DivX coming to Xbox 360 too

Porn's favourite video format eyes Xbox 360 as well as PS3
Following in Sony's lead Microsoft is planning to bring DivX video support to the Xbox 360, says a report on XueCast.com.

According to the site the news was confirmed by DivX CEO Kevin Hell (great name), who said that his company is currently working with Microsoft to bring Divx MPEG-4 to the Xbox 360, though it's not high on MS's priority list.

Currently an un-modded Xbox 360 can only support video formats such as WMV, HD WMV, H.264 and MPEG-4.

Hell confirmed earlier this week that DivX support will also be coming to the PS3. "DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date," he said.

According to Hell, there are more restrictions surrounding software on the Xbox 360, so the 360 Divx project is moving at a slower pace compared to the PlayStation 3.

Good news if you fancy putting some of your mucky videos on your Xbox, and presumably it means developers can use it for games too.

I hope it doesn't tell people what vids you're watching on your Gamercard "PWONZERZ LORDZ666 is watching slutty Russian nympho's in the sausage incident"

This is awesome, converting my divx's to wmv is such a tedious process, I was praying this was going to happen soon...
khr0nik on 16 Nov '07
That would be so funny Smile

Although I have to say the idea of getting a voice message from one of my friends while they have porn on is quite scary Razz

* Heavy breathing *
"You want to... play Halo... in... a minute?"

Dear god no.

Shocked

Now there's a worrying thought...

There's a PC app that'll convert DivX's to WMV on-the-fly, and stream it to your 360: http://www.runtime360.com/

Yay! I can think of "lots of uses" for that.

i.e. One.
csdaveuk on 16 Nov '07
Yuck. I can't believe people still use Divx.
I want to see support for the x264 codec so I can watch all those HD mkv files I have.
vulcanraven01 on 16 Nov '07
Meh I've been enjoying divx on my 360 for over a month now using Winamp Remote.

Install, specify where your vids are, go to video on media tab, say that you have straming software installed, select orb secure from list and presto divx streamed without the bells and whistles of some of the other streaming solutions.

Glad its coming legally, just want XVID more to be honest.

Still a very good way forward.

I just hope developers steer clear of using it in games. I mean specifically from a blu ray persepctive, whats the point in massive amounts of storage to compress the darn video?

Regardless of how good compression is, it dosnt touch uncompressed media.

You don't think that it's maybe just because the DivX company has only just got the software modded to work on consoles?

Besides, let's be honest here - Sony has done their share of stealing this generation too.

You don't say? Aye yet again, the higher-ups at Sony decided to make a console that looks like a toaster and has a tonne of crap on it that you'll never use. Pointless lack of innovation.
