Assassin's proves new IP can work, says Ubisoft

Games industry is crying out for new content, says Ubisoft UK boss, and Assassin's Creed delivers...
Assassin's Creed proves that original IP can work and prosper in the current games industry environment, says Ubisoft UK boss Rob Cooper.

Cooper says that the games industry is crying out for new and compelling content and Ubisoft's medieval swashbuckler - which dominated the UK charts this week - proves that you don't need to be a sequel to shift serious numbers at the shops.

"I think the success worldwide of Assassin's Creed absolutely proves that new IP can live and prosper within the sequel and licensed based competition," he told MCV. "The industry is crying out for new and compelling content and we're delighted that AC has lived up to its expectations.

Despite mixed review scores, Assassin's managed to blitz the shops and become the second fastest selling new IP on an individual format since 2002's The Getaway. It also became the third fastest selling game on Xbox 360 within a weekly sales period, behind CoD4 and Halo 3 (naturally).

"The launch of Assassin's has been a huge global success," said the Ubisoft UK boss. "There are a number of factors for this in the UK. One is that the game has gripped a nation of gaming consumers.

"With licensed or sequel based titles, it's easier to know what to expect, but with Assassin's Creed there has been a ground swell of excitement since we first showed it at E3 06."

Is it even a valid argument anymore than original IP doesn't sell? Saints Row, Lost Planet, Gears of War, Motorstorm... the list goes on. Either way, we're not going to complain about less fish in the sequel pool.

do ubisoft realise it was all down to the hype they created. the graphics are outstanding but the gameplay is dire. every single level identical and the only assasinator that has to run up to his victim and start a sword fight!!! luckily i sold this on the Monday for 35 quid. mario galaxy on the other hand, i still have months of varied gamplay to look forward to.

Give me new ideas over sequels anyday, and Assasins' Creed is an amazing game.

NOT TRUE almost all of the main targets can be stealth assasinated if you use some ingenuity, which you are obviously lacking.

Did that really need to be 'proven'? Rolling Eyes

Pretty sad state of affairs if it did...

An IP is irrelevant if you have a decent idea that's executed (no pun intended) well.

But if they really agreed with this statement, Ubisoft would feel no need to build on it's success with Assassin's Creed 2 and 3, would they? Smile

We as gamers should really embrace new ip's
Otherwise we will ( as we already are) get stuck with HALO 10 COMBAT REVOLTS, NFS PROPAVEMENT 22
PGR9 INTRODUCING GOLF BUGGIES AND SHOPPING TROLLEY'S
I think you catch my drift.
Don't get me wrong some sequels are amazing and reinvent themselves, Mario and resi are 2 that come to mind.
However we need new ips otherwise this industry will just stagnate.Call of duty was very close to dying on its bottom like the medal of honour games until IW re-invented the series by bringing it up to date.
Bioshock, mass effect, assasins creed, motorstorm etc whether good or bad games are all new IP's that have sold really well and now will no doubt be getting their own sequels.
However games devs seem reluctant to release new IP's because of developement cost put them off taking the risk. The Fact that these (and others) have sold really well only gives us as gamers a better future to look forward to

Assassins is a new idea for ONE level repeated 9times and packaged as a game. It's fun. It's a good game...but damn it's repetitive.

Now excuse us while we go make our own sequels. Laughing

In regards to the industry needing new IP's they are spot on.
As for Assassin's Creed, it was a game with huge potential let down by repetitive gameplay and a stupid Matrix style plot.
Also, its no coincidence that my two fav games of the year, Bioshock and Mass Effect, are both new IP's.
Hopefully companies like EA and Nintendo take notice of this after the rather average sales of the latest Zelda and Mario games...
