7-year-old killed with Mortal Kombat moves

Drunk teens batter girl with MK imitations, face 48 years in jail
Two teenagers have been arrested after killing a seven-year-old girl by immitating moves from the Mortal Kombat games say prosecutors.

We've all shouted "GET OVER HERE" and pretended to uppercut a mate in the face in our yoof, but Heather Trujillo, 16, and Lamar Roberts, 17, went way further under the influence when they "hit, kicked and body-slammed" Trujillo's half sister, Zoe Garcia, until she lost consciousness.

The two teens were supposed to be babysitting little Garcia, on December 6, when they seized the opportunity to drink alcohol and immitate Mortal Kombat moves on the child.

Trujillo, according to released documents, admitted she'd "punched her in the stomach, karate chopped her lower arms, punched and pinched the victim's thighs, kicked her in the shins, slapped her stomach and buttocks and poked at the victim's chest."

Witnesses say Roberts performed a back kick on Garcia, from which she did not get up. He then cracked an egg in her mouth, apparently to check if she was faking unconsciousness.

When Garcia regained consciousness Trujillo sent her to bed, according to the documents, but she stopped breathing 15 minutes later.

They reportedly tried to revive Garcia, but she later died in hospital. The autopsy showed she had suffered a broken wrist, bleeding in the neck, swelling of the brain and more than 20 bruises.

Roberts claimed he was downstairs playing videogames while Trujillo wrestled with Garcia upstairs. A witness said later, however, that Roberts told her he'd kicked Garcia.

The two teens of Jamestown, Colorado, who said they didn't stop the attack because they were drunk, are being held on trial for child abuse causing death, and face up to 48 years imprisonment.

What a pair of bastards. I should be looking at this objectively but given what they've done, I'm not even going to bother trying. Bastards.

Now the circus starts all over again. Christ, there's not even been a decent MK game in YEARS, why is it being referenced? Any chance these teenage American boys ever watched WWE? Or played with action figures? Or watched boxing matches?

I'm lost......how exactly were they imitating MK ? It doesn't mention that in the article.

Ah well, just another example of what happens when stupid kids get hold of alcohol.

But hey, let's focus on the real issue here; computer games Rolling Eyes
MisterBedo on 20 Dec '07
Mortal Kombat? Why has this game been singled out? It's not as if they ripped her head off or used a giant four armed creature to stamp her into the ground.

It sickens me that people are capable of this sort of thing.

Stupid s**ts Evil or Very Mad .

Mortal Kombat is also s**t.

How does "punched, kicked & body-slammed" have any thing directly to do with Mortal Kombat? They could've been playing a wrestling game or not even playing a game at all. I used to play wrestling when i was younger after watching it on tv. not playing videogames. This should not be on a videogame news website. The mainstream media will eventually get hold of it and make things ten times worse.

I hate f***ing Yanks. They take things to the extreme. Having said that, all the w****rs from over there who play Gears of War on Live are enough proof that Yanks shouldn't play videogames if this is gonna be the case. I can kinda see why they blame videogames..

Sick bastards deserve everything they get!!

Although I do believe this has nothing to do with Mortal Kombat. Just another case of trying to find a reason why somebody would do such a thing. The simple truth is that it is a sad fact of human nature. You simply need to look throughout history and you will find crimes far worse, but no less poignant.
potnoodle1 on 20 Dec '07
Here here, potnoodle.

It's just sad that MK gets singled out straight away. Or perhaps its good publicity for them.

Sickos. Only happens in America doesn't it....
shlobadov on 20 Dec '07
The sad fact is that it's much easier to single out the handful of cases that may or may not be influenced by videogames than it is to tackle the hundreds involving guns. In the end, though, neither are going to get banned.

The children who did this should never have been left alone in the house, let alone with a 7-year-old. Degenerate pigs that they are.
Balladeer on 20 Dec '07
Thoughts are with the family.

Sad
ginsin on 20 Dec '07
I don't really care about their motivations and I don't really care about what happens to them now. The only thing that matters now is that poor wee girl and the horror that the family is going through.

There's nothing any of us can do except to wait for the attacks on our hobby due to the rabble rousers out there. Those kids were 4 years under the legal drinking age, so let's see how much pressure the alcohol industry comes under.
csdaveuk on 20 Dec '07
That article states:

In the case of teens Heather Maria Trujillo, 16, and Lamar Roberts, 17, they may have acted out the violence, hitting and kicking Heather's 7-year-old sister, Zoe Garcia, last week in a game they called Mortal Kombat.

The operative word is may. To me, this suggests that have picked a violent video game out of thin air and just associated this situation with it. Ludicrous.

spottyelephant on 20 Dec '07
That is horrible.

Shouldnt really blame Mortal Kombat though, or any other video game... it just says they named their fighting 'game' Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat is a well known fighting-game franchise after all.

Its the old 'video games make kids violent' debate again.

The fact that they were both underage, under the influence of alcohol and apparently left in charge of a 7 year old... anyone think thats more to blame than a video game?

Taking things to extreme? Have a look back in your own nation's history books and look up a guy named Oliver Cromwell. Tortured, enslaved and viciously murdered hundreds of thousands of Irish and English people solely because of their religion...and yet there is a statue praising him in your country. Kinda like having a statue of Hitler in Berlin.

Whether it is TV, video games or some other form of influence on young minds, is irregardless to the fact that a young life has been taken. Our thoughts and prayers should be with the family of the lost child. The individuals directly involved with her death should be held accountable and incarcerated to the maximum length of time possible. They have ruined their lives just as much as they ruined the lives of the family of the deceased. Many of the comments I have read show no emotions whatsoever toward such a tragedy, this is what frightens me more then 2 teenagers actually committing the crime. Many people associate the term "evil" in a religous form. Evil is not religion, but it does persist and exist in this world and it has a strong foothold within it. Not showing emotion for the death of a child shows just how strong that foothold is. Perhaps with video games and violent TV movies and such other media, no emotion is necessary therefore, one tends to forget that an actual living breathing person with flesh, bone and blood is no longer with us. Someone whose life had just begun and is no longer given the opportunity to grow, join in highschool functions, dance at her first prom, enjoy the experience of a first date or kiss, graduate, become part of society, marry, have children, grow old and enjoy the companionship of grandchildren, childrens weddings, Christmas family gatherings, to love, and to cherish what this life has to offer. One life is much more important and does a great deal more than any video game or tv show could do in 500 lifetimes.

Once again using videogames as a scapegoat.

They're both underage to drink, and they're actually both underage to play most mortal kombat games as a fair few are 18s.
Yes I know that age ratings on games generally mean very little to gamers (although I had a mother bring in a DS game the other day cause her son was 8 and it was a 12+) but its so easy to turn this around cause even if they had been imitating MK (which they hadn't) they shouldn't have been drinking in the first place. Its well documented that alcohol impairs thought processes making people get angrier much easier.
I hope they get a decent sentance cause its actually just horrible that they did that.
RLRL_ on 20 Dec '07

ARE THEY TO BLAME OR THOSE WHO HAVE TAKEN THIS COMMANDMENT OUT OF OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND WHO ARBITRARILY APPLY IT DEPENDING ON THE SITUATION SUCH AS IN ABORTIONS?

THEY are to blame. THEY drank the alcohol. THEY killed a child.

I'd say that was pretty clear, wouldn't you ?

Don't try and bring religion (or lack there of) into this. Religion has been responsible for more deaths throughout history than practically anything else, so don't kid yourself that these things would be any different if we were all brainwashed in school.

No offence to anyone who's in any way religious. I just hate it when people preach 'holier than thou' crap, particularly on a topic like this.

Deaths possibly causes by videogames in history of mankind: <50

Deaths caused by alcohol: Stupid numbers.

Deaths caused by religion: uncountable.

Deaths caused by pointless, avoidable wars: F**k me.

Did you read in the papers last week that a man was murdered by a Christian because he believed in Evolution? Which story will get more coverage, do you think?

I'd say that as soon as we've taught people to drink responsibly, cured cancer and aids, wiped religion from the face the earth, stopped the Yanks from trying to carpetbomb all the resource-rich 3rd world countries, and improved on road-safety, then we'll think about having an intelligent open debate on violence in books, films, and as an afterthought, videogames.

Oh, hang on, it's another media-induced feeding frenzy, stirred purely to sell a few more issues to a technophobic but loud-mouthed minority.

Well, when you miserable old c**ts kick the bucket, this argument will die with you, just as it's done with every other new media in the last two centuries.

Incest and all? Where do you backward little snooker cues get your information? I do believe it was the British who wrote the books on inbreeding, all you ridiculous, uptight racists. Have you ever heard a member of the royal family speak? Strictly speaking, the population in most European countries all but makes inbreeding a necessity. So f*ck off.

Anyhow, unfortunately, stupidity and horrific behavior are not linked directly with nationality, rather to all humanity and it is sad and pathetic that you all should take this as an opportunity to comment (unintelligently, I might add, f*in Brits, right?)on "Yanks." Certainly abhorrent, shocking events as tragic as these are common in any country where people are allowed to think and act as freely boorish and terrible as they please.

And, as an end note, it is surely not about the game, a pencil could be a deadly weapon in the hands of the right idiot.

If games did have such a strong effect as people like Jack Thompson say they do, then wouldn't this sort of thing be happening every day? Confused

This story made me feel sick and I sincerely hope that the appropriate judgment is brought upon these two Idiots!!

Stupidity Is not linked to countries, let face it, all nations have more than their fair share, so all grow up. Have any of you actually been to the USA or Britain to make a judgment?

I feel sorry for the parents of all involved. I also think the link to videogames is thinly linked. “As they were playing games at the time, that was to blame”, kind of logic. Video games are easy targets of blame these days and Idiots like these are not helping matters.

Games should have a common sense rating, not an age rating, and gamers should prove that they are capable of distinguishing between real life and fantasy before being sold a game!!

I did like the freedom of speech comment though, providing its not considered as slander or libel, right Very Happy ?

We are all human! And better yet pretty much all of us here are gamers. Stop acting like little children.

But i dont like that whole reglion stuff either. Its pretty much caused all the wars on the planet. Thou Shall Not Kill? Maybe christians should actually read it themselfs. There the ones who point the finger and tell who to attack cause that sort of ppl dont believe in a "god"

Honestly, i can't see them getting 48 years a piece, if anything they'll serve half. I'm thinking the excuse of alcohol will be used to counter argue the prosecution and they will give the usuall "under the influence" explanation.

Technically, this is true, but it is not stated how much alcohol the teens consumed, surely there are levels to someone being drunk as apposed to light headed? Then again, we all have our thresholds.

Also it is not stated if they intentionally wanted to batter the girl to death and make her feel pain, how many of you have ever had a play fight with your mates or a mess around when your tipsy? My guess would be they didn't mean to kill the wee lass, but eveidently they did and for the action deserved to be punished for it. Manslaughter in the 2nd degree, at most, ten years.

the sad fact is there will always be cruel little scum bags like this who will kill and torture those that are weaker than them, its not video games, movies, comic books, music or whatever the Daily Mail and the like are saying the root cause of evil is, its the dark, twisted side of human nature that most of us thankfully never act upon

From reading the news report I'd guess the older half-sister had some deep seated jealousy/anger towards the little girl that must have stemmed from her own family breaking up. The alcohol intake brought out the anger. As for the other guy Roberts, I don't know he's just a sociopath I guess. It truly is a sick tragedy that will probably be used to portray video games in the wrong light to the general public, which is disgraceful.

P.S. I just got back from America a month ago (I was in Tennessee and New York) and the vast majority of the people I met over there were really friendly, decent people - give them a break you racists!

This is an extremely sad event, which I'm sure no one would be glad to hear about, and my condolences to the family.

Besides that I would like to point out something else I've noticed. Many people say that such things happen only in America, but let me tell you guys this, it America isn't the only place. I'm not American, nor is there any reason for me to be biased. In developing countries, there are many cases like, hungry mothers eating their babies, and are much worse than those of America. The US is more developed, and more people know what's going on down there, and don't give a damn about what's happening to people of underdeveloped countries. It's not about where the person hails from, this could happen in any country, and there are good people in America too.

Yep there are parallels between the negative stereotyping of Americans (violent slack-jawed, inbred yokels) with the negative stereotyping of computer games (MAN KILLED BY GOLF CLUB ATTACK AFTER YOUTH PLAYS TIGER WOODS '08 ) in the media. The media tabloids concentrate way too much on random acts perpetrated by a minority of people and portray it in a subtle enough way to make it seem as if its a representation of the majority.

correct me if you will but
i dont think video games could rub off on these little f**kers
but i think poor parenting is involved why would you leave a mentally disfigured kid take care of a vulnerable kid

My thought primarily are with the family and how much this senseless act has cost them.

Blaming videogames and/or stating it's "stupid americans" is sh**e. every generation has a scapegoat, it used to be video nasties like Child's Play being blamed for the Jamie Bulger murder in the U.K.
Videogames are this generations scapegoat and nationality has nothing to do with it.
as I said my sympathies go to the family but I would also say that the parent(s) are at least partly to blame in that these Kids had been drinking, probably taken from an alcohol cabinet in the house which, given there was a 7 yr old living there, should have been locked!

as a final thought, I played tetris a lot in my teens but I've never felt compelled to rebuild or build a wall while drunk!

LOL Incest in America? I'm sure we have our share but you folks across the pond I thought all came from the same King and Queen! Anyway this is yet another case of losers breeding and our government letting it happen. If we would just pluck them off the government teat and let them all die like nature intended we would have a much better country. It's simple, if you can't afford children then the kids should just die like a starving litter of puppies and if you can't afford yourself then the same should happen. As soon as I heared "step...." I knew just what we were dealing with.

SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE IS STILL JEALOUS ABOUT THE F'ING YANKS WINNING THE WAR:

Complete bull****!! How does any of the stuff they've done got anything to do with MK?? The egg in the mouth the fatality here? F***ing stupid Yanks. Looking at the pics of those two, they look like they're f***ing degenerates as it is. "Acting as a referee" is really part of MK.

I hate f***ing Yanks. They take things to the extreme. Having said that, all the w****rs from over there who play Gears of War on Live are enough proof that Yanks shouldn't play videogames if this is gonna be the case. I can kinda see why they blame videogames..

i'm not going to start a slanging match with americans here, but really, come on.

you only came into WWII because of Japan and you didn't want to look stupid in front of Russia. you've started a lot more wars that you couldn't finish, Vietnam, Irag 1, Afghanistan, Irag 2.

The best war you won was the civil one.....

Why is it when irresponsible people do things that sick to each other, everybody waves the "That's computer games and movies for you" crap, so the next time somebody smashes into my car for not looking where they were going, should I sue them for copying Flatout etc???
Wake up people and realise there are sick individual people out there, who have no concept of reality, and always blame it on the fact they were under the influence or didn't know what they were doing.

I am not stating that it all happens in America before anyone starts, but one stuck in my mind, the one where that teenager went into the school in the USA and killed all the innocent students, because he wanted to prove to his mates, he could kill that many people for real, all because his mate and him had an argument about who had the most kill's online, pure sickening.

Poor little girl.

Instances like this just show why the death penalty really needs to be implemented/retained (depending on where you live) as a final line of deterant.
Fluxer on 21 Dec '07
I wonder if these kids would of killed the girl if they were smoking weed? Makes you wonder why drinking is legal and smoking pot isn't...but of cobottom that never gets brought up.

Video games don't kill people, stupid people kill people...and being under the inflence of alchohol doesnt help much either. Any normal person understands the difference between reality and video games..isnt that why people enjoy video games so much, they get to do stuff you wouldnt normally do in reality. I guess if you say a video game inflence you to commit violence..your trying to deny the fact that your insane.

Its the parents fault for not educating their kids, video games are for entertainment. Thats why we have the military...they are trained to kill people and are paid for it. The same people who blame video games for violence, support the wars in which hundreds of thousands of people die in short periods of time.
