Sony's PS3 might be struggling to out-punch rivals Wii and Xbox 360 on shop shelves currently, but the next four years will see it biting Wii's heels.
A Screen Digest analysis of console trends has the ridiculously popular Wii out top by 2011 with around 75 million units worldwide, but it puts PS3 in a very, very close second place.
Xbox 360 by the same year, meanwhile, will have a 40 million worldwide unit penetration, leaving it looking longingly at rivals.
Surely thats just total speculation though, i mean how the hell would they know that, and unless the ps3 gathers a few more killer apps there is no way they will be that close to nintendo!!
I predict that I'll be well over eight feet tall by 2043. Now I want you all to make a note of that and call me on it if it's not true....don't forget I said it! If you forget I said it I'll realise I can spout any old crap so long as I attach a long enough timeline to the end.
I predict EVERY home will have a PS3 by 2023...NOW DON'T FORGET I SAID THAT.
So were these anal-ist... ermm, sorry *cough* analysts from the western world or from Japan? If they're from Japan then it's quite possibly just proud Japanese guys bigging-up their fellow countymen (or in this case consoles)
but the gamecube had a lifespan of roughly 5 years before the wii came along... add 5 years from the wii launch in 2006, thats 2011. the next Nintendo system will be launched, making the ps3 obsolete. the damage to Sony will already have been done, and by that point in time, we'll see what the blu ray vs hd-dvd war result is. if blu-ray dominates and the world has accepted it, maybe they'll buy a ps3, as by then the price should have dropped to 150-200.
If sony cant get their market share up by christmas of next year, the library for the system is going to end up horrible.
Yet more pointless crap. By 2011 both MS and Nintendo will have new consoles out. the 360 is already 1/3 of the way through it's expected 5 year life, so by 2011 it'll be due replacement.
The Wii on the other hand remains a mystery. Up until recently it's been surviving on pure gimmick alone. Now that it's getting some decent games, anything is possible. I'm still not convinced it'll last that long, but you never know.
another day, another analysts forcast, and yet more complaining fanboys come out the woodworks to refute it. just enjoy your games people, thats what you were born and bred to do.
Sorry to disprove your above featured comment, but the graph clearly says 'Year-End Figures', so it says PS3 will overtake Xbox 360 by the YEAR ENDING 2008. ?
Got to love these analysts. They actually get paid for this? A regular gamer could make a more accurate prediction... Let's face it, console's have a life span of 5 years on average. 360 is already 2 years into it's life span meaning we have another 3 years before the next-gen starts. In another 3 years, I think it'll look something like this; #1 - Xbox 360 #2 - Nintendo Wii #3 - PS3
360 will just about come out on top due to the huge userbase, graphical quality compared to Wii, online service, low price point and great selection of games. Wii will only just miss out due to the graphics looking dated compared to the other systems and the lack of Mario and Zelda games since they have been used already. The casual games will be a huge success for Nintendo and will give them the boost they need to make this gen a highlight for them. PS3 will finish a slight way behind Wii. This is down to the fact the console is so similar to 360 meaning people will prefer that over PS3. However, if Blu-Ray destroys HD-DVD and win's the war then I could see PS3 really challenging Wii for 2nd spot.
as a Wii owner and die hard Nintendo fan, it pains me to say this but I think PS3 will outsell Wii sooner. That's judging by the crap devs are pushing out for the wii. Not only crappy minigame compilations, but they're all the same minigames!!
whereas Sony have a lot of exciting titles coming out soon, which is why I'm getting one this Xmas
Well from my consumer experience, this is a load of crap.
I know of 5 friends who have bought consoles in the past month. . . all of them are 360s. . . I might be living in an unusual Twilight Zone but it does seem to me that more people are buying 360s over PS3.
Sony will win europe, MS will win north america (the biggest gaming market in the world), nintendo will win japan.
MS will sell about 50 million units, roughly split between 44 million in the states and canada, 4 million in the uk and the rest between europe, japan, and the rest of the world.
Sony will sell about 20 million units in the states and canada, 15 million in japan and 15 million across europe and the rest of the world.
Nintendo will sell about 35 million Wii's in japan (after all its still to come out in pink and blue) and have a lite version released), 25 million in north america (its going to start to fade away next year, after all play one mini game, played them all), europe will make up the rest of the 10 million.
By 2011, the Wii will have sold more, but wont have won the next gen console war, that will be classed as a draw between PS3 and 360 around the world.
The xbox 720 or xbox 3, or heck even Xbox 1080 HD will be annouced may 2010 or 2011 for release the following xmas that year (MS will still not make them right and instead of a Red ring of death, it will be a fatel exception error rosing blue screen, quickly followed by a bios reboot and then a burning smell coming from the sexy but useless casing and the house sized powerpack), the machine will have a blue-ray/hd-dvd drive, come with 500 gb hdd and be powered by super dooper CPUGPU one chip solution with the uber ram built on the chip all 8gb of it, it will be multicore (32 cores, each doing 20 threads each)
The PS4 will be out 2 years after the xbox machine, it will have blue-ray 2.0 drive, it will rumble and have motion console sensing built into the machine and not the joypads, along side a hd camera, which will study the players for emotion when playing games and will react when the player is useless by making fun of them, by going backwards past them in GT5 (its a launch game by the way, still dosnt have online play either), it specs will be like the xbox machine, but will have a fancy name and title, making it sound better than anything else gone before it.
it will come out in different configs, not do very well, be scrapped and then get relunched as a stripped down machine, also it will cost adjusted to inflation a reasonble thousand in any currency, it will have a hd projecter built in, so you dont need a tv screen to play it on.
Nintendo new machine will be called (insert any children funny thing here) Poo and will not be as powerfull as PS3 or 360 is right now, but will have a brain sensor controller, you dont even have to wave your arms about now, it thinks for you, and yes it still has thousands apon thousands of sub standard mine game collections for it.
Thats my predictions, now im off to get a job in that industry, who would have thought, the ability to talk crap about something we dont know that well could lead to a well paid job, making it up as i go along, according to who i like that day.

I seem to remember analysts a year or so ago saying that the PS3 would just win the console war, followed closely by the xbox and with wii in distant 3rd place. Just goes to show, they can predict till they are blue in the face but essentially it means f*ck all.
You know what I hate is people who diss the Wii's success as a gimmick console when it has some stellar games & I will admit it has real s**t ones to but then again every console has had its fair share of s**t games including sony's previous efforts.
These anylists are full of crap nobody really knows what the state of play will be by then until we get a lot closer to that time no one person can predict what millions of others are going to spend their cash on.
I can see the Wii winning the current console war its selling in huge numbers with no signs of slowing down I went to my local high street today & not one store had a Wii in stock there was plenty of 360's & PS3's the only other games system selling close to the Wii in my area is the DS so I think if that is the trend going on in a lot of other places Nintendo will be having a very merry xmas.
And as others have pointed out by the time we get to 2011 there will most likely be an eager cue of gamers waiting for the next Xbox & next Nintendo systems & Pc's now are out stripping the PS3 so god knows what the standard will be come 2011.
WAY TOO DETAILED an attempted analysis "'Hun1"...other posts are spot-on!
The expected life-cycle of the 360 will be until it get's shafted by the competetion on a global scale, and i think everyone in the know is more than aware that the PS3 is a great Entertainment System aka Home Media Hub, but VERY much a flawed gaming console for the devs.
With the open-chequebook philosophy of MS, if the 360 is usurped by Sony in the coming years, i think we all know that the next XB2048 is around the corner!

Above is my own prediction as you can see anybody is capable of a prediction if it becomes the truth then you have something to brag about, but in all likely hood it will most likely be a pretty close race this Gen with no clear winner by any significant margin.
I will give my serious prediction and say that at least this Gen is shaping up to be more interesting than the last.
The Wii may well sell the most consoles this generation.
The important question devs and publishers will ask themselves is, which system will my game sell the most on? And yes, the Wii may have a corner in more homes than any other but will multi platform games sell more than on Wii than on MS or Sony?
i think there full of s%%t as long as microsoft keeps lowering the price of the system which they should do right now and keep coming out with great games i don't see that happening

Sony aren't going to catch MS any time soon unless they start selling well in excess of what MS sells each month, which they haven't been. I'd suggest that if Sony hasn't caught up by Christmas '08, they're not going to catch up at all.
Also, it's pretty obvious what MS will end up doing in a few years - new Xbox "720" or whatever. I'd expect that they'd stay with the current architecture and just bump up the specs significantly. 100% backwards compatibility in hardware with the current 360 lineup, allowing studios to continue to make 360 games if they don't wish to move forwards.
well acording to this graph the wii past 360 in 2006 on launch so its a load of crap
According to the graph the PS3 will overtake the 360 before (yes before) 2008.
At the bottom of the graph it says "*Year-end figures", so the Wii passed the 360 at the END of 2007 and they expect the PS3 to pass the 360 at the END of 2008.
the way i see it. More people i know recently is buying a xbox 360 rather that the ps3. Even if the wii doesn't win this next gen war it will come close. nintendo have made and will make so much money out of the ds and wii they will use all that money for their next wii i think it will be called the wiivolution which will be more powerful that the ps4 or xbox 720 as they will put most of that money into creating hd and other stuff as they already have successfully done motion sensing They have caught up so much ground from what the gamecube had done! what do ya think
...and... apple may come into the console war spicing things up and pc may get bigger
And lets not forget Sega with the Dreamcast 2 Launching with the first ever decent 3d sonic and a proper version of NiGHTs, along with Samba de Amigo, REZ 2, and Shenmue 3.
lol, thats just funny, its gonna catch the Wii when it will effectively be nearing its end of life, it'll be like the PS2 and the games that are coming out for it at the moment
When are we going to stop calling this generation of consoles "next gen"?
Some people have stated that the Wii's popularity will begin to stall, as the graphics look more dated compared to the other two. I don't think this will hold true, just look at the DS vs PSP situation (haven't seen it brought up in at least a few hours). I'd guess/analyse that the Wii is going to sell similarly to the PS2, if not more. Also, I think the "Wii is only for minigames" stance is getting a bit old now. I was a little indifferent about getting Mario Galaxy, but the wife picked me up a copy and 5 minutes in, I was feeling that old fun feeling that I hadn't even noticed was so rare these days.
I want sonys PS3 to be number 1 so PS4 is even more powerful and has even more technology packed into. If the PS3 fails then sony may try the cheaper option like nintendo which im not a fan of.
The Xbox 360 will suceed no matter what.
Next time i actually want to see a powerful next gen machine from Nintendo.
Not just the same one dressed up in nice plastic...

So what you're saying is that all you care about is having a powerful machine?
I don't know who's gonna be the market leader in 2011, hell, nobody does, but I tell you, I'll be AMAZED if 75 million Wiis (or any other console) is sold by then...
And count this as a vote for a Dreamcast 2 and Shenmue 3... Man, how I wish.
Note: I am a Wii owner who is intending to get an Xbox360 soon too. A LOT of my mates have got, or are getting 360s too. I know 2 people with PS3s. I predict that this forecasting is utter s**t - probably brought on by a sushi induced nightmare.
Some of you guys are fools. Sure this is a little weird, i do not think it will reach 75 million units because the Wii is a gimmick, it needs better and far more games that don't reguire me shaking the controller back and forth to ocmplete endless mini games.
Secondly to whoever thinks the 360 will come out on top: .i) The 360 in its first year, only sold the same amount as the PS3 in its first year. And that was with no competition that lived up to the "next gen". Secondly, the PS2 sold 110 million units, so assuming those who brought the PS3 brought the PS2 in the past that is over 100 million people to go witout the PS3. So, the 360 sold 12 million, and the Wii around 13. The PS3 sold 6 million by late July, i do not know the recent figures. That leaves a substantial amount of people with no next gen console. Not all people will jump ship to 360 because it is cheaper. The PS3, like the 360 has some great games, and the PS3 will ocme down in price. Then there is Home and LittleBigPlanet for the PS3 which has had a lot of hype. The Wii will sell well because it is for everyone, though i think many hardcore gamers will not just own a Wii but also a 360/PS3. .ii) The Wii, in its first year, has already sold more than the 360.
No, i do not think that the PS3 will come out like the PS2, i am more realistic. But the Wii will not sell constantly for ages, and the 360 has been out a while. Altohugh this will generate game sales from its library the PS3 is new, people will wait for a console, and it is dropping in price. Blu Ray will add to these sales. Also, over 110 million PS2's were sold so the console war will not be decided at a time when no console has even got 15 million sales, yet alone 30 million.
This generation will go down to the last few years, whether Microsoft decides to release another console early, full of problems or not. A new Xbox would not be that much ahead of the PS3 anyway, no company is naiive enough to release a product (the PS3) knowing such a machine could be taken to the next level in only 3-4 years. The PS3 has blu ray discs and fantastic graphics. The 360 could get better graphics yes, but again, we have not seen the PS3 when developers are used to it. Having being plaiyng old games recently i notice how much improvements are made graphically during a consoles life cycle. 2011-2012 will be when we will see the real difference in console sales figures. remember the PS2 sales were not the best when it was first released. I predict they will all be in a similar position, none will win by an excessive amount of sales. To think the Wii and PS3 will sell so much in such a short time, and to think the 360 will lag so far behind is unrealistic though.
My main point though that i would like to re-state is the PS2 sales. There are a lot more people out there without a next gen console, and the price gap is not that much.
FYI: I have Wii, PS3, Gamecube, PS2, and used to own Xbox. Yes, like all i will probably be unconsciously bias.
I have one other mate with a Wii, 5 with a PS3 (one of them owns a Wii) and none with a 360 (my mate sold it for the PS3, he only ever intended to get it part time, a stupid thing to do if you ask me). I find it amazing how friend groups console preferences change so drastically. Though being honest 2 of them were unsure whether to get the 360 or PS3 but with so many SONY mates they came to the sony side.
