We play a lot of online Call of Duty 4 - in fact, most team members play for a few hours a night. But while we're good, usually finishing in the top four of Free-For-All matches, and winning the odd game, there's always someone who's better - the 50+ ranking veteran who's a step ahead. That's why we've asked that person - or rather, lots of them - to give you the ultimate guide to CoD4 Team VVV are one of the UK's, if not the world's (see 'Clan Team VVV') leading games clans.
"The chaotic scenes of Call Of Duty 4 online can be daunting at first," claims clan member Alan Boiston. "New players often run headlong into battle, only to die every few seconds. Besides creating a growing frustration, this will also demolish your stats - and potentially damage any possible respect from the hardcore online community."
So how do you become John Rambo and do the business? "The key is staying calm and focused, with a good idea of your surroundings," reveals Alan. Whether you play alone or in online squads, this guide will cover the initial strategies you need to make it happen.
Why play online? "Going online can be initially daunting," reassures Alan. "Some may find it nerve-racking, feeling every move they make is being analysed. Yes, there is more competition online, and if you think you're great you'll always find someone better, but it's better to relax and enjoy the experience. Take your time - and the game's key skills will slot into place."
Team up with friends and rule the world... "Creating a team of complete strangers can be tough," confesses Alan, "But if you are able to find some like-minded people - or if your friends decide they enjoy regular games of Call Of Duty 4 - then there's no better way to enjoy yourself online.
Team gaming isn't just for experts - taking the time to learn some basic tactics can improve the performance of any given player immensely. Team gaming is for anyone and should be looked at as a social activity, not just something for the elite pro gamers to enjoy."
Ten essential CoD4 tips
1. Focus on your favourite game type Choose the mode that suits you best. Domination is often a good, fun way to get used to the maps and to learn where opponents are likely to come from. Become aware of your surroundings and it'll make you a better player - one less likely to be surprised by where enemy attacks are coming from and ready to take the appropriate course of action.
2. Learn the spawns Spawns can alter in every mode, and constantly evolve depending on where your team-mates are positioned. Learn roughly where your team-mates should stand to control spawning, and a controlling grip on the level can be assured. Victory awaits.
3. Name map areas So you see an enemy getting past your lines. He runs past a bush - but which bush? Always give simple, quick-to-pronounce names to different parts of maps. This way your team-mates will know the exact location of the opponent and can make adjustments.
4. Judge your perks If you're playing with perks, you need to know the ones that support your playing style, be it aggressive or defensive. Consider your role within the team and what you'll be doing to ensure victory. Try everything out at least once, if only to gain a full understanding of which playing style you're most confident with.
5. Grenade tricks Often referred to online as 'trick nades', these are grenades skilfully thrown within a few metres of enemy spawns at the beginning of games. Also take into account any vehicles - these can create chain explosions, which are very powerful. Practice in this area and a vital early advantage can be secured.
6. Random movement In battle, headshots count, though some perks make this less important. Movement is key, and erratic movement in a gunfight can throw your opponent off. Jumping or bobbing away from where your enemy expects can be vital to winning one-on-one gunfights.
7. Combine fire Often it's short, controlled bursts of fire that win a gunfight, though the urge is often there to play chicken with your opponent. Avoid this by communicating effectively with your team-mates and combining fire. This also aids in combining perks, so if you don't have Deep Impact, use theirs.
8. Patience Always key. It's not about racking up the kills, but securing the objective. This makes the difference in every game type. Stay calm, don't get flustered and always focus on the job at hand.
9. Communication One of the most important aspects, and one that's essential to teamwork. Naming map areas and giving constant feedback is key. This does not come naturally to everyone, but working with your team-mates will always yield the best results. Just keep talking and you'll be just fine. Really.
10. Learn from experience Despite all of this, losses are inevitable - the key is to learn why you were defeated. If tactics were used against you, rip them off. Learn from experience - don't be afraid to try new things, and practice, practice, practice.
Which weapons should you use? Starting out is out tough, but by focusing on a favoured weapon, you can quickly gain the attachments - e.g. red dot sight - to make it a killer. Not only that, but weapon selection can be key, depending on the map and your role with the team. e.g. Uzis are useful on the tight corridors of Vacant.
Assault rifles are easily the most flexible weapons. As you progress you'll unlock add-ons , none more important than the Red Dot sight. A zoom with superb detail and excellent peripheral vision, it's effective in almost any situation. The long-range Acog scope's range is offset by its slow speed.
The top five perks
Extreme Conditioning Enables players to run for longer while helping to gain initial ground at the beginning of matches. This is often used by snipers who wish to move swiftly round the outside of maps and, while being quick to attack, can get out of trouble sharpish.
Bandolier There's nothing like running out of bullets to make life tough, and it can happen often. This usually means attempting to find another weapon on the floor and more often than not this can result in an untimely death. Additional rounds of ammo are critical, making this perk vital.
Stopping Power Increases the power of your bullets, thus enabling players to kill opponents more quickly with body shots. Works well with all weapons and can be vital for those one on one close encounters. Remember, once you've opened fire, you're visible, so time is of the essence.
Deep Impact A simple perk by nature, but if used effectively can work well on opponents who are camping in difficult spots. So if the opponent is in a corner you simply can't get to, walk to the adjacent room and shoot them through the wall. You're hitting them when the cursor changes shape.
Martyrdom Drops a grenade when you die - this perk is seen by many as king. Killing lots of enemies can see a flurry of grenades all over the place, which are difficult to avoid. The perk is best used in Headquarters mode, where a grenade kill can give the vital seconds required to win.
So you've read the guide but still cant get any kills cause you just suck to darned hard? Dont worry there's something for you aswell.
The N00bs guide to cod4
I never seem to have enough time to escape the grenade with martyrdom, and its worse in hardcore where there isnt any icons! So by using this you'll most likely get a few kills each time you die.
Then there's last stand, when you die you enter into godmode for the split second it takes to pull out your gun. Your aim is right where you left it, usually on your opponents head, so all you need to do is pull the trigger. In hardcore full auto firing might not even be enough to save your life cause if they are fast enough they can put one in your head before the bullet hit This one doesnt work as good as the other alternatives but from time to time you'll get the chance for some payback on whoever killed you, maybe even a few of his friends. (This skill isnt as bad as the other two in noobstandards since most players headshot you anyways)
Then there's the noobtube, in rare cases also known as the rifle mounted grenade launcher (prepare to get trashed over and over when you use this)With it comes two shots which each give you a few kills. Its fairly easy to operate, point it in the direction of the enemy or just straight into the sky and pull the trigger. Do this twice and you'll have anything from 2-10 kills. Then just eat your own gun and you'll have another two grenades!
The RPG is hardly even used by noobs since its highly unaccurate. You cant even hit the ground your standing on with it so don't even bother
Sure you'll get some kills but by using these people will kill you even more Ive even noticed several servers that kick you for using either of these You should know though that by using them your labled a noob and everyone will call you bad words
Just had to write alittle about these weapons and perks that just about everyone love to hate
Martyrdom is the most damn annoying thing in the game, it is a cheap kill which requires no skill, and something i refuse to use ever. Everyone who uses this should die a violent death....online of course..
Then comes RPG users who are equally annoying, i use this in one of my custom sets to destroy enemy helicopters but that is all. This is closely followed by the grenade launcher users who don't aim long range but short range, basically aiming like a bullet.
Last Stand is also a cheap way to prolong life, and also stops people from getting tea bagged. People should bloody well use a better perk that requires some form of skill.
For me, being very attacking i prefer the Bomb Seeker ability or 2 Trip Activated Mines, Overkill (so i can have my Dragonuv with overkill and be Ghillied up) or Juggernaught (after experimentation i prefer this to the increased bullet power one) and then the steady aim which is great go people who pop round corners.
the most important perk for me is dead silence. i run around and kill campers all night long. listen for gunfire and run towards them and listen to people footsteps.
Personally i found the silencer to be the greatest add on for a weapon.
My profile has a M4 Carbine, silenced. With Stopping Power and Deep Impact as perks.
Silencers lower the amount of damage your gun does, but on the plus side, you never appear on the enemy radar while shooting. They can use a UAV on you, but that is the only way you will be on radar.
Im not sure if theres exact percentages, but by having the silencer that lowers damage, and then stopping power to increase it, i think it evens out to make an effective killing machine.
Before i was getting around 10 kills and death per match in Team Deathmatch. Now in the same more i get around 25 kills, and only 5 deaths or so.
the online mode is famous but not the consoles..then i mean that cod4 is made by the ps3..the 360 cannot handle the right quality, interuppted squares are showing on the screen . (while playing on the 360 version)...
I have to say that i have never had any problems with the 360 version, though i will be getting the ps3 version at some point due to wanting to play online with my mates on the sony side of the river so i will see which i think is the better version.
Have been playing since day one and oh god i love online at christmas, so many newbies running head long into shapnel after they have unwrapped the game.
We were all newbies once, what seperates the good from the bad are the ones that learn from everytime they get their heads blown off.
Incedently...I still dont think any online game has matched AvP 2 on the pc Death match with life cycle on was pure bliss for me.
its not perks or guns that win the game, its awareness of your surroundings.
learning the maps is key, i suggest domination or headquarters to familiarise yourself with them. Learn the different routes, not just the roads, every map has more "obscure" routes (rooftops, sewers, through buildings)
use your ears, not just your eyes.
listen for footsteps, the direction, the type of surface, the speed.
prime grenades (cook-off) a well timed grenade leaves the enemy no time to react,
stun grenades are great for attacking on built up urban maps, and smoke grenades are great on more open maps.
I have to say I'm with almanac2015 on this one - Martyrdom is the single most annoying perk there is. Not because enemies kill me with it (unless I'm in Hardcore mode getting away from them isn't a problem) but team-mates. If you're moving together and one of your friends gets taken out, you have to quickly find move AND keep out of the enemy fire. Doubtless another team-mate won't notice and will die too, meaning another 'nade drops. Pain in the bottom.
Useful Perks really depend on your play style. Odds are if you have a team that can work together, you will win.

I don't like this whole "cheap kills" mindset, if it is in the game and people kill with it then good for them. Blame the people who made the game not the "noobs" for using it. It annoys me in Battlefield when people say sending a jeep packed with c4 into a player and detonating it is considered a cheap kill. Everyone can do it if they want to. If players use glitches then fair enough but if it is a legitimate part of the game then the other players should deal with it if they are so skilled.
I have not played this game yet but by the sounds of things it seems the more you play the better kit you get, which makes me wonder how the "noobs" have any chance, or are there ranked servers?
There is no right or wrong way to play CoD, thats the beauty of it. Just play how you feel is right, on your prefered game mode. The only perk opinion I have is juggernaut, and the people who use them, often called Juggernoobs. So frustrating lol.
I'm a noob, been playing online for less than a week (free for all mode) and I am still learning the maps so from time to time I still run around like a headless chicken and get killed a lot (mostly by campers) although I did win my first game last night woo hoo. Personally the perks I like to use are deep impact and the increased damage one.... still unlocking others!!! I do carry RPGs but they are for taking down helicopters and not for shooting at players on foot. I dont like to camp, cant see the point, you may as well switch off the console and go and hide behind the furniture.
The only downside to online play so far is the people who take it so seriously, its a game for goodness sake, if you want to be so anal about things then join the army. Apart from that its a great way to spend a few hours (especially free for all).
Overall its great fun apart from the cowards who camp spawn points and the martyrdom perk which often gets me. So take it easy on the verbal abuse of the noobs, we have to learn, we have to complete challenges to unlock things and we are in it for fun.
Well. Eventually, if you are wanting to complete all challenges and unlock all the camouflages, you will have to use all the guns anyway. If you do not like the gun you are using, this will also affect your stats, but on the other hand, there are others who will just use one gun throughout their whole gaming experience, e.g: p90, G36C, etc... which, in most cases, will increase your stats quicker than using other guns.
i find that the silenced m4 is great accurate and good rate of fire. i havent been playing all to long and am looking for a good team to join. i am online most nights playing COD4 add me if you wish, PSN ID: Bagdr
hey guys has any body heard anything about the COD contract with playstation not being renewed? i received a weird msg last night saying that MW2 will be the last one on PS and it will become a XBOX exclusive game??????????? thoughts?
