Tuesday 27-Nov-2007 10:43 AM Cheaper 40GB model pointed for sales jump in North America, we reckon Christmas has got something to do with it as well...
In even more sales willy waving, Sony Computer Entertainment America has said that PlayStation 3 sales have increased by (exactly) 298 percent since November 2 in North America.
The platform holder puts the jump in sales down to the availability of the cheaper 40GB PS3 model, as well as the beefier 80GB option in the shops.
The fact that it's the biggest month of the year for game releases probably helped as well, we reckon.
Sony says that total numbers for all PlayStation products rose 178 percent during the holiday, Thanks Giving.
Based on data from the "top 10 retailers in North America," the PSP was up 136 percent for the week and the PS2 shot up a massive 287 percent. There's till life in the old box yet, then.
Sony's Japanese outfit bragged similar sales success earlier this week, when the PSP Slim & Light cleared a million units in the Far East.
No word from Europe yet, but we're predicting shameless sales bragging in 3, 2, 1...
Whats the figures for the others for the same period? Otherwise it just looks like Christmas shopping. Of course, they wii would sell more if they bloody made more.

Should be the same. Like I said: It was Black Friday. Thousands of shops open early and put out crazy offers. There are offers for PS3s with free games, movies, controllers etc. Hell, I think you get 20 free blu-ray movies in one store. Movies you pick yourself.
Why do you write in such a cynical tone wrt Sony. What did Sony ever do to you except build the best TV's ever built, invent portable music, the floppy disc, the compact disc, re invented gaming. Sony seems driven on principle, never afraid to define new standards and not take the easy option of following others. So what if VHS won that format war, you dont hear Sony crying about it, everybody knows Betamax was the better standard, the broadcasters continued to use it for years. Get over your problem, you dont have to buy any Sony brand, its a free world, buy some other crap instead.
I have to admit im one of the shameless people that have recently bought a PS3. I was going to wait until next year when some decent games arise but Sony's dirty tactic of dropping the only worthwhile model (60GB version) forced me to make a rash decsion and grab one before the only place I would find one is Ebay. There's basically no decent exclusives on PS3 worth spending my money on at the moment so until some arise, mine's going to be used as a Blu-Ray player.

You would say that though wouldn't you .
Re-invent gaming, not likely, all that comes to mind is the dual analogue control.

Sony AND Philips created the CD. Sony do not make the best TV's anymore. They only designed the 3.5" floppy, having no doubt ripped open IBM's 5 1/4 floppy to see what it was all about. Sony also have a penchant for 'closed' systems where they can screw down everyone else on licenses.

Duals yes, analogue controls were long before them however.
Best TVs? I'm sure Samsung and Panasonic would have something to say to that
Floppy disc? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_disc#Origins.2C_the_8-inch_disk That will answer that question on who invented it!!
The CD? I'm sure Philips was exteremely involved in that too so I can't give Sony all the credit there.
Before you go into Sony bottom-kissing mode. Do some research please!!!
PS3 is a good console but Sony didn't invent everything!

Take into account I also do my gaming on 360 and PC. Uncharted isn't really my sort of thing. Rachet & Clank is a poor man's Jak & Daxter. UT3 I have for PC. Not all that interested in Warhawk. Haven't sampled any PSN games and they wouldnt sway me to buy a console... The sort of games im waiting for are the likes of MGS4, Tekken 6, FF 13 etc, ie blockbuster games that are worth buying a console for. I don't have the sort of money to waste on anything in between.
I've got Resistance and Heavenly Sword that came free with my console. I wouldn't have bought those games but they'll have to see me through until next year.

For me the only games I'm waiting on are the new GTA and GT5. MGS really isn't my type of game, neither is FF or any of the rest mentioned.
For me to be fully satisfied in all the genres I enjoy this gen I'll have to own all 3 consoles. Last gen I just had an Xbox1 and PC and pretty much had all I needed.
This gen I'm getting my platforming fix from the Wii, driving fix from the 360 and FPS fix from the PC.
I'd like a PS3 for a fix of GTA and GT. However if GTA is coming on the PC or 360....

GTA4 is also on 360 with exclusive DLC content. All the media so far has also been from the 360 build. It will almost vertainly be released on PC at some point as well. That's why I didn't mention GTA4 as I'll be picking that up for 360 along with any other multi-format game unless a review indicates that a PS3 version is better for whatever reason.

I'll still wait. I prefer it on the PC for aiming reasons if not then I'll have to pick up the 360 one
Ok that's sorted, thanks! I'll wait for a price cut and GT5 now then.
Especially with the TG test track being in there, it looks like it will be awesome.
maybe the 360 versions needs dlc coz they can't fit it all on the disc....? ...joke!
Heh. My real concern is if the PS3's memory can handle a game of this scale. Ubisoft had problems with Assassin's Creed and thats sectioned off area's where as GTA is free roaming... It will certainly take some expertise either way as they will have to use the best compression technology for the 360 version and make some sort of compromise for the PS3's memory.

I think that re-inventing gaming goes to Nintendo between the DS and Wii, as they both are radically new ways to actually play the games. Or if you disagree, the NES, as it basically saved the game industry from disappearing outright after Atari's financial collapse in the early 80s, as well as brought about the early controller with directional pad, since everything before that pretty much was a joystick.

If there is one thing most people can agree on, it is that fanboys are of a slightly lower IQ than the rest of us.
The reasons for this are that: -only an idiot could be loyal to/love a company/corporation -only an idiot could blindly continue to purchase (and defend) the products of a company regardless of the quality -only an idiot could believe that every single aspect/thing about their company/company's product is better than the competitors
So, fanboys are the least intelligent of posters on these boards. Problem is, most fanboys are in denial, and don't think they are fanboys.
However, detecting a fanboy is always made easier when they have a name that makes it so obvious they are indeed a fanboy that you wonder if, away from these boards, they stumble around all day with the word IDIOT stamped on their forehead.

Again, this doesn't actually tell us anything good really. They need to give us numbers, as percentages give us nothing. 300% could actually mean it is still selling less than 360 and Wii.
could Vectra and Vulcanraven just get a bed please? (nothing worse than verbal masturbators)
Agreed. These guys are serious Xbots. Funny thing is I just looked at the dark side of live article and guess what? There they ae on the 360 forums with their positive only view on the 360 rather than trashing the PS3 on the PS3 forums.
Vulcan Raven actually says on one PS3 forum that has bought a PS3 and only uses it fo Blu Ray (not warhawk or gaming). Sounds like a bit of BS as if you have a PS3 you really understand what a good and versatile machine is.

Yup, It's all that and a mean lean, grilling machine! Fnarrr!
All i've got to say is that after all the bulls**t sony have spouted, the lack of games and the ridiculous prices- fair play to them. They're finally sorting themselves out... though the bulls**t remains.
But then again- I wonder what the game to console ratio is? Are people just buying it as Blu Ray player? It's certainly cheap in that regard. I don't think Ratchet and Clank is good enough to warrant that many sales somehow.
Anyway- I'm not interested in any other consoles at the moment- Halo 3, Mass Effect and Bioshock? Anything else I play this generation is just a bonus.
The Wii and 360 still sold more, though their increases were not as great, percentage wise.
Im getting a PS3 for xmas. It doesnt really have any great games at the mo, but it will in the future, and i want it as a blu-ray player aswell. Prob get ratchet and clank, uncharted, and maybe something else, depending on what bundles i see.
Already got a 360 so will be getting the multi format games on that.
Different games appeal to different people. The 360 has never appealed to me (though i am no fan boy) because i have grown up from MegaDrive to PSone so i have trust in SONY.
The Wii sucks completely. I was one of the idiots who got caught up in the hype and brought one at launch. I have four games, all of which i got last year, completed my February and all of which were released on launch.
The PS3, Resistance online was over-rates, Call of Duty rocks despite server problems (rank went from 43 to 11), Warhawk is ace, has great demos, and i am looking forward to Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted for Xmas, 2 games i was looking forward to for ages. Next year i have UT3 (not exclusive i know), Tekken, MGS4, Killzone 2, all of which i like. And more.
There may be 360 fans here who don't like those games but news shock, i don't like Halo Bioshock is decent and i am a little jealous of Ninja Gaiden 2 being exclusive but i don't care. If all companies stay close sales wise we all get better games instead of petty arguing that should be done between companies, not fans.
PSŁ sold 6 million last July and since then i have heard of 130% increase in sales and 300%. But i also want figures.
But stop yer bitching all and realise games are to play.
So sales are 300% in the same time as thanks giving (biggest holiday in the states), but yet these figures mean nothing without context, i bet you that Wii and 360 and DS, still had a higher weekly sales total than PS3, PS2, PSP did, no doubt about it sony are shifting more units, now they have dropped the price, that bad news is their way behind to begin with and still dont shift as many per month either, so it's going to have to drop the price again for the machine to match rival sales.
But good news for PS3 game starved owners, maybe this will get developers making better multiformat games for the system, after all half life orange box is unplayble ive heard on the system.
Extrapolating from the previous months sales figures, despite Sony's hype the PS3 was still a distant third, selling only about 300k consoles. Which is really nothing to brag about.
