Assassin's Creed: 360 vs. PS3

The two versions side by side
Ubisoft's long-awaited Assassin's Creed finally swings gracefully into the shops this Friday, and to help you dual-console owners decide which version to get, we've knocked together a comparison video.

Assassin's Creed (360) - JerusalemGameplay footage
3:05  We'd never get away with that in Essex

Under a microscope the PS3 version does look a bit sharper when the two versions are running side by side.

The Xbox 360 version makes up for this with (arguably) better controls and we're also told it runs two or three frames faster than the PS3 cousin, though no-one's going to notice that.

The other, less fanboy-ish aim of these movies is to show off the game's awesome free-running system. It places Altair's hands and feet onto individual stones and ledges as he clambers across the Jerusalem rooftops. It looks fantastic, we're sure you'll agree.

You can read CVG's Assassin's Creed review here.

Not sure which version to get really, I think the PS3 pad might be better for platformers as I find it comfortable with POP and Tomb Raider. Although they say the Xbox 360 has better controls here.

Don't forget that creed started out life as a PS3-exclusive and has been in development for that platform for longer. If there is any perceivable difference in quality (which I doubt you could see on these videos anyway) then it wouldn't really be that surprising - these comparisons never really compare 'like with like'!

Ummm...no. It wasn't a PS3 exclusive, and the dev team mentioned on other channels that the 360 was the lead machine for the build.

And thanks to the PS3 architechure and the controller, we're likely going to see more of this throughout the life of the PS3 and XBox 360--the former will look slightly better in still shots, but the latter will have better control, better online play (if applicable), better metagames (read: achievements), and a better framerate. It all comes down to the architecture planning for each system--on Sony's side, one hand didn't talk w/the other, and you've got a gimped system. Microsoft actually talked w/each other and learned from the original XBox's mistakes.

Sorry, PS3 fanboi, but the 360 is where it's at this gen. Maybe next time around...

I think he was just defending the 360 version by saying it was made first on PS3 so if there were any differences, that would be the reason rather than the actual machines performance, not saying it was inferior or anything.

Laughing and gamespot said the exact opposite; that the 360 version had a sharper contrasting light, while the PS3 version had better framerate. just goes as proof that all this 360 vs. PS3 bickering is fanboy hype. me, i already have it for the PS3. big, clunky controllers like the 360 pad just don't do it for me with 3rd person games.

360 version all the way.
Sinthetic on 14 Nov '07
I would have of thought the decisions about which version to buy if you own systems is whichever you can get the cheapest deal on.

Any differences between the game on either system are obviously so slight that you need to running both systems side by side to notice. So not something you are going to notice with the version you do buy compared to the one you left in the shop.

From PS3.ign.com (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/834/834770p4.html)

...These big open worlds, which are fully interactive, do come at a severe cost on PS3. There is considerable texture pop-in and noticeable framerate issues. Playing back-to-back with the 360 version, it’s obvious that Ubisoft did not devote enough resources to the PS3 edition. The framerate is considerably worse, so much so that it begins to affect gameplay in the later levels. You can get through the first two-thirds of Assassin with the framerate being just an annoyance, but it becomes more of an issue for the final third of the missions...

Look at the advancements in PC graphics year on year.

i wouldn't think so, i'm pretty sure both versions have been in development at the same time, so there wouldn't be any vast differences unless they were struggling with an aspect of it on one of the versions due to the different pros and cons of each console.
oh and to all the people saying "ps3 version is better" or "360 version is better" your wrong, they are the same

You are forgetting the PS3 was delayed for a year by Blu-Ray. The rest of it was ready to go, AFAIK they didn't nip off and upgrade the rest of it while they were waiting.

If I remember correctly, the graphics processor in the 360 is actually the more powerful.

"The PS3 version does look a little sharper..."

ORLY? Gamespot says different:

"There are few differences between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. PS3 owners are blessed with a slightly more solid frame rate, although the 360 version features a little more contrast in the lighting, so it's pretty much a wash."

The videos look pretty much identical to me. I'm getting the 360 version, myself, but only because I NEED achievments! lol
Reace on 14 Nov '07
Next time CVG, post the vid & say which is better looking, but dont label the videos. Then let ppl say which they think is better looking - then say at a later date which is which. hehehe, that'l make those fan boys look foolish when they pick the wrong one!
spottyelephant on 14 Nov '07
IGN apparently have said the PS3 version is compromised in later levels due to the framrate - but you guys would know that as you'e reviewed it, right?
gusswan on 14 Nov '07
Not that you can actually tell a great deal from the videos, but they looked practically identical to me. Of the two consoles, each one is bound to have it's strengths and weaknesses and with multi-format games like this one, developers aren't going to go the extra mile to take advantage of those.

Personally I think it works in the PS3s favor that Ubisoft have managed to get the game finished in line with the 360 version, despite them obviously having experience only with the 360 prior to this.

If I were to buy the game, I'd probably end up getting it for the PS3 for the sole reason that I don't own an Elite and I feel that I'd get a crisper picture through HDMI than component. That certainly proved to be the case with CoD4.

I was hoping there would be a nice splat when you jump off high building and hit the floor.

Diomedes1977 on 15 Nov '07
I think the framerate of the 360-Version is a little better, but its really hard to see with such a video quality. I ordered the 360 Version just because of the achievements. Should arrive with my PS3-Version of CoD4 tommorow. (Hah, the last to game, that got these a crappy PS3 vs 360 comparisons. Maybe I compare both games, I'm sure I'll see some differences. Makes at least as much sense as comparing the two versions of each game on that 320x240 or-whatever resolution Very Happy)

Selanmere on 15 Nov '07
game looks same if not a little better on 360 but has better motion blur (which is why it isn't as 'sharp'), lighting, and LOD popping PLUS the framerate is MUCH better

IGN says ps3 framerate becomes almost unplayable towards the end
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/834/834770p4.html

360 is the more powerful machine, better gpu and twice the memory when will people finally face the facts.
stormgoat on 15 Nov '07
Besides a slightly choppy framerate when the player moves the view quickly to view the whole city, the PS3 version also has noticable screen tearing. I have noticed severe screen tearing on several PS3 games that I have played at the local Gamestop including Call of Duty 4, Resistance, F.E.A.R., Heavenly Sword, Lair, and MotorStorm.

What is screen tearing? Screen tearing is when the video card or monitor or CPU can not push enough data onto the entire screen at once. This is can be caused by faulty drivers, v-sync being disabled on a high resolution with the framerate set low, or a limitation somewhere in the video bandwidth before it gets to the screen.

What does screen tearing look like? Ask anyone who played a PC on an old CRT at 60hz refresh rate and one of the first generation video cards (Riva TNT, Canopus Total3D, Voodoo 1.. etc). You see everything on the screen, but some objects stutter and get sliced into pieces like as if being torn apart. In some cases, the entire screen tears in half. It only happens for fractions of a second, but it is very visable and noticable. Locking the v-snyc on will usually fix this problem, so it may be a fixable problem on the PS3, but I have noticed it in all of the above games and almost every new PS3 game I have seen.

You may ask, well maybe its just the monitor at Gamestop sucks on the PS3 kiosk.. well that might be true, but I also tried the kiosk at the Sony store, and they have it hooked up to one of the more expensive DNA Sony LCD screens. I also noticed PS3 screen tearing while watching gameplay footage on G4's "Attack of the Show" and "X-Play". I also noticed PS3 screen tearing on web videos like this Assins creed video and even on official trailers for PS3 games. It is humiliating! I do not know why this has continued to be a problem past the initial launch titles.

Just look at the first video on the right. Watch the first minute of gameplay on each side of the screen. Notice the 360 has no screen tearing, but when you look at the PS3 side, watch as the view of the whole city comes on screen.. the character and parts of the building and screen begin to tear.

On a side note, I noticed the 360 had better lighting as well, but it is hard to tell with the low quality of the web video. But the screen tearing is clearly visable on the PS3 even on a tiny 300x250 web video.. imagine that tearing on a 51" LCD!

To defend the PS3, I saw screen tearing in only 1 360 game, Blazing Angels part1. In part 2 on the 360 the tearing was fixed.
bountyHunter7 on 15 Nov '07
I found my experience to be the exact opposite. I traded my 360 in for a PS3 several months back and have noticed a lot less screen tearing in general although it is indeed still present in some games. Interestingly, I noticed the AA on PS3 to be initially worse (especially with ports like GRAW) and there used to be a lot more jaggies than on 360. However, they seem to be sorting this out because COD4 and Assassins Creed look best on PS3 whereas Halo's got more Jags than Jon Prescott, lol.

It is laughable that PS3 Fanboys say the PS3 version looks better and the 360 Fanboys say the 360 version looks better. I agree with an earlier post that suggests not putting the version text on the videos and watch the fanboys brains explode as they fail to decide on which one is which!

I can't tell any difference especially on these small videos. It is possible that if you have a top of the range 47"+ tv that the PS3 version will look slightly better than the non-elite 360s but I would imagine it would hardly be noticeable at all.
leefear1 on 15 Nov '07
I'm just gonna throw this thought out there... Ready?

Shouldn't you all just be happy that both the 360 and PS3 are getting it? I mean as gamers shouldn't we all be happy that we will have the chance to enjoy this game regardless of what machine we own?
vectra on 15 Nov '07
There's a better quality if somewhat short 720p comparison video over on Gamersyde by the way. C&VG's videos are too small and poor quality to see the difference in my opinion.

From the Gamersyde video, both games appear almost graphically identical to me with two notable exceptions. One is that the PS3 version looks a little more washed out colourwise and, two, the PS3 version looks jerkier during the camera pan at the top of the tower plus it seems to have more v-sync tearing. For me, the 360 version looks slightly better and it is that version which I've bought (came in the post today) despite the fact that I own both machines. In my experience, multiformat games tend to be better on the 360, whether it's better framerate, anti-aliasing and/or controller. Still I bought a PS3 to play its exclusive games on so it doesn't bother me that its multiformat games are slightly inferior, not when I can play excellent games like Ratchet and Clank Future and the promising (judging by the demo) Uncharted.

P.S. Since the HUD and game tips clearly show which buttons you need to press for each console, it's not that difficult to work out which version is which even if they weren't labelled. Wink

I've seen both versions running (I own the 360 version) and the 360 version is definitely the better of the two games but not by much. The PS3 version has a lot more tearing and the framerate drops more often (which is what causes the tearing in the first place). There isn't much in it though.

Great game by the way, at least for the first two hours or so I've played it...

At times I thought the 360 one looked better, at others, the PS3 one. In short, there isn't much of a difference in the two, and the difference that is there is barely noticable - this quibbling is ridiculous.
