Sony expects to have an update for PS3 later this month that will add support for the next generation of Blu-ray playback features.
'Profile 1.1' is the newfangled name given to a new standard of Blu-ray playback which allows for a range of new features. These include picture-in-picture playback (so you could have a director talking in one window with the film running in another), support for downloadable content and much more.
Sony's latest (and more expensive) Blu-ray players already support Profile 1.1 features, and according to a Sony rep, speaking at recent press conference, the PS3 is likely to receive a firmware update that will add Profile 1.1 support later this month, reports The Digital Bits.
So there's STILL no reason to buy a dedicated Blu-ray player over PS3.
I know there are always arguments about the fact the ps3 is a gaming machine etc, but i for one love it, and I think its great that we are now seeing some great games, and more to come. The fact that we have a built in blu-ray is great, but the bonus fact is the above, the fact we can keep upgrading its profile, which is such a bonus and major future proofing. Goob Job Sony
this is great! it means that all us lucky ps3 owners can always have the latest software for our blue ray player. something a stand alone system could not offer.
With the firmware being upgradeable there will most likley never be a reason to switch to a stand-alone blu-ray.
To be honest though i was in Zavvi (previously virgin) and they had HD-DVD and blu-ray running on two tv's side by side and i have to admit the HD looked better to me but it may have a been a crap blu-ray set-up as the pic was way too fuzzy. But in the HD movie section it was all blu-ray with a tiny section for HD!
This is only due to the sales of the PS3 dominating everything else in that market, plus HD could also do with a better advertised support, transformers is the only one i've seen on tv that says you can buy it on HD-DVD!

I agree and I can't wait to watch some great films this xmas in lovely 1080p. The fact that the blu-ray player is built into the console is fantastic as I love my films just as much as I love gaming. Maybe that is why I find it so hard to slag off sony like a lot of people these days. Oh, and through 7.1 = bliss.
I just want the DivX feature, where is it Sony, 360 users got it on Monday
Here here! Sony announced it first but Xbox got it first, whats with that?! Get it done lads!
Actually, they were announced on the same day. And the PS3 is the only-online enabled Blu-Ray player I believe. That alone already makes it the best choice.

They were asking about Divx.... I'm confused as to where your comment came from
Sony have been horrendous in the past with all their lies, making the PS3 ridiculously overpriced in Europe while stripping it down, no decent games etc etc, but to be fair to them this a great bonus. They didn't have to do this upgrade especially as they have dedicated bluray players which they wanna sell, or they could of even released an upgraded PS3 (to much annoyance of current PS3 owners but thats never bothered them in the past). Well done Sony now all we need are some decent games.
"ridiculously overpriced" is a personal view, if you after a games console to just play games nothing else then it was overpriced.
On the other hand if you want a games console with a built in bluray player, DVD upscaling and SACD support that looks great and has excellent build quality, that would compliment any home theatre setup, then it is the bargain of the centry.

SACD is still around?
Well CD's have been around since 1982, so what so surprising about SACD when its only 8 years old.
It's a tricky situation for Sony. They can't really drop the price for PS3 any lower otherwise it will destroy the chance of anyone buying a standalone player. The answer so far has been to hold back features on the PS3's playback but with this update we are just another step closer to standalone quality playback.

So how will that make the owner of a £1,000 stand alone Blu-ray player feel?

Like a mug, probably! Serve them right if they have more money than sense, to do a bit of research first.
