tack on Wii controls to it.

So yes, we can expect another weak port...

I'm not bothered by the graphics... if the story is well conveyed and it makes me jump then does it really need better graphics... if done properly the wii controls could add some serious kick ass. You graphics whores out there need to take a reality check, better looking games dont make for better games.. just look at Assassins Creed... all that graphical prowess and still just so so scores.. gameplay is king, long live gameplay!

i keep saying this and its true,as long as a game is being made 4 ps2 and wii,the wii will always get a cheap port of the ps2 version that doesnt even begin to push the wii graphicly.im playing prime 3 and seen super mario galaxy so im well aware that the wii is beyond last gen big time.no matter how much the developer lies ands says where pushing the hardware thats just to cover their own ass'es.retro studios and nintendo need to sit these shameful programmers down and let them play real wii games like prime 3 and super mario galaxy and see the goal posts are moved in graphics on wii with these titles and remember to stop bulls**tting bout were pushing the wii as hard as we can.do they think were back in the ps1 days with the s**t the produce?wii isnt as powerful as ps3 or xbox360 but its noway as underpowerd as these developers let you beleave.its like this you get payed to do a certin amount of work are you going to do any extra for the same pay?no.

The trailer for this game did little to intrigue me. It seemed like a generic cityscape. Fortunately, these screenshots hint at a classic 'haunted mansion' feel at least in part. I really enjoyed Alone in the dark: the new nightmare (until it became too difficult) for that reason.

Good. Even ground for a "hardcore" title is what the wii needs to show some dev.'s the possibilities, profit-wise.
Though it won't represent the Wii's actual power, it'll help show Wii isn't all about grandmothers.

(I hope Razz)

I'm a big Wii supporter, but looking at some of those screenshots, it makes me think developers may never 'get it'. One or two of them looked like they could have come from an N64. This is really disheartening - for every one person that says that graphics mean nothing, there are two others that think eye candy is the be all and all of gaming. And that then leads to the vicious circle of no one buying, so games not made, to console going under. Bring back the Nintendo Seal of Quality! Smile

My money says that this is indeed a straight port of the PS2 version, sadly. I just hope that game developers in the future shy away from this tactic.

I kinda agree with that, plus there was never enough to scare me on the Gamecube.

true but the 'cube did have 2 of the best horror games of all time : re remake and re4. as for alone in the dark,as soon as i see ps2 next to wii (in platforms developed for) that game becomes an immediate non-purchase. if dev's want my money they'll have to try harder. simple really.

Err, Eternal Darkness? While graphically not as impressive as either of those, it was EASILY as good as REmake.
