Nintendo: No Smash Bros planned before July '08

Smash Bros. Brawl release slips again. It's wrist-slitting time
It's good news that Mario Kart Wii is still on track, but where the hell is Super Smash Bros. Brawl. on Nintendo's early 2008 release schedule, which turned up this morning?

Nowhere, that's where. And Nintendo UK has confirmed to CVG that this is because it's currently not planned to come out in the first half of next year, despite previous release fixtures.

In Nintendo's words: "[Super Smash Bros. Brawl] is currently not planned for a release in Q1 or Q2 next year."

It was expected out before Christmas. Then it was shortly after Christmas. Now it appears we're not likely to get our Brawl on before July. Damn it!

Nintendo has not offered any reasoning whatsoever for the delay. So you'll just have to wait.

Is it just Europe? If so, very glad i got the US Wii, this is a disgrace!

Is it just Europe?

That's what I want to know. If so then it's just a joke.
I WAS considering buying a Wii early next year but if this is how Nintendo treat us then I think I'll stick to 360 and PS3... Confused

God dammit I'm really annoyed at that.

I'm 100% certain that Smash Bros has not been delayed. The spokesperson that answered CVG just doesn't know when the game is expected.
NGM Cube on 6 Dec '07
If it is delayed, then this is absurd! I mean, I do have a lot of games to play in the meantime but Nintendo (UK/Europe) don't seem to be doing us any favours!
JuiKuen on 6 Dec '07
If it's true, then it better be the best game ever!!!
Biggwedge on 6 Dec '07
You absolute f**king w****rs! How long do I have to frigging wait. I have heard release dates ranging from Launch to March 07 and now this complete p**stake. Complete joke of a f**king company. Oh dear.
RumbleThunder on 6 Dec '07
I'll tell you why it's pushed back to July, because they need to drip feed the few games with any substance out over the next 24 months. Am I being cynical? You watch.

Without the constraint of their profits being tied to software as it is with MS and Sony, Nintendo have little incentive to rush games to market, nor do they have any real interest in creating new IP that will appeal specifically to the traditional gaming market.

In short, this means that you can probably predict with some accuracy Nintendo's Triple A release schedule for the next 18-24 months. Just pluck out all the classic franchises and I reckon you'll be right give or take six months.

One thing's for certain, by the end of Wii's life, anyone who's interested will almost certainly have all the games they expected, and maybe just a few they hoped for (PILOT WINGS!!!).
Mappman on 6 Dec '07
Not in by end of Q2 2008... who else thinks because they missed this Christmas they may well hold back until Holiday season '08?

The amount of screenshots and gameplay videos that have been available since months and months ago suggest it certainly isn't due to it being not near completion
buzzmaverick on 6 Dec '07
The official site doesnt actually say what territories get it on feb 10th it just says launches feb 10th, although im guessing that only applies to americaland. Honestly if we have to wait for more than a month longer than the US i'm importing an american wii, who cares if I'll have 2 Wiis, its just so gash having to wait longer than that.
RLRL_ on 6 Dec '07
I wouldn't mind another delay if it was to make the game even better than it already is. But the Japanese get to play it early next year, so the delay is completely pointless. I hate you Nintendo.
Dinalfos on 6 Dec '07
is anyone actually surprised by this? I've been a nintendo fan for a long time and it's become a trademark of NOE to f**k us over. Ive said countless times that nintendos main headquarters must think europe consist of a man, a woman and a goat because they genuinely dont give two f**ks about us. the USA is their second best buyer (over japan obviously) so they will take good care of them, however with europe they just release games when they can be bottomd.

a prime example would be when the gamecube was released. companies promised extras for their euro gamers to make up for the extra wait. when luigi's mansion was released, a whole new mansion was promised as a euro exclusive.

all we got was the same damn mansion, cept backwards.

when resident evil was released, a laser cannon was promised as a euro exclusive due to the wait.

it was then cut, we got a patched version which even fixed the cloning chest cheat.

nintendo just have a tendancy of dealing with europe dead last. all this ranting and raving about how nintendo is the best games company is complete b******s when you consider how s**te they treat their customers. at least microsoft and sony try. microsoft try their best to have games released globally within a week of their US release (or more recently, 4 days later). nintendo cant even manage 4 weeks!

regardless of the fact I own a wii, I hate nintendo with a passion.
J_2000 on 6 Dec '07
Awwww, come on. What the hell Nintendo? I bet this is for the Europe release because they've already said in Smash Bros Dojo that the US release is in December. Though I may be wrong. Either way, i don't care if it is to make the game better. It's good enough now give me my game Evil or Very Mad

So while PS3/X360 owners are playing GTA IV..........Wii Owners are playing Link's Crossbow Training.

Nice one Nintendo Rolling Eyes

while they're playing gta4 we'll be playing battalion wars, mario kart, no more heroes, soul calibur and many others. at least the summer holidays will be an offical smash bros holiday across europe
P_3te-r on 7 Dec '07
Oh boo friggin' hoo. Look at all you cry-babies. Can't wait an extra 6 months. Do you want your toys NOW NOW NOW? Grow the bloody hell up and wait. Impatient spoilt brats.

Have you seen how many amazing features there are in this game? Would you like it to be a complete mess? No. So wait for Nintendo to get it spot on like they always do and you'll be happy.

Heck, Super Mario Galaxy was originally touted as "close to launch" title. Nearly a year later and it arrived and look how bloody practically perfect it is.

Why is everyone moaning about this "its crap being in europe" stuff? You dont even know when the US is getting it ffs, let alone is ahead of us

The bitching is even more annoying when recently there have actually been games we have had ahead of the states, so calm down. I really doubt its been postponed that long as well, its just a case of no definite release date. Look at how many games have snuck out early recently.

The talk about drip feeding titles is a joke as well, probably from a non-Nintendo fan. Cause otherwise he would know that we received Super Paper Mario, Metroid 3 and Mario Galaxy within 3 months of each other. Thats hardly a drip and more of a steady downpour.

I do get where you're coming from here, but I'm a die hard Nintendo fan and I'll still admit we do get the short straw. SPM, for example, was released in the US five months before it came out in the UK. Diamond and Pearl were 3 months late in the UK compared to the US release. Indeed, we have had some early releases, but they tend to be fairly close to the US dates.

We've had a really good October/November it is true, but the main point is that on the official Smash Bros site the US release date is still touted for Feb 10th, a date which has been confirmed several times. If the slippage is hitting all versions I'd expect we'll hear in the next day or so, but I still suspect the game is on track stateside, which leaves us with a minimum of a five month gap between the currently scheduled US release and the new projected Europe release ("Er...Julyish"Wink. If this turns out to be the case as well, then it's a stupid delay. If the US version is complete and out by Febuary, then really all they can change for a European release is add multiple language support, which does not take a whole 5 months to do.

Admittedly, yes, it could simply be a case that Nintendo haven't actually finalised the European release date, and as such the UK headquaters assumed that if it's not on the list it's not due until the second half of the year. Still, hopefully we'll get some sort of confirmation either way now this story's doing the rounds.

I completely agree with nick_gc. I'd much rather wait a few more months so Nintendo can make it to the best of their ability, rather than get a sub-standard game just so it can get to the shops earlier.

Plus, there's always Mario Kart to keep us going!

It's out in Japan next month, and the US in Feb. no way are the developers still working on it.

edit: I hope this doesn't happen to us Australians but knowing sod's law...
