UT III 360 not even started yet

Work won't start until the PS3 version is done
Epic hasn't even started on the 360 version of Unreal Tournament III yet, reveals company VP Mark Rein. He says Epic intends to finish the PS3 version before shifting focus to 360 "early next year", when we were originally expecting it to be released.

It seems Xbox 360 fans will have to wait a lot longer for their deathmatch action due to issues with running user-created mods on the platform.

In Rein's words: "The PS3 is an open system, and they embrace user-created content. But there isn't really a way to do that on the 360."

The PS3 version of UT III will be fully compatible with user-created mods made for the PC version - something that, according to Rein, isn't as easy to pull off on 360.

"So our job, when we finish the PS3 version, and we've taken a little break, is to sit down with Microsoft and to figure out how we can do mods on their system," he told Wired.

We asked Rein himself at E3 earlier this year about how the 360 version was coming along and, while we're not sure whether he misunderstood us or if he dodged the question, he said: "Unreal Engine 3 is a better engine today on Xbox 360 than it was a year ago and part of that is because of what we've done on PlayStation 3 with UT and the things we're doing with Gears of War on PC.

"So yeah," he added, "the engine's improved a lot since we shipped Gears of War and when we bring out the Xbox 360 version [of UT III] you'll see that."

Nowhere does he say UT III is running well on 360. Just the Unreal Engine.

Elsewhere, Rein confirmed that the PS3 version of the game will boast an install option, which will store around 3.5GB of commonly used data to the PS3 hard drive to greatly speed up load times. Plus, changes to the user interface will make options on the PS3 version easier to browse than that of the PC version, which has been criticised for its awkwardness.

The PS3 release date is still up in the air. Word got out that the game could be pushed back to early next year, but Rein remains optimistic of a pre-Christmas release.

The PC version will be out on November 23 either way.

...and yet the 360 is pretty much a PC in a fancy box, and the PC version is already finished, mmm...

And besides, haven't bungie already got a system up and running to get user created stuff on people's 360's?

Contractual-obligation-satisfying soundbites, oh yes.

I'm sure they are further on than that! But only MS is to blame for the issues with user content. Wouldn't want us getting anything for free huh?

My guess sony slipped them a fiver to say that

Don't care - I won both consoles.

But if both versions were out this year I'd still get PS3 version for 2 MAIN reasons - Bigger HD and FREE online!

I love how people still make a point of xbox live costing 40 quid a year which works out at 77p a week, its been like that for 5 years and is easily the best online service on a console.

The question maybe you should ask your self is 'Am i really to cheap to pay 77p a week for the best service?'

Also strange isn't how you rarely if never hear people who actually pay for the service complaining.

Bigger HD?

WTF is that?

If anything "Bigger HD" is on PC.

I was running the UT Beta @ 2560 x 1600.

Lets see any PS3 + TV try that.....

And free online?

Have you seen the amount of stuff on XBL?

The only paying thing is for Online and well atleast nearly every game has online and features in game chat.

And i pay Ł25 a year.

Its a little place called eBay where i get it even cheaper than it already is.

Sod UT3 if they haven't started it yet. There are enough FPS's already. Get on the case of Gears of War 2 already.

I'm still getting ths on the PC, it's where UT started and in my min it's where it belongs.
Don't get me wrong I wll try it on the 360 when it comes out.

I was convinced they were aiming to have it out around the same time as the PS3 version, I guess Sony maybe slipped them something to get some kind of exclusive on it, I'm sure it will be enough for people to buy the PS3, unless they are die hard 360 or PC owners.

"Mark Rein said that... the classic Unreal Tournament modding could still be performed and uploaded to your friends. Rein even told us that there were plans to allow for players to release mods for sale on the Playstation Network."

Not for free. I think its that they want the consumer to produce and upload the mods. Something I could see MS being funny about with the process they have in place. Even patches have to go through MS first, so I have no idea what player mods would have to go through.

PCs still have bigger hard drives too, generally Hard drives are abbreviated to HDD as in hard disk drive.

Exactly - and if he meant in comparison to the consoles, my Elite still has a bigger HDD.

The Unreal Engine can run code straight from the PC version on the PS3 (how come both wont be finished together then?) - chances are, with the 360 being a PC, it'll be similar coding wise. It wouldn't take long to port finalized content, especially with XNA. The Unreal Engine already runs better on the 360 than the PS3, as proven by almost every UE3 game on the market.

Sounds like they've been put up to this. Microsoft have clearly shown willingness for user created content - they had a big press conference on the ability for developers to have their own 'marketplace', hosted by themselves, and monitored by themselves, cutting Microsoft (and certification) out of the equation.

And if he did mean Hard Drive, he's still wrong because the Elite has a 120GB HDD compared to PS3's paltry 40GB.

Regardless; there's all this talk of user mods and install options to improve loading times. It all sounds well and good in principle, but to me this is encroaching a little too close to the pain-in-the-bottom world of PC gaming.

If I wanted to install half a game before I played it, I'd buy a PC. The whole point of a console is that you slap a game in the tray, turn it on, and get playing. But now, you'll find yourself doing things like switching between 720p and 1080i/p and back again to reduce frame tearing, worrying about your ping online, and now this, installing games because they can't be bothered improving loading times.

Anyway, on a console that is literally buried under FPS games - and let's not forget that Orange Box is one of the best of them - I'm pretty sure the 360 can survive without another one for a few months!

Epic love pushing technology so I guess they are seeing what they can do with PS3, after GoW on the 360. I do know that Rein said that some levels/content would be missing from the PS3 version to ensure that it ran smoothly (30fps max). Apparently due to the lack of RAM in the PS3. Which is a little worrying for the final build for some PC gamers, but then PC gamers can adjust settings in options anyway to optimise performance.

and by 'Your' i meant xbots!
i guess epic is one of the few developers that are beginning to see the weaknesses of 360 infront of the mighty PS3. Sorry folks but thats how it is.
Oh and by the way, some 360 fanatics at a website claimed to have hands on time with teh 360 version of UT3. some fantasy.
Also, some people are claiming that the elite has a bigger hdd. well 40gb is more than adequate considering how efficient the ps3 games are memory wise. that said, i wonder much of 120 gb u have left after the system takes up its share of capacity. i believe the 'premium' 360 with 20 gb hdd leaves people with a little more 13gb to cram their game data in. i have a 60gb ps3 and the system takes less that 5 gb to manage itself.
...well, all in all....it was a sweet F.U from mark rein. peace.

And you have to install games on the PS3 to stop loading times being so long cuz blu-ray is so slow haha, good one you moron, a good argument would've been that you can add on any size HDD you want to PS3.

Jesus, you know its bad when you start writing fanboys argument for them.

They'll likely put extra content in the 360 version which they won't bring to PS3 due to code differences, like they did with PC Gears Of War.
