With Wii continuing to do incredibly well, third parties are jumping on board faster than we can keep track of, but Nintendo wants devs to "take time" on their creations instead of rushing out quick cash-ins.
Speaking of Wii's healthy third party support, Nintendo of America's George Harrison said: "Certainly there's a strong line-up of third party titles, and we're trying to encourage them to make them.
"But, we're also trying to encourage third parties to take the time and effort to make something unique, not just to sort of throw something out on Wii because the Wii's the fast-selling system."
We're glad it's not just us noticing what's going on - late ports from old consoles, broken Wii Remote controls and the rest of the gumpf we've seen from too many third party productions.
He then goes on to state the obvious: "I think the ones that have spent the most time in the box are the ones that are going to be the most successful this holiday."
Elsewhere in the interview with our friends over at Next-Gen, he discusses Nintendo's production numbers for Wii, in light of the ongoing global shortages.
"I can't give an exact number for November and December. We had to make our final decision on how much to produce each month for the holidays back in the summer. It takes about five months for us to increase the actual monthly rate of production," he said.
He goes on to reveal: "We're at a rate now worldwide of about 1.8 million Wiis produced every month, and that's going to sustain itself until we get on top of this. We're trying to make decisions on almost a weekly basis about which market to ship the product to, because in Japan it's a big success, and same in Europe."
Insert potentially offensive joke about the poor, over-worked souls churning out 1.8 million consoles a year here.
Something has to be done! If too many poor 3rd party releases happen then people lose faith in the machine and may end up shunning it totally.
There are 2 more systems on offer so if the grass on the other side looks greener people will jump ship. Nintendo know this all too well and I hope that some quality 3rd party titles appear amongst the sloppily produced junk.

On the other hand, one of the main reasons the PS2 dominated last generation was the number and variety of games available - never mind that 90+% of them were average at best...
Just send every third party developer a copy of Metroid Prime 3 and Mario Galaxy... if their effort doesn't hold up against those two, it's back to the drawing board for them...

Did you own a GameCube? Because you'll get the same amount of games if they do that.
Nintendo don't care if the game is mediocre or fantastic. Obviously they'd rather the developers didn't just take a dump on the Wii, but what they really want is something unique to give people a reason to buy the Wii. They want games that can't be made on other consoles.
The incentive is there for Nintendo to make such games, but for 3rd parties it's a bigger risk. The unique games help Nintendo push the console not the games directly. If the game isn't great and tries something different it won't sell, whereas they could stick with cheap ports and sloppy developments and play safe.
Wii Sports has sold the Wii to most people and in Japan especially it's now showing how little else they have to satisfy their desire for what they expected when buying the Wii.

Well, I've just bought those two today and the controls are spot on (and the graphics etc of both are also really good). This is what (or should be) the Wii's about: great controls for games. Yes, both those are first party games but they both have seamless controls. Why can't third parties do this? Cos both those games are essentially just the same as their predecessor with new control methods. Why can't third parties do this as well? Why do they think they have to make a new type of game for an existing franchise just to justify making it for the Wii? Best examples being Resident Evil: UC and Soul Calibur Legends. The former's scores aren't too bad so far but for an official mag to give something like SLC a rather lame score (cos it is lame) says something.
Getting to grips with the machine? Instead of rushing in (I don't belive either RE: UC of SLC have had much development time), take time and make something decent. Namco made a better version of Soul Calibur when releasing that for the Dreamcast, so why can't they adapt that magic for the Wii? Like someone said before in the other thread, Namco should have made two version of SC 4; one for 360 & PS3 and one for the Wii.

Don't give the developers an excuse for poor efforts. Their in no different a boat to any other; they should make some effort to make good games not resign to the fact it has less power so lets no bother.
Capcom, Konami and even EA have put forward some good efforts (incidentally giving more choice to those who bought a wii) and thats is whats needed. Sure they have ported some games accross too but there has also been effort in other parts.
The ethos behind the Wii is reduced overheads so they can take more of a risk taking a different approach or a new IP. This is beneficial for games as well as the console. As has always been.
Cant Nintendo just refuse to let 3rd parties release dross on the Wii?
Well back in the early days of the NES that's just what they used to do but because of changes in the law they can't do that anymore, they'd get fined, again.
I'd like to think that good games will sell well on the Wii, thus encouraging developers to put extra effort into making quality software...
... but the sad reality is that being a high quality game isn't enough to sell millions of copies - just look at Metroid Prime 3 in the UK. The worrying factor for me is that throw away crap like Wiiplay is selling by the bucketload, so why spend millions on a high class MP3 clone when if you put together a pile of rubbish you'll sell more and spend less.
it'd be nice if every other third party game was unique and playable, well, they ain't,so you get to pick and chose the better games which is fair do's as far as i care! with Cristmas coming, there's some decent software to chose from and enough to keep most happy.as for people jumping ship, they'll go multi-format if they can afford it anyway and just buy the best games for the systems they own ( i do!). p.s i'm using my wii browser to post this, got a buffalo aoss wireless router today, works fantastic!
I have a PS3 and a 360. I am getting a Wii at Christmas mainly for the kids, the sports pack one.
What would you all say are the best three games around for the Wii at present and coming out in the lead up to Christmas, that are different from what I could get on the other consoles and make use of the Wii's controller system. Let say two of them famiy orientatated and the other could be any type of game.
Before blaming the third parties they should take a look at their own products ....games that most could run easily on the Game Cube if they werent developed primarily for that plattform ...games that have just been added motion controls dumbing down the games ....

They can but then all developers would be put off the format. The best consoles always have a high amount of dross. The design of the wii has fostered/encouraged cheap disposable and largely rubbish games. Only a small percentage will ever harness the remote like metroid.

I take it you've never played any of them. The only game which falls into that category is Twilight Princess, which is a gamecube game. The motion controls in that only improve on the original game anyway.
