Sony Korea takes pop at Wii

"When you're coming home tired, are you really going to play Wii Boxing by yourself?" says Korean boss
The Wii is a short term craze that won't last the stretch, unlike PS3 which is more of a gamers' console, according to Sony of Korea boss, Kang Hee-Won.

A confident Hee-Won said: "Sure, there's a price advantage, but I think the Wii's popularity is only short term. "However," he added, "we're thinking a long term view is where the PS3 will be popular".

He didn't stop there. "In the living room, parents control the TV, not the children. There are TV dramas they want to watch, so they tell the kids to go study. The Wii's concept is fun in the living room, but I think that is difficult in Korea. Game players put the PS3 in their room like with a PC monitor, and I can't imagine those types of players putting the Wii in their rooms to play alone."

He then questions Wii's practicality. "Also, when you're coming home tired, are you really going to play Wii Boxing by yourself?" No, Mr Kee-Won, we'd play a less physical game instead of a lunch game.

Korea is becoming an increasingly important territory in the world of games. With DS doing well out there and Wii well on the way, and PS3 having a pop at the young market, companies are finally taking notice of Korea, even if piracy does run rampant.

I read that as 'South Korea takes a pop at Wii' and then was really disappointed when it turned out to be just Sony of Korea.

Now that would be a real news story, countries picking sides in the console war: 'Cuban President Proclaims "Wii is Well Gay" ', "Scottish MP: we hate two things - minorities, and Xbox 360" , "China: Democracy and PS3 - curses of the modern world"

That man is an idiot, and his comments are just under a year late Laughing .
Biggwedge on 14 Nov '07
I thought the PS3 was designed to be some home hub thing that lived in the living room?!
FatBoyFonz on 14 Nov '07
Yep, he is talking out of his bottom...if you're too tired after a day at work to play Wii Sports then just relax and play one of the ever increasing high quality none physical games instead.

I don't think Nintendo have made it compulsary yet that you have to play boxing for an hour before you go to bed. What a cretin!

No because the games boring when your on your own

If im tired im gunna doze off sitting down not standing up
dandoc2 on 14 Nov '07
To start with the guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The type of person he's talking about aren't the ones that buy Wii's. The Wii audience are family's or people that want one for a party environment. Wii isn't going to steal sales away from PS3 or 360 so he should keep his mouth shut and stop making Sony looks like idiots.

lol that made me laugh out loud - quality! lots of sensible comments for once there as well - i'm shocked not one fan boy - oh well

although seriously PS3 is more of a gamers console... what a gamers console with no games...

people like this should shut up - makes you wonder how they got to be president of sony korea when they are such idiots

This is true, when my mates aren't around I'm busy playing Metroid Prime 3. Multiplayer Bomberman and cans is on Fridays. Surely they know about this in Korea. Although I'm sure they are too busy locked in darkened rooms playing World of Warcraft for 5 days straight unil they die. Which seems to be a popular pastime over there.

This whole gimmick thing has been going on for ages. Rolling Eyes I so badly want the Wii to do well and keep doing well just so these guys can eat their words.
vectra on 14 Nov '07
then don't play boxing play Zelda, Resident Evil chronicles, Metroid Prime or Mario Galaxy, their is more to Wii than just cheap mini games and I am sure next year there will be even better proper games available so this guy is talking s**t really and the fact that my Wii sits in my bedroom and so does my Sisters suggests that this guy does not know anything!!!
seancuk23 on 14 Nov '07
"When you're coming home tired, are you really going to play Wii Boxing by yourself?"

Yes Rolling Eyes

In all seriousness. For me, I have not had this much fun on a console since my dad came home one day with a Megadrive under his arm, and I got to play Sonic The Hedgehog for the first time.

If it's a craze then so what, I'm just glad to be along for the ride. Wink

he should look at how monster hunter 3 is only coming to wii. he should shut up and try to keep games for his system which will sell amazingly well in japan when its released

Even *if* the Wii is just a gimmick, it's been a profitable gimmick since day one, and has made Nintendo a big fat pile of cash - something that Sony (and Microsoft too for that matter) can only be jealous of, regardless of anything else they say in public.
cjw101 on 14 Nov '07
I think we've just found a worthy successor to Kuturagi's PR statements, Jack Tretton still comes a close second with his infamous "I'll pay anyone who finds an unsold PS3 $250,000", we ain't heard from him for a while most likely due to him going underground to avoid the debt collectors turning up at his house to collect the cash and Harrison comes third, don't get me started on him.

That's exactly his point, he's saying gamers(more the harder core) don't buy wii's and play em in there room

Anyways, thing is, i dunno bout you guys, but other than times when there's a serious games drought i always play the latest game i've got, so if it's a physical game and i'm knackered and feeling fat.. well fatter i'll just be like mmm f tht.

Maybe the wii isn't a gimmick, however my friend has a wii, he popsover to mine for the weekend, then whaddya know? by the end of the weekend he's got plans to save up and buy the ps3 for the x-mas price drop - which came 2 months before he expected.
lwill on 14 Nov '07
Thinking about South Korean culture, there's a chance the guy could be right. But then again, there's the size to think about. The size of a product plays a major role in South Korea, and the Wii is tiny next to the colossal PS3.
Taralla on 14 Nov '07
The only reason I would come home tired is if I'd taken that second job Sony said we'd all need to afford the PS3. I chose the 360 Sony.
horngreen on 14 Nov '07
No, Mr Kee-Won, we'd play a less physical game instead of a lunch game.

Naa... I'd rather play a dinner game myself.

I hear Soup-er Mario Galaxy is a pretty tasty lunch game!

Shouldn't this be: pass away time then? Very Happy
Thaxus on 15 Nov '07
I did my dissertation on gaming in South Korea 2005/2006-time and the research I did suggested that consoles weren't at all popular in the country anyway - the PC is a much larger market, and they've got a lot of regular gamers.

Perhaps this article on CVG suggests consoles are becoming more attractive, but I doubt greatly so.
deadmartyr on 15 Nov '07
Why would anyone give a s**t about what the head of Sony South Korea says? Perhaps if he'd said, "I hate Sony", or "I hate black people", this would be interesting, but it's really like a soldier saying "I don't like the other side." Big surprise.
