DivX technology - the magic that makes one of the most popular video formats on the internet work - is officially coming to PS3, and about bloody time, too.
Until now, PS3 users have had to go through the rigmarole of converting all their AVI format videos - which is the format everything seems to come in nowadays - into PS3 compatible video such as MPEG 3. But not when DivX support finally lands.
"Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX.
"DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date," explains DivX.
Incorporation of DivX tech also means that developers will also be able to use the DivX format for their games, too.
I will be able to watch Heroes season 2 on my HD Tv instead of a pc monitor.
Most HDTV's have a VGA or DVI input, so you could have done that anyway. That's how I watch it. Heroes season 2 is just starting to get interesting!!
As a couple of people have already said, DivX is getting on a bit now and is slowly making way to far better h264 format. However, most videos are still encoded with DivX it seems so it doesn't seem such a poor choice for Sony. h264 support would be nice though.

I'm pretty sure that the PS3 already supports h.264 files, in fact my PS3 is full of them!!
Bad news for Divx DVD players everywhere with a PS3 in the mix
Most of the vids I run into on the net are still in Div X. Haven't ran into any other format so far yet. Although the new format I've read about today seems interesting. Must find out more.
