The DS Lite isn't even two years old, yet an industry analyst reckons Nintendo already has another redesign ready.
"Our contacts indicate that a refreshed DS is complete," says Pacific Crest Securities analyst, Evan Wilson, who details the features of the supposed third-generation DS.
"It is thinner, has on-board storage, and larger screens," he claims, also saying that the new model will lack a GBA port which would obviously shave off some of the bulk.
This is not the first time that word of a new DS has emerged. Japanese gaming magazine, Gamelabo, reported back in June that a new model of DS will target an older audience, with a bigger screen for enlarged text.
"However, we do not expect a revamped Wii or DS until sales begin to tail off in all three major geographies," concluded Wilson, according to GameSpot. Judging by the huge success of both consoles, we doubt that'll happen for some time yet.
Nintendo UK, however, plays it all down as "utter speculation...".
Do I get a Lite? Do I hold on for this possible better version? Will I miss being able to play my GBA games - or miss the few quid I could get for selling my GBA if I get a Lite now-ish?
That's a load of rubbish. The DS would not get rid of the GBA port they use that for peripherals such as expansion pak, rumble pak, the new DS camera that's coming out. Plus you need it to transfer your Pokémon from the GBA games to the DS versions.

This is wild speculation, and we'll never know if it is true or not. I'm sure a revised DS will hit the streets at some point, wether or not it is completed already is another thing..
aesthetically the ds lite is perfect as far as im concerned.
I agree, if this is true, I fail to see why they feel the need to redesign what is already the perfect piece of gaming kit.
Also, what good would taking the GBA slot away do? Surely that was a huge selling port of the DS - yes it's a better machine than the GBA, it's got a touch screen and great graphics...but most of all, you don't have to get rid of your GBA gmaes!
Of course Nintendo has a redesign at the ready! They always do, might not be the final design however
Probably be revealed when DS sales hit a slump (not for now).
Note: These things sell in Japan as soon as they are redesigned, even if no games are released. Perhaps it's just me but I've never seen the point in upgrading to a new slimmer version of something just because a newer version is out when the old one still works! Hence why I still had a 3210 Nokia 2 years ago
As some people pointed out there's no way that they'll be removing the GBA port because of the peripherals that use it. I would hazzard a guess that this particular idiots' contacts have glimpsed plans of whatever the successor to the DS is going to be like, so it'll likely be years before this is seen in any sort of form.
What's wrong with new peripherals? or built in ones? Don't get me wrong, I love my DS, but a new slimmer one with larger screens, (and maybe Gamecube graphics), would be great. And we know it would sell like hot cakes.

I have thought about getting a DS Lite, but my original DS is still fine, despite a heavily marked touchscreen, and I have been thinking another redesign or a unique paintjob for the Lite may be along the way soon in Europe.

I still use my nokia 3210
Mine died unfortunately, just started turning itself off. The battery was replaced but it never helped. It was just on it's last legs.

A 3210 actually died? Bloody hell that's a first, mine's still working, I kept it because all the other phones I've had since then eventually kick the bucket so I always have it as a backup.
