Valve brings achievements to Steam

Team Fortress 2 and older games get in-game unlockables
Half-Life dev Valve will be adding more achievements to The Orange Box and other games on Steam, it revealed in reply to a fan email (as odd as that sounds).

Team Fortress 2 will be the first to receive the in-game accolades - which work in pretty much the same ways as Xbox 360 Achievements - and other Valve games such as Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life 2 will apparently follow.

"We're planning on adding achievements to all of our games you touched on in your mail," said Valve's Erik Johnson in the e-mail reply. "We're just now coming out of the post-shipping haze, so these should start showing up on Steam pretty quick here."

"We're also planning on adding a bunch more to TF2, starting with an achievement pack for the Medic in the next week or so."

It'd be pretty interesting to see the statistics behind Orange Box's achievements, as it might be one of the first examples outside of 360 of how the in-game unlockables cause fanatical game addiction. We won't play anything without them.

They are meaningless, but soooooooo good, I doubt I would have played HL2 again in the orange box on 360 after playing it two years ago, but the achievements made going back and doing various challenges alot more fun.

What is really needed now is some kinda of meta achievements, where you get an overall score for xbox, pc and what ever else decides to add them.

umm granted acheivements on steam a relitively new but they have been there since the Team Fortress 2 beta. so please dont make out thaats its all new never been done befor and just say they are expanding the system.
rixtim on 26 Nov '07
To be honest I really do think they are completely worthless. They added some in Ep2 / Portal, and I've only played them once, got a few of them and put them down.
Even the 360 ones don't hold my attention too much, when I got my 360 I printed off lists for all my games, but now looking at them, what are they worth?
I will admit that when they are a novelty they make the game(s) replayable, but once that wares off you are let with, well, a game that you will know inside out.

It's a shame Valve are adding this in, just make the games really exciting and try to break out from making them so linear, then people will buy them and keep coming back. If they are looking to compete with MS they need a good kick, just lower your prices down a bit more and you'll win, I'm sick of gimicks.

Add them to Peggle! I want everyone to know what a god I am at that game!

Ahhh, the slippery slope to pointless replayability.

I buy a game, I expect to have access to all the features. I don't want to waste hours on pointless tasks just for some bonus items etc...if I did, I'd play WoW.

I really just don't care about this sort of s**t. If I want to feel all superior, I'll just hop onto ET:QW. But keeping parts of the game locked out until you complete a pain in the bottom, timewasting task is just cheap.

Steam...you promised so much, but now have become the thing that you opposed at your conception. Dark days ahead Sad

Agreed. But what he should really do is make it play, then play in reverse before repeating. so you basically get and infinite loop without that jarring cut at the end...

This isn't a big deal. Achievements are throw-away little bonuses, nothing more. They're not meant to be a core part of the experience. If you're the sort of person who obsesses about the need to complete every single last achievement even though you don't enjoy it, then you have OCD & the problem is your's, not the game's.
Mogs on 26 Nov '07
Yes, if only there was a mysterious, magical page somewhere on the internet where we could gleam at least some nugget of information on the achievements.

Wait!

I have TF2 on 360 and on PC, but I mostly play it on 360, so everytime I play it on PC I have to wait 5-10 minutes while it uploads the latest upgrade Mad , so this just means more waiting to me, Rolling Eyes .

How is that in any way relevant?

Because with steam, everytime you start a game that reqiyres it, you have to wait for it to download and install the latest upgrades/add on to that game, and that takes time, time that you could be using to play the game, and if the upgrade/add on is of no use to you, then it's a total pain in the bottom m8, that's what.... Mad
ted1138 on 26 Nov '07
This is about achievements, what you're talking about is something completely different. And it sounds like you've got something wrong with your version of Steam. It updates from time to time, but it by no means does it every time you load it up.

That depends on how often you start it up.

The achievements in Portal/ HL2 are a good addition but to me remain pretty meaningless ... However TF2 is completely different where, due to its high re playability, they add quite a lot to the gameplay ... Trying to get an extra kill for your sentry, defend a map without giving up a capture point etc ... gives new challenges to an already fun game

http://www.steamgames.com/status/ep2/achievements.php

does that mean that 0.5% of players have OCD and got squished all the grubs in EP2? Oh no, i think i am one of them.
I need help...

This is the reason why it's all a load of donkey cobblers...

I don't want some idiot ignoring the 'team game' just to get some pointless award. Anyway, if BFx has taught us anything, it's that people will find an exploit to get such achievements (especially on PC where a hack could easily help you out) and add nothing to the experience. In fact, they detract from the experience.

Slippery slope time. It's not a good idea.

You know what we'll end up with.... vacant games where the only real challenge is to unlock the awards. Next thing you know, the only point to a game will be getting a high score. I thought that level of gameplay was all but dead and buried decades ago Mad

I completely agree here. high scores / endless endless gimmicks. when will this world cease to be a never ending stream of pointless gimmicks! ffs.

just because the ADHD generation of mindless PS3 players need something to alleviate the crushing bordedom of their dayglow bloom nonsense sans gameplay, doesn't mean they should patronise us PC gamers any further.

ARRGGHH, i thought as a race we were meant to be getting smarter? why on earth does everything in this world feel me with an impending sense of doom and the feeling that EVERYTHING is just getting more stupid, or designed for those who are retarded?

and that, the whole idea that bits of the game that I PAID for are locked to me until i play for x amount of hours, or get x amount of kills. they can fornicate themselves with a spoon.

I don't really think that's a valid argument. Achievements are something you can ignore completely if you want - at least the Steam ones you can, I can't vouch for 360 achievements. I wouldn't have got nearly the same amount of play time out of Portal if it wasn't for the achievements, which, for me, shows that they're a good idea.

When we get onto multiplayer achievements, we're on a rather slippery slope. Whereas in single player, you're only wasting your own life, in multiplayer you could be wasting others'. Most of the TF2 achievments were rather well thought out, in my opionion - they either promote teamwork, or skill (for the lone characters), which can't really detract from the experience for others. And if anyone's that desparate to get achievements, they can go on an empty server and clear the levels themselves.
ArchieUK on 27 Nov '07
Im outraged at some of you bashing on valve, ACHIEVEMENTS CAN ONLY MAKE THINGS BETTER. YOU CAN IGNORE THEM COMPLETELY IF YOU WANT, SO YOUR RANTING IS COMPLETELY UNJUSTIFIED. Achievements are an awesome system to bring into pc. yes theyre meaningless, but i found myself wanting more and trying my hardest to get them. They DEFINATELY play a big part in games and i feel they will be with us in the future. im pretty sure theyve hit the nail on the head here - achievements? bring them on valve!
