2008's Essential PS3 Games

Feature: Games to rock your PS3 to
It's been a tough 2007 for Sony and PS3, with the majority of the year seeing the console take the place of the underdog, in a three-way race dominated by Wii.

That said, in November PS3 finally outsold Wii in Japan, and following a number of attempts with the SKU Sony finally appears to have hit the right note with the 40GB model. Since its launch, sales have shown a significant increase.

There's now rumblings that 2008 is the year PS3 will start to throw its weight around. Home will launch, and major titles including MGS4, Killzone 2 and Gran Turismo 5 will - hopefully - offer 200-percent proof that the console is a force to be reckoned with.

As our own PS3s tremble in excited anticipation, we've looked ahead into the next 12 months and picked out the game's you'll want to hound like a love-sick puppy...

Killzone 2
The failure of the original Killzone FPS to live up to the hype hasn't dampened anticipation - which is rampant - for the sequel and it's one of Sony's major first-party releases in 2008. It's abundantly clear that everyone wants this game to be awesome.

Cinematic flair has gone through the roof in the sequel, and the new first-person cover system is an exciting addition. Plus the real shooting meat is enjoyable as well. A combination of animation and physics make the Helgast satisfying to shoot; properly rendered blood splatters out realistically while Guerilla's excellent motion capture work creates some great looking death routines, complete with flailing arms and dives to the floor.

Metal Gear Solid 4
Baffling, potentially brilliant, plot aside, Metal Gear Solid 4 is easily one of PS3's best-looking, most-anticipated, exclusive games - and thanks to the intuitive, yet deep, controls there's never been a better time to sample Snake's charms. It's coming bundled with Metal Gear Online too, and what a package that's going to make!

Grand Theft Auto IV
Yes, GTA IV isn't exclusive to PS3, but let's face facts - it's going to be absolutely massive. That's reason 'a' for its inclusion in the list. Reason 'b' is this: Microsoft was making a big song and dance about Xbox 360 being the only console in 2007 that'd have GTA IV and Halo 3. But of course, GTA IV got delayed to 2008.

Turning that on its head, you can know declare that PS3 is the only console in 2008 that'll get GTA IV and Metal Gear Solid 4 (or/and Killzone 2, or/and Gran Turismo 5, yadda, yadda).

Resident Evil 5
Capcom's Resident Evil 4 was one of the best videogames ever made - fact - and as a result anticipation for number five is HUGE. We've been drip-fed information to date, but we do that that series stalwart Chris Redfield is returning as the lead character and that the zombies aren't just zombies any more - they're of human form, with intelligence.

It's looking like the majority of Resident Evil 5 will be played from the same third-person, over the shoulder, as 4, and producer Jun Takeuchi has spoken of the game being influenced by Ridley Scott's visceral war epic Black Hawk Down. We can't wait.

Unreal Tournament III
How many different types of multiplayer slaughter could any man - or woman - ask for? Epic's Unreal Tournament has plenty and, on top of all the carnage, the game looks the mutt's nuts thanks to Unreal Engine 3 lying at its beating heart. It'll have your jaws hitting the floor and hanging around in the carpet pile.

The game's already released over the pond in North America and here in Europe we have to wait till 2008 - but when you leap into the multiplayer fragfest and the UTIII vehicles, oh my.

Haze
It seems we've been waiting for ever for Haze, but it should finally be with us in early 2008. It's a first-person shooter developed by Free Radical - of TimeSplitters fame - which is why the game's surrounded by fuss and interest. Oh, and the fact that it's got four-player co-op.

Haze is set in a near-future where the government has outsourced military operations to private multinational corporations. You play Shane Carpenter, a soldier who works for the Mantel Corporation who has access to high-tech vehicles, kick-ass weapons and performance enhancing bio-medical support.

Gran Turismo 5/Prologue
2008 is the year that will see PlayStation's flagship racing sim's PROPER debut on PS3, and oh boy is Gran Turismo 5 looking absolutely stunning. Anyone who still needs a reason to justify the notes they splashed out on that big shiny box, this will most certainly be it.

Playing GT5 feels like putting on your best suit and going for a no-expense-spared meal at The Ritz. Everything about it is lush. It's elite. It's the most upper class of racing game ever. And we're not just talking about the stunning graphics or super-satisfying handling of the cars.

Fallout 3
So what Fallout 3 is multiplatform? A new project from the developer of the brilliant Oblivion deserves its place here regardless. A sequel in a PC RPG series, Fallout 3 presents players with a free-roaming, post-apocalyptic world littered with mutants and mangled structures.

While an RPG, it's pretty heavy on the action and features a combat system that allows you to target specific body parts of an enemy. It's got some of the bloodiest headshots we've ever seen, and any game with a portable mini-nuke launcher in it just has to be great.

Littlebigplanet
In Littlebigplanet you start off as a small teddy bear-like creature made from wool, and you use your little avatar to construct in-game objects using materials such as wood and cloth. With a bit more time however you can construct entire levels that can then be ran through in a side-scrolling platformer style.

Each avatar seems to be fully customizable, and created levels can be published online via a YouTube-like system where users can play, comment and vote on submitted user creations. Be excited - it looks great.

Final Fantasy XIII
You know that Square Enix's Final Fantasy RPG series is big bananas and FFXIII on PS3 should be extra special. It's "A tale of souls from a futuristic civilization illuminated by the Light of the Crystal", according to SquEnix.

It also promises us that the Final Fantasy XIII "takes full advantage of the PlayStation 3 system's advanced hardware, providing tangible, intuitive controls while delivering seamless transitions between real-time gameplay and stunning in-game cinematics."

And finally...
The idea of this list is to focus on big games coming out for PS3 in 2008, but we thought it'd be doing the console an injustice not to mention the launch of Home next year. It's an ambitious - and massive - online social network and then some and is a major part of Sony's battle plan for its new machine. On top of that, Sony is expected to launch a video-on-demand service for PS3 in 2008, with it reportedly debuting in Japan at the start of the year.

Not a bad list you have to admit, even though some are multi-platform it could be a very good year for PS3.

That list has given me a lazy lob. Looks like 2008 is going to be a very expensive year.

yet ANOTHER gran turismo. Rolling Eyes why bother.

ah well least the ps3 owners wont feel left out,
how many ps3's have blown up now? or have sony hidden there god awful faliure rate, despite barely selling in the 1st place.

thank god i wont be spending a penny on sony. sony is very very good at advertising there hardware but not their games.

and unfortunatly people are brainwashed by this and defend it like its the best console ever made.
LIP on 27 Dec '07
Some excellent games there but the ones I'm looking forward to most are RE5 and GTA4 not really excited about the others but they are certainly system sellers tho
the monk 21 on 27 Dec '07
resident evil 5 was delayed until 2009, it was announced months ago, you had an article on it, it was something of a big deal...remember Question
android-sheep on 27 Dec '07
OK it's a not bad list but all of the best titles on the list are multiplatform, aside from MGS which although will undoubtedly sell hasn't been too well recieved in the previews so far. the only thing there is home or little big planet, if anyone who's waiting for haze hasn't seen the footage on gamer tv, you should check it out, it looks terrible, as in ps2 graphics.so really all this list is saying is if you want MGS buy a PS3, if you've got a 360 already then you'll have most of these games anyway!
HA1LT0THEK1NG on 27 Dec '07
Im not sure if its because i have been spoiled with the 360 line up recently but most of this list doesnt do it for me.

The GTAs will always sell but in my opinion will always be repetative and dull along with GT.

MSG i will of course run out and grab a copy on day one but even though i thought number three was a welcome return to form part two really dented my love for the series.

I think La Noir and White Knight story(though proberly nowhere near next year) will be my most waited for ps3 games.
bloodbathrich on 27 Dec '07
To the idiot that Said Metal Gear is the only game worth getting and didn't sell well is an idiot.
Metal Gear 3 sold over 4 million units thats hell of a lot of units just in Japan and US only. The other games you forgot to mention is Final Fantasy, killzone 2, can't forget God Of War 3 which was recently confirmed for Christmas 08 and also the system seller Gran Turismo, can't forget that game.
anyway the point being PS3 has some excellent 1st party backing, and some AAA 3rd party backing. Can't say that much for Xbox360, considering the only 360 1st party studio is Rare. Oh yea Banjoo Kazoo here he comes exclusive to Xbox 360 in 2008 im sure xbots can't wait.

Haze is not delayed to August 2008 numbsculls, it should be out before March 08, looks like January.

"I can confirm Haze will NOT release during 2007 and has been delayed until Q1 2008 (calendar year)"

Gran Turismo 5 won't be 'essential' at all if they don't actually do something with the p**s-poor AI and physics modeling they use. And the whole cop-out with vehicle damage is just tripe--own up and tell people you're too cheap to pony up for the damage modeling, Sony!

Other than that, everything on that list will be on the 360 at one point or another (yeah, expect SquEnix to make Final Fantasy a timed exclusive at best...especially if they postpone to 2009, like they probably will...) except for LittleBigPlanet (looks great--only game worth looking at on the PS3 next year), and Killzone 2 (taking the Gran Turismo route--pretty to look at, but poo under the hood...), so why are they essential again?

As for this list of games, nothing new that we didn't already know, save your opinions until you actually get a hands on. Saves on the baby wipes.

FFXIII, LBP and Killzone 2 are the standout exclusives for me, though i am keeping an eye on MGS4. and Resident Evil 5 is the biggest non-exclusive (will still probably get it on the PS3, as i like its controller better for 3rd person games). i'm pretty sure the PS3 (as well as the 360) will both have much better exclusive line-ups than what CVG has been showing for 08.
atrimus on 27 Dec '07
Whoever posted from the Haze forums, is dead wrong. Ubisofts fiscal year is April to March. Ubisofts delay was Q4 2007, which puts it at January to March 31st 2008. Please stop spreading incorrect launch dates.

As for the rest, here's my list of anticipated games for 2008:

GTA4, GT5, DMC4, Wipeout HD, Street Fighter 4, Heavy Rain, Dynasty Warriors 6, Ace Combat 6, Killzone 2, Burnout Paradise, Final Fantasy XIII, Castlevania, RE5, Full Auto 2: Battlelines, Crytek's Console Project, Eyedentify, GoW3, LBP, Home, Tekken 6, Populuous, Force Unleashed, Prototype, and Infamous.

Hehe, at least, that's what i'm looking forward to so far Wink

Morne

Oh, and LIP, they bothered to release another Gran Turismo because the little known franchise has happened to sell 13.5 million copies per edition (GT1-4 has sold a total of 54 million copies). So yeah, I guess maybe they think it'll move some units LoL. Idiot.

Hear Hear! as for "or have sony hidden there god awful faliure rate, despite barely selling in the 1st place" I think your refering to the wrong console there. Do us a favour, go put some cream on you sore red ring of death!
rico798321 on 27 Dec '07
Eh hello CVG you forgot a little game called Burnout Paradise at the end of next month. January is still 2008
themadjock on 27 Dec '07
MGS4 and LBP for me. I've got one eye on Killzone 2 but after the original I don't have high hopes.
The multi-format games I'll pick up on 360.
Also to point out, FF13 isn't out until late 2008 in Japan meaning most likely a spring 2009 release for the US and a summer/autumn 2009 release for Europe so forget about that game for now...

And I agree with a previous poster, I expect the line-up's for all 3 consoles to look alot better when E3 comes along. MS especially have kept their cards close to their chest to put the focus on their 2007 line-up so im extremely interested in what they have to offer.
I also expect some big announcements from Sony such as God of War 3, which will be huge.

Rightttt.... Gran Turismo won't be essential my a$$.. I guess your saying that because Forza 2 wasn't essential to the 360. If one thing you don't know about Gran Turismo is its huge fan base.

Gran Turismo 1...........: 8.15 million
Gran turismo 2...........: 9.37 million
Gran turismo 3...........: 15 million
Gran turismo 4(Prologue).: 1.36 million
Gran turismo 4...........: 9 million

The p**s-poor physics modeling they use? Thats why the Race Car show "Top Gear" uses Gran Turismo 4 for their car simulations. Idiot.

Keep praying Final Fantasy will come to 360, because you ain't gettin it! Haha! Don't worry you can play the multiplatform title Revenant Wings which was made using the Unreal Engine. Don't worry about FF XIII coming to the Xbox 360 because its developed ground up on PS3's White Engine.

Killzone 2 will be great, with a awesome cover system.
Don't forget Rockstar's PS3 exclusive project also coming out in 2008 according to their 150 game confirmed list.
imaballa on 28 Dec '07
GT5 and GTA4 look interesting. Can't say the same about the rest, I can judge them when I give them a play.
vectra on 28 Dec '07
been looking for an excuse to buy a ps3 - not got one yet.

The games that interest me there are multiplatform.

may still buy one in anticipation of that killer title that will no doubt drop at some point.... but for a non MGS / GT lover then that list is a tad grim as far as exclusives go.
leeb1977 on 28 Dec '07
Nothing much there to tempt me into getting a PS3. I'll stick with my Wii and i'm going to get an Xbox 360 soon.

I'd love to have a PS3, maybe next year, Littlebigplanet looks amazing.

just because something sells well doesnt make it essential, if anything it shows how well marketed products sell rather than good ones.

i have owned GT games and now have forza 2, i think forza is the best of the lot and now i do not want GT because it looks like more of the same.

i have no doubt it will sell well but it has no real competition on the PS3
pishers on 4 Jan '08
C&VG, you seemed to have missed out Tekken 6! Which is one of the very few near 100% guaranteed exclusive PS3 games. The Tekken franchise is massive, too. So it's not like it won't go un-noticed once it's released. Especially after the success of Tekken 5 - which is still probably my favourite ever 3D fighting game.

If you mentioned Tekken 6 and I've missed it, then I apologise Razz

Meh, i have a 360 and ps3 and that list is p**s poor compared to my 360 gaming last year. Resident evil 5 and GTA 4 are the best there and are both multiformat. GT as a series is boring compared to burnout and PGR, i will only buy it for the topgear stuff, killzone 2 is simply a graphic whores wet dream, there has been no proper gameplay shown so i therefore have no interest in it. Home looks like a poor myspace and LBP looks interesting but rather short lived. MGS4 simply hasnt impressed me at all, the whole hype around it is based on the belief that kojima can deliver a game that he has been promising for the entire series and has produced maybe once, splinter cell s**ts all over it in my opinion.

What kind of idiot would buy a piece of sh*t with a 33% failure rate?

an Xbot of course! "I am an Xbot programed by Bill Gates to buy faulty consumer electronics disguised as a computer!"

I dont usually bother with retards such as yourself but i have to ask, why did you buy a ps3?, from my experience of the console its certainly not for the games. You can hardly question someone buying a decent games console that has decent games now when youve clearly snapped up a ps3 despite it being an overpriced tamagotchi with no interesting games to boot.
DAEDALUS79 on 4 Jan '08
Not entirely related to this post, but perhaps slightly interesting to some?

I went to Game last Thursday to pick up a PS3 (I have £220 worth of vouchers and credit, so may as well). The games I was interested in are Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Drakes, and possibly even Lair.

I asked the staff in Game if I could swap out any of the awful games that they include in their bundles. the answer I got back was basically "you can't change the games, but you can trade them in. You'd be better off buying a 360 though. It is cheaper and it is a much better console".

He went on to admit that he'd buy a PS3 when FFXIII comes out.

Let me just get the fact i own a 360 out the way.

There are some nice titles on that list, but the interesting titles are multi format.

In someways i agree with the Previous comments. MGS looks amazing and iam sure i will want to play it.

the PS3 exclusive list just gives me a odd feeling of reworked PS2 games with better graphics. Thats not to say that the 360 isnt doing the same, it is. But to a lesser degree.

Games like splinter cell conviction , fable , force unleashed ,mass effect are pushing the boundaries alittle more. and make for a more orignal list of games.

You're talking out your bottom. GT is the king of racers that has far more depth and substance than those arcadey counterparts you mention. As for Killzone 2 you say you've not seen a gameplay trailer so have no interest in it. Well that's clever, you have an interest in Resident Evil 5 and GTA4 though with no more a gameplay trailer than Killzone 2. If anything Home looks like a s**t hot Myspace and may serve to build a PS3 community. Finally MGS 4 will be the b******s there's no doubt about that, Splinter Cell simple can't match it as an epic experience.

One more thing why did you buy a PS3?

Finally MGS 4 will be the b******s there's no doubt about that, Splinter Cell simple can't match it as an epic experience.

The b******s? or just b******s like the last MGS (an unplayable, boring mess) epic or otherwise. Also I think people would be right to anticipate GTA4 and RE5 over Killzone 2 because both of those games are from proven, quality franchises where as the frst Killzone was average at best.

I have a PS3 but this blind devotion to its games is so boring. I am not going to think Killzone 2 will be a great game till I play it or read reviews I respect.

Any non-biased gamer will know that even games with promise can turn out disappointing (Heavenly Sword, Lair). It is true of the 360 too though.

You're talking out your bottom. GT is the king of racers that has far more depth and substance than those arcadey counterparts you mention

This is obviously coming from someone who has never played Forza 2. GT1 and GT2 where my favorite car games until i decided to purchase Forza 2. It is superior to all other car games. Especially After playing the GT demo from PSN. The only thing i would say
GT5 will have over Forza 2 is graphics. I would like to be proved wrong on this because i will buy it, but the chances are it wont live up to its hype.

Sorry for looking at this games line up with a bit of optimism. So should I assume that all these games will turn out disappointing. Do you know what I find boring? The blind cynicism over what is clearly a great line up of games.

No I don't know what you find boring, but if you liked MGS3 then I think you probably don't find many things boring and have the patience of a saint. There is nothing wrong with being optimistic but assuming games will be fantastic before they are even out is just as bad as assuming they won't be. It's like the poeple who give games 5 star reviews on Amazon before they are even out.

The fact the article says the games are "essential" is the problem, the same was said about "Halo-beater" Killzone 1.

I am sure that there will be great games among that list but people have just as much right to say they aren't interested in MGS or Gran Turismo.

In regards to some previous posters, yes, the MGS series is epic.
MGS1 was easily the best and one of the best games over the last few generations of consoles. Sadly the sequels have failed to meet those heights though with the poor MGS2 and MGS3 which felt lie they had run out of idea's...
Still, I've enjoyed each of those games simply because Kojima know's how to tell a story in a Hollywood style. Add that with some great humour such as hiding in cardboard boxes, leaving porno mags out to distract guards and you have an enjoyable experience, even if the gameplay hasn't evolved alot.
I've bought a PS3 simply for future potential such as MGS4, FF13 and God of War 3. So yes, at the moment 360 s**ts all over PS3 but I feel it won't be until fall 2008 and beyond where PS3 really makes a challenge.

Out of those i'll pick up MGS4 purely for the hype, Kilzone 2 because it looks great and i actually enjoyed the first one. Haze is also on my list.
Gran Turismo has disappointed me since the first game, i don't think the rest have been as good so did not buy the fourth. however, if i play the demo or i lend it off a mate (very likely) i will no doubt pick it up.

UTIII and Fallout 3 i will definitely be getting. As will i get LittleBigPlanet and i can not wait for Home.

As for Final Fantasy XIII i will not get it, i am not a turn based RPG fan though i can imagine this being an absolutely huge seller, software and hardware wise for the PS3.
Then thre is GTAIV which looks vile to me, too realistic, why the f*ck would i want to take a cab everywhere etc. I do not like total realism, i like games to have a bit of fun, and when i am bored cause a bit of chaos or explore.

Resident Evil 5 i might get, it is a great series i love if not a little over rated (and scary) but i'll pick it up no doubt.

Other great titles for me are Tekken 6, God of War 3 (only ever played the series, never got for some reason).

Then for Wii-Super Smash Bros Brawl, Zack and Wiki, NiGHTS....

And many more, mainly for the PS3 though. ''Tis a good year for gaming. And also a time i think we will see the PS3 really gain some steam and catch up with the 360.

One more thing why did you buy a PS3?

GT is a chore, and this is from someone who loved the first two. I couldn't be bothered with GT 4 after a few days, I thought to myself "What's the point?"

And as for MGS, the series has been good, but the cutscenes in the last two just come across, to me as someone who is deep down, a frustrated film director who ended up in games. I want to play, not watch! MGS had its crown taken by Splinter Cell some time ago.

As a serious stealth game, yes, but I still enjoy the MGS series alot more than the Splinter Cell series simply because Ubisoft have milked SC dry while MGS has been calm and steady with it's releases.
