Long-running strategy series Heroes of Might & Magic is going web-based and MMO in a brand new game.
Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms, as the game is named, is due to launch in spring '08 and sticks with the series traditional strategy roots but is described as a persistent version.
"Thousands of players", explains Ubisoft, "will be able to rule their virtual kingdoms, lead gigantic armies against each other, master the trades or create legendary heroes. The game requires no download or installation, only an Internet connection. In addition, players can play at their own pace; from 10 minutes to multiple-hour sessions."
If only I liked HOMM... Every year I grab a copy of it, as the idea sounds great. Every year I play it for a few days, then give up squealing with tedium.
HOMM has had its day, far as I'm concerned. Numbers 2 & 3 were the pinnicle of the franchise that has refused to move with the rest of the community into the 21st Century.
Agree with csdaveuk about its longevity as well; got the last effort and was mildly entertained for a couple days, but soon deserted HOMM for something a bit more exciting.
Though I'm sure there are a cadre of hardcore fans slavering at the mouth at this news. I'm a bit blasé, however.
HoMM 4 was a travesty. Luckily they fixed that in the latest sequel
The lure of the series was the hot seat games with your mates, SP campaigns would only entertain for a week or so before getting tedious as you guys say.
MMOG can build upon the hot seat lure and migh actually be great.
