There's little over four weeks until Christmas and if any of the three platform holders has realised there's money to be made, it's Sony.
Guardian Unlimited has revealed details of the Japanese outfit's holiday campaign, which kicks off with a PlayStation 3 television ad that promotes the console as an entertainment center that plays and stores music, films and photos. No surprise there then.
Sony is also reported to be spending almost $2 million to promote three key titles, including sure-fire girlfriend and granny hit Singstar, which is in the shops on December 7.
The theatrical ad, called "The Entertainers" will feature a magician, his assistant and a plucky acrobat all trying to promote the different features of the PS3. ""The new campaign is designed to showcase the wealth of entertainment available on PlayStation 3," explains SCE UK marketing man Alan Duncan.
Of course, it's not the first time platform holders have taken the multimedia angle when marketing their consoles, but UK analysts believe it's an essential move to differentiating the PS3 from the competition.
"To compete in such a competitive market it is important for Sony to get a multi-media message out there to differentiate the product from rivals," said games analyst Piers Harding-Rolls.
Either way, they can't possibly be as bad as Microsoft's Scene It? ads.
center that plays and stores music, films and photos
Sigh. They just dont know themselves what to advertise it as do they?
Do Sony really think people will want to spend Ł300+ on a PS3 when their 10 year old PC's can already do that type of thing?
At least advertise it as a games console first adding you can do these things. & stop making your games adverts more an advertisement for 'blu-ray' than the actual game.

The PS3 is a blue ray player? I would never have guessed.
don't they get it! nobody wants a thing that controls all you photos, films , games, music etc in one unit. the odd blue ray film ok but the rest just doesnt work. manipulating photos needs to be done on your pc or direct with a photo printer. not faffing about in your lounge in front of the tv to print a photo via the network attached to a pc running windows media. is is me or do people actually do this.
CVG, PLEASE link to relevant sources. See the ad in question that should have been linked to, here, but I recommend not after you've just eaten. It's so bad you'll be bringing back yesterday's meal.
This is where Kaz Hirai's regional autonomy strategy fails: Once one of the regions is so set in its ways/determined to flush money on pish, than be able to come to understand how the product is perceived, then marketing to that. Now is not the time in a console's life cycle to be offering anything but the core message: "It plays games. You might like some of these. And new movies, too - they're good as well!"
SCEE need to realise that their vision of the PS3 as the great home media box isn't here, yet. The reason they see things differently to everyone else, is probably because their R&D dept. is a mere phone call away. They can see the bigger picture/strategy. WE CAN'T, and even less so the typical Christmas buyer. Poking their heads out of Sony towers and taking a gander at their platform from the consumer's viewpoint I'm convinced would do them no end of good.
maybe its just me then, I personally use my PS3 for Games (yes), heavenly sword, cod4, drakes and assasins creed at the moment. I watch blurays and upscaled standard dvs regularly, and I have a big collection of music that i listen to through my surround sound, and holiday photos which I put on straight from my camera, so I think maybe, just maybe some people do use it like that, i do, and its awsome, i nice box under my tv and that's it
These ads (and the crazy nonsense this is living-ads) are the worst decision sony ever did. They should concentrate more on the games then the multimedia stuff. There is no way (NO FRIGGIN WAY) my father would buy something like this for his music, pictures etc. You still have a gamecontroller in your hands, and non-gamers will stay away from these things.

eermmm, yer thanks for that...
Sony cant sell it as a games console because thats not its strength. If they try & sell it as a games console "Joe Bloggs" will go into a shop & say i want this PS3 games console, BUT, WAIT!? why is this games console more expensive than that other console (the 360) which has the same & plenty more games??...
Just no more blu ray ads... please I, I-I just can't take it any more
My Wii views photos from the SD card which I tried once the PC is what I used to take out red eye, etc.
For my movies I use my upscaling DVD player which plays Divx files.
For my music I have to use a dedicated CD player. PCs and consoles just do not sound the same as a dedicated high quality CD player tuned to deliver your CD collection the way the producers intended.
It's never good to have all your eggs in one basket, hence why I stay away from multi function printers
I think my 360 plays DVDs... dunno never tried it. My Xbox1 has the remote but it's never been used for movies either
All good points. & as said people tend to stay away from multi-functional hubs as they do lots of things but dont do any feature particularly well. So I still listen to my CDs through a stereo, watch DVDs on my surround sound system & play games on my Wii, 360 & to a lesser extent my PS3. Get some great games advertised like Ratchet & Clank & Uncharted. I know there is one for R&C but its more a Blu-Ray ad than game ad. 'Blu-Ray games offer more than standard games they also suck your c**k but you probably dont know what difference it makes anyway if your Joe public' f**k off!

But people already have things that do these tasks already, like a PC, Hi-Fi and DVD player, and in some cases they do the job much better than the PS3 can.
MFNICK......you sound a bit p**sed today! You're normally so cool and collected. it is Friday.
No... Roger, he's on the money.
sorry, forgot to point out, I totally agree with him.
*realises its Friday* *is chuffed at people actualy agreeing with me* *opens can of beer* *fires up a blunt* *has calmed down*
I love blu-ray man! Its like, soooo awesome
can of beer at 15:25, lucky man. i just picked up 3 crates of 1664 for 20 quid from Asda when I collected Mass Effect this morning. Guess what i'm doing tonight.....oh yeh, watching my son play Mass effect
WHY DON'T THEY USE THE AMERICAN ADS? They are superb ads, that really sell the machine for what it is. Why do we Europeans have to suffer this surrealist crap? WAKE UP SONY!!!! Tell TBWA London to get lost!!!
Cool - so I get a PS3 to view my pics on, and watch movies.
Better get a game console too, now shall I get a Wii or 360?...
360 - Mass Effect, Halo 3, Bioshock, COD4 (also plays DVD's and pics from connected PC or USB drive)
Wii - Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros, Wii Sports (also plays Gamecube games and N64 stuff, will show pics from SD cards (I assume - don't have a Wii))
PS3 - the photo viewer / Blue Ray player (also plays some games apparently)
well, COD4 is a multiplatform game, and according to this http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=176088 its better on the PS3. PS3 also has a back catalog of PS2 games thats significantly better than Gamecube's catelog. add to that Uncharted, the soon to be released Unreal Tournament 3, Tools of Destruction and Heavenly Sword, and its not nearly as lackluster a system as internet-dogma makes it out to be. throw in Blu-ray, and yeah, you have a system that easily equals the 360 in quality, given the two cost roughly the same now.

How is better on the ps3 just because they put there better coders on it, everybody knows the ps3 is a pig to program for maybe this is the reason so it didn't get delayed like every other multi release, and if you mean better by meaning broken online play and firmware conflicts needing an instant patch WOOHOO. As for ps2 back catalog NEWS FLASH most people aren't going to get to play them anyway because the 40gb version doesn't support it and with no future ps3 looking like supporting the format its a pretty lost argument DOH. As for it costing nearly the same, where have u been getting these prices, On the highstreet (u can buy anything for anything online, also Jo public will buy in a shop) the ps3 is Ł50 and a game short(Ł30-Ł40), online the gap's even bigger
