Deus Ex 3 is using the new engine powering the Tomb Raider revival, the boss at Eidos Montreal has revealed.
"We chose the Crystal [Dynamics] engine because we plan to help develop this engine more and then share it back with the rest of the company, the other Eidos studios. Having that technology from the start gives us a great advantage and foundation for our coders - there are no doubts about the approach, and we have few uncertainties", Stephane D'Astous has told Develop in an interview.
"We just want to all work together on improving the same technology as we develop our game".
Speaking generally about Deus Ex 3, D'Astous admitted that it's "an incredible title to be working on" and a major challenge as a first project for the newly established Eidos Montreal studio. But he was keen to try and reassure us it's in good hands.
"All the developers working on Deus Ex 3 pretty much know the series inside and out - coming here, they were pretty aware of the opportunity and what they could do", D'Astous explained.
"We did our research to find out what worked well, what people enjoyed about it - especially the first game. The second was a success in the eyes of some, but had some ups and downs, so we've tried to identify what worked well in that game.
"Most importantly, we're extracting what worked well and can be applied now. In the five, six years since that series arrived technology has changed significantly and we have to be careful - we don't want to create more of the same. Instead we've identified the features that can be transposed well onto new technology that arrived several years later.
"It's a big mandate we have received - and we take it very seriously", D'Astous added.
The critically acclaimed Deus Ex is regarded by many as the finest PC game ever made, although sequel Deus Ex: Invisible War failed to live up to expectations.
Do yourself a massive favour and play the first game! I could never get into the second one - partly because my computer was too rubbish to play it well when it came out and partly because it just didn't grip me like the first one did.
Question is will we ever find out whether this new game is any good until we've actually handed over the readies. You know, what with it being an Eidos title and all...
Well I've just lost all faith. FPS games NEED great graphics to get any sort of attention and make it stand out. To find out its using the Tomb Raider engine, which is average at best, is a major blow for any fan of this series...

Disagree mate. The original game hardly had top graphics for the time and proved that content was way more important than eye-candy.
Anyways, this news doesn't mean much to me as never seen the new tomb raider engine but i agree with other here: Deus Ex and Tomb raider in the same sentance sounds bad
Perhaps because the Tomb Raider games on the 360 run at the distintly non hi-def resolution of 1024x600p and still have framerate issues trying to run the game at 30 fps, maybe?
Whatever, it's a pretty s**te engine to be honest, especially seeing as I can play the Tomb Raider Anniversary on my ageing PC at 1680x1050 with 4X AA and still get 60 fps 99% of the time. The engine should be more than capable of running at that speed on the Xbox 360 at proper 720p - I'm pretty sure the machine is more capable than my PC - so either the engine itself is crap or the developers are lazy so-and-sos.
At first I was a little concerned by this news, but then I thought - the original was built on a heavily modified unreal engine... Before Deus Ex, I'd never have thought the unreal engine was capable of doing what DX did with it, so as long as the team fiddling with the tomb raider engine do a good job, this mightn't be so bad.... fingers crossed...
To be fair, they said they were gonna work on the Tomb Raider engine, using it as a base. So it won't just be DX3 running off the same engine. There is still hope.
ummmm!! They're gonna have to do alot of work on this to make it work on the TR engine. TR looks OK for a 3rd person game but, in it's current state, I don't think it'll cut it for a FPS. I think they'd be better off spending some money and getting either the unreal engine 3 or the cryengine which both look incredible and probably have the scalability to look better in a year or two when the game will be released. Despite this I'm still pretty excited to see what they can get out of this franchise as the first two games, especially the first, were awesome and pretty groundbreaking for their day. Hopefully they'll stick to the fps/rpg format as it really seemed to work in the the first two games. Can't wait to get some more details on this sometime soon.
deus ex is a crap fps anyway they should just make a new tomb raider instead.
.....
You should read some of his other posts, they're priceless.
I can understand peoples concerns, my own eyebrows ventured northwards when I first read that DX would be using that engine, but like dannyfranks said, the original used a heavily modified engine so this might not be a complete disaster. Much rather they licensed the UT3 engine, but hey ho, can't have everything.
On the plus side, this game will have a huge budget, and a crack team of coders. By building on the existing Crystal Dynamics engine, then the rest of the company will end up with a cracking games engine for the games to come after Deus Ex 3.
Get Harvey Smith in, too. He clearly doesn't have any truck with half-ar$ed games, and would be just the sort of person to ensure DX3 lives up to it's promise.
This is crazy news. Denton would look stupid with oversized breasts!
Good one.
Hang on! In the original game, during the early stages of development, you were supposed to be able to play as a woman if you wanted (thus the androgenous name "J.C.". It was only as the deadline approached that they cut gender option (but kept the skin colour option as it was only a texture difference).

Denton breasts are still a possibility!

I know that. And in DX:IW you could choose your gender. But that comment was just funny.
