Star Trek MMO - set phasers for casual?

Acquisition of the IP by a new company could mean new direction for Star Trek Online
Star Trek MMO, Star Trek Online, has apparently switched target audience following the acquisition of the property by what's reportedly a media company looking to break into videogames.

This follows the liquidation of the assets of the game's developer Perpetual Entertainment in October, according to ShackNews.

Says the site, a well-placed source has informed it that "Along with the acquisition comes a partial retargeting of Star Trek Online to what our source describes as a 'more casual' experience".

It's speculated this could mean that the unknown company now in charge of Star Trek Online could opt for a micro-transaction model for the game rather than use the traditional monthly subscription method.

Wonder how much the USS Enterprise would cost...

Bah!!! Hated Star Trek, only good thing about it was that the Amiga did the special effects on the TV show...

I changed my mind! I love Star Trek! Shocked

A lot can be done with the Star Trek universe for an MMO game. With the large base of "trekkies" out there this could be a potential goldmine.

set phasers for casual? hahah brilliant.

Ain't you thinking of Babylon 5 that had its rendering done on an Amiga?

That did too. Star Trek and Babylon 5 had their effects done with the Amiga.

They used Lightwave which was originally shipped with the A2000 Amiga. It wasn't ported to the PC until 95/96, by that time Star Trek TNG had ended (1994). Wink

Unfortunately that is the latest fad. I haven’t seen an original MMO in years just fad chasers that last a year or too, just to be replaced by the latest fad.

Last original MMO I saw was Wish, still don’t know what actually happened to it Crying or Very sad

A star trek MMO Shocked , ewwww.........

Well, looks like another game for the toilet before its even been made.

Hasn't anyone learned their lesson yet? You can't charge money for a game after you've bought the client unless you deliver big time. Unless you're Korean of course...

I mean, how many MMO's have made the big time and actually have a large enough user base to still make money?

hahaha .. that's EXACTLY what I said when I saw the headline. But seriously, if any MMO would suffer crapitis from "casualisation" it would have to be Star Trek. Fail.

I'm totally resisting ALL MMOs until the Firefly MMO comes out ... ie never! Evil or Very Mad
Capt_Frantic on 27 Nov '07
TBH I've never fancied this MMO... I'm a Trekkie but for some reason I just can't see this one wokring at all..

Instead of wasting time to make a Star Trek MMO they shuld give Bioware a shout to make a decent Trek RPG.

I would actually say that the last origanal mmo was auto assault but no one played it as it didnt have elves dwarfs or trolls.

Oh well at least there are the Firefly, Warhammer 40k and the Bioware Star wars MMO's to look forward to at some point
liquidphantom on 28 Nov '07
It promised to be a good game experience if you've ever enjoyed star trek but who knows now it's changed hands. One things for sure, with an ip like star trek if you don't hit just the right spot it will die faster than a rookie 'red shirt' security officer.
