It was always a pipedream, really; Microsoft's Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb has debunked all talk of the new downloadable Xbox Originals featuring 360-type achievements.
The downloadable Xbox games, which will be arriving on December 4 for 1200 Microsoft points (about a tenner), will appear via software emulation / backwards features, which is just one of the reasons why retro-active Achievements just can't happen.
"The answer is no," Nelson informs the gutted Achievement whores on his semi-official blog. "These are the original games that were created before Xbox 360. In order to preserve the integrity of the original gaming experience they provide, they will have the features available at the time of their initial release.
"I know it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but I thought it would be best to get clear up an[y] misunderstanding up right up front," he says. "Would it have been cool? Sure it would ...but as many folks have noted, for a variety of reasons it's just not possible."
Oh well, it looks like we'll have to buy Xbox classics solely for the enjoyment of playing them, and not to rack up our Gamerscore.
I wouldn't have expected them - I'd guess it would take a fair amount of re-programming to add achievements in to a game that didn't have them in the first place.
booo! rubbish! yes people do still play xbox games for fun - thats what gaming is all about.
BUT - to charge 1,200 MS points - e.g. nearly a tenna for games you can get second hand for much much less and have no achievements for them is not going to go down well
will we be able to take the games online? would love to play halo online again - wizrd rockets 50 frags -would be awesome - but for games like fable or farenheit it just doesnt seem worth it
although i do understand that for people who havent played the original games this would be good as they get a game that is much better than the average xbox live arcade game
just think microsoft missed a trick here - if they had achievements they would have made a stack of cash..

As they are not taking the time to make sure the games work perfectly on the 360, why would anyone expect them to add feature like achievement to these old games.
All it sounds like is that they are basically selling ISOs of old xbox games on Live.
they could have put 1 achievement in for finishing the game at least, say a few hundred points dont think that would have been to hard at least it would have been something.
Doesnt really bother me if they dont have achievements, it would have been nice though.
I really hate 'achievement whores'.. not ppl who try to get lots of achievements the way they were intended... just those ppl who: only play the games to get the achievements, choose games based on how easy it is to get the achievements, and resort to boosting/cheating to get difficult and/or time consuming achievements.
The amount of these gits i have played Microsoft could just bring out an 'achievement pack' and those losers would probably buy it... go into a games shop and pay some money for achievements and gamerscore.
Im sure they would still go online feeling really proud to show off their (fake) gamerscore. At least it would save other(real)gamers the annoyance of having their online games mucked up by ppl not playing properly coz theyre 'going for achievements'
sorry about the rant, i had an annoying experience the other night with some cheaters.. oh sorry i mean boosters
So let me get this, they expect us to pay £10 for games that don't even play properly, have no achievements and will most likley take up about 4GB of my HDD which already has limited space? Whats the point? I'd be better off picking up the actual disc for the game for about £2 from Ebay... Really shameful of MS. I was expecting them to do what developers do on Live Arcade by going back to spice their games up with HD, achievements and online play.

They managed to put them into all of the XBLA games like sonic etc?
Robinson, you need to chill the smeg down. If people want to 'boost' their GS then let them - let us real gamers play the games and have fun whilst getting achievements for doing fun/difficult things in the game. And calling them whores is just stupid... who the smeg thought that crap up?
And to point - what is the point (ha) of making the games availible if there isn't going to be anything new for it? Add something! Anything! As long as it's decent! All they have to do is have one - thats right children, one - modded copy of the game to run on a 360. Then upload the code to some servers and bing-badda-boom a downloadable game. Add some achievements or some multiplayer attachment, please!
