Back to WWII for Call of Duty 5?

Job opening sparks speculation...
Speculation that Call of Duty will return to WWII in CoD 5 is circulating the internet off the back of a job advertisement.

Treyarch, which is behind a number of games in the first-person shooter series, is advertising for a Call of Duty level designer, and this particular part of the job description has leapt off the web page:

"Working experience with First-Person Shooter or Third-Person Shooter genres (console or PC). And if you're a fan of World War II shooters, then even better!"

So is Call of Duty returning to WWII after its stellar move to modern day in CoD 4 (review)? And does this also mean Treyarch will develop the fifth game in the series? We'll simply have to wait and see...

Activision made brief mention of Call of Duty 5 earlier this month.

We asked Infinity Ward president Grant Collier whether the WWII shooter has been done to death when caught up with him prior to the release of CoD 4.

"I think there's always room for the top games in any genre. If someone came in right now and decided to really blow the doors off World War II, I think the community would embrace them. Lots of people murmur about, 'Oh, I've played too many World War II games', but every Call of Duty game sells more than the last one", he replied.

Noooooooooooo! Sad
Fingers crossed they are just after someone who liked their previous games & arent setting it in WW2 ever again

Not too surprising,a nd no doubt it'll be console only like CoD3 was.
funkyjack on 10 Dec '07
Forget WWII shooters, FPS games are just overdone in general now.

More platformers, beat-em ups, racers and point and click games please Razz

I was a massive fan of the WWII scene in the previous games and was concerned about the change in COD 4 but even I admit it would be a shame to switch back to soon, especially after call of duty 4 was such a fantastic game with a compelling story.

Also, could this not just be a PSP game rather than a console game, i havent seen anything to suggest it would be a console version.

I'd hate it to go back to WWII, it's been done to death and CoD4 has been the best ever, plus i'd like to see how the story might even follow on from how the last one ended!

I agree, there is always room for top games in any genre. There is no such thing as 'too many fps games' as it just gives shooter fans more choice, the only complaint is that there is simply not enough other games and making less fps games will not increase the number of games in other genres.

I absolutely love CoD4. I simply wouldn't have bothered if it had been WW2 based, because we already have a dozen franchises running WW2 stuff.

The modern day setting has far more interest to me.

This is the time for everyone to get to www.charlieoscardelta.com and complete the new survey up there. The final question asks what single piece of advice you'd give the developers.
I told them the move away from WW2 was a good idea. Please, everyone go and do the same!

Yes, back to WW2 era. And emphasize on the single player. Call of Duty 4 was such a crap...
mpokolis on 10 Dec '07
I imagine Treyarch will be making Call of Duty 5, as Treyarch and Infinity Ward take it in turns... 2 year cycle for each company. So I expect CoD5 will be set during WWII. As for what IW will do with CoD6, I have no idea.

I doubt I'd buy CoD5 if it has a WWII setting. As I just can't be bottomd with WWII weapons anymore.

Are you mad man??? I know it's personal opinion and all but whhhhaaaattt? The SP is spectacular (although most love the ghillie level, my stand out is the C130 Spectre level mwhahahahaha) and i'm loving the MP element as well.

Although I also love anything WWII, I agree it has been a tad overdone. Leave it at least a couple of years, then come back to it.

yeah back to ww2, for me there just seems to be more emotion wrapped up in ww2 rather than the modern setting.germans and british, great. yanks and arabs,-not quite the same.besides all the weapons seem very similar over both time zones.the battlefield crawling with germans just works better and as ive said before its only poor ww2 games that have been done to death.
ingy on 10 Dec '07
Cod4 was great, I would rather it stayed away from ww2 for a while.
MIPhantom on 10 Dec '07
Infinity Ward have found the perfect Formula for a War based genre. A compelling story in World War 2 would be awesome, with those special effects and depth that only COD developers know how to do.

So I believe that making the right choices (taking a deep dive into Band of Brothers story is a great example), I believe COD5 will be the best Single Player WW2 shooter around.

I do fear the lack of Multiplayer options though.
WW2 shooters will never have the depth of Modern Combat in Multiplayer.

Which of the two devlopers is the one behind COD2 and COD4, Infinity Ward? They are considered the better games that Treyarch's COD3 right?

Which means COD5 will probably not be that good. I don't like this switching developers thing.
keyser7 on 10 Dec '07
Well it's nice to know that the recent merger has freed up the franchise to go in bold, new directions...oh wait.

What a regressive move. Rolling Eyes

Was pretty much expecting this. The idea seems to be they want a COD game out at the end of every year. To do so they have Treyarch do a game one year and Infinity Ward the next.
Obviously Infity Ward's offerings are alot better and will mix things up while Treyarch will just re-use the engine from the previous game and not take any risks.
It's just a sign of Activison trying to become the new EA... Confused
vulcanraven01 on 10 Dec '07
Ergh, I wont buy the next one then.

I've only got 2 WWII games (CoD 3 and CoH OF) but really have no inclination to buy others. There's just too many, and the war itself doesn't interest me that much.

As I said in my General Forum topic, make it Vietnam!
gothchild on 10 Dec '07
I hope they do an expansion for COD4, it was so short it really needs one,and then COD5 is WWII again. I hope Rolling Eyes
Terencehines on 10 Dec '07
To be honest i would not mind. CoD3 sucked but with Medal of Honor going so far off the plot they'd still have no competition and with CoD4 so good they can learn from that and make CoD5 absolutely amazing. I'd love another modern one but i would not mind WWII as long as it was more like CoD4 offline and online, except for the weapons.

Though CoD6 must go modern again, i would hate the series to break out from the pack only to fal straight back in.

Well if it would be a PSP game, they would call it call of duty: fronlines or call of duty: brothers or heros but they wouldn't count it as a sequel because it would suck on PSP
