Take-Two "disappointed" with BBFC

Publisher responds to BBFC's intervention of VAC's Manhunt 2 appeal decision
Rockstar parent Take-Two has said it's "disappointed" with the BBFC's application for a judicial review of the Video Appeals Committee's decision on Manhunt 2.

The decision could have seen the game get a 18 rating in the UK.

The BBFC said yesterday: "The BBFC is applying for a judicial review of the decision by the Video Appeals Committee to overturn the Board's rejection of the video game Manhunt 2. The Board's challenge also seeks suspension of the Committee's decision that the game should be classified.

"The BBFC is contesting the VAC judgement because in the Board's view, it is based on an approach to harm which is an incorrect interpretation of the Video Recordings Act."

If the VAC's decision is suspended, then manhunt 2 will not be classified before the outcome of the Judicial Review

Take-Two Interactive's chairman Strauss Zelnick responded to the move today, saying in a statement: "We are disappointed that the BBFC has decided to appeal its own Video Appeals Committee's judgement in favour of an 18-plus certificate for Manhunt 2."

"We believe the VAC decision was correct and do not understand the BBFC's decision to expend further public resources to censor a game that contains content well within the bounds established by the BBFC's 18-plus ratings certification."

The saga continues...

Or it could be that a game is coming out at on a console aimed at kids which requires you to mimic the actions of murdering someone on screen.

as long as it region free we can just import it... so who cares?!

I'll try not to get yet another rant on about this one, so here goes...

Let adults decide what they want to play. Give it an 18+ certificate and let it go already.

Which is why the BBFC and a ratings system was established, hence, not an excuse.

I wish the BBFC would do their jobs properly rather than just looking for the sacraficial lamb of the videogame industry. Mad

Since when were any of the consoles aimed at kids? The Wii is aimed at the general market and the PSP and PlayStation 3 are aimed at the more 'hardcore' market as far as I was aware bud.

This no longer has anything to do with the content of the game it's just a personnal vendetta. Evil or Very Mad

The average age of a Wii gamer is 29.
It's coming to the PS2 as well so are you saying that's aimed at kids as well because they banned it on the ps2 as well.

Surely the rating should stop children using the software as much as it prevents them from watching various explicit videos.

Maybe the interpretation that we should all make is that the censors do not trust adults who clearly care so much about their childrens fragile little minds to take the time to look at the box or ask in store...or god forbid have a look at what their children are playing. Maybe retailers should be more vocal about ratings when selling a game.

It is an old issue but society should not be run by the Daily (vote conservative!...we love the royal family...remember Diana for the rest of your life....we are a little xenophobic but we have our reasons) Mail...

This looks very much like the BBFC trying to cover there bottom to me and here's why. After the review passies the game for it's 18 rating some one at the daily mail will write an artical with words like "BAN SICK VIDEO GAME" and then both daily mail readers will be quietly outrged until they turn to the next page and something else outrage's them both. The game gets relesed many ppl buy it because of all the contraversie and not because the games any good.

After some time has past some one will kill some one else the killer will own the game and the game will get blamed for it.

The daily mail prints a "BAN THIS SICK GAME" again both readers get outraged for a little longer this time and even more ppl buy the game because of it and the BBFC will say "hey we did all we could to stop it don't blame us".
analandy on 18 Dec '07
Actually for once I agree with the BBFC there is simply too much violence in today's media and they do raise a good point if they did unban it youths will still get hold of it and besides if it did get released it would probably be too late to become a hit anyway.
