Microsoft has finally revealed details for the European Xbox Live Video Marketplace - and it's coming next week!
December 11 is the date us Europeans will be able to rent movies from Xbox Live Marketplace, which will include films such as Harry Potter, Training Day and The Matrix.
Films will cost 380 Microsoft Points (£3.23) for the lovely 720p versions and 250 (£2.13) for ugly SD ones. Once downloaded you've then got 14 days to start watching a film, but once you've started watching you're then on a 24 hour countdown until it's deleted.
It's basically an online rental service, like the US Video Marketplace that's been going for a few months.
The autumn dashboard update is also out today, which adds (among lots of other things) the equally exciting Xbox Originals as well as a fancy Parental Timer, so Gav's girlfriend can stop him playing Halo all night.
A brilliant Christmas for Xbox 360 owners then - and finally a reason to pick up that pricet 120GB hard drive. Hmmm, we wonder if the office one is still lying around...
The full list of UK films is as follows: 300 HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS ZODIAC MATRIX, THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, THE MATRIX RELOADED, THE OCEAN'S ELEVEN PERFECT STORM, THE SWORDFISH THREE KINGS TRAINING DAY FUGITIVE, THE RISKY BUSINESS SPACE COWBOYS EYES WIDE SHUT ANALYZE THIS DEMOLITION MAN ERASER EXECUTIVE DECISION LETHAL WEAPON 3 LETHAL WEAPON 4 LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION MARS ATTACKS! CLASH OF THE TITANS SUPERMAN III DEAD CALM
blockbuster is cheaper and i cant start watching them straight away and won't wait for them to download.
No it's not...
You try renting a recent film for just over £2 at Blockbuster, you're gonna be paying about £3.75 for a film like 300 or Zodiac.
God knows how much the HD movies in Blockbuster cost, I'm sure it won't be as cheap as this though. They're certainly a lot more pricey on Virgin's pay per view service.
good for getting hold of 720p movies but poor choice when you compare it to the US marketplace, warner bros only. Hopefully they will add more content soon.
superman III ... ok, so i download a film. start watching it. unplug my internet connection. how does microsoft delete it? do i need to be online to watch it?
Hmmm... Anything on the list that I like I already own. Except Mars Attacks, but I don't know if I like that yet. Yes, ramble ramble. I believe it's a cult classic, but then again so are Kevin Smith's films, which are crap, and so is Napoleon Dynamite, which is the single worst piece of film making ever perpetrated. Anchorman comes close, but it's unfortunately a commercial success and more than a cult film. Yes, again, ramble ramble.
There is a point to this post however, I wanted to ask people their impression of Mars Attacks. I might get it just to give the service a try, is it worth it?

personally thought mars attack was s**t...it was the first fil i ever watched on sky box offie.
This is just the start. In a few years time (depending on how the HD war goes) you could see movies being released on Live the same time as DVD or maybe even sooner, not counting tv shows and other media.
Well done MS, Im sure the back catalogue will improve with time and so may the price.
Crap selection of films (own the good ones on dvd). I'll stick to collecting Blu-ray films so that I can watch them whenever I want without having to download again. Thanks anyway Microsoft. Can't wait for Blade Runner on blu-ray!

I like Mars Attacks, but then again I utterly 100% disagree with everything else you mentioned, so I probably wouldn't bother if I were you!

I agree it's not the best selection of films but these are just the launch titles, it'll get better. HD-DVD Blade Runner is excellent and the picture quality still edges Blu-Ray.
I've been buying a load of HD-DVD's but to be honest, for the price, even on import, i'd need to be watching the films at least 4 times before it represents better value than this! I'm really pleasantly surprised at the cost, I was sure it would be about a fiver per film but this is cheaper than Blockbuster. I might even consider cancelling my LoveFilm subscription!
I buy my favourite films on Blu-ray. This way i get the best 1080p image, can watch them again whenever I want, and see the (often crappy) extras.
But this Xbox service is a 'rental' service, and has value. It is an alternative to Blockbuster video not Blu-ray/ DVD.
This means its great for watching those films that you wouldn't necessarily buy, but would quite like to see. Great for watching a film when there is nothing on. (it just will take 13 days or something to download.)
Personally I'd rather not spend half my free time downloading films when I could be kicking cheeks on COD4 or Warhawk. Or watching a film... Also, you can buy most of those films for £3.00 or less in the shops.

Hehe. Alright man, well thanks for the sort-of kinda recommendation-ish. Should probably just get the thing and decide for myself. I think the pricing is very fair, and it'll give me reason to turn my 360 on for the first time in almost... 4 months! I'm actually shocked to realize it's been that long, I played it daily from December 2nd 2005, then on March 23rd 2007 I started to play it a bit less, then I upgraded to an Elite just in time for Bioshock, played that a bit and haven't touched the system since due to PS3. Seems like I probably shouldn't have bothered with the Elite, since here we are finally seeing a use for all that extra space, and I'm almost totally disinterested.
which is the single worst piece of film making ever perpetrated. Anchorman comes close, but it's unfortunately a commercial success and more than a cult film.
Your a retard. Anchorman is one of... if not the best comedy film ever made. If you dont like it, I will fight you.
seems quite steep £ to me, not because its expensive in itself, but you can buy alot of them films for £3 on dvd anyway (does xbox upscale them to hd?), if not then I guess I see the point as you can download them at 720p
I rent HD films for 7.99 for 2 and I can keep them as long as I want, delivery to door service included
Its a good start but where are the more recent titles, with the exception of 300 theres nothing there to warrent a purchase, i mean come on surely everyones seen those films upteen times, wheres the NEW content, was looking forward to watching the latest titles such as Transformers etc.. oh well it can only get better! Thumbs up anyway M$
There's nothing on that list that I'd really bother with. Most of them I've already seen (either cinema or TV) and the others I'm not fussed.
If they get some new, decent titles I might think about it. It's not like it takes that long to download a movie anyway - it'd probably take me just about as long to walk to our nearest Blockbuster and check a copy out
And I still don't see the point in claiming old movies are HD just because you've doubled the pixels. Running a NES game in full-screen mode on my PC screen doesn't make it hi-def, it just means the generated pixels spread over the available ones
Your a retard. Anchorman is one of... if not the best comedy film ever made. If you dont like it, I will fight you.
Your pathetic.
Actually sir, you're the retard for three reasons. 1) It is only the retarded that are able to extract any sort of enjoyment from that 2-hour string of donkey turd. 2) It's retarded to call someone pathetic because they don't like the same awful movie that you do. 3) It's retarded to even suggest that Anchorman is the best comedy ever made while the following films exist: Hot Shots & Part Deux, Airplane 1&2, Ace Ventura 1&2, Kung Pow, Dumb & Dumber, Trading Places, all Monty Python films, The Blues Brothers, BASEketball, the Wayne's World series, The Big Lebowski, the Austin Powers Series, and Daddy Day Care. Ok, the last one is a joke but Anchorman can't hold a candle to the rest. It can't even work as a starving slave in the candle factory that makes the candles that are held to those films.
Nobody with an IQ above room temperature would laugh at any aspect of Anchorman unless they were heavily intoxicated, and even then it's a stretch. I was absolutely baked when I first saw Anchorman, and STILL didn't laugh. Will Ferrell is crap, he's about as funny as Ricky Gervais (hint: not). Anchorman is massively overrated, doesn't even count as comedy, and the highly, highly overused phrase "I love lamp" wasn't even funny the first time, never mind the millions of times that I've seen or heard it quoted by idiots since then.
Once you start watching any Will Ferrell "comedies": Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory... you are truly scraping the bottom of the barrel.
What a s**tty list of films. Hope they get better. It's gonna take about two effin' days to download a film at 720p with Live's s**tty speeds. It'll be quicker to walk to the rental shop.
And I still don't see the point in claiming old movies are HD just because you've doubled the pixels. Running a NES game in full-screen mode on my PC screen doesn't make it hi-def, it just means the generated pixels spread over the available ones
Well you need to do a little research then my son....even oldies like Sparticus are now in HD, this is because 32mm or whatever size film it was filmed on has a higher resolution than SD TV and DVD resolutions, though of course not as high as dedicated HD cameras, its still a vast improvement...

I agree, but I actually laughed at his cameo as the sewing obsessed prisoner in the Starsky and Hutch movie. (Apart from that cameo though, the movie was utter cack.)
I beg to differ with the Wil Farrel Bashrs. I will admit ancorman ist the most fantastic film ever but it wasnt as bad as you make out. Bt he has starred in some great films.
ELF for example, even tho its a kids film is still a great film. He is also excllent in The Producers.
So you get 14 days to start watching the video, and 24 hours before it gets erased when you do. So, during that 24 hours how many times can you watch it?
Superman3? Could be worse, could be Superman4
And apart from the Potter movies, no Brit films, why?
Yes that's right everyone, because these are the only films that'll ever be on here and such an innovative and ground-breaking service should definitely be looked upon with cynicism and negativity.
For crying out loud, is there no pleasing some people? It's cheaper than pay-per-view and Blockbuster, there's a HD option without having to pay for a set-top box or HD-DVD player, and there's no other service like it on any other format.
It might be early days, but I think this is an enormous step forward. It wasn't so long ago that it took over 5 minutes to download a short lo-res video clip, so please bear that in mind when you look at the pricing and standard. 720p may not be full HD but it's pretty bloody amazing when you think about it.
Cool, I didn't think this was going to happen this side of Xmas. If I've got enough HDD space I'll be renting Zodiac and possibly 300 just to get the most of my TV's HD goodness
Ripberger, love the name mate. You know I've never liked you Rip, but you've got killer instincts and buisiness know-how that I respect. But this latest idea of yours, riding up to our shareholders meeting with a gang of bikers? You've never even been on a bike! Ah, the memories. (and I only know this speech because I played Full Throttle recently, I don't have it memorized from the mid-90s or anything )
Anyway what I was actually going to say, partly in response to your comment Mappman, is that I am happy the service has finally reached us, but I can't see myself using it a lot. I was really excited for the video marketplace at first, because other than the odd trailer from Xbox Live I had no way of seeing HD movies on my HDTV. In the time since the US got the Video Marketplace however, I have bought the HD DVD add-on for 360, and now also own a PS3, so the value of it has severely diminished for me. On top of that I've also upgraded my old 720p-only 50" TV to a 1080p 55" set and have become a bit of a snob with regards to content being "only" 720p. I'm interested in seeing Zodiac and I mentioned that I'd never seen Mars Attacks and might give it a rent, but in the vast majority of cases I'll buy a film I want to see. I'm into the whole collection angle so I prefer to do it that way, but for things like Mars Attacks where it can't be bought on a HD disc format, I'm happy to still be able to see the film in HD without spending too much.
I have to say, on the one hand I'm excited; for rental prices on a HD film, thats really not bad at all. They may just have got the right balance. I'll see how I feel when I try it out.
Which might not be for a while as that is a pretty stinky list of films to be getting on with - LOL
Perhaps curiosity will get the better of me... then again, 300 is near enough gay porn, so I might get bored and lonely one night...
It'll be interesting to see how often it gets updated and how quickly new films make it to the list.
Also, how much of a difference HDMI upscaling compares to true 720p.
Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised and definately interested.
Zodiac eh? I want the 2 hours back I spent in a cold cinema on this tripe.
I usually like that sort of film but it was boring as hell. Fincher sticks close to the facts on the infamous killer but for the rest of us who aren't in the know about US reprobates then it's a first class snore fest.
Apart from that, the service looks good, although I'm extremely loathe to spend 120 quid on a new hd, especially when you can buy 500+ on a pc for 80 notes. Reduce the hd to 50 quid and then we'll talk about rentals.
And another thing, 10 pounds for originals are way too much. 5 pounds are acceptable. Especially as I bought Fable LC for a tenner a year ago, with a box and instructions.
superman III ... ok, so i download a film. start watching it. unplug my internet connection. how does microsoft delete it? do i need to be online to watch it?
It's DRM. It doesn't need an internet connection to be deleted. It's all within the file.
As soon as you've downloaded it there'll be a countdown of the 14 days. And as soon as you start watching it it'll skip down to 24 hours.

Mark are you Sony Defence Force member??? What you post in this forums,no longer can be caled opinion.Bashing a system(360) that you most likley never tried to enjoy is caled "fanboy obsesion your case (PS3)".
Not that bad a selection of films. I just hope MS keep the selection of films updated on a regular basis and that the download speeds aren't too slow.
I don't want to commit to a next-gen disc format yet so this is the ideal method to give me my HD fix. Particulary looking forward to watching The Matrix trilogy and 300 in 720p.

i agree,Anchorman is great....i love lamp,etc etc
as for the list...not mega great, but a good start i guess....superman 3...well,it could of been worse,it could of been superman 4

Ok sorry to keep posting but Fallout, i think you missed the point, he was quoting from the film (unless i was mistaken)
Also Anchorman is much better than most of the films you listed, kung pow being one of the worst films i've ever had to endure. I guess its all down to a matter of personal preference, just like you playing your PS3 for the last 4 months instead of 360, what the hell have you been playing that has been better than the 360 line up?
Pathetic, i'm going to punch you, i'm going to punch you right in the eye.
Can't wait for Blade Runner on HD-DVD with exactly the same content!
er,yeah...bladerunner was released yesterday on both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray...and yes, they do contain the same stuff
but,the 5 disc DVD version has more stuff than them(like 3 versions of the film for a start)...and only for a few quid more then the HD/BR versions....C'MON DVD!!!!!
but,the 5 disc DVD version has more stuff than them(like 3 versions of the film for a start)...and only for a few quid more then the HD/BR versions....C'MON DVD!!!!!
If I wanted the other versions, I would've bought them already. Seen them TOO many times.
Besides, I put off buying DVDs for about 2 years because I was waiting for a new format (only to get exTREMEly 'miffed' when the opposing sides didn't sort out their differences and just make one disk format). And I refuse to go back to buying low res DVDs.
The only exceptions are films that just won't get released in HD. Like 'Short Circuit' and it's sequel. CLASSICS! : D

Those who are worried about crap content should go look at the USA market place on xbox.com, it has loads of films and tv shows now. Not all of them are good but a good majority are.
Ok sorry to keep posting but Fallout, i think you missed the point, he was quoting from the film (unless i was mistaken)

Ah, it was a quote. I didn't pick up on that or I would have been a bit less annoyed by the post. Please leave my eye alone, the doctor says I'm not supposed to get fists in it.
With regard to playing the PS3 more than the 360, all the awesome 3rd-party games are on both consoles so that was a huge part of it, and also I was not interested in any 360 exclusives. I hate Halo 3 (made the mistake of giving in to the hype, played two levels and brought it back)and I wasn't bothered with PGR 4 or Mass Effect (though I will eventually give the latter a go).
