New Bioshock plasmids this week

Gene Tonic and plasmids expected in PC and 360 patch arriving this week
The PC and Xbox 360 versions will be patched this week, says the game's official site, and new download content in the form of extra plasmids and gene tonics.

"Both the BioShock PC Patch and the 360 Title Update will be available next week," says the Cult of Rapture official site.

"In addition to these fixes, we will be releasing downloadable content free on both Xbox Live and for the PC, with the DLC bundled into the PC Patch."

The site doesn't go into detail on what extra goodies can be expected in the DLC, but we've heard that brand new plasmids - such as a splicer-flinging Sonic Blast and a Vampire-like trick - and new gene tonics will be included.

Full details will be on the Cult of Rapture as the patches go live and if you haven't already bought the full game (you nut case) read our gushing words here.

Bioshock is the most horribly overrated game. It is frankly pretty poor and linear as a shooter, the chambers removing any sense of challenge from the game as you progress no matter what.

It's also very derivetive. Tapes = doom 3. Flying machines = Half life. Telekenesis = gravity gun etc etc. There is almost nothing new here and what was promised by the game designers never materialised.

The one thing that saves it is the story and atmosphere which are incredible, I enjoyed listening to the tapes much more than actually playing the game and wished it wasn't actually an fps but a proper adventure game.
Real shame. No amount of additional surface detail is going to make me go back. Rant over.

i think thats a little harsh. the developers said it was to be a first person shooter, set in a strange place that acted like it was real, with some few rpg elements.

and what do you have? exactly that, once ypu've been through an area, it repopulates itself, people sneak up on you to try to stealth kill you, th essential functions of a city are all there, people coming and going, rummaging for food, even kiling eachother when they think its necesary. the story is excellent, and the atmosphere is really good. plasmid placement, and tonics give you that "little bit of rpg" by having to select and compromise what powers you keep and what you chuck.

i like it, i guess we are ying and yang then Wink

You've never played System Shock 2, have you. That's not a question, it's a statement of fact. Razz

Personally I wish they'd gone further with the RPG elements but then I guess everytime a game like this comes along I hope it'll be the next Deus Ex! Smile

I'm not sure what this DLC content is going to add to the game though. I've played the game through twice and I don't think a few plasmids are enough of a draw to make me play it through again. If they were releasing new levels then I'd be far more interested. Maybe it's just intended to boost sales before Xmas. Get more people who don't own the game to pitch in their Ł25 for it.

Cheers, J_C

This is good news for me because I've completed it by rescuing all the little sisters which meant less Adam and therefore less plasmids.

I was going to play back through it harvesting all the little sisters instead to see the "bad" ending, so with the extra plasmids and tonics I'll get more choice for my Adam! Cool
Mappman on 3 Dec '07
I'd maxed out all the plasmids that I wanted last pass through (being ever so nice). I think it's too soon for me to go back in and play the Dark Path, additional content or no.

Cool. A good reason to go back and play one of the best games of the year. Cool

It was overated. The final act of the game was horrid, losing any sense of dread that they created at the start. And the players transformation at the end was pointless merely obscuring your view a bit and making you a little stronger but then this mysteriously disappears during the boss fight (which felt incrediable out of place.) I couldn't work out whether it was more poor machine or the game itself, but combat felt very weak to, very consolised.

I agree with Jack_Crowe, it needed to be more RPG, and I'm not a fan of RPGs. Take the weapon upgrades, at first i was thinking I need to make a decision which weapon i'm going to use most to warrent the upgrade but by the end of the game I had all the upgrades anyway so it didn't really matter. The lack of inventory meant you never had to specialise your character so you just carried everything around, switching things around when you needed them.

But for all of these complaints, the game right up until the first ending (you'll know what I mean if you've played it) was still great. Fantastic setting and story, some great creepy moments early on and with the artist, and one of the best twist reveals I've seen in any game and better than most films. However, it wasn't one of the best games ever that it seems to be hailed as.

You'll find that if you go for saving all or killing all of the sisters the difference in your total amount of Adam is really pretty negligible as you go through.

It is frankly pretty poor and linear as a shooter

Where was I when this revelation came along that linear = poor? What exactly is wrong with a linear game? No-one said Half-Life or Max Payne or Doom were too "linear as a shooter". I really don't know where all of these negative opinions on linearity have come from. Especially in the case of Bioshock, where it being linear was actually a clever part of the story.
Acheron51 on 3 Dec '07
tassletine, your entitled to your own opinon so i wont go to hard on you, if you dont like Bioshock, & for reasons i cant imagine!?, you obviously dont?, why bother to come on here & talk utter s**t about it & make yourself look like a complete t**t!?... sorry i tried.

The combat was too consoleised....what the f**k is that supposed to mean?

I love it when PC fanboys blame problems they had with the game on it being developed for consoles. The combat would have been no different if it was developed solely for PC.

I think you will find a lot of System Shock 2 fans say that. While ive never played System Shock 2, anybody thats followed any gaming franchise, if things are changed too much or dumbed down or whatever, of course the fans will complain, its not PC fanboyism, its the fact that the prequels were only out on the PC

Meaning it feels as if it was designed to be played on a gamepad. As result of this aiming feels sluggish when using a mouse - but like I say this could have been my s**t computer. And yes a game designed solely for PC, or primarily for PC, would feel completely different. Just look at Halo for PC compared to HL2 - the movement with the mouse is completely wrong.

edit - Also things like the spawning chambers were probably an addition due to the console market, simplifying the game for a wider audience.
vandelay on 3 Dec '07
The spawn chambers were in System Shock 2 though, also sounds like this patch will add an achievement and a new difficulty setting where you can't use the chambers.
monkey_puncher on 3 Dec '07
new difficulty setting where you can't use the chambers.

Really? That IS interesting. The chambers made it too easy, imo.

Never played SS2 so didn't know this. Were they implemented in the same way, was everything identical, including health of enemies etc.? Made it far too easy and seemed to me to cater for the not used to quick saving consoles.

That's certainly what I heard.

Anyway, has anyone managed to play this game on DX10? when I try it there is no sound after the the plane crash cut scene. Although, on DX9 it's super.

This was on the demo mind.
