US DS-loving types mostly see mobile games as running on underpowered processors with rubbish buttons, and don't give them the time of day. Yet, shockingly, EA is making more money from mobile games than both the PS3 and PSP.
In a recent financial report for the third quarter of this year, figures revealed that EA made $37 million (around £18m) from mobile gaming, beating by a large margin PS3 profits of $17 (£8m) million. Even the equally portable PSP couldn't match up to mobiles, making EA $21 million (£10m) in the same period.
Clearly, the sheer size of the mobile user base has a lot to do with it, but it's surprising nevertheless.
Xbox 360, meanwhile, has no problems, raking in a massive $218 million (£106m) of EA's total $640 million (£311m) profit. PS2 comes in second ($73m, £35m), Wii third ($59m, £29m), and DS fourth ($47m, $23m).
These figures, on the not-so-good side of things, only show a 5.7 percent growth for EA, compared to its fast-growing rivals Gameloft (51 percent) and Glu (34.5 percent), according to Pocket Gamer.
Maybe its the fact that EVERYONE own a mobile phone, even people who dont own a console or computer!
And everyone knows people spend millions on absolute rubbish on their phones, hence all those annoying Jamster adverts and that crazy frog "phenomenon".
Great news heres' hoping that EA make the shift to mobile gaming only, that would suit me just fine considering the utter tosh that they are churning out lately.
Try mentioning the good stuff like the recent wordwide sales surge
What sales surge? The previous month's PS3 sales were abysmal, as people were already aware of the upcoming price slash. Unsurprisingly, when the downgraded new PS3 model was published, the sales figures were higher.
But in their marketing spin Sony talked only about percentages, and never revealed how many consoles they actually sold.
Extrapolating from the previous months sales figures, despite Sony's hype the PS3 was still a distant third, selling only about 300k consoles.
It's because PS3 owners are the only people smart enough to realise EA games are crap.
(And come on CVG, must we have an anti-PS3 article every day? Try mentioning the good stuff like the recent wordwide sales surge)
CVG don't have to mention things like that, because there's a million forums all over the web with stupid f**kers (like yourself) who read these figures, made up by some c**k at Sony, then you spend the rest of your pitiful life constantly bang on about it!!!
Nice article. Makes an interesting read finding out how the biggest developer rakes in its cash. Seems like the 360 is the 'new PS2' this gen, meaning its the platform of choice to make a tidy profit and reach the highest userbase. PS3 is just to expensive to develop for and the userbase isn't there in order to recoup enough profit to make it worthwhile. Wii on the other hand, well I thought it would be more profitable considering its essentially last-gen hardware and has a userbase to rival 360. PS2 still has some life in it from the looks of things. You can pick them up for about £50 now so as long as developers keep pumping out some games, there's money to be made. PSP is a lost casuse in my opinion. I wouldn't bother developing for that. DS is something they need to take seriously. Just put some casual games out there ad you're rolling in the £. Where's the PC info though. Would have been interesting to see how the likes of C&C, The Sims and Crysis are doing for EA...
Its about time EA woke up and smelt the coffee. 15 years ago they produced some of the best games around. Sadly today they produce games for the POP Idol style gamer and are more interested in profit before what makes a good game that sells lots of copies.
People won’t shell out £40 or €60 for a game that was exactly the same as the year before, even if they do have all the rights. Its about game play and enjoyment and wowing the gamer. Talk to players to find out what they want and do some research instead of producing what’s cheapest to make and make a quick profit. That road will only last so long!!
I used to love EA, then they got mainstream, hit it absolutely huge and their customer service went straight to hell.
They became the single most arrogant and lazy software developer in the world, putting in zero effort to churn out the same game year after year and ignored every suggestion or criticism their supporters offered.
Thankfully this seems to be changing, but they still hold the licenses for most franchises out there. You can't boycott them because they have a hand in so much. They keep buying companies with a good reputation and we have to just hope they don't screw them up entirely. There is just no escape from the EA monopoly.
I hate them and refuse to buy the crappy yearly franchises, but there are some titles (like Skate) that I really want.

Completely agree with you, although I have no intension of buying any of their games until they start listening to people and start investing in new and great games. Skate does look good and maybe they have started to listen a bit. They were top of the class in the early 90's, now they are sat in the corner.

The 300 percent sales surge thats seen ps3 eclipse wii and 360 for the last 2 weeks. 360 being outsold 10 to 1 in Japan and looking like repeating that in the US. Apologies if you've just woken up from a coma or had aliens probing you for the last fortnight.

No suprise that the 360 is being outsold in Japan is it now also I think Ninty will take the USA (as Sony are ahead of Ninty these past 2 weeks in Japan) if this is anything to go by:
With higher gas prices and fuel costs, and the lukewarm expectations for the 2007 holiday shopping season, Wii and Nintendo DS might be just what Santa ordered: Thirty-five percent of consumers said they plan to spend less than they did last year, according to a survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp. for the Consumer Federation of America and the Credit Union National Association. Similarly, a USA Today/Gallup Poll showed that 25 percent of Americans expect to spend less on gifts this year than they did in 2006.
Seems like cvg are a bunch of ps3 haters. Who cares about Ea? All they do is port their left overs as they are a cheapo company who are proven in the quick fix don't care so long as we have made our money kind of people. Yes ps3 has to play catch up.Yes they need more support/exclusives,and yes they need less delays. What they don't need is cheap tat that will just help with haters and fanboys alike waiting to pounce. This is the second time in 2 days Cvg has dug up crap like this.
thats not a surprise with those high development costs for ps3. no wonder it got few good games when it scares away developers.
the only "god games" ps3 get is multi platform games. and of course that is because those games will be ignore in the company of bioshock, mass effect, gears of war and so on
thats why you get haze ps3 fanboys. can't u see it's because it bloody won't sell on the game flooded plains of xbox360, but will sell well on the dry plains of ps3

If you're going to claim such bold facts please provide linkage. While PS3 console sales have obviously boosted thanks to the price drop, I still doubt they are close to that of Wii and 360. Still, its to be expected of a console that has very little quality in terms of exclusives. Its been a rough first year for PS3 but im betting they'll start to pile the pressure on 360 and Wii mid 2008. Also, MS basically OWN the US with Nintendo being the only realistic challengers for them in that region. To claim PS3 will dominate 360 in the US just shows a lack of understanding...
As for Japan, I seriously don't know why MS bother. It's already difficult enough to try and sell a western product while there are two eastern alternatives but add to the equasion that 360 doesn't have that many games that appeal to the Japanese, the poor advertisement, rather poor Marketplace when compared to the US etc. All this means 360 will never seriously challenge Wii or PS3 in Japan. Instead it will be labeled as a 'gaijin' console and will appeal to the small minority of western game fans.
stop thinking you are so smart ps3 fanboys. because you wasted lots on a console which have bluray, and i can't see any game really need when it adds 100% to the price regarding xbox 360 is just as powerful. (and got better and more games too)
(but if you are over 30 then it doesn't matter cos u can afford all consoles......)
unfortunately you do have to care what EA do. Like it or not they are the biggest, richest publisher and developer out there. Mobile gaming will be a massive industry as EA know. Phone hardware updates every 12 months and is a great way to keep product selling unlike the console cycle which updates every 5-8 years. people are very critical of EA but nobody else develops and markets so many games every year and like it or not they sell by the shed load... I think the saying is "you get the games the general public deserve". If people are stupid enough to buy it they will keep on making it. Like it or not EA drive sales of your precious PS3 or 360 and help it become a mainstream pastime instead of a load of spotty kids sitting in their bedrooms. Maybe think about things a little deeper than your prejudices against "evil corporates" like MS or EA or you maybe just biting the hand that feeds.
make some decent games then EA! not rubbish ports, get out of bed and follow the lead from the likes of naughty dog and infinity
I whole heartedly agree. Infinity did produce an amazing port with CoD4 on PS3, even if the resolution is 1/4 of 360 (some comparisons even suggest only 1/16 of the resolution). Nevertheless, despite shoddy textures on nearby objects, it plays like a dream. Thumbs up to you Infinity.

PC got $79m, which puts it in a distant second place behind the 360.

I agree with you on not buying their games and I stopped years ago. Selling by the shedlaod? Not as many as they used to, Hence the price cuts
Plus this, surely not just for fun? http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7819&Itemid=59
Do you like Pop Idol music? I certainly dont and EA are the Pop Idol Devs of the games industry. They will realise that the market only lasts so long. Maybe they have already?
i guess this shows how crap ea is lately. they seem to be changing the conecpt of all their hit game series, some for the better, most for the worst. The fact is that xbox360 is considered the 'headline' normal console for the moment, the ps3 is sidelined in the corner with the wii. Also you have to take in account that blu-rays will cost a lot more to manufacture and write than dvds.
