COD4 dev put its "best coders" on PS3

Infinity Ward stresses the importance of platform focus
"We had our best programmers on the PS3 [version of Call of Duty] and it shows," Infinity Ward studio head Vince Zampella has bellowed. He's been explaining why Sony's edition has a bigger online capacity (24 max players vs 360's 18) and, according to those with cyborg-eyes, improved visuals.

"We had two separate teams working on both versions from the start," Zampella says, "Most developers only focus on a single platform, then quickly port the game over to another one. You don't get very good results that way".

Zampella was speaking to PSM3 magazine as part of a feature examining PS3 game delays. His words should give Sony fanboys some much-needed ammo. Grab a copy of the Christmas edition of PSM3, issue #95, on sale from tomorrow, for the full exploro-feature.

So the ps3 had the best coders and didn't work properly whilst the 360 had second choice coders and worked fine. I cant honestly say who thats worse for, sony or infinity ward.
DAEDALUS79 on 21 Nov '07
I thought both the console versions had an 18 player max?

Not that it matters, it's hell of a hectic game even with only 10 people in the room.
monkey_puncher on 21 Nov '07
I wouldnt say it's fanboy ammo considering if you've actually ever played both versions there's no way you could notice the difference as i don't notice anything.

I think infinity ward have done a great job getting all platforms out on the same day as the majority of developers are just making half bottomd ports to try and rake in some extra cash.

Online connectivity was an issue for me though but hopefully that's all been sorted now. But having more people on a map isnt always a good thing it can make maps to busy and sometimes makes it hard to win team games.

It's easily the best FPS this year without doubt.

I dont really care to get into a discussion of which version of the game looks or runs best, all I wanted to say was:

Full credit to Infinity Ward on developing three top quality versions of the game for three different platforms without taking any shortcuts and then blaming it on the hardware.

A top class job well done. Cool

Now if only some devs (*chough*, Valve, most of EA's internal devs and some of Ubisofts dev teams, *chough*) could take a page from Infinity Ward book instead of blaming their own lazyness and dislike for different coding platforms on the hardware.

What about the people who cant hook their ps3 online their games wont get patched

You sir, are speaking out of your bottom (probably not the first time). 360 had problems online, same as ps3. That is SERVER problems not user hardware problems.

I thought Xbox Live didn't use a developer's own servers? Or maybe I'm wrong?
Petebrolly on 21 Nov '07
Fair play to them, if they had two teams working on both instead of porting then that must have cost them more money, yet they did it anyway to make a better product. Good on them I say.

Ermm, let me get this straight, people who cant get online with their PS3's want to patch the online part of a game which they'll never be able to play online, until they can get their PS3 online, right???

Tell me if you just get a Idea symbol blinking above your head? WinkRazz

i must be missing something Confused i only ever get max 8 people on the battles i play (free for all). have i missed some settings somewhere or does the 20 plus go on team?

Makes a nice change for a developer to make the effort with a Ps3 version of a multi-format game. The single player is awesome and worthy of repeated plays.

Surprised to see the almighty 360 can only run 18 player matches though...This time Ps3 owners get more for less with Sony's free online service.

Must be because the Ps3 has less memory... Wink

I think its probably the way Xbox Live is setup to be honest. "Have to pay for it", "PSN is free"...blah blah blah, I know... Very Happy

team deathmatch on the 360 only has 12 players which is enough for me....on the bigger games with 18 people gets to be too much of a gunfest......for 24 players though i would want bigger maps
metallicorphan on 21 Nov '07
So the PS3 version had the best coders? and the PS3 is the more powerfull console? So how come it looks the same as the 360 version? Wink

And why can't 360 gamers play against PS3 gamers? That would be fun... Twisted Evil
ted1138 on 21 Nov '07
Those PS2 pads they have on PS3 are no way as ergonomic as the 360 pad.

So... playing FPS on the PSŁ isn't as good. That's just fact.

I don't want or need more than 18 players online. I'm from the era of Quake 3 Arena, so big maps with loads of people equals a crap game in my experience. 6 Player CO-OP would have been interesting though.
crashlock on 21 Nov '07
yep, best coders on the PS3, thats why the PC version supports 32players, lol, oh yeah, he's being interviewed for a PS magazine
lmimmfn on 21 Nov '07
First of all, job well done by Infinity Ward for making a quality modern day war game that performs equally on all 3 formats.
Secondly, due to the apparent difficulty of developing for PS3 they would need to use their most experienced programmers. It obviously worked as there was no delay unlike many multi-format PS3 games recently.
As for online play, well its all down to the servers and net code which determines the max number of player possible.
LIVE is a service you pay for and all the developers (bar EA) use the servers MS maintain using the money we pay for LIVE. This means very little hassle for the developer but sadly we connect P2P meaning it all depends on the users connections. LIVE has set the standard at something like 512kb upload meaning its very unlikley we will have 32 player games unless the net code is something special.
PS3 is a free service and the developers have to use their own servers which they must pay for and maintain themselves. This usually means that you can have a greater number of people playing at once as its upto the developer to set the required upload speed.
PC on the other hand uses dedicated servers meaning anythings possible.

I agree, good point, PS3 is suffering with a lot of delays. I dont get his comment on experienced programmers though, simply because those considered experienced would be platform specific and in this case would have been those that had experience with the PS3( experienced architects i would understand but not programmers ). My guess is its a happy comment for a platform specific magazine

From a PR point of view this numpties comments are to say the least questionable, he doesn't work for HMR&C as a Public Relations Officer does he? (where's that package ffs?

Can't we all just shut up and just enjoy this brilliant game already.

"Oh my version is better than yours!"

Shut up and just play the damn game Mad

It's brilliant! If you have a PC get it! If you have a PS3 get it! If you have an Xbox get it!

Not going to change your stance if you hate FPS games but if you enjoy them treat yourself.
