PS3 2.10 upgrades Blu-Ray tomorrow

Plus DivX and online voice changers
Sony will release new a PS3 firmware update tomorrow that will enhance the PS3's Blu-Ray movie playback, and add that anticipated AVI support we've all wanted.

Firmware version 2.10 will add 'Profile 1.1' Blu-Ray playback, which is the technical name for a new standard of Blu-Ray films that support new features such as picture-in-picture playback.

DivX support will also be added, along with VC-1 (wmv) video support, so you can finally watch all those perfectly legal videos on your PC through PS3.

Sony's also adding an option to change your voice online. Long-time xbox Live fans will remember Voice Masking on Xbox, which was removed when whiny kids doing constant impressions of Arnie with a robot voice got too much to bare.

Okay, so there's no in-game XMB. But one NeoGAF user points out, "DivX = porn. Porn = win."

True fact.

great update, I think its such a big bonus that we can have a blu-ray player that can keep up with the times via updates, do stand alone players do that? I have no idea

can't say I use divx much, but by the looks of what people have said on other sites this is a great update too

Porn will always win through in the end. Oh yes.
ginsin on 17 Dec '07
All hail porn!
ileatyoualive on 17 Dec '07
Ok the blue-ray update is welcome but i've been playin avi's on the 360 since the last dashboard update. Bit late to catch the porn enthuasiasts Sony. Hows about you waste your time now trying to get an ingame xmb. Or at least let us access music whilst playin pro evo

What if some people who don't have Xbox 360? Duh!!

It is a great update for PS3 owners.

The Blu-Ray update is welcome but the other features are all playing catch up to 360.
Xbox 1 proved that voice masking is a BAD idea, which is why it was removed for 360's Live. Sony will soon find this out...
I've been playing what little XVID/AVI's I have on my 360 since the last dashboard update so it means nothing to me.
What I want to see is x264 codec support and in game XMB.

no it isn't. divx support has been touted for about 6 months and thats us just getting it. how long till they give in and give us a ingame xmb, another 6 months?

It would be nice to find a game that is compatible with a bluetooth headset let alone be able to change the voice..

wat the hell is a voice changer

It lets you alter the sound of your voice. You can sound like a little girl, a robot or a large black man. LIVE had it on the old Xbox and it SUCKED! Very annoying in the end and it has since been dropped. So it's nothing to look forward to that's for sure. (SONY JAB) It just shows how many years behind MS Sony is on the online front...Sorry.
horngreen on 17 Dec '07
apparently, according to Kotaku....the PS3s DivX update tomorrow will only be limited to uncopywrited material that is under 2gig

Sony announced it last month, Microsoft touted it 6 months before they added it. There is also a difference, the PS3 is DivX certified which means developers can use it to run heavely compressed movies inside their games.

gods whats wrong with you people? every single person everysingle time.. i want my in-game xmb or ill whine and bitch.. jesus. itll be out when its ready. they been hearing you ask for it for a year. theyve been working on it for lord knows how long.. what? you want them to put it out and it not be working properly or worse crash the game and then you whine and bitch some more?

I wish i could see an update of firmware and not have to see you people complain. heck id bet money the in-game xmb will come and people will still bitch about it. grow up! learn patience! if it means so much to you go use ur 360.
r1s1x on 17 Dec '07
i cant see a use for ingame xmb. on xbox i only use it to return to the main menu, or shutdown the console.

i would like to see mp3s playing in the background, but i'm not worried, most games (non-sandbox) i like to hear the OST for. it's only stuff like crackdown/gta that would benefit (oh, and possibly driving games).
lmaolmao on 17 Dec '07
i cant see a use for ingame xmb. on xbox i only use it to return to the main menu, or shutdown the console.

I'd like to be able to do what I can on 360 or even more, such as;
- Message friends while playing a game
- Private chat to one or multiple friends while playing a game
- See the status of any of my downloads while playing a game
- See which of my friends are online and what they are playing
- The ability to listen to my own music while playing a game (a must for driving games)

Even though PSN is free, these are still features that you would expect from a next-gen online network. At the moment MS are the one's leading the way and Sony are just playing catch up.
vulcanraven01 on 17 Dec '07
one thing i missed when i got the 360 was the voice masking- i was like where is it and then after googling it had been removed ......sniff sniff

Hating Sony and the PS3 is the law of the internet, your not really allowed access to the internet if you like them LaughingLaughing

Microsoft is all that is good in gaming, a pure gamers company that will bend over backwards to offer the best quality hardware, games, online service and all at low low prices.

Sony are pure evil and out to spoil gamers fun with their poor quality systems, games, online service and all they want to do is rip you off whenever they can get away with it.

Hmmm, yes ripping us off by giving us free PSN Confused
It might not be as good as XBL but atleast i don't have to pay for my online play.

What does everybody have against voice changers? They sound like a great idea. What exactly happened when MS gave the option of voice changers?

I have been using ORB on my pc for ages so I can stream anything to my 360 from avi to divx Rolling Eyes

But surely BY THE POWER OF BLU-RAY movies shouldnt need to be compressed? Wink

I was been sarcastic, there seems to be a general theme on internet forums that microsoft with the 360 can do nothing wrong, while everything Sony do is a bad thing.

DivX, picture in picture...yeah, whatever. Can we have some more decent games, please?

if
ratchet and klank
heavenly sword
uncharted
folklore
rock band
guitar hero 3
unreal tournament 3
Assassins creed
even call of duty 4 is not decent enough for you..

you may as well just burn ur ps3.... well thats if u own one.. do u?

i own 10 "decent" ps3 games. im quite glad they are spaced out honestly spending 100-120 or 180 bucks a month in games is not exactly easy on the budget.. but ho hum.

sony AND its PARTNERS could... oh wait a minute.. wait a minute.. its sony's fault its partners are not releasing "Decent" games as well? well sh...e there is definitely no hope aint? but back to the original point.. sony AND its PARTNERS could release 10 "decent" games a month and you people will still complain.

tell you what.. take yourself off the internet.

oh wait... or are u saying ur waiting for specifically "sony" to release a decent game.. no... that cant be it... either..

i give up.. yes.. my original solution stands.. take yourself off the internet.
