Mass Effect Review

Majestic - but the planets haven't quite aligned...
They say your first is always the one you remember the strongest. It's certainly true of the first planetary landing you make in Mass Effect. There may be greener, denser, more populated spheres, but your first landing is special. It's one of those moments. The kind of event that, ten or twenty years from now when the mainstream media are no longer scared of all the flashy lights and loud bangs, will be at the business end of those pitiful 'Top 100 Gaming Moments' list things that Channel 4 commission so very, very often. You can imagine how it would go.

"It was terrible," offers a burnt-out Jamie Theakson, looking around the darkened room with empty eyes. "I remember it like it was yesterday. We landed on this small mining planet. Looking for survivors, we were. But... I don't know what they were excavating down there... but it changed them. They were no more men than husks. We had to... kill them all. I was emotionally scarred by Mass Effect, and that's why I [Libellous content removed - Legal Ed] those [And again - Legal Ed] up the [Sigh - Legal Ed]. So when can we bring back Live & Kicking?"

First contact
Our first landing (and you'll forgive us for spoiling this one, as there's plenty more) was a very small, barren, meteor-prone sandstone planet named Edious, located in the Artemis Tau cluster. It was just a routine survey that piqued our interest; a weak distress signal that warranted a closer look. Landing near the signal's source in our all-wheel drive, we crawled over the rocky terrain toward our destination. The distress beacon, we discover, was a set-up. But for what? We don't get much information from the crew of a rescue ship that beat us to the location, because their crew is a bit on the dead side.

Suddenly, the ground rumbles beneath us and things become a bit clearer; a gigantic astroworm funnels out of the ground, spitting out acidic phlegm left right and centre. We dash for the hills in a blind panic, but the worm telegraphs our cowardice and bursts up from underneath, sending us arcing through the air. We escape with our lives; and when you find time to contemplate things during the warmdown, that's when you realise that this isn't just Jade Empire with space marines.

The events as detailed aren't an integral part of the storyline. On the contrary, in fact: miss a conversation here or there, or just let the assignment thread get lost amid a blizzard of other trivial assignments, and it becomes increasingly unlikely that you'll ever set foot on Edious. If you want to just play Mass Effect's main storyline, it probably won't take you that long. But the basic human thirst for exploration, coupled with the size of Mass Effect's universe, dictates that you won't want to do that. You'll want to go from A to B via C, D, E F and G - and by the time you get back on track, you might find that B is an entirely different proposition than it was before.

Lend us your linears
BioWare claim that Mass Effect is the least linear RPG that they've ever assembled, and they're not wrong; aside from all the side-quests, even the main storyline can pan out differently depending on your demeanour. Those who have experienced past BioWare games such as Knights Of The Old Republic will know that they're big on allowing your decisions and interaction to dictate how the NPCs react to you. Mass Effect copies that game's Light/Dark Side mechanic by grafting you the equivalent Paragon/Renegade points every time you make a 'good' or 'bad' decision. But in practice Mass Effect offers so much more than this.

As Captain INSERTNAMEHERE Shepherd, a battle-scarred war hero/heroine, every decision you make will have severe repercussions. You are (or rather, you become) the first human Spectre - an elite intergalactic soldier essentially above the law. Your one remit is to maintain galactic peace whatever the cost. But as with all celebrities, what you say is often as important as what you do. You'll come across a nosy reporter who thinks you're just a shill for the council; lamp her one, and public opinion back on Earth may not be so great. You'll have to keep on the right side of your squad members - during the opening mission on Eden Prime, we were very curt when addressing a young soldier named Ashley Williams, and were surprised to discover that we needed to spend time smoothing things out with her later on.

Later on, you'll need to play diplomat, as distrust grows between human members and alien members, and if your ideology strays too far from theirs, you may find squad members upping sticks entirely. It doesn't help matters that the Council doesn't exactly have your back; humans are a poorly-regarded species within the Alliance, and you'll not be short of people who would like to set you up for a fall. What you say seems to have a very real impact, with chastised team-mates looking at you with big round 'who, me?' eyes. The dialogue trees are excellent. Not once will you find yourself just selecting whatever to progress the storyline. You wouldn't want them to think you were a bastard.

Morality is a complex issue here; you won't sprout crap devil horns like in Fable, but you'll generally find that you get treated as your actions deserve. It's set up for multiple playthroughs (a fact confirmed by some of the game's Achievements) but as engrossing as Mass Effect is, there is a gameplay barrier that, while not enough to ruin the game, might cause you to develop flu-like symptoms if you ever even contemplate playing through it all again: the combat system.

Mortal combat
When you're not sitting around gassing with aliens and changing the very course of the universe with your conversational threads, you're starring in a squad-based third-person shooter. And, it must be said, quite an unrefined one. The concept is that this is to shooters as Jade Empire was to action-adventure games, replacing turn-based combat with real-time action, eliminating the age-old RPG malady of the level grind. Certainly it pulls off the RPG integration with a great degree of finesse. Tapping the right bumper pauses play and brings up the weapons menu for you and your squad, while the left bumper brings up what may as well be the 'spells menu'. What's available to you and your squad is dependant on what areas you've concentrated your experience points on (you can ask the game to allocate them automatically, but we'd recommend doing it yourself, if only to get a decent understanding of how everything works).

The skills are essentially age-old RPG conventions with a sci-fi twist; you can defuse barriers or set up your own; perform a weak neural shock to all nearby organic enemies, or provide temporary boosts in armour or firearm skill. Dependant on your class type or the squad members accompanying you, you can even learn and unleash more far out attacks, such as a 'throw' attack that reminds us distinctly of the Force in KOTOR. But don't waste all your XP on offence; decryption and electronic skills are also important, particularly if you're looking to maximise your understanding of the Mass Effect universe.

Bad cover version
Combat is slow-paced and ruthless. And you really are in command, here - if you lose the plot for a second, nine times out of ten, the situation becomes unsalvageable and your entire team's history. If you've dived in clean from Halo 3, they'll be scraping you off the Eden Prime tarmac multiple times before you get to grips with it. These sections are a strange mix between Ghost Recon, Gears of War and (promise us you won't run away) Perfect Dark Zero, and generally they work really well when sparring against the more intelligent races, where cover and tactical positioning is of the utmost importance. Team-mate AI and pathfinding is generally of a high quality, although they're often prone to hogging the premium cover positions, and you get the odd bout of hilarity where your specially-trained warrior gets flummoxed by a simple door.

The problems that do arise are largely a result of poor design decisions. The more stupid enemies, such as the Husks (a fairly common foe), simply charge at you, not showing off the rudimentary shooting in the best light. Since bullets aren't a worry, with only an overheat meter to keep tabs on, you can defeat large swathes of these by backing off and holding fire, which is about as exciting as helping Alan Shearer strip the wallpaper from his spare bedroom.

But some truly duff level designs in places accentuate this problem. There are more than a few occasions where success is a matter of trial and error - seeking out the 'correct' place to hide and picking the opposition off one by one. And we can't skip onto the next point without mentioning the dreadful section that occurs in the underground tunnels of Feros - wave upon wave of freaks running towards you down a thin, dark corridor? Followed by the exact same attack wave in an identical corridor immediately afterwards? And then another two times after that? Imagine trying to tackle a Flood invasion with Ghost Recon's handling, and you're halfway there. It's misguided level design at best, and occurrences like this turn up far too often to simply dismiss them as a High Charity-esque anomaly.

There's slowdown as well. It's understandable with all that RPG gubbins underneath the bonnet, but where it wasn't so important during the likes of KOTOR, here you're trying to keep a steady aim. It's by no means game-breaking, or even that regular, but it will annoy you before you're through with it. Admittedly, we've been a bit down on the shooting sections, but the truth is that they're perfectly fine if you take the time to approach it as Bioware want you to. Far more immediate are the vehicle sections, which essentially play more like an upfront, dumb shooter and have obviously been placed there to offer a bit of stress relief.

Good to talk
All that said, it's hard not to be hugely impressed, though; the definition of the characters; the way relationships either flourish or are stretching to breaking point; the subtlety in which professional relationships can blossom into romantic interest (so subtle, many players won't even know it's possible). No matter who was in our squad, and no matter how inappropriate or contrary our responses, the reams of dialogue trickled smoothly and flawlessly.

Mass Effect's only problem is, paradoxically, what makes it so great: ambition. After the initial wow factor of being able to explore an entire galaxy, you'll soon get disgruntled with the hand-holding nature of the exploration, with all a planet's goods helpfully mapped out for you, negating the need to poke around a planet on your own. Veer too far from the beaten track and your pilot Joker (Seth Green to you and us) will plonk you back on track like in some kind of racing game from 2002. Elsewhere? The shooting, we've covered. And the plot - as good as it is, it is a bit insular and nerdy. We praise Bioware for their vision and ambition, but as Sideshow Bob once sagely noted, you don't win awards for attempted chemistry.

But the ultimate yardstick of an RPG is how believable its world is and how fluidly the story flows despite the number-crunching that powers it, and it's this that makes Mass Effect so special. Never before has storytelling been so competently ingrained into a videogame, and never before has a player had so much freedom to dictate the course of a linear storyline. Mass Effect isn't the laser-spewing monolith of a game we expected it to be, but it is far, far, far from a disappointment. Until now, RPGs have thought local; Mass Effect thinks global.

Played this for just over 10 hours now and its my personal GOTY. Its simply stunning and brings back memories of the original KOTOR.
My only problems are that as with any Bioware game, the framerate is rather poor and for some reason textures are slow to load up sometimes.
vulcanraven01 on 19 Nov '07
Hopefully those technical issues will be sorted out for the PC version.
Mogs on 19 Nov '07
This has been on my Wanted list for a while.
At first it read like the combat was unsually bad, but you have to accept that RPG combat is always going to be a bit slower than FPS titles.

Chances are I'll still be picking this one up at some point.

i really want this game but the review above makes me wonder. it says 9.0 but continuously comments on bad things Confused after the let down of assassins creed this week end I'm holding off and getting a second hand copy from eBay after Christmas. i have after all 95 stars to find on Mario Shocked

i've got it pre-ordered. i might play it if i can put 'galaxy down (best nintendo game since ocarina). 50 stars left, trial galaxies open, sheer class.

I wonder could a patch after release help to clear up some of those issues? No matter, still can't wait for this! Been in need of a meaty rpg!

This and Fable 2 could cement my purchase of a 360 as soon as possible. I liked KOTOR more than I expected it felt like a really traditional western RPG something consoles have rarely tackled....this sounds better in my opinion. why these have always been the exclusive domain of PC users... I do not know.
Thank you Bioware for making Christmas exciting again.
I think when a company pushes the envelope for complexity and freedom...glitches can be forgiven and hopefully patched in future.

PS: I don't own any of the three new machines yet. I am thinking of picking up the Wii this Christmas though...if any happen to be about. :/

Being used to PC gaming for many years I reckon I can survive a few random bits of stutter and delayed texture loading. However, I have heard horror stories about your teams AI and (from the above review) questionable level design in the combat sections.

Having not played KoToR 1, I can't comment on Bioware's first...but I have played KoToR 2 and absolutely loved it. So I guess my only question before considering this a must-buy title is...Does the quality of exploration and character development truly make up for an obviously flawed combat system?

If all this game turns out to be is a nifty chat game with some jaw-dropping outerspace visuals plus a fairly standard plot - then a whole year of hot anticipation is, sadly, wasted.

P.S. the review didn't elaborate much on the exploration other than the first landing on what sounds like a rather bland planet...please someone say this is better than that.

Unlikley. If you've played the KOTOR games on Xbox or PC you will know its a problem with the engine they are using and the sheer scale of the game.
The framerate is too obvious and I only noticed it while spinning the camera around in an elevator.
The slow texture loading can apparently be fixed by clearing your HDD cache.

Well to start things, the combat system is great. Its sort of a mix between Splinter Cell gun fights, Gears of War's use of cover and abit of Rainbow Six style squad control.
The character development is amazing. If you've played KOTOR 1 then its similar to that in the aspect that you get really attached to some of the characters and may even hate some of them.
At some points in the game your squad members may question your actions and leave you in an impossible situation, kill your team mate or use intimidation or charm to get your way out of it.
Then at one point during a mission you are put in another situation where you have to decide who to save between 2 of your squad members.
The exploration isn't as immense as I was expecting. You basically have about 10-15 different galaxies to explore which each have multiple solar systems. Sadly you can't explore every planet and instead survey some of them for valuable minerals for the alliance. Then you have two different types of planets you can land on, proper full scale ones with colonies on them or deserted ones which you land on with your vehicle and drive around on. These are usually used for side quests such as rescue a hostage from an enemy stronghold or investigate stuff.
The plot is also amazing as to be expected from Bioware. The first hour or so is really slow with you pretty much given time to understand the situation within the game and slowly introducing your enemy and team mates.
Like I said, I've only played 10 hours so far but this is GOTY for me already. Mario Galaxy and Bioshock can stand aside.

If you PC gamers are looking for an RPG fix, you really should pick up The Witcher as soon as you can. It's a wonderful example of PC gaming at it's finest.

I too look forward to getting Mass Effect on the PC (it better be Bioware), but I can wait - it looks good, but not revolotionary

Its 360 exclusive but going on Bioware's track record, I'd assume it'll be released on PC in about 6-12 months.

But then, according to many 360 owners, a game is still a 360 exclusive even if it's also on the PC. I've even seen Doom 3 labelled a "360 exclusive", and that was out on the PC four months before it became available for the 360.

Well, I figure it like this - PC or Xbux, chances are Microsoft are still making money from it somewhere. So I personally consider the old 'Oh, but it's not exclusive on 360! It's on PC!' defense a bit of a moot point when used in an anti-Microsoft fashion. Otherwise - Nah, they should just label them 'Console exclusives' (which is daft!) or just not bother!

Surprised to see so many people so apathetic about this game - It's Bioware! When have they ever released a bad RPG?
Artificial Idiot on 20 Nov '07
Cant wait to go on this adventure!, loved KOTOR (& not just becuase its the best Star wars game ever made!).
Bioware are so slick at story telling & the whole look & design of this game puts most other titles to shame.
I dont get the Rescent batch of reviews, like AC & Ace Combat, yer the game might not jump out the screen give you a foot massage make your dinner with a cold beer & a blow job, but they are still great games, i think people expect far too much from a game?
hollywood111 on 20 Nov '07
But then, according to many 360 owners, a game is still a 360 exclusive even if it's also on the PC.

In truth it still is 360 exclusive even if its also on PC. PC is a seperate gaming platform, the same way DS and PSP are.
Personally I'd prefer the new label that Bioshock used which said '360 & PC exclusive'. After all, both platforms are from MS.

As for this game, I just completed it clocking up just over 22 hours. I only did a couple of side quests though and I also missed out on the romantic sub-plot so im jumping back in to play again as a different class and play it as a good guy this time.
Really quality game which actually has a proper conclusion while still hinting at the sequel. Much better handled than another recent first entry into a trilogy, Assassin's Creed. Then again I expect no less from Bioware.

Mr Alex Dale.

Now, this is nothing personal so please don't take it as so. However, I suggest sticking a copy of the Yellow Pages (or something similar) down the back of your trousers as I'm about to give you a mighty bottom-kicking...

1. that's when you realise that this isn't just Jade Empire with space marines.

Never played Jade Empire, so I don't know what you mean.

2. Morality is a complex issue here; you won't sprout crap devil horns like in Fable...

Never played Fable, but I presume that there's more to 'moral decisions' than be truly evil or be a saint?

3. These sections are a strange mix between Ghost Recon, Gears of War and (promise us you won't run away) Perfect Dark Zero...

Eh? So I've got to buy these three games first before I can find out what the combat system is like. A combat system that sounds truly awful but doesn't really detract from the overall game.

I'm very confused. I don't buy many 360 games, but I was looking forward to Mass Effect (hooray for Sci-Fi RPG with no Lightsabres - and yes, I do know what a Lightsabre is, so I'm not a total castaway). But have no idea how it plays. Isn't that the point of the review?

4. Imagine trying to tackle a Flood invasion with Ghost Recon's handling, and you're halfway there.

I don't want to get too deep into this, but it's difficult to imagine something of which you have no experience. Therefore, sadly, to get 'halfway there' is well beyond my umwelt.

5. we've been a bit down on the shooting sections, but the truth is that they're perfectly fine if you take the time to approach it as Bioware want you to.

Ahh, so, the shooting sections are crap (although I've still no idea why), but can be good if I take the time to approach them as intended....which is? How am I supposed to approach the combat?

6. Mass Effect isn't the laser-spewing monolith of a game we expected it to be..

Or never expected to be...I think. Were we expecting a shooter with RPG elements or what?

So, I was looking forward to this game, and I am aware of Bioware's heretige. But I still haven't a clue about how this game plays.

It's set in space, in the future (I guess) and no doubt set out to save the galaxy or something...but how does the game play?

It's all well and good giving a hybrid of examples to those familiar with those games. Well, actually, it's not because that's just being lazy.

Would you be so kind as to re-write the review again so I can get an impression of what the game is like to play, which should then, hopefully help me in my decision as to whether to buy the game or not.

Other way around actually Wink RPG with *some* shooter elements... So I'm baffled as to why everyone is making such a big deal about the combat, as that isn't the main selling point. In my opinion, at least.

I'm just gutted that anything bad has been said about this at all.

I'll still be picking it up, but isn't it sad that all these big hitters have failed to deliver on some level?

Assassin's Creed, Kane & Lynch, Mass Effect, Timeshift, Drake's Fortune on PS3, they've all fallen slightly short of what was expected of them.

I can't help feeling is the hype machine responsible? I mean were these games ever going to live up to our expectations?

Certainly, it's better to have a flawed classic than a contrived also-ran, but I'm a little saddened that this game isn't the 10/10 stuff I thought it'd be.
Mappman on 23 Nov '07
Well, I was at the supermarket this afternoon, flicking through EDGE magazine (which gave it 7, which means sod all from EDGE) and read the Mass Effect review. Same story, mentions the combat being a cross between Gears of War, Ghost Recon and something else I'd not heard of. So that was about as useful as t**s on a fish as well.

In the end, the game was only Ł32 so I got it anyway, even though the new Zelda game was out for the DS and UT3 was Ł25 for the PC. I really fancied an RPG.

Still, 2 reviews and both of them useless Rolling Eyes

This game is not perfect. Neither were KOTOR,KOTOR2 or Jade Empire.
But they were all excellent games! Very Happy

Great game, yes has a few bugs but nothing major, have a crack. But please don't whine if you were expecting a gears of war type experience, anyone who likes Bioware games will be at home here

PC fanatics stop bloody going on will ya, put ya hand in your pocket and just buy a 360 instead of hoping one day half of these games will be released for ya top of the line 2K machine, it probably will in about a year with extra content by which time us heretics will have finished the game 5 times over without stopping every 5 minutes to tweak the graphic options.
Oneohfour on 24 Nov '07
Yep, I have a 360 and a Wii for precisely that reason. Whilst my ultra PC is my main platform, some games are just better on a console.
Aircool_212 on 24 Nov '07
I was able to play the game for 10 mins before it crashed and my xbox got the 3 red flashing lights...Ah what it is to live my life at this moment in time.

By the way, the game made my consoles dvd drive run at a faster (and more strained) speed, i think that may have been the reason - anyone else experienced this?

Damn good RPG. For once, you can play the role of the lead character in the same way you would a PnP RPG.

hello everyone. i recently found out from a friend of mine about this advertising company, transcendent innovations, that has a series of websites that have been proven to give away free gifts. some of their websites include sites for ipods, ps3s, xboxes. this site, however, is one they just opened up, and they're giving xbox 360 elites. i was very skeptical at first, until my friend actually got one (did some research online and found out they get a lot of press for being one of the only legit websites).
the way it works is this:
where most sites like this require you to sign up for a bunch of stupid offers, this only requires you to sign up for one. the catch here is that you earn the 360 by referring people. by clicking on this link:

i am referring you to that website. if you sign up and complete one offer (i recomend the stamps.com offer, because its pretty simple and free) you will be listed as someone i have referenced. for the 360 elite, you only need 9 refrences. i already got 6! if you want the 360 plus 2 free games, it'll require a few more references (im in a rush, trying to get it before christmas.) i recommend you do what i did and research this company: transcendent innovations inc. they're well known to be legit. the reason they're able to give away so much free stuff ($3,200,000 so far) is because they make serious bank in advertisement deals for the offers we complete. also, the way i looked at it was this-
best case scenario: free xbox360 elite (no 3 red lights, 120 GB hard drive!)
worst case: you end up with $5 worth of free stamps.

i hope you come to the same conclusion i did!

What? That you should p**s off from this forum with your advertising crap firmly tucked up your anus?

Show your face around our gaff again, and I'll give you a virtual shoe-ing that you won't forget.

This game is not perfect. Neither were KOTOR,KOTOR2 or Jade Empire.
But they were all excellent games! Very Happy
If you like RPG games then just get it!!!!

Absolutely. I've clocked in about 6 hours so far over a couple of sittings, and loving every minute of it. If you liked the way KOTOR played, then this is your cup of tea. (IMHO).
