Golden Axe PS3: First details

Next-gen update shifts focus to free-roaming dragon riding, with a sprinkling of combat
The first details on Sega and Secret Level's long announced Golden Axe update have been revealed in the latest issue of PSM3.

If you're looking for a straight update you're probably going to be disappointed, because the classic bruiser has been pretty much completely re-imagined in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 update.

First off, you now play as one Amazonian hero, the scantily clad Tyris Flare, instead of the original game's trio of fantasy stereotypes. Gillus the dwarf and Ax Battler are still in the game, says PSM3, but only as supporting cast.

Secondly, and probably the biggest change of the lot, is instead of straight-forward bruising Golden Axe: Beast Rider's focus shifts over to free-roaming environments and - surprise, surprise - the various beasties you can ride and battle on. There are five in total, ranging from the light and nippy to hulking, slow dragon-ites with scales the size of toilet seats.

The traditional hack and slash combat is still there and if you're tired of fumbling around on a dragon you can hop on foot and perform combos whenever you like - plus Tyrus has a range of spells at her disposal.

The open environments are looking rather nice, but as always it's going to come down to how decent Golden Axe's combat system is when it finally comes out next year.

We're expecting media to hit the net shortly, but for now you can pick up issue 95 of PSM3 - The PlayStation 3 Magazine in the shops now.

Where is the most important bit? Do we still kick the little elves for magic and power-ups? They better put that in Mad

panzer dragoon zwei and saga were 2 of the best games on the saturn. the graphics (saga especially) were amazing! just think what they could do now! the atmosphere was imense in these games. saga was the best RPG ive ever played. zwei one of the best shooters.

Oh yes. 2 of my favourite games of al time. Have you played Orta on Xbox? That is truly beautiful. Some of the best graphics that the big black box put out & had all the classic gameplay in tact.

Sounds like tat to me! Probably another hack 'n slash wasted opportunity.

Sadly methinks that the Panzer train has sailed, doesn't look likely that we'll hear from that again... Sad

the first golden axe was decent the others were s**t this new golden axe will be crap like all the other hack n slash games these days.

I'm hoping that it will be good, Sega are the masters of gaming (My title for them) and if anyone can pull it off they can! (I hope)

Sega arent masters of games anymore they used to be but its been a while since they have had a world class game out

Sadly i agree. Post Dreamcast they have gone so far downhill. I dont ever see them recapturing their old magic.

They should split their internal teams into AM1-9 again and have them each working on different games.

Agreed.

The days of the original Golden Axe, Outrun, Afterburner, Space Harrier, Virtua Racing and Sega Rally have passed.

I'd be very happy with arcade perfect PSN download versions of these particular games, with online modes and high score tables added of course. I'd really to see some of the old US Gold games on PSN with online modes as well.
Lord PS3 on 28 Nov '07
Sadly it's true! Their games just haven't had that magic any more. The new Sega Rally was good but it never captured the spirit of the original.

Their games used to stick out like a ferrari in a parking lot full of mondeos. Unfortunately not anymore, they seem afraid to try new things now and instead are milking the blue guy over and over.

Other franchise faves such as Alex Kidd, the cast from Streets of Rage, Bug, Clockwork Knight and a lot more are missing. Sega used to have some cool characters and were seen as the cool company.

What happened? Crying or Very sad If I see another Sonic Rush game and no new Daytona I'll go crazy!
vectra on 28 Nov '07
Daytona USA. Great game. Of course there was (is!) a really good version on the Dreamcast. but seeing as online is now the big thing, it would be a good time to revisit for the PSN. It seems Sega's first forays into 3D were very successful. Time to innovate again. VR style glasses or proper 3D screens where the view changes as you move around it?
Lord PS3 on 29 Nov '07
I don't like the sound of this new GOlden Axe. Free roaming? two playable characters are now unplayable? WTF. This isnt golden axe, its a f**king RPG!

Golden Axe is one of my favourite games ever and it sounds like they have ruined it.

If they want to f**k around with the forumla maybe they should remake the original with better graphics first.

And another thing, whats wrong with doing it side scrolling? Golden Axe and Streets of rage are side scrolling beat em ups and are both two of my favourite games ever, they need to come back. Just because a console can do 3D doesnt mean you have to get rid of 2D completely. Games just aren't as good as they were in the 80s-90s

I think their last world class game was Jet Set/Grind Radio.
Wasn't US Gold a company that used to port Capcom games to home computers?
